    In this project I will show you how I combined an Arduino Nano, an LCD, a rotary encoder, three peristaltic pumps with motor drivers, a load cell and a couple pieces of wood to create a crude, but functional Cocktail Machine. Along the way I will demonstrate how peristaltic pumps work and in which way they can work with the other components in order to pump a precise amount of liquid.

    A suggested upgrade: after dispensing each ingredient, run the pump in reverse for a few seconds, to empty the portion remaining in the tube.

    • @victoriamarotosilva7093
      @victoriamarotosilva7093 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Another idea; to save some cost in favor of preparation speed might be using just one pump and distribute the ingredients through the tubes with valves.

    Cool project.
    Just a tip, pre drill your holes in the timber, you have a pillar drill. Perfect nails, no splits and you control where the nail goes. Same as electronics, provide a path of least resistance and the nail will follow
    Good Job on the electronics 🙏

    Thank you. Very interesting demo with professional work. Different constituents can be placed at top and gravity fed into the bottom container. The flow of different constituents can be changed automatically using solenoid valves placed in the discharge line of upper tanks.The load cell can weigh cumulatively and stop in the end.

    I saw a group of 4th year engineering students did a similar project to this for their capstone project. Cool!
    Theirs worked a bit differently in that I think all tubes could run at the same time, no weight sensor. They also added an auto cup dispenser and conveyor for coolness factor.

    This is an interesting project and I liked your design, thank you for these amazing videos.
    One idea to add variety to your drinks is to use solenoid valves to control from where the pumps are sucking, this way you wouldn't need as many pumps and the valves are definitely cheaper.
    Edit: Thinking again, maybe using the valves wouldn't be such a good idea for food safety.

  • @kylepreiksa8183
    @kylepreiksa8183 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant! For my senior capstone project in college I made a similar system, but it was gravity fed rather than peristaltic pumps. Ours had a fancy QR code based ordering system and inventory management though. I always wondered if we should have gone the peristaltic route, and it looks much cleaner and easier to manage/control

    Would it be worth reversing the pumps for a few seconds after it finishes to clean out the hoses? That might keep the plate clean and make cleanup easier later.
    It would also make switching to other drinks easier. It's not a screwdriver with cranberry juice!

    Hey GreatScott!
    I have a project idea for you: Modify a PSU to be constant current source.
    I think if you remove the feedback from the output and add a small resistor(current shunt?) to the low side, it could provide a feedback. This should be amplified to the appropriate level and voila CC PSU.
    I didn't think this through, but I think this could be done, with your knowledge.
    Would be useful to drive leds, even many in series, since the voltage could go above 12V.
    What do you think?
    Cheers

    instead of using a timer you could have used the strain gauge measure the weight?

    • @meclucas
      @meclucas 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He could, but I don't think it would work as well as it does with the timer. The problem here is that the load cell produces a low signal that is susceptible to noise, in order to read a stable signal you must use some form of filtering, which will decrease the response time of the load cell, so he wouldn't be able to measure the amount of liquid poured in real time.

    • @greatscottlab
      @greatscottlab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, that would have also worked. But the problem was that due to the vibrations the measurements were a bit off.

    it might be possible to measure the liquid on a other way. you might be able to measure the current of the water going through, because it is moveing electrodes it should produle a voltage !!
    can you do a vid on that ?

    • @Algorhythm027
      @Algorhythm027 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not sure what you're referring to, but you can't use the electrical current flowing through a liquid to measure the flow rate. To do that would require either a turbine in the pipe or something else that can be measured electronically which is not practical on this scale

    • @Rostol
      @Rostol 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Algorhythm no, you can do it. It is called magnetic flow meter. Or mag meter. It requires a conductive liquid. The problem here is that it requires a known conductivity on the liquids. Which would mean recalibration after each new liquid is used.

    how safe is it to move liquid from a pump like that, since you will drink it

    • @jeremyhall7259
      @jeremyhall7259 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Very as you see he replaced it with food safe silicone tube.

    • @MrDaniyalAh
      @MrDaniyalAh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Kartikey Agarwal He used food safe silicone tubes plus no mechanical parts come in direct contact with the liquids, the pumps simply press and push the liquid forward in the tubes

    • @greatscottlab
      @greatscottlab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Correct, like already stated very safe due to the food safe tube.

    • @agarceran
      @agarceran 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If the tube is food grade it should be completely safe, as the liquid doesn't get in contact with anything else.

    • @Rostol
      @Rostol 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Very. Peristaltic pumps are used in hospitals for this reason. No mechanical parts come into contact with what is being pumped.

  • @BeetleJuice1980
    @BeetleJuice1980 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    great idea!
    the scale measures mass not volume so liquids with different viscosities will give different volumes. you could have one pump and a distributor that changes the liquid being pumped (plus some valves and that way you could have maybe 10 liquids and only one pump , plus you could do a flush to the pipes after each liquid was pumped)

    Suggestion: When you drill into wood, Drill from the hidden side and also have another wood piece under the piece you are drilling. That way when material is pulled up the hidden side will have ugly sides(Because of wood pulled up) and the good side will have a nice hole because the wood piece it is against will prevent sides from separating on the sides. If you need both sides pretty, then sandwich the piece you are drilling between two other wood pieces and then drill.
