    Dear Anne, Thank you for taking the time to make theses videos. One thing that gets over looked on old trucks is the entire wiring harness , its worn out... its 67 years old and its been cut into and modified and lived outside . 67 years ago that was a reliable truck .. The gas gauge worked , the lights all worked , and the generator worked , and the starter worked , a complete new wiring harness will be the first step in making it a dependable truck .. even if it is mostly original ... You have enough skill to do the job ... good luck with your new home /farm Pete m

      Thanks Pete! Yep a new harness will come, that's just a super big time investment and I'm trying to work out the major kinks first.

    I'm glad y'all were spared. I am still making repairs on my home from the tornado that hit us last May. Fortunately I have been unemployed which gives me time to help other folks as well. Lots of sympathy for communities who have been hit by disasters and inspired by the numerous people who turn out in droves to help.

    It's nice to have enough room around the engine to work. Not so on new vehicles. Otter hands are adorable, baby otters are spectacular in every way. Caleb sure knows how to compliment.

    And, as is traditional among the gen x post technology revi-traditional ex-city homesteader tribe, all work on vintage automotive projects must be accomplished between 8:30 and 11:30 PM on a night with no moon. And all work must be supervised by a cat. Loving how excited you are with everything that you are doing!

    I am jealous of your truck. I drove a 53 Belaire Chevy while I was in school and college. Always liked the 53 pickup. They are easy vehicles to work on. I did a crank rod bearing change out in one evening. Sold my 53 to a coworker who replaced the clutch and the sold it to a high school student that worked at the local Tasty-Freeze. One day while the car was parked behind the Tasty-Freeze, a big wind storm came along and blew a huge boxelder tree over on the Chevy. It almost collapsed it in half. Moral of this sad story is never park your 53 pickup under a big tree!

    Very happy to see that it was your "farm truck" you traded for the golf cart. I was disappointed on the last video when you said you traded your truck for the golf truck - I thought you meant this gorgeous old Chevy! Did not think that was a fair trade. • @markgramlin105
    @markgramlin105 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its so cool to see you wrenching on your own truck. It seems weird to hear you talk about parts for that truck being obsolete. The truth is that every piece of that truck is available. I think you could build a new one from the ground up. From experience I can tell you that driving a vehicle like that on the highway today can be a hair raising experience. The manual steering and brakes do not allow you to react to changing conditions in traffic like more modern vehicles allow everyone else on the road to do. The thing is that all the other drivers do not realize this and they will not afford you any courtesy in light of the situation. I am restomoding a 64 Chevy c10 right now but the drive to work in it a few times before I started the tear down is what made up my mind that the steering and brake would have to be modernized. Luckily for you there are plenty of parts available at reasonable prices that can bring your truck up to safety standards. Speedway motors is just one example of a good company that supplies those parts you would need to get the job done. Here is a link to speedways page for your model truck. www.speedwaymotors.com/shop/speedway-motors-1947-54-chevy-pickup-bolt-in-series-chassis-parts~8192-2795
    Being a life long transportation mechanic and certified welder I can tell you that this series of upgrades from Speedway can be done by most mechanically inclined people. Should you decide that something like this would be something you want to do I would be happy to lend a hand sometime as I only live a few hours drive from Nashville.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there are new parts available, but I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible, and keep it original whenever possible. We will get it running safely, that's a huge priority, but it's not likely ever going to be a highway driver, more just running to get hay and go to the feed store up the street.

    Do you still have the 6volt system in your trunk? You should change it over as soon as possible. They make 12v replacement bulbs for your old marker lights and turn signals bulbs. Also convert your charging system from generator/regulator to a alternator system. You will need to change your heater blower motor and dashboard lights to 12v bulbs also. You will need a new 12v coil and resistor for your starting system. You also need to change any other electric devices and motor and solenoids.
    Good luck with your new life in Nashville.

    Woah there girl. Always disconnect the ground terminal first, not the hot (red) lead as shown. If the end of that lead had touched any metalwork under the hood as you were pulling it back it would have made a shower of sparks. Its only 12 volts you might say, but a shorted battery will make hundreds of amps and can very easily start a spectacular fire! Love your videos but we need to work safe.

    That's a smooth running straight six, reminds me of the old trucks I used to own. Running moonshine, isn't that what they do in Tennessee? If that original starter had been good you wouldn't have to change it when converting to 12V their winding can take the higher voltage. That's what an old-timer told me back in the 70's also back in the 70's a friend of mine owned a Porsche that same color green. Thanks for the video!

    Look at all that room to work by the motor. Those were the good ol days.
    Anne, your truck looks like an old Moonshine hauling vehicle. Careful not to be carrying illegal liqueur when pulled over.

    Get rid of that Air Cleaner as soon as you can. Those things will become nice and crispy when and if the truck ever backfires. Not only that but as the element ages, it also crumbles and gets sucked into the manifold.

    Those Chevy truck the 1950s starters had no solenoid. The driver would have to step on a round pedal, located to the right of the accelerator to start.

    My across the road neighbors have a wooden rail fence like you do on your new farm and they put wire fencing on the fence to keep their small dogs from getting out on the road.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great way to do it. Unfortunately Rigby is smarter than most fences which is why we are training him to stay put so we don't have to worry about him. He's got PLENNNNTY of space to run around freely inside it :)

    Hi Anne you really are clever I don't think I would have a go at replacing a starter motor in a truck. I have a club cart electric golf cart be I use it to play golf during the summer I walk in the winter. I have played golf ever since I was 17,I love golf. Your golf cart is an EZI GO they can have their shear of electrical problems.

    I got to ask you - did you bring that big band saw with you when you moved? Was always hoping to see you rejuvenate that massive piece of cast iron. Glad to see you and your truck reunited again. I was looking at the front grill when you fired it up, and it might just be me, but I think I saw that truck smile.

    Anne - Kia ora (hello from NZ) Yep who needs gloves, when a bit of good ol' grease, oil and dirt under your fingernails is really good for the skin... :-) I hate wearing gloves when working on my motorbike, just love the grease and oil and then only wear fingerless gloves when out riding the motorbike all year round too. One has to 'feel' what they are doing. :-) Oh and good job getting the Chevy going again..... sounds awesome :-)

    You did quite well on that starter install, but having help is cheating. I once had to do it alone, and ended up using a dog leash (handle end) to form a lasso around the starter body, to lower and then tie off the hook end of the leash to one of the heater pipe connections at the fire wall, so that I could get under and do the final positioning and bolt insertion. Getting the original out was easy. It fell out after I removed the bolts. Holding the new (heavy) starter at just the right height required a sky hook, but the leash was all that I had.
