In this Halloween episode I will ditch the idea of an ultrasonic mist maker and instead focus on more common fog/smoke machines. I will show you how they use "fog juice" in order to create smoke and at the end I will come up with my own crude mini fog/smoke machine design that did actually work. Let's get started!

One very inportant note: glycerine based fog juice sould never be heated to a temperature higher than 200°C because at this temperature glycerine can break down into acrolein which is carcinogenic!
The Boiling temperature of fog juice still is around 100°C because it's mostly water.

I think you can use a thicker gauge coil, just like in vaping coils, make it a lot smaller, and more effective, with a direct airflow to the coil, and exhaust port could use a nice trumpet with a flare for increased airflow as well, or eliminate it all together.

We made fog machine when I was a schoolboy. It was very crude but was working like commercial models, made huge smoke. You had to heat a copper pipe with a submerge water boiler and you needed a persitaltic pump with a battery and a push button. Push button turned on a relay to heat the pipe and pumping started. 12V PC fan on the front and the party was set. We made the liquid as well as we were cheap. We got glycerine and we watered it up and added food aromas.

  • @szilard1996
    @szilard1996 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Practically it is a vape:
The vape uses nicrome wire (mostly, you can use Kanthal too) to heat the "vape juice" (wich is composed of Vegetal glycerin, Aroma and Propylene Glycol). In vapes they usually use cotton for the wick, because it's cheap and it is easy to replace (to slip through the coil).
You can use a vape as a fog machine too (they are not expensive and most of them include protection circuit for overheating/short circuit), or you can use the "brain" of a vape to operate the fog machine.

I made something like this a year or two ago. Mine was about 10x4x6 cm, remote controlled and powered by a lipo battery pumping out 50 watts or so. It was a lot of fun to see my friends freak out when I put it in their school bags and fog started to come out. I don't think it will generate the toxic fumes, the juice would need to get a lot hotter but can't since it leaves before it gets the chance but you probably came to the same conclusion. I did get some of the burn marks but only after powering it for quite long but it's definately not a perfect way to heat the juice.

I think, you could have used a glass-fiber wick, sumerged in 80% glycerine-solution. And if you put aroud a thick Kanthal wire, it should give off approx. 100W of heating power, inorder to produce a thick fog. You could still use ur Design, but it would produce an appropriate amount of fog for a pumpkin. I beleve, that this would work, because I tried out a similar design.
Good Video as always, keep it up! ^-^

This is one of the few GreatScott episodes where i would be able to give you advice :D
Grab some 0.5mm NiCr wire, take 2 strands and twist them with a drill to create an even thicker wire with more surface area and ditch the wick and get some pure cotton, make a big coil and fill it with the cotton so that some cotton sticks out at both ends, lay it flat into the "tank" so that both cotton ends can pull up juice.
Yeah essentially like a big RDA, now current, with such wire and say 10 turns around a m6 bolt, you would need around around 150-300 watts power, depending on if you want short bursts of dense fog, or a constant stream of normal fog.

The principles you've demonstrated line up exactly with how the entire vaping industry produces its electronics. The goal in the vaping industry is to hit a temperature between 350 and 420 degrees F to vaporize a mixture of Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerine, but the water mixed with Glycol (fog juice) also obviously produces a reasonably thick cloud of fog.
If you or anyone else does this again I'd recommend purchasing a very inexpensive commercial "RDA" from the vaping world, some Kanthal wire, and some cotton wick with pure Vegetable Glycerine as the "fog juice" element. Run it at 10 Watts of power with the Kanthal wire measuring at least 1.0ohm and you'll have yourself a fog machine that can run for hours.

Just made an evap smoke machine the other day with basically the same principle. Instead of “fog juice” I used mineral oil which I would not recommend because it stinks. You can also use baby oil though.

Try making some Vape type coils with tight loops touching the one b4. There r vids everywhere. But this is still awesome. I Love these videos

Mach weiter so

I suggest to use a vape liquid base (glycol or glycerin) and a more powerful heating element, then there will be a lot of smoke.

Glycerin for a thicher smoke, glycol for aroma/smell (if you add that too) and atibacterial effect.

Nice design! Use fiberglass, or rock wool wick, as they can withstand very high temperature (because they aren't organic but silicon based) so that you can crank the power and therefore the output' you could also line the inside with aluminium foil as it will reflect the heat.

You can build this circuit with comparators and 555 timer ics instead of arduino
Comparator act as the signal for the low level of the fluid and 555 timer ics are used to generate PWM signal for fan and wire

First of all well done :) Second, I might be wrong, but I would put the nichrome coil in a copper tube (not touching obviously, the copper tube is just to resist the high heat from the coil). Then I would add the Ultrasonic Mist Maker to one end of the tube. This will make the Fog Juice as mist, giving it a better chance of contact with the coil and as a result, making more smoke. Now, this might not work at all, its just an idea :) Thank you

The fog is not thick enough. Its really neat though and could be improved on and made more awesome. Great idea.

Nice video.. one question though.. why didn't you use a copper tube ?? Air conditioning or refrigerator coil??

  • @NoviSavvy

I think that you should make some sort of a high power heated thick walled chamber with temperature control where you need to spray that fog juice.

What would happen in you put your new heating element in front of your ultrasonic generator? Would the filament smoke the mist?

  • @kishoreysn7801

Try using ultrasonic mist generator to generate fine mist with the liquid and pass the mist through coils of wire, that would definitely generate more smoke.

cool! another option would be to use a commercial vape heater chamber and build a fan and controller to drip liquid on it :)
