    Around 1975, I was a very young GI a bit intoxicated with some friends leaving a bar in Seoul Korea. On the corner while waiting for our taxi, I spotted a vendor selling fake watches. The Rolex Submariner attracted by eye and for the whopping price of $10 in went into my pocket. After watching your video, I went and found my fake automatic Rolex in my sock drawer. Had no expectations it would work but after only a few minutes the hands started to move. Been wearing it for about a week and thus far it's kept great time. I take it off at night and am surprised it is still running when I wake. Yep, it's a fake but now I'm almost 67 and just looking at that watch brings back some darn good memories and big questions where have the years gone.

      I was friends with a guy stationed there during Nam who had a nice Tudor Sub that he traded a fake Rolex Sub for. He bought the fake Rolex from a street corner vendor because it looked pretty decent, and after a couple of weeks it got banged up and scratched. One of his fellow servicemen remarked that he wished he had the money to get a Rolex Sub, but all he could afford was the Tudor. My friend asked him if he wanted to swap, and the guy took the fake Rolex and my friend walked away with a real Tudor. He told him that he wanted the Tudor because he wouldn't be as sad if it got banged up like the "Rolex".

      Bought one (a Fake Rolex) in Dubai. It never lost a second, but had to reset it on most mornings, but a great watch until I got over-confident and wore it in a sauna. Bought a fake Omega (battery) at around the same time, both around £20/£25 and still have it and, after around 10 years, it still keeps perfect time. It is said' imitation is the greatest form of flattery'. Why they pursue fakes is open to question as they are only bought (usually) by those who cannot afford the real thing. Those who can afford the real thing would (usually) not be seen dead with a fake.

    Double irony: Rolex is what got me into replica watches. Replica watches are what *really* got me into Rolex. Let me explain- I love the look of Rolexes. But couldn't possibly understand why they cost so much. I was more than happy to buy the "same" thing for $600. Then I started to notice the subtle (and meaningful) differences. I would even upgrade my replicas with high quality aftermarket parts. Finally, I realized it's that last 5% attention to detail that makes a real Rolex worth 500% more to me. I now own a genuine Datejust and GMT Master, and I never ever would have been able to appreciate them for the masterpieces that they are had I not been into replicas. Besides, the replica watch community is often more knowledgeable and appreciative of the genuine watches than the gen community! So make that triple irony ;)

    This is very educational. I always thought the quartz tick tock of the second hand would give away the identity of a fake Rolex. But this replica second hand moves as smoothly as the genuine Rolex. And it's accurate to boot. You are so right about the day arriving soon when it will be impossible to tell the difference between the replica and the genuine without opening the watch for inspection. Then the difference will be obvious. I cannot understand how this replica can sell for only $100. This is most remarkable. The Chinese who created this replica are truly gifted craftsmen to be able to do this and make a profit at the same time. It's hard to believe.

Literally the same materials, jewels etc, they do run about 800-1000$ and if it wasn't for the serial number engravings, even a Rolex dealership would accept the replica as genuine. The fake one's font has the letters more smashed together (specifically the "Swiss Made" and "Officially Certified" letters, whereas the real one has the font a little more spaced out between the letters, creating an overall more polished look.

    This debate will rage and rage. I always loved 4 Rooms, the TV programme. The idea that value is simply what people are prepared to pay. 50K for a 'Banksy' found in a skip was one of my favourites. Rolex is a particularly curious case. I like them, I'd wear one. 10K for a straight blck Sub...is complete and utter madness, but it shows how skilled Rolex are at limiting supply deliberately to stimulate extreme demand. Ultimately it's customers are the ones forcing the prices up...and feel even more pleased to pay more due to the exclusivity. A very bizarre simbiotic relationship. Customers are simultaneously pissed off at the ever increasing prices and yet inwardly delighted that they can afford it....and almost everyone else can't. Luxury goods are a bizarre and strange world that fascinate me as a designer. The real monetary value of a Submariner? I'd say £1500 and there'd still be a lot of margin. My stone cold view as someone who manufactures things.

    About 12 years ago I bought an imitation Omega Seamaster Professional Automatic Chronometer for £62 delivered including insurance. I was such a good copy that many people thought it to be an original. About six years ago it stopped working so rather look foolish by taking it to a local watch repair shop I gave it to my friend who said he'd like to play about with the movement etc. About an hour after leaving my house he phoned to say it was working perfectly and I owed him for a new battery so overlooking the fact that it wasn't automatic not only did it look and feel like the real thing it had kept perfect time for six years. Unfortunately I somehow managed to strip the thread on the crown so it won't screw in and lock so when I wear it it catches and does not keep good time but the last time I saw it it was still working.

      It appeared the MOST obvious difference were the tolerances of each component. The replica had visible 'gaps' between the bracelet & lugs, and was also obviously uneven where it attaches to the back of the watch. The authentic watch looked to be almost PERFECTLY FLUSH in every place where the bracelet attaches to the 'watch' itself.
      I'm just not sure the reason most people purchase replicas? I've noticed that most 'normal' people rarely even notice, let alone comment on ANY watch I'm wearing. And any 'watch guys' who do notice I'm wearing a 'luxury' watch will probably end up recognizing it's fake...
      So there just doesn't seem to be any 'upside', especially when it seems that decent knock offs often cost more than a REAL Hamilton or other 'affordable' SWISS watch. I could understand if they were like $100, but last I checked anything not embarrassingly fake were going for at LEAST $500?

    To say that 904L stainless steel is Rolex's special steel is a bit of an exaggeration. 904L is a quite common material, and is used a lot chemical industry, in piping and other equipment coming in contact with corrosive chemicals. It's more corrosive resistant (pitting specifically) than 316L in certain environments, but actually easier to work with, because it's slightly softer. Of course, it's also slightly more expensive.
    There's really no rational reason for using 904L in a diver's watch, unless you intend to dive in acid. 316L works well in sea water.

    Very good replica.
    Replicas exist because the genuine are hugely expensive of course.
    And of course being £100 will make you question the real price of the genuine.
    The genuine is obviously superior, but never worth 100 x the price of the fake.
    If the same watchmaker made essentially the same watch ( materials etc...) , without the brand then it would be worth a fraction of the price, proving you are just paying for the name as with any brand.
    The interesting thing about this is someone is building this fake for a £100 , so why are the genuine so expensive?

      ONLY the names of a Living Soul is in Mixed Case Letters.
      The word CORPORATION derives from the Latin CORPUS

      { it is from there we derive the term 'BODY CORPORATE' }
      CORPSES are DEAD entities = thus without a soul - and have the

    Bought a SeaDweller about 34 years ago, not for the cache value, but because I did lots of outdoor stuff and I wanted the toughest, most reliable watch. I was just a beginning teacher and paid about 6-7 weeks pay back in about 1987 in Australia and wanted the best. Did the usual servicing for a time then for one reason or another let the servicing lapse until a mate introduced me to a retired watchmaker acquaintance who just happened to be the last one to do a service on my watch. It surprised him and myself to know that last service was 23 years ago, and the watch was worn/used every day, faultlessly, for those 23 years, as it's my only watch...which is how I have always viewed it...it's not a Rolex...it's just my watch. Another
    friend far more interested in antique watches, etc, when he heard this commented that that was the truest indication of the quality/reliability of a Rolex compared to any other brand of watch, regardless of price or reputation... name another that can go 23 years without a service and still perform reliably day in day out.

    first thing I saw was the second hand that was not running as smoothly as on the real one. it's hard to see the little cosmetic differences in the pictures but that I could see that right away.

    After watching this video; Never buy a real Rolex because the fake is the same. The only difference is the price. So don't buy a watch for $ 10.000 (only for the name) where you can buy the same watch for only just $ 100.

    The immediate tell between these two for me was how well the bracelet integrates with the lugs.
    And it's crazy because this was a $100 rep, vs some of the $500-$1000 "super clones" out there.

      Yep, the tolerances between the bracelet and lugs is usually the first thing I look at. The integration looks nearly flush on the front, and the inferior fitment is even MORE obvious on the back, where the fake bracelet 'sticks out' where the authentic bracelet fits 'perfectly'.
      I'm surprised people still look for 'ticking' second hands. Isn't that just going to tell you if it's QUARTZ? Even my $500 Hamilton (ETA) Automatics have fairly smooth sweeping seconds, and I thought that was common for most MECHANICAL watches?

    I was only able to notice the difference in font initially, with the fake being a little taller. I'm not a watch person, but guessed correctly as the real font just seemed more pleasant to look at and felt more classy.

    I had a real Rolex Submariner which took me 18 months to pay off and I was so happy to have a nice watch. Well, my model had sapphire watch crystal which scratched. I took it to a Rolex dealer and they replace the crystal (a hundred dollars). After I got it back the Benzel fell off somewhere and I took it back to the Rolex dealer sense they had to remove it to fix the crystal. They said it was my fault(some how). I was waring the watch when it fell off and noticed it was gone when I checked the time. I sent the watch to Rolex in New York and they said it was abused and they would not stand behind but would repair it for $400. Don't buy a Rolex it is not the watch that went to the moon I was so crushed Rolex would not repair it as a defect from repair br a authorised repair station.

    • @hsiaoshuang
      @hsiaoshuang 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no logic to the dealer's statement that you "abused" the watch. If you paid a fortune for it, the last thing you wanted to do was to abuse it! And a good watch of any brand would not have the cover coming off! My suspicion is Rolex itself used fake parts in its manufacturing!
