Quick tip although you probably already know by now. Whatever you burn on the front, burn on the back. It will help the warping. When you burn you are draining all the moisture from that side so it will cup upward if you only burn the front. I did this on so many of my flags. Hope it helps!
Glad I watched this. I did my first set of stars looking at it from the opposite side and put them on upside down. Luckily I didn't carve it out. I'll just sand it down a bit to get rid of the pencil lines, restain, and try again. It's my first one. Thanks for the video.
One of the things that made it easier for me was a metal star stencil instead of plastic, this way I keep the metal stencil in place and use my Dremel to carve out each star with no damage to the stencil.
Had an idea on the first and easy one you did. How about drilling a bunch of little holes throughout the entire flag so that with the led lights on it goes through? I’m definitely going to do this!
Both flags look great!! Semper Fi Brother! New Sub. Retired from the Corps in 03, and I'm retiring at the end of this month for good, hopefully!! I'll be doing both these projects to fill my time between cross country RV trips!
When I made mine I used 1x2 boards. I also used a stainless steel stencil for the stars and a Dremel while the stencil was clamped in place. Much easier than the mylar.
Since still you read the comments. Stencil the stars on by dry sponging white paint and a makeup sponge. It’s a lot faster than drawing them on. I do all my flags by hand as instead of my cnc. I Like the human touch and imperfection . The stencil trick was going to be a social media hack for my instagram account, except work, parenting, and hobby building leaves little time for the social media at the moment. Nice video, definitely appreciate it from know just how much time goes into the video.
I totally agree, but if I could afford a little bit more expensive one I would go with the Saw Stop contractor saw. Not only will it help you keep all your digits, but I think it takes a dado blade, too.
Great work! Question, why didn't you just use the stencil while attached to fill in your stars? Why outline and remove the stencil? Thank you for your service.
Thanks! I didn’t want to hit the stencil with the Dremel. If I had, I wouldn’t have been able to reuse the stencil because the stars would get messed up.
I just found your channel. I really enjoyed seeing how you make flags. Everyone has their favorite way. I've been making flags for several years and started with your second way. I used a flex shaft with the Dremel and it helped a lot since it's smaller and easier to hold. But since I have arthritis in my hands, it would take almost 2 hours to carve the stars. I had to stop doing it that way and got a Cricut and make a stencil and spray paint the stars now. I really loved the hand carved look, but just couldn't do it. I still scorch the stripes. The painted stars look good even though they aren't scorched. I sell them at the local farmers market. I may try the plywood method. Looks interesting. Thank you for your service!!! Happy Fourth of July a year later! 🤩
@@patriot-maker very quick response time lol I’m usually up about 03:30 or so and watch TH-cam videos before I leave for work, I made 3 mini flag builds Max F I believe I he had a good channel.
Thanks! Let me know if you have any suggestions or would like to see anything specific. I’m on the road right now, but when I get home I’ll get back after it!
I wonder why you did not spray a clear coat over the stars on the first flag ? I loved this video and I have the skills to make these and I will. Thank You.
I know Im a few months late to this video, but I like what I see. Im just getting my wood shop up and running out of my garage. I have all the necessary tools and saws, but Im having a hard time deciding on what direction I want to go with flags. Tonight after watching this video and others, I think I have a direction Im going to use combining some of your ideas, along with others. Once Im finished I think itll come out great, but Ill have to see how its received by an audience of my peers. GM3 (SW) James Ducat USN 2000/2004
The plywood version will hardly ever stay flat because of climate change, the same is true with the individual stripe version, the new lumber will warp, to prevent most of this I glue and nail every strip together and use 4 backer boards.
That's a great question, and I'm not sure why that is, but that's exactly what I did for my American flag home plate video. But that was a smaller flag, so maybe that's why.

That actually makes sense now that I think about it. Thanks

You’re welcome! I have definitely put stars on upside down before! LOL.
Have you tried sandblasting the stars using a stainless steel stencil?
No but that sounds AWESOME! I wish I had the equipment to do that!
we like the one on the right the best!
Thanks!
One of the things that made it easier for me was a metal star stencil instead of plastic, this way I keep the metal stencil in place and use my Dremel to carve out each star with no damage to the stencil.
I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks!
Beautiful work! I’ve made my share of these…it’s some work but each one I make has different character than the other one…
Thanks! I agree.

That sounds awesome! Great idea!
@@patriot-maker you have to do video cause I’m dying to see what it looks like now!💪🇺🇸
Very beautiful
Thanks!
Nice to see people learning while making the flags. Dremel makes a little torch that is useful for burning the stars. Runs on butane. 👍
Great recommendation! Thanks!

Semper Fi! Thanks for your service! How exciting to be in double retirement! RV’ing and woodworking sounds like an awesome retirement!!
@@patriot-maker Thanks for your service Brother!!
These are really great!!! Like the idea of the outlet too!
Thanks!
Was a little stressed out with carving the stars. Thanks for this
It was super stressful the first time for me, too!
do some then come back and do some more.
When I made mine I used 1x2 boards. I also used a stainless steel stencil for the stars and a Dremel while the stencil was clamped in place. Much easier than the mylar.
Good tips!
Great, informative video! I still can't decide which one I like best. They are both outstanding! (love your tshirt too)!
Thanks!

Thanks! Great tip about the sponge!
They both are great so if would be hard to decide which one. I think one could go either way just fine depending on the application or the customer

I loved this. Thank you for sharing. I am trying the harder one today 🙏 I knew you were military before you said it. Hooah! I'm an Army veteran .

Thanks! I’m with you - using a Dremel for the stars takes forever and not worth it if you’re selling them. Happy 4th of July!
Looks amazing I like the one on the right
Thanks!
I li no e both but doing the second but how long did you cut the 1 1/2 inch strips
The long ones are 37" and the short ones are 22". The full plans are linked in the description.
Great build, also great choice of movies, also thank you for your service
Haha. Thanks!

Great video!
Was the stain that you purchased, solid or semi transparent?
Thanks! It’s a semi-transparent wood finish. Lowe’s item #1658611.
Great Video and Information. Flags look Awesome!
Thanks!
well done! Thank you for your service.
Thank you very much!
Good work great video
Thanks!
Hi. What kind of wood did you use? My burns are terrible
I just use white wood boards from Lowe’s (item #940)
I love that stain white stripes!! What brand and color name white is it??
Thanks! It’s Minwax wood finish, semi-transparent color stain, pure white. I got mine at Lowe’s (item #1658611).
Once you drawn your lines. Go over the lines with a dermal, 1/8th in deep. Takes 15 mins to do an looks better
Ok, thanks!
You didn’t mention what you thought about the middle piece of wood on the back. You said you would talk about it later
What are the name of the stains?
Navy Blue, Crimson, and white
Thank you

I think I did spray clear coat over it all after I did the stars. I must not have recorded that. Happy building!
@@patriot-maker Thanks for your reply
Nice
Thanks!
What size are the stripes
1.5”x37”
I've watched a few videos of making flags. Seems there's no one technique that fits everyone's fancy of how to. I like the first one you did best.
Thanks! That’s the beauty of woodworking - there’s many ways to do something.
Great job, love the patriot theme!
Thanks!!

Thanks for the tips! I kept one of each so I’ll keep an eye on them.
I notice that most flag videos also don’t do the union as one separate rectangle. Out of curiosity why is this?
That's a great question, and I'm not sure why that is, but that's exactly what I did for my American flag home plate video. But that was a smaller flag, so maybe that's why.
Maybe use propane instead of map gas. Map burns hotter ( huge difference in price also) propane $3 to map $10
Great idea, thanks!

Thank you for your service!
I want to make one with maple and walnut (no burning) with inlay stars. I have not figured it out yet but way harder than this.
Good luck!

nice work
Thanks!
All that work and you spray paint the stars on? That’s disappointing
Well, I certainly wasn’t going to Dremel them out again! That was brutal and tedious!
