Kneeling not only gives you more control and stability, it saves your back. As with those backless office chairs, if your thighs are at 45 degree angle, your spine aligns and you don't need a back support. Also, you can get better torso rotation; try to turn your whole upper body and avoid "arm paddling". However, kneeling will fatigue your knees and ankles, so good padding is a must. It's a trade-off: back pain v. leg pain, but you can swap positions, and take breaks.

I live and paddle on the Willapa River and Bay and if you heeled around here you'd be gusted over in a moment. The techniques you are showing though, are so graceful and smooth it makes me green with envy. Great stuff.

I tend to mix positions. I sit most of the time, but kneel when I need speed or hit rocky stretches of water where I need better boat control.

I'm 68 and would need, at least, 4 inches of memory foam to make kneeling comfortable.

I DO know that kneeling is a more stable position, but though an avid paddler, unfortunately I have NEVER been comfortable kneeling. I guess I have tender knees. Although I LIKE refined, efficient paddling, I can't quite do it all. HOWEVER, paddling from a seated position works fine, in most cases. I "grew up" in a canoe, learned ALL the strokes purely from experience (before I ever knew their names), and just LOVE paddling.

Use closed cell foam pieces under your knees.

Kneeling or sitting can also depend on what kind of canoe you have. Some canoes are only really stable if you kneel in them, but personally I've got an 18 and a half foot kevlar three-seater that is perfectly fine with three people sitting in it and quite stable that way. Where the seats are placed in the canoe can really affect whether you can sit on them or should knee in the canoe.

Actually the stern of the canoe is the back, so if you're paddling solo you're facing the bow, not the other way around. The bow is actually the front of the canoe, just saying.

This is not correct. When paddling a tandem canoe solo, you sit on the bow seat and paddle the boat “backwards”. This puts the boat in better trim. It often still results in the “bow” sticking out of the water, so people load it down with gear or even containers of water to make the boat more manageable.

That's just goofy. I'm a pragmatist, I know a fair bit about canoeing and sailing, and if you flip the canoe front to back, the back is by default the stern. Some people call it the technical bow, but if it's at the back it's the stern. Otherwise, you're sitting at the front and looking in the opposite direction you're going and paddling backwards, that's a hilarious image. Try it, and take a video! You'll get million views and a lot of laughs.@@mplsmark222

For long days I find that they only want to paddle is to sit in a canoe seat, resting your back on the backrest. For short (2-3 hour) trips I'd probably be up to paddling from the knees.

Soloing from one end, as at 1:41, does not work if you are heading into the wind. Canoe will "weathervane" around the lowest point, which is you, and bow will keep turning. Solutions: lots of weight (water jugs?) in bow, OR paddle from center position.

What is missing is the design of the bottom, are there boats that demand kneeling? I’m thinking of flat, round, arched. I’m trying to find the right canoe for fishing, it’s the James River, 5 miles across and can get choppy, I’m a few miles from the Merrimack monitor battle. I want something that can happen some chop, not to go out in, but if caught it. I prefer a seat.

Look for a Good used " Old Town Tripper" - Best at no one thing but can do it all well & handle big water safely - I have many Canoes over the years but if I could have only one it would be the Tripper!
