Fascinating how he sounds like an audience that discovers these moments in the manga as they come along (while talking about his favorite scene) rather than as a creator with a God perspective. As if Askeladd and these characters are real who really said these dialogs and performed the actions in front of him, and not actually him giving them their voices.
This man is so cool. He tries to get his philosophical message through via manga. That was very powerful, around 13:00. He's trying so hard to tell people just how stupid war is and that it's completely preventable. And it's true. He cares so much about us as people. I'm so glad someone like this guy got a lot of recognition. @ 24:40 he thinks it was a mistake to not hold back with how brutal he was in the manga, but it was probably the biggest reason it's so successful overseas. However, I do understand that feeling. There are a lot of people that still didn't get the message. Those who go "Season 2 is so boring, I want more fights like in season 1". They get spoiled by S1's brutal battles and probably the brutality of S1 in general. The way he goes about making his manga doesn't feel like a mangaka doing what they love. It feels like a politician that got into politics even though he hated politics. Yet he got into it BECAUSE he hated politics and wanted to make a change for the better. "I draw a lot of guts and gore, yet I like cute things" this tends to be the case when it comes to doing something for a long time. He draws it so much that he became affectionate to the opposite because it's such a refresher. Even using mangaka as the example, his hobbies are fishing and camping, both of which, takes you out of society and into tranquil quiet, doing almost nothing. While mangaka you're always working, always drawing, always planning, always writing. Work just never ends. When the balance isn't there, people tend to sway the other way in order to rebalance themself. This was an awesome interview. Vinland Saga is such an experiences everyone should live through reading the manga or/and watching the anime. What an amazing man and an amazing story. Thank you for everything, Mr. Yukimura.
For me , whenever I read manga or watched anime , I'd always seen them take killing very lightly. My perspective is that killing someone, robs them of their future life , sending them into nothingness. I dont believe in heaven or hell, so you just end the conciousness. I always wanted to write a story partly about the weight of killing. Then I saw vinland saga, and it was the first I've seen that capitalizes on the idea
Completely agree! Most shows threat taking a life like it's no big deal or without consequences, specially with their protagonists. But seeing the main character realizing he was a terrible person in his youth despite trying to avenge his father death by killing a terrible person was amazing. I just love how Thorfinn starts to deal with the consequences of his time with Askelaad while tries to proves that he became a better person and a “true warrior".
Great interview! Makoto Yukimura seems like a very thoughtful, caring and focused person. Asking if war really is necessary is usually pushed to the side and told off as childish thinking, that's why i appreciate his clear focus on this question. The Father son relationship also is portraied beautifully, in its good and bad ways in the story. And yes, askeladd indeed is very kawaii

貴重なロングインタビューを本当にありがとう!
Then I saw vinland saga, and it was the first I've seen that capitalizes on the idea
i hope you give writing a shot
Wow, I love the Blue Giant manga and its great that he is such a huge fan of it too. Hopefully the series following the Blue Giant run also get translated into English soon!
I'm sure it's getting an anime Series or Mobie really soon. It sounds REALLY interesting, so I'm very interested in both Manga and Anime.
Its funny looking at the expressions on Garnt's face, I wonder how much of the Japanese he actually understands as he listening to him talk. The face of uncertainty, I recognize it well lol.
Thank you Gigguk! It's rare in life to meet your heroes/someone you don't know but hold in high regard, and for them to be even greater than how you envision them. Yukimura is one such person. This made my week!
Vinland Saga is a masterpiece, one of my favorite stories in manga and anime, and I'm so thankful to be alive right now as Yukimura is concluding it.
28:25 He is such a wholesome author
I can’t imagine someone ever being rude to this amazing man he’s so wholesome
良いインタビューでした。有難うございます🙏
Such a good interview/video. Thanks man for the amazing opportunity to see this
Such a madlad like Miura, really dig Vinland Saga, one of the best char dev in a manga and overall masterpiece.
Bro season 2 was so good holy fuck.
This is exactly what I wanted to see. I have read some past interviews, but I never got a good video of it. This has ended my search. Thanks Garnt!
I'm so incredibly glad you got this chance to interview the GOAT himself. I absolutely love this man and his work.
I will read anything he'll write about in the future. He has mine and many other's trust to write another amazing world, story and with deep fulfilling characters.
Makoto Yukimura, thank you
What a cool guy, it's interesting seeing the kind of person behind Vinland Saga. he's the GOAT for a reason
Whenever I need to feel better about myself im going to watch this video of Makoto Yukimura saying "I love youu"
I also grew up reading Akkanbe Ikkyu (or just Ikkyu in France) and Ishi no Hana (Fleurs de pierre in french)! Please read them or push them to be translated in your country.
Lol this why Garnt gets always picked to host Trash Taste whenever theres a guest on. Such a good interviewer and broadcaster.
One of the greatest revelation about this interview is, that Vinland Saga is basically just the adult version of fucking Viky the Viking! :D
The animated show was really popular in germany (probably central/northern europe in general) for decades and of course I watched it as a kid. I now see that many elements are really quite similiar.
Also Yukimura being a fan of Andy Weir, no wonder people like his work!
Yukimura Makoto is the goat. He is such a wholesome and sweet person
Askeladd is such a good character that even the mangaka himself couldn't predict how he would act in front of Thorfinn
He's such a chill guy. Almost too socially comfortable for a japanese manga artist
Great interview man..thanks for interviewing this legendary mangaka! :D
Thank you for the amazing interview ! Such a great session
It's just nice to see Garnt wearing OTV merch! Looking forward to see more collabs from both groups in the future.
I would vote for this man to get the cultural price here in Denmark for giving such a nice storytelling about vikings
Holy shit a Vinland Saga Byzantium Arc would be incredible!
Wait wait wait ... this beautiful man is the creator of Planetes !?
How the hell did i miss this piece of information !?
I absolutely love the series.
Thank you so much Yukimura Sensei for your hard work.
Now, an interview with the master Naoki Urasawa is needed for the upcoming animation of his work PLUTO

Thank you for bringing an impactful, inspiring story to the world.
Yukimura seems like a very kind and wholesome person
thankyou Yukimura-san, your work really give me meaning and another perspective on how i see the world. I had never read a manga like vinland saga before, and vinland saga was my first seinen manga. And i really feel the weight of every character that you develop. I really appreciate your work.
Yukimura Sensei is such an amazing human being and mangaka. Thank you for all your hard work sensei
GOAT anituber and GOAT author in one video 👏
wow being able to hear an author that I admire so much like this is strange (mangakas usually are very private) thank you so much. I'd loved to ask him why he time jumped after the baltic arc straight to Vinland arc, I just wanted to see more of Thorfinn and Gudrid hahahaha
Thank you so much for this Garnt and Yukimura sensei. ❤
Wow man you’re so lucky! Makoto Yukimura is one of my favorite Authors in general, his viewpoints as well as his writing hit different for me.
When Yukimura-sensei said “I love you”, I legitimately cried. I really felt that and believe him❤
