    Thanks for the warning as I was close to buying the wrong pair. Actually both these headsets offer passive ear protection (noise reduction) and thus they do this similarly with or without batteries. Both might be improved with more inside padding (see another shooter's YT on this) and adjusting how you wear them. The marketing implies that there's magic going on but neither pair is noise cancelling if such a thing exists in this arena. The damage to hearing discussed is exaggerated in that the amplification in these headsets isn't going to hit say, 180dB.

    Thanks for the video. Just found a pair at Goodwill lying next to a toaster oven and an old clock radio. Must've been my lucky day, because they actually turned out to be the real McCoy!

    Excellent info. Also I'm curious of the embossed headband ,wether it says the sane thing as the true pair. It's also easy to notice that the windscreen on the mic is recessed and the knock off isn't. Great video. Thanks.

      @rjstewart  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The "leather" on the band doesn't look as nice but it is embossed and looks about the same as the real ones. Same writing and face like symbol.

    You posted this on Amazon too didn't you? I do the same thing. I appreciate the information.
    Edit: I'm curious since this video is now 5 years old of Chinesium manufacturing now has copied these details. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths Chinese companies will go to knock off products. Especially ones that aren't even that expensive. A $40 pair of ear protection is being knocked off... insane.

    • @dangerous8333
      @dangerous8333 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chinesium is Chinese metal. That word only applies to something that's made with Chinese metal.
      They actually don't go through great lengths to counterfeit stuff. This stuff is coming from the same factory, it just goes out the back door with cheaper materials and different internals.
      The cheaper products that sell the most are the exact products they want to counterfeit. People that buy really expensive products are going to be more aware of issues with that product. People that buy cheaper products might not notice.
      Not really Insanity at all. They know exactly what they're doing.

    The weird thing is with your Real Pair, is the battery compartment is still Different to mine that i purchased from my military base.
    The Copper Leaf Springs are smaller in mine, and the sticker is much different. The headband is also glossier on yours and the overall material looks a bit shinier in appearance than mine.
    The one on the right is yes a dead give away it is fake. The color, the battery tray and sticker. Pretty sure the fake one didn’t come with a manual either.
    Edit: yes after checking and etc, Amazon are still selling the FAKE ONES, ALBEIT Better Quality FAKES

  • @silverstar4289

    I have the legit ones but the decibel shutout doesn’t work. Learned the hard way. Also not sure what the jack is for. I plugged in my cell phone for mowing thinking it would shut off the outside sound to listen to music. Nope.
    I still use them on the range but just have the sound on for listening to instructions and conversation

    • @rjstewart
      @rjstewart  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brad Swain if they aren't working I'd send them back or at least call the manufacturer. A quick call might get you a new pair for free!
      The headphone jack was a disappointment for me too. The problem with it is there is only one volume control. When I tried to use them to mow the lawn the lawn mower sound went up when I tried to turn the music up and turning the volume down turns off the music!
      I was hoping that plugging something in would disable the microphones and let me listen to tunes. :-(

    Would me mighty nice, if you could open them and compare the insides.. Its not hard to open them. At the end, only critical difference that you managed to notice (and not prove!) is the different plastic used. At least, visually inspect circuit board if its the same. If Chinese only took savings on "leather" and a button, then its not really that bad..

    JeeZ My question is obviously, putting one pair on after the other, what difference was there in what your gun sounded like? If you get all wound up, just purchase the much cheaper Caldwell Electronic Muffs. Caldwells all have a red status L.E.D. which lights up when they are on. I have one pair of each, and the Leights are only very marginally better. This recall is only a C.Y.A. move by that company's lawyers. Both Leights and Caldwells can be wore backwards, so you can hear what's going on behind you. There won't be any warranties on the fakes, but I bet you will be stuck for shipping them back. I noted that they aren't offering a genuine pair of Leights, in trade for the knock offs. So its just a lawyers' thing.

    • @rjstewart
      @rjstewart  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Koenig So comparing them the fakes seem half as effective (subjective of course). My real concern is the electronics being substandard and cutting off at too high a volume or worse, failing to cut off at all!!!!

    • @rjstewart
      @rjstewart  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Koenig Amazon provided a full refund with no requirement to return the fakes.

    Under $50 on Amazon or Ebay... FAKE!

    • @rjstewart
      @rjstewart  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely right, price could be a red flag! That said, I've seen them on sale for $50 and based on the seller being very reputable I'm sure they weren't fake.

  • @RJudd42
    @RJudd42 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I thought for sure mine were fake because they don't work worth shit, but I guess they are real. How do these have such high praise? Shooting my AR with these seriously hurts my ears. I paid $15 at an indoor range yesterday and left within 5 minutes because I just couldn't take the noise from my glock 43 indoors.

    • @rjstewart
      @rjstewart  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Toadvine42 it does not matter which ear defenders I have used, you need to double up with foam earplugs if you are shooting at an indoor range. Outdoor I do find problems with other people shooting near me whose gunfire is not quite loud enough to trip the cutoff circuit. In that case I just turn the volume down.

    • @RJudd42
      @RJudd42 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree it's smart doubling up hearing protection inside or outside and it's definitely something I should be doing more. But I've been shooting since I was a little kid and never had a problem with any earmuffs as standalone until I bought these. I wonder if maybe there are multiple variations of fakesor I just have a lemon set as mine plain and simple aren't functional as hearing protection.

    • @RJudd42
      @RJudd42 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hyperborean Arms I gave up on these and bought some 3M Peltor 27db. Half the price, waaaaaay more comfortable, can use them with sunglasses and most importantly they actually block out sound. Howard Leight are garbage, I've used 3 different pairs now and I guarantee at least one of them was genuine, if not all.

    • @AhuizotlXiuh
      @AhuizotlXiuh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should always double up but I have my own anecdote. Indoor I agree it's overwhelming. When I went hunting they were perfectly adequate though. Outdoors you don't have the sounds reverberating back.
      Also you should upgrade the pads to gel like Noisefighters. And while you have them open stick in some more foam to insulate them more. Those two things greatly reduced the perceived sound but I haven't tested them at the range yet.

      @@TheRotorhound well they do make the aftermarket gel pads for them that extend out further than factory ones 🤷🏼‍♂️ I hear they seal better and are way more comfortable

    • @TheRotorhound
      @TheRotorhound หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TTime685 I recommend you try before you buy or make sure the seller will refund if they don’t work for you. You get no sound protection unless you can get a good seal. I bought on reviews and didn’t think I would have a problem. At the time Honeywell owned the company, They replaced the unit and it still didn’t work. I strictly use passive protection but might try Peltor.
