    Me and my father sell our own wooden flags and give the money to our local veterans group. This video helped us get started.
    Just found out recently that my 95 year old neighbor across the street is a WW2 and Korean War veteran. We're thinking of making him a special one.

    Thanks for the tutorial.
    I’ve seen a couple of these made by a local guy but he didn’t sand them to well before hand and the edges were very splintery.
    He also just spray painted or stained the stars from a pattern instead of carving them.
    It seems the carving gave them a much better look with depth.
    I made a few similar items and instead of spraying a final poly coat I
    Like to use the same Varathane stain in a matte crystal clear which gives it a beautiful shiny matte sheen, gorgeous for furniture finish work.
    You an also steel wool and add as many coats as possible to make it look like an absolute stunning piece with a super smooth finish with a deep shine, furniture grade.
    Yes this takes a lot more extra time and effort and if not making one for yourself you’ll have to charge accordingly unless you’re like me and enjoy making them as gifts for friends and relatives.

    Like your videos and the fact that you don't have a 40 x 40 shop full of Grizzly tools. I do weekend wood work and don't have $50,000 worth of tools like some of the people on youtube. Had problems with burning. Harder to get the "toast" color then I thought. I did have some burnt spots but that is ok, it was the over all darkening of the wood that I was looking for. I want to build several of these for Christmas presents so I figure I should get it right eventually. About the stain, my colors do not seem as bright as they do on all the videos out there. I used the scarlet, and blue that you recommended but I also used a whitewash color stain as I was looking for a white (ish) rather then a bare wood tone. I applied a color, waited a few minutes, wiped it off, let it dry, and then reapplied another coat. I watched several vids (again) and realized that no one was wiping off the boards between coats as they would do for a cherry or oak stain. Are you wiping off the stain between coats and just not showing it? I am afraid that not all the stain will soak in and I will be left with places that are permanently tacky. Also, is there a trick to not spreading the stain where it doesn't need to be. The back of your flag seemed pretty clean but I have places all over the back where I "contaminated" it when I was staining the front of the boards.

    • @MaxF01
      @MaxF01  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much! Haha yea for now i just got my corner in the garage 😂 youll definitely get the hang of it the more you do it. For my staining i just rub it in with a rag without wiping off the excess, which their usually isnt any because i spread it until there's no excess. But i also do a couple coats to get it darker and on my recent flags i have done 3 coats of my blue and red to get the color and darkness that i like. And when im applying it i usually just try my best to keep one hand clean and then use that one to handle the wood and use the other to handle the stain and do my best to keep the stain under control. Good luck to you man i hope you can get it figured out 👍🏼 the more projects you make and the more you mess around with staining and torching youll definitely get a feel for it

      @@MaxF01 All of my tools and benches are on wheels or have a handle so I can move things out of the way to work on my F250. My first few stars looked as it I was trying to carve them out but once I concentrated on just removing the color they came out much smoother. I emailed That Flag Company about the stain and they said the same thing that you did. Don't wipe the stain off once applied and add a second coat after the first is dry. I have made some mistakes but I am finishing this flag and will hang it on my garage wall to remember where I started. Not doing them for money but as gifts to family/vets. Going to practice on the stars a little more before I start my next flag. Thanks again for the videos.

      @@MaxF01 Built two and working on my third. First one is in the garage as an example of things to avoid. Stars are a little rough, got glue on the red bars, tried to wipe it off and flag looks like I bled on it. Second was much better and and darkened as the coating dried to give a weathered look. On a future flag I may run the board through the planer to think them out a little. Might make the flag lighter (less heavy). Only two minor issues so far. My navy blue stain is really thick. It is made that way so it will not run but it takes some thought to keep it from drying before you can get some of it off or it will dry tacky. My dremel bits dull before I finish all the stars. Have to keep those stocked up. Thanks for all your help. By the way, I am working on a rustic coffee table and am considering making a flag out of hard wood, embedding it into the table, and coating the whole thing in some type of clear epoxy. I have to make three flags as gifts by christmas but if I can get the table finished I will send you a photo.

    what a great looking flag, you did a great job with the whole project easy to follow instructions, woodburning turned it into a great project. i would like some feed back on how to get the graphics you used to get it off of the computer, what program do you use, i am not savy to doing that , can you help me with that ?thanks i will be waiting for an answer. and again great job will keep following your site.

    • @MaxF01
      @MaxF01  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much!! To get the graphics off the computer i use a program called "paint". I dont know if apple computers have it but Microsoft computers usually do. Once there i will adjust the size and then print. I have been told that "rapid resizer" is another program that lets you adjust the size of graphics and then print. In a couple of my videos i show my process incase you want to see it. Hope this helps! Best of luck to you!

    Question. The cardboard used when carving. Does that help keep the dust wheel from marking up the blue wood as well as for a straight line reference? It is dual purpose?

    Max i finally was able to go to Lowes and get the paint i needed to paint the flag, thanks to you wasn't able to get navy blue but was able to get a blue color very close to navy so now i am set up to do a flag for myself. i noticed that the backer strips don't go even from top to bottom, is there a reason you do that or can i make mine go even from top to bottom, and again thanks this is a Louisiana Veteran making this American flag. the blue i got at Lowes is #43 deep ocean minwax water base it is a good match.

    • @MaxF01
      @MaxF01  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats great to hear im sure the blue you go will work out just fine! You can definitely even the backer strips out. I really hope everything works out and the flag turns out good, im sure it will! Also thank you for your service!

    • @johnklein4558
      @johnklein4558 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rouxso the color you want from Lowe’s is the water based MinWax stain in “True Blue”. It’s a proprietary color unique to Lowe’s. Also the red is “Scarlet” which matches the proper flag colors very closely. Also if you have access to a CNC you can get the stars carved out by the machine and then fill them in using stars carved out from a light colored piece of lumber.
      OR get West System epoxy and mix up a small batch with white color powdered dyes in it and you’ll use their syringes to place just the right amount into the carved out areas.
