I have built two of these now. I discovered i do NOT have the patience to carve the stars....😮 other than that the builds have gone according to the plans. Great design and plans! Thanks PatriotDIY!
You sir are a true Artist with a capital A! I can tell you don't do this just to make money. You do it for the love of the craft and a love of Country. Thanks for this excellent build and how to do it.
Very nice! I’ll be buying plans once I finish my current project. I love your technique. One question is I see you have a DEWALT angle grinder but what model is it? Thanks in advance!
I was a little confused as to what end you started on with your template. I assumed it was from left to right moving the template every inch. Flag turned out great but the waves lean to the right as you face the flag. Going to do a larger one next. Look at your video numerous times. Thanks for all the input
The stars on the finished product look “whiter” than just the natural wood showing after the carving. Are you doing something for that whiter look or is it just an optical illusion that won’t show when looking at the flag when standing back from it?
He burnt the stripes with the torch. After you stain the blue background and then carve it away with the Dremel it will be pure wood (not burnt) so they will appear more bright.
I would assume that carving the stars has to be by far the longest step in the process. I make flat ones with painted stars but this winter I am going to try my first wavy flag. The stars are the one thing I am dreading.
You could do it that way or just do both sides on the table saw and probably wouldnt notice a huge difference for a project like this....but A Jointer will help make them flat but not parallel. For 4 perfect sides you need to joint 1 face and 1 side, then plane the other face, then cut the last side on the table saw. I don't always go through that whole process but that's technically the best way to do it.
Yes downloaded this and the placement of each is not shown unless more is shown when printed but have cut three and nothing lines up so I am no better off with the plans unless I just do not see it thanks does a go to the top or bottom
Do all that sanding OUTSIDE! Ok, I did it in my shop and I'll tell ya, I had a real mess! A 4" grinder doesn't have any dust collection ! There is quite a bit of grinding to get smooth contour. Haven't started staining yet.
the stencil does not line up exactly with the flag because of the waves in the board. also that side of the flag is a little out of square, maybe 1/8" at most. How do you deal with that in lining up the stencil?
@user-ur3uv4er6y Just tape it in place the best you can and hold down with your fingers around each star while you trace them. You can see me do it at 9:55 in the video
The template thats in the plans to print off is not the same as the one you're using in the video, it's missing 3" off the left side so it wont give the exact same look as the one thats made in the video. I figured this out 3 2x4's in, no biggie but just a heads up for anyone looking to do this, this thing looks amazing after making it....watch your hands on that carbide grinder wheel!
The pattern is actually only 13in long so it doesn't really matter so much how long the template is extended...you can really start at any point on the template and you just move it down to continue the pattern. Glad you were happy with the result.

@timlinville7128 The building process would be the same but instead of staining the individual stripes the way I did here you would have to tape off each section after it's built and maybe use star decals for masking those while you satin.

Fantastic project and so well explained. I don’t know how well I would do with a Dremel, but this looks like a project I just have to do! Thanks!
Man that turned out awesome! 👍🏻 One of the best I’ve seen! Thank you for sharing!
I've just started making flags I love doing it lot of fun cant wait to try this one!
That looks badass man. Im going to give it a go.
Thank you for this! I thought it may have had a router componentbut the wave template moving and then sanding down the edges makes more sense.
Looks awesome! You put a lot of work into that flag and it shows.
Great job enjoyed watching from the uk

When laying out the A and B pieces. Do you lay them out 1A,1B, 2A, 2B, etc. or do you lay out 1-13A then do the B’s?
1-13A will make up 1 flag, 1b-13b will make a second flag

Would i use this same template for a smaller scale flag, or would the waves be too big for a smaller flag?
I use the same waves for 36 and 24 inch. Smaller than that you may want to make a different template
how long did it take to do that stars?
Couple hours for me
