- In mid August, I traveled deep into the heart of Algonquin Park to fish for Brook Trout. I spent 3 days alone in the wilderness of Algonquin, camping and fishing. My hard work paid off and I caught lots of Brook Trout on this backcountry adventure.

Great job Alec the specimens you caught were absolutely beautiful, sorry about the chipmunks they can be little nuggets. I carried one once that got into my backpack for about ten minutes we had stopped for a while while hiking in Yosemite he ate into my toilet roll so not a good outcome for him then he jumped out of my pack and ran off.
I don't blame you not disclosing your exact location in the park there are too many instances where information is shared to the detriment of the lake and fish.
Chipmunks can be a nuisance, I once locked one in a food barrel without knowing. The only way to keep fishing spots good is to keep them a secret. Algonquin is very popular and gets lots of fishing pressure. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful large brook trout Alec, love those colours. I was impressed with you doing the Bill Mason thing, sleeping under a tarp only, but I guess even in August there are still risks. Kept the rain out though so that was good! When you found your sleeping pad chewed I was thinking what you have said about chipmunks: "Mice on steroids". Keep adventuring and keep filming! Mice on steroids is right! I love sleeping just under a tarp, I feel more connected with my surroundings, but mosquitoes buzzing in my ears in the morning isn't the best wake up. I'm always looking forward to the next adventure and I plan to share many of them. Thanks for watching!

@Alec on Adventures handling eith respect? How about take a few and eat them. Small percentage of fish die after release.not sure how you guys convince your self its proper. Let's go lassooo a deer? Fact catch and release kills. You should fish like a man take what you need to eat and stop fishing. That's fishing humanely ..not torturing fish.

That lake isn't stocked but it's a healthy remote lake with not much fishing pressure. Fishing all day is definitely a relaxing day! 😆
Nice! I got the same net I bought for Algonquin/ canoe tripping. Has a good reach and packs pretty small! Nice trip and nice fish!
What net is it?
I like the packability and the rubber netting but it was a little bit small for some of the fish I caught. I was happy to have it even if it added a little weight portaging. Thanks for watching!

Great fishing for specks in August with mono line.I fish the same way ,trolling but with the rod on the yoke.

Great video. I have no issue catching splake like that but Brookies not in lakes. Any stream or river no question. But lakes are very difficult for me. It's nice to see you smashing them and being gentle releasing them. One day I'll figure it out. Keep up the great work
Splake do seem to be less picky compared to Brook Trout. Once you find some solid Brook Trout lakes with healthy populations your luck will change. Thanks for following my fishing adventures!

I got to keep those good lakes a secret. I prefer sleeping just under tarp but it was a little too early for that. I have no regrets though, still a great time. Thanks for watching!
Hey Alec, throw a Little Cleo in along with your tackle next time. You obviously don't need it but it does work well. My go to is the 2/5 oz and the 1/3oz Red and gold. Thumbs up. Great vid.

Hi Alec! Another great video! You continue to have exceptional success catching fish. I see that in some videos you use your spinning rod and reel (this video for example) and then other times you use a level wind with lead core line. Is there a science/reason for your choice or is it just what was sitting by the door on your way out? In my opinion what you do is exemplary, you make great videos that are a pleasure to watch, you always include a bit of learning examples for the rest of us wannabes and you always respond to all questions and comments. Hey Bruce, my leadcore rod allows me to fish much deeper which is needed for catching Lake Trout mid summer. I could have used it on this trip but the spinning rod provides a better fight. I can still get my lures deep enough for Brook Trout with the spinning rod using some weight on my line. I'm happy to share my adventures and some of knowledge I have learned in the field. Hey there! Me and a friend are trying to book a trip in algonquin for some trout fishing. 4 days 3 nights. Im desperate for a loop we can find decent fishing. We have done a few loops but have never had much luck.

Hi Alec I always enjoy your trips. I have been going to algonquin for aver 50 years and very seldom take a rod because I go by myself and just explore. Now that I’m in my 70’s I want to slow down and fish. We’re did you get your rod holder for a canoe and how do you get done so deep
It's always a great idea to slow down and fish. On solo trips I enjoy trolling while I travel. I got my Scotty rod holder at Sail but you can get them other places including Canadian Tire. It's two pieces the holder and a gunnel/coaming clamp that go together. To troll deep for lake trout in the summer I use a rod with leadcore weighted line but you can also use steel line or dipsy divers. Thanks for watching!

Hey, to stay on backcountry campsites in Algonquin Park you must make your reservation through Ontario Parks. Here is the link: reservations.ontarioparks.com/
Make sure you select the backcountry tab and then select Algonquin Park. You will then have to choose the access point/area you would like to visit and from there you choose the lakes you would like to stay on. I hope this helps.

Hey Justin, ya during the summer the trout can be pretty deep in the lakes. I usually use my lead core to get it down to proper depths. Alternatively, you can use steel line or a dipsy diver. While paddling and trolling from the canoe, the speed you go will also affect the depth of your line. If you are going slower the line will sink deeper, going faster will raise the line up. Have fun! When fishing for brook trout, what lure do you use and how deep do you fish (deepth) ?
Also, I’ve booked a camping trip in Algonquin Park (very early July). I’m using Achray Campground as a base camp but looking to do day trip fishing. Question is… any lake in that area of Algonquin, that you know of have brook trout (entering Sandgate / near Pembroke) ?

Spoons and spinners are good and the depth varies depending on the water temperature. In the spring they are close to the surface and in the summer they go deep. Marie lake and Length lake are stocked with Brook Trout but getting their is a long day trip. Rowan lake is another option, closer to Achray and stocked with Splake. Thanks for watching!

Hey Alec love the videos! My brother and I have been trying to catch brookies in Algonquin forever. We have not had a chance to get out in the spring when the fishing is best, but we are yet to have success in the fall. It looks like you are not fishing in the spring either, and are just using a spoon. I thought in the late summer the fish would be too deep to catch with a spoon.
How deep is the spoon getting? Are you just trolling along the lake?

Hey Jonathon, you can catch brook trout in the summer too but they are very deep. They do become more active in the spring and fall when the water is colder. Lake selection is very important and there are many lakes in Algonquin that I wouldn't even bother trying to fish. In late summer I'm normally trolling for brook trout, depth can vary. Try going to some lakes off main canoe routes, the more portaging the better. Good luck and if you keep searching for them, you will find them. @@AleconAdventures I appreciate the reply! I was just in Algonquin last week. Tried Mink, Club, Big Thunder and Maple with a jigging setup (Seems really taboo to share lakes names on social media. I did not catch anything so I am going to say this is an exception lol! Apologies if this is not cool). I have some of the rapalla jigging lures and I made sure to get them to the bottom and jig back up. No luck. But I am going to keep trying! I definitely am going to try in the fall and spring in different places to find the elusive brookies!
Two questions if you have time!
1. I am fairly new to this but what kind of lures/rods/line to you need to troll from a canoe? I am not sure I have the right setup to be able to get a lure down 50 feet.
2. Any idea what the deal is with the Algonquin ecosystems. Obviously there is lots of bass in the lakes around access points that prevents healthy brook trout populations. But the further in I get I just STOP catching anything. Is that a sign that the brookies are there but I am just not able to snag them?

@@jonathonking9643 Steel line, leadcore and dipsy divers will get you down 50ft but you don't need to go that deep in Algonquin. Many lakes have been over fished, the best thing you can do if you catch a native brook trout is release it. If you're looking to eat some check out the stocked lakes. Good luck!

I'm at a point where I enjoy the summer and winter seasons equally. I like camping all year round and appreciate calm days canoeing in the summer and snowy days in the winter, snowshoeing through the forest. I would probably prefer the cold over bugs. I like early/late season canoe trips for that reason. Thanks for checking out another 👍
Hi, I am impressed with you catching brook trout in the summer. What is your secret to finding out what specific lake to visit in algoquin? I have fished in algonquin for years and I have been skunked! To the point where I have given up on algonquin in the summer for trout. How can I determine which lakes are worth fishing? I am willing to portage deep into the park. Some pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Paddle deep into the backcountry and portages many kilometers into lakes that are physically challenging to get to. Stay away from the main routes and fish deep 15-20ft for those brookies in the summer. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

Good questions- I don't always keep fish because the less I take the better the fishing is in the future!
You keep them, why your fishing then releasing them ? Your just hurting the fishes you gave them traumatic experience not to bite next time, the reason why I don’t hit the like button.
I enjoy fishing and it's something I like to do while I'm backcountry camping. I do keep fish sometimes however I packed lots of food for this trip and didn't need any extra. Fish can be caught multiple times. On several occasions I've caught the same fish multiple times in the same outing. If I kept every fish I caught I would be hurting the trout populations in many Algonquin lakes.
