Regardless of the actual phone, ThinkPhone is a great name, and Lenovo/Motorola should use their Laptop name schemes for most phones. They can make a ThinkPhone (Light/Pro/Ultra) for flagship. IdeaPhone for budget-midrange. And maybe YogaPhone for flip/fold phones.

@@intensifies3362 I'm not saying that they don't have names currently, but I'm stating that consistent names with their laptop business would help brand recognition. Especially since Motorola was pretty dead over the last 8+ years, and current product names seem rarely recognizable and, let's be honest, names like Edge and Razr sound like something edgy early 2000s teens would come up with.

I have this phone and it receives stable security patches every month. I don't use it for business nor did I pay full retail price. It's a solid device for someone that doesn't need a lot of extras but likes security. I've enjoyed using it.

@Oldasianguy I picked it up for $199 after trade in. Considered buying one last year but went with Razr Plus instead. I liked the Razr but the screen protector issues became a bit much for me to be concerned with.
Plus, I like having consistent security updates and so far the Thinkphone has been every month.

    1. Motorola ThinkPhone is a high-end phone inspired by Lenovo's ThinkPad laptops.
    2. Targeted towards business crowd with extra security and durability features.
    3. Aramid fiber back for extra durability and IP68 rating for water and dust protection.
    4. 6.6-inch POLED display with 1080p resolution and fast 144Hz refresh rate.
    5. Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support and an under-display fingerprint reader.
    6. Powered by a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset and has a large 5,000 mAh battery.
    7. Triple-camera setup on the back with a 50MP main camera and 32MP front-facing camera.
    8. Has extra security features like Think Shield and Moto Threat Defense.
    9. Clean software experience with near-stock Android 13 and Moto features.
    10. Main camera photos have good detail and colors, but finer details are soft.
    11. Ultra-wide camera photos are decent, with good dynamic range and autofocus.
    12. Front-facing camera has good detail and colors.
    13. Videos in 4K are decent, but 8K footage is soft and muted.
    14. A hardware button can launch apps, but is difficult to use with one hand.
    15. Good alternative options include the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus and OnePlus 11.

I got my Thinkphone in January and love it. Batterytime is great, 1 1/2 day runtime is great and it´s finally a flagship with a flat display and no curved sh.... anymore. Camera is ok, not on par with a Galaxy s23 oder 22 but its ok for the usual snapshots. For me its awesome, the only thing problematic are the accessories. No many cases or accessories available. Overall for me a great device.
So after 5 month I sold my Thinkphone and here is why. The device itself is great, battery life and overall performance spot on but Motorola never managed to fix the stuttering issue for the first seconds when recording video, no matter if 1080p or 2160p . Pictures at daylight are great but as soon as it gets darker the quality goes down the drain. Main problem with the phone is the accessory situation which is basically non existent. Yo do not get any decent case from one of the big names. Spigen; UAG, Supcase and others, NON of them have any accessories available so you are stuck with the useless case that comes with the phone (Kudos to Motorola because they replaced it twice.) because the edges break or you buy a 3€ clear case from Aliexpress because this is the only wothy one. There is also no decent screen protection available. Yes you can get some cheap glas on Amazon but they are worthless so save your bucks and buy yourself a beer. I would have loved to keep it but without any accessory that allows me to protect the device for a long run you either treat it like a raw egg or you get a phone with good support for accessories. A 150€ Samsung phone gets more support than a 999€ Motorola Phone, let that sink in.

This review (along with Lenovo/Motorola) should have highlighted the Ready For desktop mode much more. Being able to use the ThinkPhone *instead of* a laptop is very appealing. Instead of issuing and managing a bunch of laptops, just issue the phone and have USB-C hot desk setups to plug in and go. One device to rule them all. Ready For is better than Samsung DeX at this point, but Motorola is even worse than Samsung at promoting it.

I would upgrade from my Oneplus 7T but my main skepticism is the cameras and promised updates. Even at the sale price of $400 I still cant justify something that realistically is only an upgrade in storage and processor. My 7T still works perfectly fine speedwise aside from some quirks, some of which are just Android related and not the phone at all (annoyances with Google phone and messenger apps).
While tempting, im going to stick with my 7T in hopes the S24 blows me away or something comes out like this Thinkphone with better cameras and software updates.

Again, a phone with no headphone jack and no SD card slot is just useless especially on a flagship. Flagships should be the ultimate maximum experience on a product line.

Yet not a word about the telephone or Wi-Fi reception. I remember how the original Moto X was praised as one of the five best mobile telephones of the year for LTE connection that beat Apple "by a country mile." Of course, not a word about its spotty 3G connectivity. My old 2020 Moto G could keep a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection farther than the latest Apple could keep 2.4 GHz. Neither Lenovo nor anyone else bothered to test for that, either.
It's a mobile radio. Test for radio connectivity, will ya?

Why do manufacturers keep adding useless dedicated buttons but can't seem to add a two stage camera button on the top right hand side (landscape)? The camera is one of the main reasons people upgrade phones. Some of us hate tapping at a screen and most people would enjoy it if they had the option to use a physical button.

Honestly it is way to expensive for what it is. Think Lenovo & Motorola has overestimated the brand cache for its ThinkPad lineup.

If you buy a Motorola. You will go through the following phases:
1st stage: slightly disappointed as it does not meet expectations
2nd stage: you discover bugs and stability issues. Lots of them. Even on the flagships.
3rd stage: you start to console yourself that your purchase is good. An update will come to solve the issues.
4th stage: you realise the updates are not coming.
5th stage: you become terribly annoyed and angry
6th stage: you orchestrate a revolt against the customer care and bombard the Motorola forum with complaints
7th stage: you realise no amount of complaining will solve the issue.
8th stage: you realise you got scammed
9th stage: you advocate against the purchase of Motorola phones on TH-cam videos

Never had an issue with my Moto G Power. Dad never an issue with his Razr. Mum with what ever Moto phone she chose.
My phone spends much of the day in hog bars... An environment so caustic we have to gut the interiors every five years due to corrosion. And the phone works just fine.

These can be had brand new for under 400 USD for a while now. At that price, it's a really solid phone, especially in 2024 where something like the Samsung A35 is 400 dollars brand new.

  • @ThEMarD

Heyyo, I feel they missed an opportunity here by not illuminating the red i in ThinkPhone like they do on their ThinkPad devices heh...
It does look like a decent device... But for the price does it still only get 2 years of OS updates and 4 years of security patches? That seems pretty weak these days, especially for a "business" phone where software updates and especially security patches are more important.
Well I checked the Motorola website and it doesn't mention how many years of software upgrades only security patches...
    Currently receiving monthly security updates.
    Device launched on January, 2023
Security updates will stop on January, 2027
    Launched On: Android 13
    Next OS: Android 14
*This device will receive at least bi-monthly SMRs updates
Please note: Channels and regions may have different launch dates and support cycle may vary.
