Hey Coby. I saw Star Wars in 1978 when I was thirteen and it changed my world. I still think Empire is one of the greatest sequels ever made! I liked Jedi and that was that. Then George Lucas played with the original trilogy not just enhancing scenes with CGI but actually changing parts of the story! Then came the prequels where Lucas stopped being a film maker and instead became a toy designer. The Phantom Menace completely destroyed the beautiful mythos created for the force and turned it into a biological need for midichlorians in the blood. The prequels were filmed on gold digital tape which allowed for as many as 100 CGI shots on one frame making some scenes ridiculously over crowded too confusing on screen to watch sometimes. I think Solo wasn't bad but not great either, Rogue One I think is one of the best SW films and I'm still glad that the Rat House left the maker's vision for it alone. It has the best Vader scene ever filmed! The Force Awakens renewed my love and enthusiasm in the franchise even though I immediately recognised it follows the beats of what was now called A New Hope, J.J.Abraams made a good SW film. Then Disney turned the second one to Rian Johnson who not only killed Luke, but managed to ret-con everything from The Force Awakens to the point where J.J. taking the reigns again for Rise of Skywalker had almost nothing to work with! I'm sure it wasn't all Rian's fault, rather excessive rewrites and corporate interference but the fact is most real fans hate Last Jedi and subsequently Rise as well! The Rat House with exception of the Mandalorian has only weakened the fr

The onl reason she may have enjoyed it is because she doesnt fully understand the lore and Luke Skywalker, which is fair because she has NEVER seen any of the movies before. At the end of the day this movie absolutely obliterates his character arc from the previous movies. The movie is so hated because it is very canon breaking. Rian Johnson has also explicitley stated how his plan was to piss off the people who were already fans of the franchise.

In the battle against Kylo Ren, Luke did a dopplegänger. It was a very difficult Jedi skill, typical of very strong and experienced masters. He projected himself from the planet of Ahch-To (that´s why his semblance was different from reality, much younger and as they remembered him since he went into exile). He spent his last strength giving the rebellion a new chance... then, in front of those two suns (like in Tatooine) ... he became "one with the Force".

I unironically really like the fake duel scene in Last Jedi as Luke is essentially being a teacher giving his wayward pupil one final lesson. His projection does not have his current appearance but looks like he did at their Jedi temple confrontation, providing Ben with the perfect focus for his anger and hate. Per his Dark Side philosophy, Ben should be hugely powerful under those circumstances.
Instead, Ben fails, because all that power is focused on flailing away at an insubstantial image while the people who are his actual objective sneak away while he is distracted. Luke is showing Ben the flaws in that Dark Side path, and doing so using some of the earliest lessons he received from Obi-Wan and Ben. “Your eyes can deceive you, don’t trust them.” “A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defence, never for attack.”
And for all that Rose’s line about saving what you love rather than fighting what you hate gets mocked, that’s exactly what Luke is doing. He’s saving Leia. He’s trying to save Ben by putting him on a path where he can potentially one day be redeemed. It’s not something he can achieve himself, just as Obi-Wan couldn’t redeem Anakin, because so much of Vader’s and Kylo’s anger and hate is focused on Obi-Wan and Luke, respectively.

I would be very curious to get the opinion on the sequel trilogy of people who had only seen the original trilogy but not the prequels (and none of the extended universe). As someone who grew up on the OT, the prequels (and the 1996/97 "Special Editions") fundamentally changed the flavour of Star Wars into something completely unrecognizable from the galaxy an entire generation grown up imagining. The sequel trilogy felt (to me, at least) very much like a continuation of that original Star Wars universe, free from everything Lucas and Filoni had dumped on it. It actually felt like it plausibly took place in the same universe as the OT, which the PT (and everything that it spawned like the Clone Wars cartoon) absolutely did not.

In this movie, on the watery/rocky-island planet of Ahch-To, you saw a thala-siren giving *green* milk. 🔸 There's a ten year age difference between 'Kylo' and 'Rey', so... not twins. 🔸 I'm glad you recognized Canto Bight as being like Monte Carlo. Less worldly reacters default to Las Vegas, of course, despite the radically different vibe. 🔸 The emotive birds are called porgs - the racing beasts are fathiers - the crystal foxes are vulptices (vulptex, singular). 🔸 No, the little craft 'Finn' was flying wouldn't have even damaged that huge, armored laser canon. 'Rose' saved his life because she understood the engineering facts of the situation. 🔸 I'm glad you appreciate this movie as my friends and I do. I think you'll appreciate EPISODE IX, as well.

Did TLJ do things differently though? It opens with the Rebels fleeing from the Empire and disabling one of the big Imperial ships. Then there's a long space chase, and a hoped-for ally (who lives in the only city in the Galaxy that looks nice) turns out to actually be a traitor. An apprentice Jedi gets training from a master who was not what they were expecting. The training involves a descent into dark cave where they come face-to-face with themselves. The Jedi prematurely meets the evil black knight who offers that they join forces to take over the Empire. AT-ATs attack the rebel bunker, and the rebel hovercraft mount a futile defense that buys time for them to flee. The rebels are left licking their wounds and uncertain as to their next move.
Does this sound like a Star Wars movie you've already seen? TLJ was pretty, but the basic plot beats were indeed a redo.

Agreed. That section is a weird sort of plot bubble. They could have found any number of ways to get to dismantling the hyperspace tracking, and the chosen one does feel disconnected from the overall plot. The only real thing it does aside from enabling a way onto the ship and doing the thing, is that it gives Finn a different perspective.
I’m not a huge fan of the ‘space race’ where the good guys can neither be overtaken nor can they lose their pursuers. Again, they could’ve just had their base found and then be on the verge of destruction.
But I really like the Luke plots in this. I think they make a lot of sense. Yoda failed and ran away to exile and nobody batted an eyelid. Luke ran away and it drove people nuts. I completely agree that just presenting him with his father’s lightsaber wasn’t going to magically snap him back into action.

A lot of fans heavily criticized how Luke was depicted and couldn't handle seeing him as anything but eternally hopeful and optimistic. Luke just made a mistake like any other person. He blamed himself for the consequences of it, which was the deaths of all his students at the hands of Kylo Ren and his Knights. The resulting aftermath he witnessed when kneeling next to R2 mirrored the burning Lars homestead in A New Hope, only then the Empire was to blame, here Luke's negativity rebounded onto himself. His self-imposed exile and newly cynical perception of the Jedi was Luke punishing himself over what happened. He simply needed to be brought back to who he was before by Rey and Yoda. That was his character arc. You can find similar, sometimes briefer arcs for other pop culture characters like Bruce Wayne, Superman, Professor X, Logan, Tony Stark, Rocky Balboa etc.

Cmon dude, you're gonna tell me Luke "I know there is still good in you" Skywalker was contemplating killing his nephew because he _might_ be tempted by the Dark Side? The man who successfully turned his father, the second most evil man in the galaxy, back to the light? That just doesn't track.
The character in Episode 8 is an _interesting_ character... but it doesn't make sense for that character _to be_ Luke.
Edit: I know it might be difficult for most of you troglodytes to comprehend, but I actually do NOT "hate" TLJ. I don't think it's a good movie, but I wouldn't skip it on a SW marathon, and I enjoy quite a few things about it. The way Mark Hamill plays his character is one of them; I think his interactions with Rey are some of the best things in the movie... but I'm NOT gonna pretend like that character is the same Luke Skywalker from the original trilogy, because it is completely nonsensical that RotJ Luke would turn into _this much_ of a failure _just because_ of the specific reasons TLJ implies of "oof he had slight concerns about Ben, and then _snuck into his room and lit his lightsaber for no reason_ " (nevermind the fact that again, he redeemed Evilest Boy Vader). And I'm sorry, I truly am, but "canon" does NOT equate to "good writing".

The first was not knowing Snoke was evil. The second was the belief Sidious was dead, although he and Leia both felt his influence after he died. The third is where to find them...? Sidious was beyond the barriers of the known galaxy. Snoke had his hiding place which was as powerful as Jakku at hiding the darkness.
When he looked back at Ben, the look in his eyes told him his thoughts would turn into guilt for how he saw it. Luke reacted. Ben reacted. The scene wasn't what any of us thought. 2:43 an interesting fact about the theme. George Lucas had John Williams do the main theme in the same key as the 20th Century Fox theme. Fox had stopped using that theme and logo in the early 70s and Lucas liked it so much 4:49 this is one of my favorite parts of this movie. There’s only about a handful of parts I like. 5:24 that’s what drove a lot of fans nuts when it first came out on stage trying to figure out how to do it. 5:53 Anthony Daniels has been in every Star Wars movies from Episode 1 to Episode 9 including Rogue One and Solo. In Solo he played on of the slaves on Kessel and I believe was the one that was helping the Wookies escape after loading the Falcon. 8:13 this scene was also pretty funny. Loved seeing Hux get tossed around. 9:19 the prosthetic skin was damaged over the years and he wasn’t able to have it properly maintained so he removed the skin. 9:45 close. They’re called Porgs. 12:04 remember in the last one she said she dreamed of green land surrounded by water 14:18 it’s supposed to be like a teflon bandage while it’s healing. 25:08 that alien was voiced by Mark Hamill. 34:58 what’s interesting about the scar is it’s similar to his grandfather’s scar. Anakin had one over his eye. 39:05 I love how you can make out BB8 say “We?”. 43:20 that’s Carrie Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd. 48:22 Vader didn’t get cut in half. He just lost his limbs which anyone could survive cause the Saber cauterizes the wounds. 54:32 no he was always the dark side but he didn’t want to be under Snoke’s rule anymore. 1:02:49 love the shoulder wipe kind of like “you still have much to learn young one”. 1:07:34 Looking upon twin suns like his home on Tatooine. Great to see some love for this one. The plot honestly threw me off on opening night. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. Felt the Canto Bight side quest was kinda silly (and still do a little). And the plot in general just didn’t go where I thought it would go at all. But on multiple rewatches, I learned to kind of retroactively subvert expectations (if that makes sense at all lol) and try to start with a clean slate and an open mind. And I found myself loving this one more and more. I think the fact that the plot took so many turns and kind of refused to emulate a previous episode (like Force Awakens did with A New Hope - even though I still love it!) made me appreciate it more. And the more I exposed myself to Luke’s final moment, the more I realized how badass that was. Luke went out like a G, for real. I did think that Leia part (you all know which one 😉) was a little weird at first, but then you have to realize that she and Luke are friggin’ twins and they share that CRAZY Skywalker DNA.

I'm 50 years old and grew up with the original trilogy... and I very much enjoy this film. It has its flaws like any film (I think this one has too many twists and turns for no real reason, and it clutters the films main plot) - BUT, I like the Rey character and love Kylo Ren's arc of WANTING to be 'bad guy' and just can't fully do it (unlike Ani who was forced to be evil) and showing how powerful Luke is was amazing. : "Did you think I was going to walk up with a laser sword and take down the whole First Order?" - Luke Skywalker

@@jamespearson7871 I love and fascinated with Kylo's story... He wants to be Darth Vader NOT Anakin... I LOVE that. The are two different characters (from a certain point of view) It would be a GREAT Animated series (so its easier to use/deal with Han, Luke and Leia) - The Clone Wars, Rebels and Bad Batch did great filling the gaps between 2,3 and 4. It's time to help Mando, Ahsoka and Fett fill in 6 and 7 with a new Animated series (or at least Tales of the Jedi shorts)

Good for you. I don't think it's as good as the movies of the first trilogies but the hate this movie generated is beyond ridiculous. SW fans should be much less toxic and aggressive about their preferences.

@@Balrog2005 I don't even rank Star Wars anymore. It's my bible, I've been watching since the 70s - I like some chapters more then others, but I don't hate any of them. I have 3 "ranks" I guess... ones I re-watch the most, the ones I re-watch the least and the ones in the middle. BUT, the least watched aren't bad... just don't re-watch as much.

I fell asleep watching this in the cinema and have never seen it all the way through. The big mistake the prequels made was not reuniting Luke with Han and Leia, all of us who saw the films first time around wanted that and we never got it. They just callously and needlessly bumped them off one by one.

Fun fact: The owl-penguin creatures are caled Porgs, and they were created because the filming location for Luke's Jedi colony was the real world island of Skellig Michael, which is home to a thriving puffin population. Since they couldn't show the puffins, they invented Porgs.
