    This video was without a doubt the most informative, honest, easy to understand, of any video I’ve ever listen to. Great review. I guess I have 2 of the worse and now I know I'm not imagining things on the HL Impact Sports. • @AleksanderOdessit
      @AleksanderOdessit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the gel pads will help, any earmuffs that have increased function will at minimum function better with a better "seal" around your ear, which should minimize the risk of damaging your ear drums, which is the most important function of this equipment.

      Thanks for the kind words James! I realized after my original pair died (when all of this shopping started) that you really do need 2 pairs, because if one dies on you, it dampens a range trip real quickly.

However, they may have been recently discontinued :(
      The construction felt more robust and the headband was miles ahead of the Sport Tactical 300's. The latter's headband was actually painful on the very top on my head, despite the cutout for a ballcap's top button thing. BTW Magpul makes some no-button ballcaps!

      There are objective and subjective parts to this question that make it tougher to answer. 1. Any headphones that have a larger sound amplification range risk either a. amplifying the wrong sounds b. filtering out too much.
      Also, depends on your ears, if you've had any previous hearing loss, etc.
      Are you looking for voice amplification? sound boost like leaves, trees, animals for hunting? A few of the headphones specialize with different "modes" particularly for that. I generally leave mine on the generic "boost" mode which just makes stuff louder, but thats typically for range shooting.

      Hi Dan, it looks like Amazon combined the walker xcel 500 and 100 into one product page.
      The link that no longer works (the xcel 100) is available here: www.amazon.com/dp/B07C62NQFP/ref=twister_B07NHCHHYX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
      its the "without bluetooth" option.
      I have not tried any newer ones, because I settled on keeping a pair of the Xcel 500's for myself, with the xcel 100's as my backup or secondary pair for shooters I bring with me. The others I gave away as gifts to newer shooters.
      If you're looking for "best" quality, within the $300 price point, all my professional instructor friends swear by MSA sordin. Most casual shooters or beginners I know are not willing to spend that much so I stayed away from that price point for my review.

    I have the Peltor 100 earmuffs that I use the most at the indoor range and am quite happy with them. They don't have the hard unpadded head band like the 300/500's plus were half the price. Only thing I am gonna do is replace the ear pads with the gel muffs. I also don't care for the way the wires from the headband attach to the ear pieces. The plastic connectors pop off from time to time. They pop right back on but it's annoying when it happens. I also have a pair of the walker's razors but I agree that the sound quality really sucks. I put the gels on my Walkers, and I have to admit the gels really do make a difference. As far as headphones with walkie talkie and Bluetooth attachments, that all means nothing to me. I go to shoot and maybe a talk a bit with others on the range but I don't need the fancy stuff like that! Nice informative vid. thx

    My Xcel 100 only has two microphones. One on each ear is fake. Walkers website for the Xcel 500 also says it has only two microphones instead of four. Do you know why this is? Did they change the design or something? I bought my Xcel over a year ago and very clearly only has two microphones.

    • @AleksanderOdessit
      @AleksanderOdessit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont think they changed the design, Im willing to bet the website description was changed because it was incorrect previously. Also...I can tell you first hand from calling the company to verify info, they had previously told customers that the 500's had 4 mics as well. I dont believe any design was changed, just incorrect marketing that was cascaded down until more customers started complaining about it being inaccurate. I also got new and old stock of the xcel 500's (previously in a white cardboard box - now sold in traditional clear plastic packaging) and both were identical, no generational changes, just changes in packing.)

    Hey there, I've been trying to figure out which would be the best ones for me to get, I have a pair of Impact sport, But I can't listen to music with them cause I lost the Aux when we moved, Plus I want something with a little bit more sound reduction, And it needs to be Bluetooth, I'll mainly be using these for walking my dog, shooting indoor and out, And listening to music. One thing I hated about the Impact sport, is you couldn't control the music and outside audio separately.
    Which would you recommend?

    • @AleksanderOdessit
      @AleksanderOdessit  ปีที่แล้ว

      A few of them offer bluebooth but I dont know that they'll be as good as any real pair of music headphones, keep in mind these are built for noise protection first and sound second. I believe the peltors and the xcel 500's were the best for sound quality when using bluetooth when I tested them, but the original howard leights also come with an aux port, so you have a lot of options depending on how you want to listen to music.

    Which muff features the best directional sound for telling which way a sound is coming from? In a home defense situation I want amplified, clear sound, but if a window breaks, or a floorboard creaks I want to know from which direction it's coming from. Which in your opinion is best for that. Also, the Walker XCEL 100/500...do they get in the way if using a rifle? Thanks.

    • @AleksanderOdessit
      @AleksanderOdessit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mike thanks for asking. Depends on your budget. Honestly once you get into the directional sound enabled ones, they're all decent. I think the Howard Leight Impact pros likely have the best pickup mics, with the peltor sport as a close second. Howard Leight has the least static background noise of all of them, and highest gain, which would be ideal for your described scenario..but I dont imagine ever having muffs on in the middle of the night if someone breaks in. I'm charging them with my gladiator helmet, boxers, and shotgun, ear pro be damned.
      For most people I recommend the XCEL 100's as the best choice overall (outside of the scenario you described), for money spent vs features. Both the XCEL 100 and 500 dont get in the way of cheek weld with rifle or shotgun. I personally use the xcel 500's after this long review period.

      @@AleksanderOdessit Thanks for responding. I ended up getting the 500bt. The HL Pros I think may be too big for my AR and may get in the way. The blutooth may allow me to mow my lawn while listening to a podcast without turning up my podcast volume to dangerous levels to hear it above my mower like I normally do. From what I've hear the spatial awareness (I'm not really sure what the official name for this feature is, but this is what I'm going with) with the Razor's is not good. It would be interesting to see a review done with someone blindfolded to see which muffs allow someone to pick out the direction a sound is coming from the best. Do you think the pickup ability, sound quality and amplification of the 500BTs are at least as good as the Impact Sports? I've been getting a lot of similar comments about hearing pro not being that important during a break in. I've also seen comments about temporarily going deaf, or being totally disoriented from a large gun being fired in the house so I'd rather have the advantage of those things affecting the criminal instead of me. I figure if someone is still trying to get in and I have a couple seconds to get hearing pro on that would be good. If I don't have the time so be it. Honestly things probably rarely happen the way we envision, but I'm envisioning a scenario that would be more expected such as some post election riots and looting. In reality I'm worried about even being able to shoot the gun if woken up especially when from a dead sleep there have been times when I can't figure out how to turn my alarm off. :D

      @AleksanderOdessit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelsanders9147 I thought I responded but I guess it never sent. Glad to hear you like the 500BT's. I chose those for myself as well, with the 100's as a backup.
      you're dead on about the razor's not having spatial awareness, as they're not directional mics. Think of "mono vs. stereo" I think they were the only pair in this set lacking the directional mic features, and consequentially the worst sounding pair of the test.
      I would say the 500's are definitely better than the impact sports. More on the level of the impact pros.
      You brought up a valid point about ear protection. In case a gun ever fires in doors, it would be incredibly disorienting to the shooter. Especially if its a long gun. What a lot of people dont realize is that a sound THAT loud indoors, can cause you to lose your balance entirely due to the shock to your ear drums...Loud sound is half the payload of a "flash bang" or concussion grenade.
