I remember my days in highschool when the Moto G 2013 came out, what a beast for its time. The low to mid range smartphones from that era were so bad and this Moto G was solid. Now it's safe to say that low to mid range smartphones have improved a lot and are more than usable

I've always been pretty happy with them for the money, I recently spent a little more for a Pixel 6a, it's nice to have a snappy phone for once, my cheap Motos have never been very fast. And the Pixel camera is light years ahead of the Motos.
The last phones I owned which were in midrange territory was the Moto Z Play and Z2 Play. Usually had the style shell with wireless charging on them or the battery mod that also had such and thing was a literal 3 day phone for me with even medium to heavy use.
After I broker my Nexus 5 screen for two times in a row, I cannot afford any new screen so I sold the motherboard and bought a Moto G. Camera apart, I loved that phone and had a great screen, great battery life and was snappy almost all the time. Such a beast, I've got friends that still thanks me for suggesting Motorola.
The first moto G came out when Moto was owned by Google. Don't compare that with the Lenovo owned Moto of today, today's motorolas have declined in quality and don't get any SW updates, they're way inferior compared to the motorola back in the day

After having flagship phones since the dawn of the smartphone, I was short on cash for a new one, about a month back, and pulled the trigger on the cheapest price to quality ratio phone I could find - €99, Moto G04 here, in Europe (apparently G Play in US). I must say, smartphones have come long way. Qudos to Motorola for this cheap and cheerful gem. I'm tired of the backpanel glass phones, don't see the point; most people opt for putting a rubber or flipcase around to protect them anyway, so why bother... My Galaxy S8 is a shattered glass of its former self.
My techno pova 5 was 149 usd as well, but 120 hz, 6000 mah, 256 gb of storage and 2 cameras: 50 and 2 megapixels. Been using it for 2 years and it is still pretty good for a budget phone.
It has expendable storage and a jack too, pretty good phone. I'd even say perfect, as long as you don't mind the picture quality and don't play heavy-duty mobile games.
Quit dissing on headphone jacks. I, for one, L O V E the fact that my Apple earbuds I purchased in 2015 are STILL GOING STRONG. NO audio degradation in either ear. NO batteries to die/fail on me. NO worrying about dropped wireless connection from some stupid air wave interference. Just good ol headphone wires.
You know I used to think that way... But God damn it when that cord gets snagged on something and tugs the fuck out of your ear I get pissed off. Over-ear wireless headphones you feel so free. And I'm an audiophile and mix music. The bt quality suffices on a good pair and when out n about
I was sold with the headphones jack. Buying one. Really don't need anything but texting, calling, and the ability to be my iPod. I dont do any of the social stuff. Makes me stress out and gives me headaches.
I actually really miss having phones with plastic backs, I never worried about dropping those phones and cracking the back glass... Also they were WAY lighter.
Me too. And honestly some of the plastics on even some flagship phones like the pixel 7 pro... When they use that thick quality plastic, I actually prefer the look and feel of it over a glossy back. But of course all plastic is not the same and this Moto g play definitely feels like a bit cheaper... But I use a case anyway. I digress, I agree the glass back is not worth the crack risk
The reason Google pixels are so good is because when they bought Motorola, they took all the resources and copy them when they bought them out and then sold them.
Finally, Moto - if you can cover things like their Edge line (in the mid market range, a common competitor for Samsung and such in other countries) I'll be super stoked, would help a bunch!
I dont understand why companies don't use plastic on the back... almost all phones with glass backs have "frost finishes" which you can literally do with plastic. Not only is plastic cheaper, but it also absorbs impact with the floor better than glass. Frames should stay metal but just put plastic on the back.
I cannot tell you how pleased I am to see a phone with a plastic case and a headphone jack. If the processor isn't garbage, I'll pick one up. I just wish it didn't have a camera bump.

This satisfies me so much to hear. I've been on the front lines of this war for the last 15 years. Welcome to the master race. But yeah I just switched from a pixel 7 to this because my pixel broke. The only thing I really miss is the NFC feature. The front facing camera isn't great but the rear camera is solid. Obviously not as good as a folds camera or a pixel camera. But it's extremely good like no one even notices a difference unless they're looking for it. I miss a few small minor features like NFC. And I guess if you use a lot of tasks and heavy processing apps maybe it won't suffice. But I don't really do that I don't really think many people do stuff like that on their phones, and honestly the performance is not even noticeably different from my pixel. It's maybe 90% as good as my pixel I'm like 15% of the cost. So much diminishing returns on expensive phones.
@@mediocreman2yeah it's average and it's a cheap bottom of the barrel phone in terms of price point. So it's actually a really great camera for 150 bucks like I'm extremely surprised at its quality. The front facing camera is definitely lacking but the rear camera is great.

I remember my days in highschool when the Moto G 2013 came out, what a beast for its time. The low to mid range smartphones from that era were so bad and this Moto G was solid. Now it's safe to say that low to mid range smartphones have improved a lot and are more than usable
I've only ever had Moto smartphones, the OG Droid, Droid X2, Moto X, X4, and a G power.

More like these please! Love to see Budget phones give flagships a run for their MONEY!!
I am so happy you use the word "hypothesis" correctly. Too many people say theory when it is just a hypothesis.
Hypothetically, you are correct in theory.
