Normally it’d be virtually impossible for me to look at a character order the robbing and massacre of an entire village and say “dang, that was the right call for them.” But lo and behold this cursed show did it, because the one survivor of the village did indeed go and tell the opposing forces, thus totally proving Askeladd right.

It really is cool how real it is, although some names are kind of... wierd? Like using "Askeladd" as a name? (comparable to Cinderella) Maby it's a clue to his story or character.
Just watched it literally today, and it was intense as hell. Hoping that they two will get together again after the ceremony but the death flags is everywhere. And my feeling was right, he's died 😭
It makes sense when you think about him like that. I initially thought of him as Eren (which was always obsessed with killing titans) but Viking Sasuke sounds better.
FYI the "Language barrier" stuff is only an issue in the native Japanese dubbing. In stuff like the German dub, they actually switch languages, like when trying to talk to the English the characters speak in a very, very crude and accented English
The English dub handles those scenes pretty well too. It's only the Japanese dub that fails to do so and it's insane how some people are so close minded, they can't give other dubs a chance.
I'm not going to lie, I was so tired of waiting for each episode that I just went and read the manga. Once I reached last chapter that was released I just sat there thinking that is how my brother must feel about Berserk. Now we just keep trying to convince the other to read the manga that we so enjoy.

Generally manga is always better than anime (with few exceptions like "Banner of stars"). I know when friend shown me "Ichi the killer" movie. He said you have to watch it, it is brutal. After I watched it I told him it was not so brutal and gave him manga. After he watched it he said "Yea, movie is toned down version of manga" :)
I read full vinland saga because my friend suggested it . I didn't quite get it . Then I asked my friend to explain it . He explained very briefly. That only a man who suffered injuries from war know how cruel war is . But for that Thorfinn had to learn it . By killing hundreds of people. In the end he learnt his lesson on dead bodies of people. His father told him a real warrior a real warrior doesn't need a sword but to know that he has to test it throughout manga . But at last he knew his father was right . This also tells us his father was also advised by someone . But he also struggled his whole life which means a true warrior is someone who has wielded sword once but knows that it can only bring destruction . And he also failed to teach Thorfinn until his death .

Wow ignorance is quite bliss. Makoto Yukimura holds a title which not many manga author has. Which is having both his long form serializations adapted by a prominent animation studio and have both be broadcasted on national broadcasting station, and this fucking channel is mandatorly charged if you have a flippin tv in Japan.
@ Seems like the OC has no idea of what the author already has under his belt. You rarely get a genuine talent like Yukimura, and he's still got his youth to pump out several more long form serialization. Seeing his track record, guessing it'll end up being adapted too.
Dude the art style is SO good. Whoever animated it LOVED what they were doing. I’ve never seen anything like it. All the close up shots, even in combat without missing a frame. The detail is amazing. I’m not an Anime purist I’ve seen a few and only ever watched a handful from beginning to end but rarely was I wowed by the visuals. I can recall 3 where I fell in love with just the visuals. Akira, Attack on Titan, and Tokyo Ghoul. But this is different. It’s not as colorful, it takes place in the dark ages after all so it relies on its edginess. It’s gritty and even grotesque. You can see details down to the people’s fingernails. They’re long and unkempt. Aside from the amazing art direction the setting is great as well as the overall story and writing. I would LOVE to see more medieval historical anime’s. It has the 3 kingdom kind of feel to it but in Europe. Anyways I would love more medieval anime. Whether it’s in Asia or Europe.

I binged all of it yesterday and my god, it was amazing. It was always on my radar but never could find where to watch it but when I did, I was so pleased. Personally I wasn't a fan of Thorfinn after a bit (he grew back to me at the end), but what I loved, was the side characters, the realism, the sadness and horrors of the raiding of villages. In most shows its like "oh haha they killed a village who cares". in this they just struck you in the heart that these are people with lives, love, family, and beliefs. Thats what is truly special about it to me.
It says so much about the writing of vinland saga when you said Askeladd was the best antagonist and I sat here arguing with myself if he even was an antagonist
@@heroricspiritfreinen38 yes, and here's the thing I don't know wjere the anime is so no spoilers, there's so much more to him. I have a hsrd time out right calling him an antagonist
Yeah, Askeladd is probably one of the most complex characters of the series. He was originally introduced as an antagonist, but he later becomes more of a supporting character. I would even go as far as to say that Askeladd becomes sort of like a father figure to Thorfinn, which is ironic because he killed his father.
oh he was definitely an antagonist- but Vinland saga is good about recognizing what the role of an antagonist is: which is to challenge the hero(s) and reader. That's when you know you have a good character; they get the discussion going, they make the reader think about the conflict and care, either directly or indirectly. Getting that done isn't conditional on making the reader hate the character because of the cruel/ horrible things they do, it's the opposite. It's just writing someone recognizably human in who they are in spite of that (i.e. Griffith in his dream, Madara in his bitterness, hatred, and grief, Bradly from FMA in pragmatism about the powers to be when it comes to states etc.). But I still say Askeladd's an antagonist all the way through- because he always acts as someone who challenges Thorfinn to do better, it's just not in the way that readers/watchers would think when they first start the story.
My favorite thing about this show is the themes of religion and how it seems to compare norse mythology with christianity and also shows how much christianity has changed and not changed over the centuries. I also love how the characters religion seem to be the main drive of a fair amount of the characters, the only characters I would say aren’t driven by their religion is Thorfinn who just wants vengeance. Prince Canute for examples driven by his christianity either in accordance with god or more prominently in defiance of god, another example is Askeladd who is driven by the story his mother told him of a great warrior that would return and how maybe even because of his middle name he believes that he will at least try to be the warrior his mother was desperately waiting for.
@@Sendisky Sorry, but the manga is not even close to be super popular just because of a fucking plat on reddit. It's not close to the other ones like Berserk or Vagabond.

Spoiler Warning! I just finished the 24th episode, I have never watched an anime series that I could compare to Vinland Saga. After waching an episode I’ve had to stop and think or proceed what just happened. The story is so brutal but so beautiful. When Askeladd died and Thorfinn held him, that was one of the saddest scenes ever. I've read the first 100 chapters of the manga and let me tell you, it's a trip. A lot of 'old warrior' wisdom I've read in fantasy novels comes back here, but also Chekkov's Gun principle is accurate for every piece of dialogue.
As a Norwegian i can say that some of the stuff happening in the background of the show reminds me of some of the stories told by grandparents on a cold winter night, for example all the Askeladden stories.

Akira, Attack on Titan, and Tokyo Ghoul. But this is different. It’s not as colorful, it takes place in the dark ages after all so it relies on its edginess. It’s gritty and even grotesque. @@heroricspiritfreinen38 the dude was and is a mercenary. Killing people is his job. Blame the one who ordered the murder
Who's here after episode 18?

Even the manga is underrated. This story deserve all the eyes it can get.
Let it be unpopular, if it gets more popular the supid side of twitter will start saying trash out of it like they do with any other popular anime
@@theLikou1 the manga is so far from underrated lol. Shit gets plat on r/manga every chapter release
@@Sendisky Sorry, but the manga is not even close to be super popular just because of a fucking plat on reddit. It's not close to the other ones like Berserk or Vagabond.
Kinda sad Vinland saga isn’t getting much love never see anyone talk about it much
Ive been urging my friends to watch it but know one wants too for some reason
its because they have adhd and cant stand still for 5 seconds looking at well developed plot and deep characterization. they only care about jojo memes and shit posts
@@theprocrastinator6813 funny thing my friends don't want to watch jojo either
It's because Amazon picked it up. The same thing happened to dororo, Amazon is taking these seinen anime for themselves, but no one is gonna get amazon prime just for anime.
Juan Dlc cranky cuz jojo is good huh
"Spoiler warning" Ha you fool I'm already caught up in the M A N G A
Me too. The wait was too much for me
@@revolverocelot8106 Same here
Words to live by, with all of these recent anime lol/
😂
ooooh, i don't want to be tempted. i actually want to enjoy this anime. reading the AoT manga really killed my enjoyment of the anime.hahaha
I genuinely believe askeladd to be the best developed character within one season (roughly 24 episodes)
For sure. Although he's the antagonist, I think he's the lead character in the season
You cheeky boi. Don't think you can slip dat Gwent music in from Witcher 3 without me noticing now?
lmao thought the same thing
ah witcher of culture aren't we?
AKUMETSU
...sorry. I just really loved that manga.
And nier automata music
There's even Game of Thrones ost
"No one is your enemy."
One week later, kills everyone in his way.
i followed vinland saga from the beginning...i'm not disappointed
I regret sleeping on it for so long after hearing the amount of praise it gained just off the anime. Time to take the plunge with the anime now.
same i been since the beginning
Vinland Saga is a Masterpiece, way to put it
True
It's sad how anime fans make anime look only about cute waifus instead of something like this.
Nah
Spoiler Warning!
I just finished the 24th episode, I have never watched an anime series that I could compare to Vinland Saga. After waching an episode I’ve had to stop and think or proceed what just happened. The story is so brutal but so beautiful. When Askeladd died and Thorfinn held him, that was one of the saddest scenes ever. He was an enemy to Thorfinn but also a guide so it was really sad to watch Thorfinn lose someone close and his only duty to get revenge for Thors, to kill Askeladd. Afterall he wanted to beat Askeladd in a duel. This anime definetely is the best anime I’ve ever seen, I should maybe start to read the manga.
you should read it you should
???? i mean sure but like where ?? ive never read manga before only books
I'm an oilman it says that the website isnt working anymore but thank you still
True....Vinland saga gives a different and unique vibe.
If you think watching it was good, reading puts it In such a deeper perspective. Really a masterpiece ,and I’ll shout out vagabond if I had to say any other .
"A true warrior doesn't need a sword."
He uses daggers so it's ok.
Thorfinn: daddy never said anything about using daggers 🗡 😏
Never give knifes to blonde people
Askeladd ist the best character I have ever seen, he was absolutely phenomenal
Askedead
@@oannguyen4818 ayy lmao
He is cool
If hisoka ended up raising gon
Samatar Mohamed and stopped having his weirdogasams
I've read the first 100 chapters of the manga and let me tell you, it's a trip. A lot of 'old warrior' wisdom I've read in fantasy novels comes back here, but also Chekkov's Gun principle is accurate for every piece of dialogue.
The song at the end is Ashes of Dreams from Nier
Nier osts are the best
Wow, thanks! I was trying to search for this music, I had a feeling that I already listened somewhere, now I know why
“Viking Saskue” so controversial yet so brave
J FAV at least in the first season.
Sasuke is great as a character
You should watch this....👍👍👍👍th-cam.com/video/eKtsO-X0iT8/w-d-xo.html
@@willsonjohn9179 not greater than Thorfinn, that's for sure
As a Norwegian i can say that some of the stuff happening in the background of the show reminds me of some of the stories told by grandparents on a cold winter night, for example all the Askeladden stories.
I tihnk askeladd character was isnpired by askeladden
I've dodged this series for two years. When I finally finished it, I regretted not watching it earlier. Vinland Saga is now one of my favorite stories of all time.
You know Garnt's serious when he keeps the jokes and the clowning to a minimum. What a video.
WIT Studio adapting two of the best anime this year, you love to see it.
Yaasss. No other competitions.
AOT is a sequel, anime of the year is only given to new series and vinland should win it
Heh, I haven't noticed them doing any anime of the year contenders... Wasn't Kimetsu no Yaiba made by ufotable?
Demon Slayer will be anime for the year for such simple reasons:
Gorgeous animation
Great voice acting
Shounen Cliche done right
Massive socia media exposure
Soundtrack
Vinland Saga is for niggas who are already into anime but want to watch real quality and understand the quality difference. Demon Slayer is for basically anyone, even an introduction to anime for new comers
@@mugen4516 that's the sad part. People will pass up Vinland because of the lack of hype around it. Meanwhile Demonslayer, which is a boring slog of a show until episode 6 or 7 maybe, is easily available and ready to watch and excessively hyped up. Vinland being in Amazon Prime hell doesn't help it either.
I started this series on an impulse last year while I was studying the Icelandic sagas and obsessively consumed it all shortly after. Getting this amazing adaptation so soon after? God, I feel so lucky. I'm so happy that they expanded on Thorfinn's time with Askeladd's band, as much as it absolutely breaks my heart to see him dragged even further through the dirt. I'm really excited for the coming weeks. This manga had some of my favorite single chapters and scenes.
Yeah, I really liked how they took all the flashbacks and just merged them into one big prolouge for the story. It made it a much more slow burn, and ultimately makes Thorfinn's transformation much more heartwrenching.
So is the manga good now? I stopped reading when there were those 20 chapters of agriculture/farming, but before that it was great
@@LolliDepp those chapters are one of the best ones dude wtf, Torfinn is changing a lot there, they are as slow as necessary, and their ending is pretty dope aswell
NOBUNAGA ODA!!!
The nexus point of all human history.
meloD30 no?
according to Japan, lmfao
Wait, I think that's actually the plot of Samurai Deeper Kyo.
The show never let's you forget how brutal that time was. Few light hearted episodes would be followed by soul crushing brutality.
