Interesting how he wrote Askeladd in just for Thorfinn’s development, because Askeladd himself is so layered that you’d imagine he had him in mind from the very start.
That's because Yukimura's that good at writing basically every component of a story

Askeladd: *Becomes season 1’s MC*
It's showing for a writer to be able to create characters whose depth they're not truly able to capture in the limited existence of words, good characters are something bigger than what they say or do on the pages, they are, first and foremost, an idea in the writer's head, therefore their depth is determined by the writer's understanding of the human condition, which Yukimura seems to have keen insight on.
Askeladd is the definition of a great character, a character that can act in such a contradicting manner yet feel rational is the most human character that can be created, and for something so human, the process of making him must have been too. This is why it's understandable that Askeladd's layers were not planned for, the truest things happen on a whim and come from the soul. This must have been what made Askeladd the GOAT he is.

it actually makes a lot of sense to me, because as a child, Thorfinn starts with a very simplistic view of the world. Askeladd had to be complex if he was going to teach Thorfinn anything... especially because Askeladd isn't the type that directly _tries_ to teach Thorfinn lessons in a fatherly way. Thorfinn's main role in everything is just to learn from Askeladd's life, by observing him as he becomes further and further entangled in the miserable way that his own violent history eventually does him in. it's interesting because Thors basically died for the same reason... his past caught up to him. but he had re-made himself in such a well respected way in his later life, that it was hard to see his history, or understand that he had things to atone for as well. and that's kind of the challenging thing about both men... Askeladd was better equipped to exemplify why you shouldn't live your life in a violent, destructive way, because he was worse. but eventually, even Askeladd couldn't help but care about something... his mother... Wales in general... and in the end, his destructive lifestyle culminates in his failure, because of the hypocrisy of that. and Thorfinn's whole job in season one is just to live in the shadow of that example, and see what is the logical and inevitable end of a story like that. from there, the road to recovery actually does fall more in his father's footsteps.

He is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most wholesome mangaka alive right now. Whether in interviews or online he is the kindest and most thoughtful person who interacts and cares about the fans. And above all else expresses how he is feeling, talking about reasons for breaks or how his life is with his three young boys

7:23 - 8:05 This is probably the most interesting and fascinating part of the interview for me, the fact that these characters that the author creates have "their own" thought and actions... Like the line: "I hadn't thought about him (Askeladd) like that right up until I was going to write that scene.", the fact that the authors own writing can change his feeling about his own character and learn from it is purely fascinating.
Many renown authors and writers have spoken about this phenomenon. At some point an author’s creation becomes something much bigger than him, and he becomes just the vessel that was penning down a revelation.
And honestly, once you start thinking this way, it’s very easy to separate the art from the artist. You won’t have to feel guilty for consuming and/or enjoying the works of, sometimes, horrible human beings. And you will be able to look at their works more objectively.
Reminds me about how Tolkien wrote Lord of The Rings. He treated it like uncovering a story that actually happened, therefore, he didn't have 100% of the information behind every action and situation.

As an aspiring writer myself (nothing published, I only recently set up a Wattpad account because people kept encouraging me to, but I haven't had time to sort through the things I've been working on and decide which are good enough to upload) I've also had this happen, most often with side characters that I never meant to be important beyond one specific scene. They just have a way of taking their role which was meant to be tiny, and run with it, often winding up with a much larger role - sometimes even a reoccuring one that I never meant them to have.
The other situation where I've had this is in regards to characters' mental health. It always starts with little, not very notable things that they're doing or thinking, usually in a scene where not much else is happening, or in a scene where they're nervous or stressed, then the same things starts leaking into other scenes as well until it starts to be a noticable issue for them. And now two of my characters have OCD, which I never intended to inflict on them. This is likely do to the fact that I have OCD, but I find it interesting that they didn't actually wind up with the same set of symptoms as me, though the anxious, spiraling thought pattern at the root of it is the same. That, and the fact that it doesn't happen very often, as its only happened twice now, and across all the stories I've worked on, there's been over a dozen other point-of-view characters that weren't affected...

This was very cool to see, you can tell he is very passionate about his writing! I'm anime only, but I ABSOLUTELY loved the story! I might have to read the manga after watching this.
He seems really intelligent, the way he talks about his work and the message he wants to get through to the fans is so thoughtful and deep, I think every artist on every industry could learn from this. Really makes you think about what it takes to get to that level of writing and artistry
Unfortunately manga like Vinland Saga generally don't do that well compared to the best-selling manga, with a couple major exceptions (though even those barely breach the top).

The underrated hidden gems with a lot more well written and compelling story have a lot less recognition by the people in the world. like steins gate, mob psycho, re zero, summer time rendering, odd taxi, apothecary diaries etc compared to the extremely popular anime on the top based on how they perform in their consumers statistic and how well they sale to the media. Like jujutsu kaisen, attack on titan, demon slayer, one piece, bleach etc. Now all of these are still good, but i'm just pointing out how people don't look deep into the anichart to find actually banger animes like garnt does every season.
@@akamesamaIt really depends on your taste. You can tell how well written each character is. He sets out the whole story for each character quite early. It proves his intelligence. Like Shakespeare, his writing can really play with your emotions like a cord. In my opinion, Vinland saga is slightly better than beserk. Vinland saga took a much different approach and instead chose the story of the transformation of current society. It really mixes fantasy and fiction like 99.2% pure meth. The author managed to make the purest chemistry between the two. The story of Vinland saga embodies the true emotion of the hardships of our ancestors in a entertaining way while showing the true development of a true warrior. I'd like to compare Cantune to the late King Baldwin. I really need to stop writing...
5:45-5:58 Damn, that hit really close to home. People have the capacity to change for the better, and I think Vinland Saga conveys that message really well (especially with Thorfinn). Yukimura definitely did a phenomenal job of instilling that hope in the readers. Themes like that in stories motivate tf out of me to be a better person so I appreciate it when authors nail them perfectly

What I really appreciated when reading the manga is Makoto Yukimura's research into the time period, culture and people he's portraying. Although Vinland Saga obviously takes many historical liberties in favour of an original story, seeing his memos and commentary shows the lengths the man goes to for his work. He even went to Iceland in order to get a stronger connection to the material he was working with.
I recently read Planetes, which I strongly recommend even if you're not a big fan of Vinland Saga, and Yukimura does a similar thing there, where you can see the passion behind the pen when there are pages of text at the end of each volume talking about terminology, quotes, prominent figures, technology and just his overall adoration for the subject of space.
Historian here: I fully agree. It is a decent work of fiction using history as the stage of performance. There are some things that are clearly done because of the medium (manga) and there's a lot of Japanese influence in it. But all in all, it's very well done.
You can see that he did his research. And you can also see that he is passionate about it from a young age on (in Volume 1 you can see the villagers of Vicky the Viking/Wickie und die starken Männer).

The thorfinn Slave arc is my favorite arc of the series just as it was for the farming arc in vagabond. Two characters that only know violence and killing to then do a complete 180 and learn the value of life through cultivating life through crops and realizing how that energy affects and uplifts everyone around them in a way that violence never will. Truly inspiring

I really admire and respect how even though Yukimura was afraid that Vinland Saga would be cancelled if he wrote the slave arc, he still chose to do so. It must have taken an insane amount of courage to make such a decision. As a creator, you gotta deal with trying to do what your audience wants vs what YOU want, and the risk paid off.
Slave arc is brilliant, it's everything after that I believe destroys the tone and world originally set by the author. Even the newest Natives arc is very cliché from a series that has been everything but.

@Absurd Turk It gets really goofy out of nowhere. I actually thought I was reading a spoof of vinland saga after that portion. Every action sequence from then on is played as a joke even when Thorfinn fights that kid inside of the fort. It just seems like for such a realistically grim manga it lost track of what made it good in the first place.
Every side character in the first 2 arcs had a multidimensional person with purpose. After Thorfinn and Ragnar (I forgot the redhead's name, I think it's Ragnar) get their merry men to travel to Greece everyone has just a singular focus. Thorfinn is the only person getting the time of day for growth while everyone else is stunted.
Then at the end of that "War" arc (I use quotations because that could barely be called a war) the girl just proposes to Thorfinn and he accepts. Where did that come from? Then the series just skips a huge portion of time when they finally get to Greece and the return trip. Why not flesh out this girl and Thorfinn's relationship in this portion?
I don't know, but for me it just seems like the comic has gone a wasted potential route.

Personally I feel very strongly that 20th century boys should not be in that same tier. it's good but the more experience and knowledge you have about real world socio-politics, the more childish that story can become I think ... the "Friend" is too unreal a villain.
I would however put Monster and Pluto up there, 2 other works by Naoki Urasawa. Johan was a lot more believable as a real world person than the Friend in 20CB.
He seems to be the kinda guy you would drink with discussing philosophy for hours on a late afternoon.

Damn, his personality really showed through in the authors notes section for Vinland's English release and I'm glad to see that's who he really is. The statement that stood out to me the most when reading it was when he talked about how huge of a creative risk the Slave Arc was and here he seemed even more shocked and happy that it played out the way he did. Idk it's nice to see those words aren't just words, they're truly how he is. The funny thing is when he mentioned somebody seeing Thorfinn's change and wanting to change themselves, that actually happened to me. It's because of Thorfinn I've been working on myself since fall of last year. I may be oversharing in this comment sure but I'd also like to post it to confirm that he got through to somebody! 😄
I'm so glad the story and character made such an great impact on your life, a lot of people never get up from that and spend most of their life blaming circumstances and other people for their mischief.
You're doing well for yourself and i share the same opinion on this as well, i think there's always something to learn from a series especially ones like Vinland Saga where you see the character grow throughout the story and become a better person realising that it's not the world but himself that would have to change. Great story and great mangaka indeed
@Karan Mavi Thorfinn and Guts both influenced me a lot last year when I was going through a really dark period, gave me a lot of perspective and kinda encouraged me to keep going and change. I'm glad I did because I'm happier with who I am now, but I still have plenty of room for growth and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

Vinland saga is honestly a story i needed to hear for so long. I harbored resentment towards my father, my mother, myself, hated my life and myself for a very… very.. long time. And only now am i finally realizing my worth, cutting ropes that tied me to unhealthy things, still dealing with a bunch of trauma that came from those ties. S2 SPOILER: Im pretty much going through my season 2 thorfinn phase. Im growing, learning to be more aware of my emotions and my reactions to them, how they affect others and everyones future. And regretting the time i wasted being so unhappy in my youth.

I absolutely love Vinland saga for the fact it covers a often untold viking story. The story of Change. As during the great viking age, the strife of the norse people was that of great change, over a historically short time, and the great riches and tragedy that comes with it.
I myself is directly descendant from a Viking lineage, a lineage covered in the Steigen Saga (Not to be confused with Steigen Sagaspill which is a dramatization of events after), about a people who refused to go under the rule of Harald Hårfagre (Fairhair), and thus paid the ultimate price. (being almost annihilated into subjegation).
It was also one of the last places that many Norse passed through before heading off to iceland, especially during the great emmigration period when people went to iceland to settle.
What I like about Vinland saga is the story about hardship, and where the moral compass stands, that in that time and era, sometimes doing the right thing leads to misery, and the wrong things are rewarded.
In the case of my ancestors, they wanted to be free, the local Chieftain aka Jarl, didn't want his people to be under fairhair rules as the terms wasnt fair for the people living the lands, and the jarl was a respected person who wasn't exactly wealthy himself. So after a Ting (Councelling with its people) they decided to say no to subjegation and fought for their freedom.
Which resulted into a big slaughter as they neither had the money, or weapons and armor to fight against a well funded army that steamrolled them.
So while morally it was the right thing to do, fight for what the people wished for, reality set a whole different manner and they would have maybe been better off if they had decided to bow down to the first king of Norway. But as anything, it's complicated, and we will never know for sure. And that what Vinland saga covers so great, things are more complicated than it first might seem.
Amazing. He also deserves praise for Planetes.

Yep. A lot of people missed the point of the farmland arc and dropped the series immediately. It's an arc where there is a lot of introspection. Not only for the character, but for the reader himself. Reading/watching season made me question what things i did that make who i am today and what can I do to improve myself going forward.

You can tell by the way he talks and explains his story that Makoto Yukimura really cares about what he writes and the thoughts put into it. It was so wholesome when he was talking about the positive feedback from fans knowing full well the risks of what's happen in Farmland Saga, even with the potential cancelation. What an amazing interview, he's awesome and I'm looking forward to the ending of Vinland Saga and his future works

Makoto Yukimura is such an awesome mangaka and amazing person, I will be forever grateful to him for creating one of my favorite characters in fiction, Lucius Artorius Castus.
Vinland Saga is by far the most complex, but also moving piece of manga/anime art I have ever seen that didn't have to do things over the top. It is a simple theme, yet the way it's executed is complicated, it deepens how much every character is fleshed out despite being made just for the development of the MC.
I like how the author basically summarized Thorfinn's basic premise; "Violence is bad. It is cool, but in the end, it's still bad. We need to change ourselves to do what is better."
I won't say Vinland saga is that complex .

This was such a great video. Listening to how much he truly loved his work, describing the father-son relationship, and finding out the series is finally coming to an end after 26 volumes is amazing. Listening to other artists and authors talk about their work just gets me more motivated to continue making my own. I love the art of story telling and really enjoy learning about how others make such amazing stories. Maybe one day I too can make something people will enjoy.

This was such a wholesome and deep interview I'm glad Garnt got to interview Yukimura. I put a big fat smile on my face when he said he loved the readers. Him talking about change and the future, those themes stucked to me. "If we never change, the bad things will never change too" he couldn't have been more on point, I felt like I've done nothing to change myself and coming to that realisation, I do hope I can strive for that change so I can give myself a better time in the future.
Really happy to see authors like him trying to show us the larger picture of life. I still have to continue the anime, but just from this interview alone I know I'll love it to bits

But seeing him in this video, I genuinely feel his wholesomeness and can see why he can churn out those stories. I refused to wstch this interview before the end of season 2 and I don't regret it. After S1 ended, I went straight to the manga and boy oh boy, what a ride this story is.

Yukimura-sensei saying he does not do a good job getting his message across is maybe a bit too humbling. All the themes & topics he talked about I feel and have felt while reading the manga. Besides being a great artist it is his storytelling that puts him that one step above most other comic artists, not only manga. He seems like such a wholesome person and I am glad that he can tell us Vinland Saga until the end, exactly the way wants because I believe he is gonna stick that landing unlike some other mangaka.
4:20 me trying to tell people why violence in Vinland Saga isn't the main focus of the story lol. This man has created such an amazing and rich story and I'm glad there are authors like himself who aren't afraid to tell stories like Vinland Saga.
I'm anime only on this one, and I can already easily tell anyone that this is one of the most important stories ever told. The reason for that is perfectly encapsulated in the phrase "war is stupid".

It's been an interesting experience to read a Japanese manga set in Northern European historic setting. It's quite novel, refreshing and hits home a bit different. 😄

i am just finding out now that he also wrote planetes. His art is amazing but his stories are just on an unreachable level like man you should read/watch planetes if you still havent.
I'm not gonna lie, my first reaction was, 'gigguk, why are you smiling like that?' and then I realized, if I was in the same room as him I would be full on freaking out so who am I to judge a geek smile here and there? All and all I loved the interview and would love to see what he has in store for us next, both of them.

It makes me so happy to know that Yukimura has had such a joy writing Vinland Saga, as we all have reading it.
He's way too humble, he's incredibly skilled at weaving themes with characters, and has an absolute mastery of evolving context. Vinland Saga allows you to go on the exact same journey that the characters do by showing you different characters at different points in relation to the idea of a True Warrior.
It's been an unforgettable read, and quite possibly my favourite manga experience I've ever read. Thank YOU!

Weird timing. I remember when you first recommended Vinland Saga and I've been trying to find the time/ability to watch it for ages. I finally caught up with the series (well according to Netflix) just a few days ago. Funny how things can come full circle. Can't wait to hear what he has to say 😄.

The title alone made me so jealous, but I'm so happy that you got to meet him, reading the Q&A panels at the end of VS volumes gave me so much respect and gratitude to Yukimura sensei. I love how despite being worried about fan's reception towards the change of pace in the farmland arc, he still forged ahead and continued the saga, developing characters to become even more interesting than they already were.
Also I love how when he and his editor went to go watch the voice recordings for season one, they were absolutely terrified of Thorfinn's voice actor lmao (and who can blame them after hearing Yuto Uemura's amazing voice acting, it sounds so genuine). Afterwards they got to meet with Uemura-san and he was a really nice guy. If you want to know which volume had that extra panel just ask and I'll check which one had it.
This was such a surprise, i remember watching season 1 of Vinland Saga back when it first aired and not thinking very highly of it. But as i re-watched the series again after growing up and having struggles in life myself, i finally came to understand all the themes and the message yukimura sensei was trying to convey.
The series is no less of a masterpiece in my opinion, i have even more of attachment to it than Berserk or other seinen series which just goes to show how good of a writer he is and being so humble on top of that is really crazy!
I'm catching up every week to season 2 and it's amazing how much of a turn story has took but if you re-watch season 1 you'd see that this was the path the series had always meant to take.
You're a goat for real, and I'll definitely read the manga once i finish season 2
One of my favorite parts of reading Vinland was his author's notes at the end of every volume. They were such a joy to read. Reflections about life, his research about the viking lifestyle, his own personal experiences. He's a man that truly cares. And he writes as he loves and he loves as he writes.
This gave me new respect for the series, thank you to the both of you

Such a beautiful interview with Makato Yukimura his works are so amazing for the industry I would never expect a manga be able able to tell and cover a story well especially with the historical fiction and make it feel so real. Vinland saga is such a great reminder and has good messages along with that it was fun with reading all the scenes in settings with made it interesting as a person with descent from where all of the settings take place.

As someone with two vinland saga tattoos, all volumes and a deep love and respect for the series and it’s source inspiration, this video was a joy to watch! The love and passion Yukimura has for his series and it’s message shows that there is only genuine encouragement for the readers to become better people - one of my favourite things about the series, really.
I'm so glad that you could make this interview. And as sensei Yukimura said the anime is an overwhelming way to get a lot of new readers. The first time i heard about Vinland Saga was in 2019 with the anime and after that I started reading the manga and It was amazing for me!
