Try clamping the wood pieces together with out gluing. Then carve while clamped. Paint or stain individual slats. Then glue together. Reduces taping time and messy paint/stain bleed
As always, great job Max. Wavy flags are one of the hardest to do. You make it look easy. The edges puts the flag a step higher than others I've seen. Great touch. Your shading with the torch added a great touch as well. Something that works for me to keep mistakes and paint bleed to a minimum: When you have the first stripes taped (in this you taped the white first), after you stained the red stripes and it dries, you can spray on one or two light coats of seal. Once that dries, change up the taping (take off the tape on the white stripes, put tape on red strips) then stain the white stripes. If any stain bleeds, it shouldn't stain over the red before you can wipe it off (seal coat should stop the stain). This method works even better for staining stars. Blue stain for union, one or two coats of seal, then carve out the stars. Start staining stars white. Any white that gets on the blue cleans up quick and easy with a wipe of a rag.
Nice job ! People don't realize just how much time and work goes into something like this, I've been a carpenter and wood worker since 1971, sale price for this should be in the at least $75-$120 dollar range, good craftsmanship there young man. 👍
At a minimum. This takes a long time. 1 per day? $30 in wood, glue, stain, sealer, saw blade wear and tear, electricity, tape etc. so unless you're cool with $10/hr. At least $200. Plus, it takes time to get this good
This wood flag technique is the best I have ever seen! I believe I have watched some of your other videos. This is definitely the one I want to try and make. Thanks for including every detail and method to create this. You answered every question I could think of. Well done video! Most of all, thanks for sharing! 👏🇺🇸👏🇺🇸
I'm excited to build this flag. I have my boards cut down to one inch. Had a mishap with blade that's stopping me a little bit. You do make it look easy. Handcarving the stars will be a challenge Thanks for your posts.
I've seen a lot of these done. Finally, someone does it in my opinion correctly.. flags are thin, so i like how you did the edges to make it look thin..
Very nice work, i will try it on my own next vecation. 👍 You should panit/stain the back sides on the edges too, that would make a perfekt look. For the glueing proces use baking paper as table cover. The most wood glues dont stick to it and you can often reuse the paper, because the glue will fall of, if it is totaly dry. Just do a dry run befor using a new gluetye for the first time. Keep on the good work!
Yes Sir, Im 69 yrs with lots of woodworking experience. Always looking for faster ways to create worthful and meaningful Americana crafts. Thank you for sharing the ways that you have learned by trial and era that will give most of us the opportunity to create an almost unflawed art piece the first go around. In wish that i could make the stars go faster. However, I must be dilegent and consider the soldiers who have given their all for this flag. thank you,
Great job! Only thing I would have done different would be to use a sanding flap disk on my grinder to smooth most of it before I used a palm sander. but the flag looks great. Just curious, What kind of price would you ask for a flag like that?
Thanks a lot man! I dont sell them. I have thought about selling them many times but the pricing would be difficult since they are so time consuming to make

great video as always, i made your mini flag build and use it when we go camping as our site sign ive made 3 in total i gifted 2 of them both to veterans and they were really appreciative of it thanks again for sharing your knowledge and talent
I've done pretty good selling flags over the past few years. I did a thin edge one like this a few years ago. I always considered it my flag cause it took 3 years to sell. I had it listed for 100 more than my normal flags. A few friends told me it was cool but not necessarily worth the extra money. Now that it's gone I miss it cause I really liked it.
@@MaxF01 It absolutely did and was actually very simple to do! An amazing gift for a family member. They loved it. Thanks & keep it up! Looking forward to trying others.
Again, nice work. Quick question: have you used blue tape instead of frog tape? I seem to be getting a little more bleed with the blue stuff, and am wondering if I should try Frog.
Gorgeous work. How long did it take you? Does staining the stripe section all white, then taping only once for the red work? For the stencil, you can use a spray photo fixative to apply it. The spray doesn't leave residue and you can reuse the stencil. You could then mark around it and spray the Stars white. Leave it like that or carve out. You save time not having to trace. Excellent, creating work. The edges really do lift it to another level
Hola Max, es un gusto ver un trabajo tan bien hecho, se agradece tu esfuerzo por mostrarnos paso a paso como elaboraste esa bonita bandera. Saludos desde el norte de México.
Think this is my favorite flag you have done. That grinding disc while putting out a ton of dust really works well. I'm with you on using the frog tape on these, I don't have a lot of issues with it bleeding the stain like the blue tape does.
Very nice I might have to try this. I bet you can also carve those waves in with the table saw. You would need to make a little jig to hold it at the angle to ride against the fence. Then you clamp a strait edge (Make shift fence) at a 30 to 45 degree angle of the table saw blade. You raise the blade a 3/16 to 1/4 in above the table of saw and push the wood across the blade. You are basically using the saw blade as a large shaper. Then just raise the blade a bit more and make another pass. It sounds way more dangerous than it is. LOL Izzy swan ha a few videos on it and one he even makes a really nice jig that is far more advance than I am describing. But I have done it myself several times for projects that need coves. My dad was a wood worker cabinet maker and he shown me this trick 30 plus years ago. Izzy just took it to the next level. But you might play with it a little maybe it will work. Link below for Izzy's video. But really nice work. I have made a lot of nice things with 2x4's. It is cheap lumber. You just need to be a bit picky when buying them. th-cam.com/video/hQI-yP3RpBg/w-d-xo.html
Nice job, but a quick question, could you have used some type of contact paper with the stars cut out? Then you could have dabbed white paint on for each of the stars. Maybe easier than grinding them out with the Dremel tool.

Hint I saw on another video. If you have a couple of bleeds, torch them darker and they "disappear"...

Beautiful......I think I would have just sprayed the stars white.
GREAT JOB. looks great.
That is a cool flag. Nice work. I don't have the patience for doing those stars like you did. I'd have just painted them.
