Baby flying-foxes growing up: Auntie Jack shows us her babies

  • The amazing Auntie Jack sent me this footage of some of the babies growing up in her care.
Barff shows us his golden fur...
Spritz, the tiny premmie who took over 3 weeks for her eyes to fully open, is a big girl now.
Kevi, the little one from the Wolli Creek colony who was rescued when Jess and James were in the colony and I commandeered James with his height to wield my pole is a confident little big girl now; Gin Fizz makes an appearance in this video on Jack's arm while Kevi is strutting her stuff.
Sidecar tries to derail the videos by flapping like crazy and trying to climb over the other batties.
We meet Tia Maria, one of the Queensland blacks, plus a little blonde girl who is very sweet.
Tia Maria is very stressed. She was another very young baby at rescue, and has had a tough time sharing her humum with many other "siblings". She and Gin Fizz developed an aberrant and codependent behaviour called "sucking" where one pup sucks on another for comfort. In this case the sucking was mutual, and Jack came in to find them lying under the airer cuddled together and sucking on each other. Great emotional damage can result from this behaviour, but also physical damage if a delicate bit of anatomy is sucked and scarred from the trauma.
They've been separated but because everyone is so inundated with babies, Jack has nowhere to send one of the pair to prevent a recurrence. Gin Fizz is doing OK now she and Tia Maria are separated, however Tia Maria is still stressed and will suck ANY pup she can cuddle up to.
The treatment for this is to regress the pup back to babyhood; Tia just wants to be loved individually, so Jack's got her on a mummy roll (like little babies), with a dummy (pacifier); she's fed with a bottle like a little baby, and put to bed like a little baby, until she feels secure enough to start growing up and being the big girl that she is and will be. Jack also "wears" her in a pocket on her t shirt (the hem of the shirt is pinned up to form a hands-free pocket for Tia to sleep in and still be near her humum.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospital.org/donate/
Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me for Auntie Jack.
    .
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie or Auntie Jack
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

Really love how AJ finishes with one and then just sticks it up on her shoulder, before pulling the next one out to show off. Reminiscent of how Meg will sometimes stick batty rolls in her pocket while doing other tasks around the apartment.

Oh, Auntie Jack 🥰! This was a truly awesome video. It was so good to see how our babies have grown! Barff is absolutely gorgeous! Look at all that blonde fur! Poor Spritz. I’m sure she will come right with a little special attention and a little time. She was so premature… So glad our beautiful Gin Fizz recovered and was able to reintegrate. Spritz will get there with Auntie Jack’s expertise! Oh and Whitey’s face! Wow 🤩! Gorgeous! My brain is already exploding! I can’t imagine how you manage to keep them all straight! They were all adorable and worthy of being named ❤. My brain fog just makes the names evaporate on me (oh , Blue Collar! She was pretty, too) 😂.

Love the batties, and Auntie Jack is happy to do lots of babies; for a few years she didn't get any babies in her area and once I heard that I made it my mission to supply her with babies every year until she's too derelict to manage anymore. She's so delighted, since she isn't in an area which gets lots of babies locally unless the colony is in residence and there is a heat or starvation event.
She's delighted to take babies from me and I'm delighted to offload them onto her. Win win win (me, her, and the batties).

Thank you Auntie Jack. Poor little Tia, she's undoubtedly been traumatized by the loss of her mother. I have two female 4 month old kittens who were prematurely separated from their mother and one latches on to a fold on my neck. She's very agitated when i block my neck and can't get comfortable. I substitute rubbing her neck with my fingers which helps. She's learning.

Normally we'd totally separate the babies; different carers and different locations, plus different creches.
Gin Fizz will go through creche before Spritz, so they shouldn't meet up in creche. Otherwise I'll organise to get her to another creche so there is no repeat behaviour during the stressful time of entering creche.

Auntie Jack is an amazing lady. I only met her about 5-6 years ago when I collected a batty from her on my way back from Queensland. SHe's about halfway between Toowoomba and Sydney.
She offered for me to stay the night but I didn't know her and I have had my share of looney batty people so I booked a motel. It turned out Auntie J was totally amazing and totally awesome and she's become such a good friend and I regret not quite being game enough to take up her offer.
I was punished for my mistrust though, when there was a power outage in the motel (which was very cheap and nasty), and the aircon didn't work, and the fan they gave me also didn't work, and I stupidly opened the front door of the room to get some air and it let all the bugs in, who then dive bombed me while I was trying to read on the iPad. It was disgustingly hot and combined with the power outage and the bugs, a very unpleasant night.
Jack also had a power outage but she has a granny flat with fly screens which could have prevented the bug infestation, and since the power didn't go out until around midnight, the room would have been cool until then.

      Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.

Very adorable seeing the little ones in "all" their glory.
Meg. I have possibly 2 questions..1. Do you release blacks and greys together into one colony? and 2. Do they breed together ?

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

If it's a mixed colony they can be released together.
In general the blacks know they're blacks and the greys know they're greys and they don't mix, however there are occasional hybrids.

are you having people that wants do your work? its so important!

    • @Megabattie

People think they want to do this work but it's not something you can just dabble in occasionally; many people like to raise 2 babies per year but nothing else.
Most people have lives of their own, families, limited finances, and batty rescue and care doesn't fit well with a full and separate life, as well as the necessity to earn a living, and in an urban area most of the city dwellers live in apartments, which don't lend themselves well to housing and rehabbing bats. I get around my apartment restrictions by only doing overnight care for adults, and only caring for babies in my home; I do, however, do a lot of rescues and initial intensive care and have honed my skills in those areas.

I laughed at the name Sidecar 🤭✨💖✨💖✨ I'm still brand new so I'm still learning about all these truly wonderful people 🥰 hope you're doing alright, everyone! Stay cool and safe xxx ~ Rose 🌹

      Hi Mama Quartz
How long have you been with my channel.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

Sucker/suckees are babies who are stressed and displaying aberrant emotional behaviour. The sucker will suck on another baby for comfort. The suckee will acquiesce to this behaviour. Once established, both babies are damaged emotionally and the suckee can be damaged physically from the sucking. If the sucker sucks on another bat’s ear the ear can be permanently damaged, or if they suck on another bat’s penis, the penis may scar and contract and prevent the bat from peeing. The only way to fix it is to permanently separate the pair.
So one bat stays in Sydney and one bat goes north to another creche.
The suckee is in the most trouble emotionally, because it is just allowing it to happen and isn’t actively trying to get its emotional needs met.
The sucker seems to do a little better, because it’s actively seeking to get its needs met.
The sooner the behaviour is recognised and the pair are separated, the better off the babies are, and the less work it is to fix them and get them back to being emotionally stable. There are various pre indicators for the behaviour and if you catch them in the very early stages before the behaviour becomes overt, there is minimal emotional damage.
Gin Fizz and Tia Maria were sucking each other's girly bits. They both had very sore butts which bled when they toileted for a few days.

@Megabattie I first found you in summer (winter for you) last year, but I started watching daily since about November? Mostly catching up on previous videos so I'm still not too familiar with everyone yet. And don't worry, I read descriptions about 90% of the time. Sometimes I forget or I'm eating or too comfy or cold to poke my hands out of the duvet lol. I know rescue isn't always good.. I'm a fierce advocate for pet rescue, primarily dogs which is my area of expertise! 😊✨️🩷✨️ I follow a few rescuers and I'm no stranger to the cruelty of nature and more potently, human beings. My favourite breed, chihuahuas, are so often dropped, kicked, slapped, neglected and abused.. the things people do to such tiny dogs..who then go on to spread the lies that chihuahuas are naturally aggressive. No, they're reactive because people wind them up and push past their boundaries until they snap. I'm constantly fighting to correct people's negative views about them and show that they're funny, snuggly, loyal little bubs who want nothing more than to be warm and comfy in their humans arms or napping in a Sunbeam ✨️🩷✨️
As for the sucking, that sounds very painful >_0 ouch. I do apologise if the information was in the description, I should have checked first 😥 but I do love learning from your videos and enjoy talking to you directly! ☺️🩷 sorry if I write a lot or talk weird, I'm autistic and I learn by asking questions 😊
Thank you very much for the explanation! I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. You're a very lovely person ☺️✨️🩷✨️🫂🫂🫂

glad to have you as a viewer.
yes, chihuahuas get a bad rap - I don't think I've ever met one who wasn't aggressive, in a delusional kind of "I'm big and scary and you should be terrified of me" way. I think they're very protective of their owners which makes them appear aggressive.
Batzilla's Miss Daisy thinks I'm a threat and often has a go at me.

Oh dear lmao! Well, I'm always more than happy to give advice on how to help with that! It's so much easier and less work than people think ☺️✨️🩷✨️ I hope you have a good rest of the week Meg 😊 if you ever just fancy a chitchat, I'm happy to sit down for a natter! Take care! ✨️🩷✨️🫂🫂🫂

The dummies aren't loaded with anything; they love them because if they're tripping onto something with their teeth they know they can't fall. They bite onto their mum's nipple in flight so they don't fall while she's flying; biting onto something is safety.
