Juvenile flying-fox first night in care: this is Pelican

- Pelican is a very small looking juvenile Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who ended up hanging low in a hedge in a small suburban front yard.
She looks like she's about 16 weeks old, but her forearm measures out at around 6 months old & her weight says she's about 100g underweight. She has a small cute face, a lot of battitude, and the language of a salty sailor with the self-confidence to back it up.
In care she's not quite sure what she's meant to do, and if she should maintain her cranky at me, or just let me help her. She's still shocked, but the analgesia, glucose, fluids and rest are helping to reduce her anxiety and adrenaline. She vacillates between being accepting and calm, and a little snippy at me.
I'm starting to get a better feel for her injury from seeing how she moves, and the chances for her recovery and survival
She has maintained her bright eyes and is enthusiastic about drinking juice so I'm feeling hopeful about her survival.
What a little fighter!
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.

Go, Pelican, go!
(By which I mean “rest and recover and put on that missing weight”)
Not to mention…go pee.🖤🇨🇦
@@tamarrajames3590 Also very important!
Even with all the trauma, some of them learn so quickly to drink from the syringe, not something in their wild experience. What a fighter for survival, even down to her last reserves. I hope the ripped-out thumbnail is able to eventually grow back. So glad she is receiving the absolute best care now so she finally has a chance to grow and thrive.
She thinks the magical juice stick is the greatest thing ever invented
I love the look on their faces when they realise there's yummy stuff in the syringes.
And pelican is a great name!
She was pretty dry. Let's hope the bear is wet the next time you check. A lovely girl.
Ooh, she’s a curious battie, looking around at things. Beautiful eyes 👀 Such awareness in them. Wishing Pelican all the best. ❤
She can really inhale the juice! And she definitely learned an excellent hang, very slinky😀. Keep going, Miss Pelican! I gets so much better.
Lovely update Meg, thank you for your tender loving care with Miss Pelican.🩶🦇🤗💕💕 Salty language and Battitude are ingredients for a Survivor.👍🥰
Thank you for keeping us updated with little Pelican, Meg. She’s looking good. 💙
Shes got the face of a lil angel. Super cute!! I'm loving the small sassy moments too, just enough to remind us all that shes a wild baby! Keeping all convenient bits crossed for her
I love it when you give them glucose, juice, or fruit or what ever it is that they really like Meg. And then they look at you like, “Hey this is good..that lady is alright by me. 🥰
You can see their expressions change from "oh God I'm going to die" to "this monster has food!"
Imagine the books you could write if they could tell you how they ended up in care. I'd love to hear the stories of their lives. Hoping for a happy ending for her.
The way you smell the stuffies everytime you take the sweetheart out of the incubator 😂😂😂 It’s so authentic.
LOL. It's been really rainy and humid here and everything feels a little damp and cold, and I can't always tell if the teddies are a little damp, so I sniff them.
I do it all the time if I can't decide if they've weed yet.
Im so glad Pelican seems to be doing well, i pray she continues to get better. she sure is a little fighter. She's adorable ❤ goid luck Pelican. Thank you Meg ❤️ love and blessings from the UK 🇬🇧 ❤️ 💛
She's a sweetheart......Continue to recover little Pelican...🦇💜
She looked like a big spider in the Thumbnail with her folded wings at angles, the darling. 💖💕 Good eating for recovery, Pelican.
Love the pink dressing gown hanging boudoir 💖
Yes, she does! A spider... that's so cute and funny 🥰 🕷🦇
Pelican doesn't know she's hit the mega jackpot lotto with Meg. Little girl's had a rough go till now. Thank you for the update, Meg!
I love when they're low key feisty and bite the towel then look up at you like they're saying "yeah, how'd you like that? I'll do it again too"
She really does have an angel face.
I agree!! Both eyes are very shiny!! This is good, because I have learned that if they don’t blink the eyes get damaged!! Go, go, go Pelican!!
So beautiful yoghourt mustaches !!!!
Little thirstling ❤
Pelican is looking so much better. Great job reviving her.
She was hungry & thirsty 🙂
She looks so small and like she needs some good food. Thank you for helping her Meg
Glad to see the juice and yogurt went over so well!
🦇❤
You hang in there lil pelican, ur in good hands with Meg. ❤❤❤🦇🦇🦇
Go Pelican! I have high hopes for her! 🤞
I love watching that little tongue go for the juice. The tongue has good color too.
Oh those eyes 👀 🍁🦇🇨🇦
She has a lovely temperament, little pelican. Can wait to see her get better, thanks Meg
From one bat-loving Meg to another, I applaud your work with the beautiful batties. Pelican is looking MUCH better now. I was worried at first. A night and day difference. 🦇 ❤
That thumbnail!! I want that picture on a T-shirt! 🤩👍🏼😁😁
Oh she's such a cutie 🥰
I'll keep all my fingers crossed for her ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼👋🏼🇩🇪
Imagine she had a little Megabattie shop with a shirt and knickknacks with lil bats on them. I would go broke! :,D
Also lots of profits could go to care for the batties
@@sofyuchiha9I thought there were T-shirts available, but I checked and didn’t see her making any mention of it on her channel. That said, I’m sure I remember looking through stuff you could buy. Maybe ask her…she is great at answering questions.🖤🇨🇦
The thumbnail is very low resolution and wouldn't look good on a t shirt; I just screen shotted it off the video because I didn't like the thumbnails YT had selected.
I have some stuff on Red Bubble but I don't have time to create more.
I wouldn't have a shop - too much work and too much effort creating and stocking a range of things which people never buy.
Shops are hard work and very time consuming.
I have t shirts on Red Bubble.
I agree, Meg, "what a little fighter"!!! I love this cranky girl
Your kindness is beautiful.
💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕
So precious, thank you for the work you do!
Love this lil one (as all ones), in your care ... ❇🖤❇😍
Such an expressive face. ❤❤ She loved the apple juice but was not too sure about the yogurt. She is totally adorable!
Yoghurt's food; juice is fluid and hydration; her body is telling her that she needs hydration first before she needs the protein in yoghurt.
That’s the cutest “got yoghurt” face ever ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊
Hopefully she will survive, what a sweet heart.
Pelican is absolutely gorgeous!! Keeping my fingers tightly crossed!!!🫠🥰❤️🦇🇨🇦
What a cutie! I love her attitude! She is a fighter!
What a sweet girl!
Bless her! And bless you! ❤️
This is the most heartwarming show on TH-cam. I love you guys and your little charges.
Thanks Pat; are you new to my channel? You might find the videos where teh bats don't survive a little less heartwarming.
Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
so pretty,,, i adore bats,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so cute
❤
That little tongue just laps it up!❤
Oh my heart ❤ the little yogurt mustache.
Yay a survivor. Wishing Pelican a long happy wild battie life with many babies. So cute. Much calmer since her big wings hedge rescue.
She's just on the rehab route for now; time will tell how long this will be.
Call Maggie and tell her to come back to Australia right now because you have a Bat who needs assistance with urination and since she's the best "pee magnet" ever, she should come home right now and help Pelican wee!♥️🦇😘
I think she's still in Oz but she doesn't do house calls in the middle of the night.
Maggie is mostly around during baby season and likes to live her normal social life for the rest of the year
This is the only channel where I read the notes.
Haha, I converted you!. I try to put good info in the description so I can avoid having to say it over and over again; it started out as self preservation, and ended up being a wa I could communicate with my viewers.
Oh my gosh, her little yogurt mustache was darling!
I love the yoghurt mo's
🦇❤️ Such a pretty & active/aware little one…. Hoping for the best!
^^ Pelican is much calmer now that she realizes these giants are helping her.
Here's hoping this lively little girl batty makes it~
She'll be fine
They're actually very cute.
Surprisingly?
Welcome to Megabattie, Andrea

Soooooo adorable❣️
The little tongue 👅 awww 😂is 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
Love the yoghurt lips on miss pelican ❤
Very pretty little face! If she's a survivor - what I hope she's going to be - will the missing thumb claw grow back eventually?
I don't think so, but I was just asking myself if it will be a handicap for her in the wild. If it were essential, she would probably have had to be put down. I think they hook the joint over a branch to invert anyway, so the thumbnail may be more defensive than functional, though it could slow her climbing on bark.
It may or may grow back, depending on the damage done to the nail bed and the bone under the claw.
@@chezmoi42 From what I know, it's not much of a handicap for them, some need to have a thumb amputated and can be released though. They seem to adapt pretty quickly.
@@Megabattie Just like a human fingernail. When I was a kid a horse bit my finger, doing a lot of damage to the nail and nail bed (I spare you the gory details, it was not pretty), but thankfully it grew back perfectly.
@@dany.adelfinger Silly you for allowing a horse's teeth and your finger to come into contact; glad your finger healed.
Hope Pelican's nail will regrow but it does depend on the bone underneath still having a blood supply and the nail bed being functional
I love the face as you were manipulating her thumbs. 🤣
What a sweetheart she's turning out to be. Admirable lapping technique; I'm tongue-tied, so in her place I'd have ended up with a sticky ruff and an earful of juice. I hope she won't miss her thumb claw. (Off to the nail salon?)
We'll see how the thumb injury starts to heal (or doesn't) over the next week or 2 before deciding if it needs a tidy up and amputation of any dead bone.
@@Megabattie So glad they can get along without them; it's such a fragile part of their anatomy.
She is such a sweetie, hope she gets better soon.
She has to regrow her thumbnail but she's doing well and has been transferred to a carer with other juveniles.
There are other videos of her time in care; search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/Pelican and the videos should come up
Aww he didn’t want to let go of his stuffy
She
I cant get over how much these bats look like my little black deer head chihuahua lol it’s crazy…I wish I could post a photo😂
pretty pretty girl. Greats jobs Megabattie.
I have loved❤😊 bat's for so long an they are so good for our environment !! They are more scared of us an I do hope parents of children teach them that an take them to zoos an get facts about them . Such a cutie 😊
I never thought about bats other than as an abstract animal before I accidentally fell in love with them whilst learning about wildlife rescue; now look at me.
Whew..... I was worried we'd see electrocution deterioration with this one once the adrenalin wore off. But Pelican is bright-eyed and zealously drinking her body weight in apple juice. Great to see.
As I explained in my (serial) descriptions on the previous video, I didn't think she'd been electrocuted because it didn't quite look right to me; she has bright eyes, not glassy eyes; the thumb didn't look burned, rather damaged from trauma, and it didn't make sense to me that electrocution was the cause; it was an outside diagnosis but I felt Pelican was too well to be an electrocution scenario.
How gordeous ❤️
🦇❤️
I love to watch the difference when you switch to yoghurt. They are never quite as enthusiastic
Sometimes they are, but she knows what she wants and it's fluids and sugar over protein at this stage.
I love their face the first time they have a smoothie, so very cute! I hope and pray she does well! She is beautiful and bright eyed. Can they grow their thumbs back? 💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕
They can grow the nail part of the claw back if the nail bed is intact or even partly intact, and the bone underneath is still alive.
They don't grow their thumbs back. They can survive in the wild with no thumbs ion they're born to it and that's all they know but they generally have tiny little nubs which give them some grip. One of Pelican's thumbs is fine - the swelling is going down.
We have to wait and see what goes on with her damaged claw thumb before we can decide on an action or management. Whichever way she will be releasable.
@@Megabattie well that makes sense that the nail part can grow back, duh I guess I wasn’t thinking. But I’m happy to hear that they can be released and survive even if it shouldn’t grow back. Thank you for everything thank you for answering questions. I really truly enjoy, Megabattie it’s always a part of my day, some days I watch one or two videos some nights I watch 10!!!
Well see how she goes over the next week or so and work out what is or isn't going to heal and make a plan for her.
Pelican is a darling girl, and so pretty. I think she is trying to put that 100 grams on all at once, she must have been without enough food for some time cause she’s not letting any get past her now. I like that she still has her battitude, and it was good to see her hanging so nice and loose. I hope she has a good wee after all that juice and fluid, and that she continues to do well. She looks very confused by all this, but she is a sweetheart.✨🖤🇨🇦
I was at the aviary this morning and she had her head in a bucket of fruit, half an hour after I brought her back from an anaesthetic and xray.
The other bats are disturbed by the commotion of the last few days (bats being moved around) and are mostly boycotting the fruit because they're stressed, but she's there day in and day out, single handedly trying to empty the buckets all on her own.
YAY
@@Megabattie That is wonderful news, hearing she has good appetite, and is helping herself is a giant step for a little lady. I am presuming that she has opened her bladder and bowels well now, and just needs to heal, and pick up her weight. The best news we could get for little Pelican…she is doing well. Brava to all concerned.🖤🇨🇦
PS: one of the subscribers was asking about T-shirts and merchandise for the channel. I seem to recall there being a variety of tops with Megisms, and some with bats, but I couldn’t find a link for her and a friend. They wanted the thumbnail of Pelican on a shirt. Just passing it on for two recent subscribers.🖤🇨🇦
I know they wanted a t shirt of Pelican but that was a very very low res image which I screen shotted from the video.
And I don't have time to put stuff on t shirts or do uploads.
I don't get paid enough for my time, to create merchandise and upload it
@@Megabattie I can definitely understand not having merchandise high on your to do list. The image of Pelican was very cute though, so I can understand them wanting it, I just thought they might find one they like in existing stock. 🖤🇨🇦
@@tamarrajames3590 I'm looking for someone to upload and manage my Megabattie Red Bubble from my pix, but even that's a heap of work and means I have to take high res images (when my hands are already full of octopus batties) and you never get a good candid image of a bat when you're wrangling them.
Poor baby. Bit late coming to this. Xxx
Wow, seeing how much re-hydration you gave her in various forms there over the course of a few hours, it seems she must have been very dehydrated! She was also quite hungry.
I give them 5-10% of their bodyweight in fluids in the first rehydration, depending on how bad they are and their overall presentation. If they haven't done a wee, I continue to inject fluids each time I check them out, until pee happens (and don't we love a good pee?).
I LOVE HER!❤
Great video thx for sharing.
I have the same reaction to yogurt. Lol
Hope your “twin” is doing well up there in Roo land 😂 Pelican is gorge with those soulful eyes❤
Catherine is doing just fine
That was some of the most enthusiastic juice drinking I have seen so far! I will be hopeful for her recovery right along with you.
Can the claw grow back? Or will it depend on how much damage the initial injury might have caused? It must take a long time for a claw to regrow.
Like your fingernail can grow back, so can a claw nail grow back if the nail bed is intact or mostly intact. but it will depend on whether or not the tip of the bone under the claw is still alive when it starts to heal. It's a wait and see game for this injury at the moment.
❤🦇❤
😇❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️Sorry I'm behind Meg....was forced to have injections in my retina and couldn't see to watch!😇🖤
No worries - plenty of time to catch up.
❤️🩹
Is it possible to over hydrate them? They are so small I guess there must be a maximum amount of fluid. Thanks for the work you do. I plan on sending a donation to Tonga and mentioning Megabattie.
Their kidneys don't concentrate the urine unless they're really dehydrated in which case the kidneys have little fluid to work with.
They just pee out the excess.
With the subcut fluids, it doesn't get absorbed but stays as a bolus in their scruff injection site until the body is ready to handle it
😀
🙏🙏🎉👍💓
Some bats microchipped?
Yes, we began chipping the bats a few years ago, and more people are chipping now, so I do try to check if a bat is chipped if I remember, and if it survives it will be checked again because we chip them when they're survivors in care.
Why would a bat have a microchip?
Because I chipped her so we could identify her and follow her time in care and if she's caught later we have her story. It's difficult to get a banding licence so we're chipping them now.
Once they're a survivor (after a few days in care) or once they go in with other bats, it helps if we can identify them.
@@Megabattie ah, thank you! Make sense to me!
Wait microchip you found microchips in bats before can someone explain why that is
We chip the bats so we know which one is which. If they've survived 48 hours and look like they're going to be a survivor we give them microchips so the right records go with the bat to different carers through the system
@@Megabattie ohh ok i get it now
