Tails' device was meant to control metal Sonic by syncing his thoughts with the real Sonic's thoughts, hence why the Sonic knew everything metal was going to do. Metal over the course of the fight became more and more like the real Sonic until the machine broke at which point his mind was completely in sync hence the heel change

The reason metal sonic turned good was actually hinted at. During the movie the owl states that sonic helped him (when he has the hip new clothing) but the viewer is supposed to realise sonic never came back at this point, and it was metal sonic. I think the idea is, because metal sonic copied sonic in every way, he also copied his good and kind nature. Remember, metal was never reported to do anything else but fight sonic, his primary target.
Fair point-but again its confusing still and needed to explain something in dialogue-even one line-also he tried to destory that arctic area to help eggman destory the world-so thats two bad thing he did. Here is the lines they could have used "Why didnt metal attack the old man" "Maybe he is copying more of sonics tendencies like his good nature". Boom. Easy fix.
I saw the Japanese version with the english subs and... Well, Tails and Knuckles outright say it. They literally reached to that conclusion. I don't know how it is in the English dub, but they make it pretty obvious that Metal Sonic also has his organic counterpart's personality.

I honestly, I absolutely LOVE this OVA, it's one of my all time favorite pieces of non-game Sonic media. Also, I absolutely love the thing with so much 80s and 90s anime where all the mechanical stuff is just so immaculately detailed xD
this OVA is a masterpiece fight me anyway, the point of metal sonic's actions near the end is that he really was a perfect copy of sonic, personality wise and not just in his abilities. you didn't mention the scene where he comes to take sonic's favourite clothes from owlman earlier which helps set it up, but yeah good overview
I'll agree it has probably the best animation ever for anything Sonic related, amazing music, and a compelling story, but at the same time that 3rd aspect is one of its biggest flaws. Its story leaves too many unanswered questions. That and its voice acting, but given the time it was localized it's excusable as anime wasn't as mainstream as it is today.

I know you said you're not a fan of Sarah, but I always liked her personality shifts and design in general. I'm actually sad that you didn't play the rest of the clip of her losing the game. Robotnik says he doesn't want to play again, but then she smugly says "I'll stop being your hostage" and he sits back down and frowns to do one more game. Moments like these I live for.
In japan the OVA was actually a 2 episode special. The first episode ended when Sonic and co heads off into Robotnicks base after defeating Metal Robotnick and the second episode starts off with Sonic shutting down the generator and meeting Metal Sonic. When they brought it over to America they thought it would be best to splice the two episodes together into one movie which is why it feels a little in-cohesive.
I absolutely love the Sonic OVA, it's fun and stupid and it knows it. And yes I love all the Sara and Robotnik stuff, and the turtle missile is just the greatest. It manages to have some great animation and action while still keep it all light hearted with the weird stuff all going on in the background. It's an absolute shame we never got more of this.

I think for what it was and what it was trying to be, it definitely succeeded. Not saying it's a masterpiece but I think the cast and dialogue were top notch, and elevated a subpar story. But that's not what the film intended to do, it intended to be a straight comedy for families and in that respect it was funnier than most movies I've seen.
The biggest compliment I can give it is that I actually want to see a sequel. Which is more then I thought for a kids movie based on sonic which I haven’t been much of a fan of recently. I really was a fan of how they characterized Sonic as a bit more of a goofball and made him a bit less full of himself.

You guys passed over the best scene! at around 44 and a half minutes into the movie, they are rolling in a snowball, and then when they get out of the snowball, Tails is so scared that he immediately grabbed onto Sarah, and then Knuckles effectively calls him a pervert by going "Tails! Get off! I never thought you'd stoop that low..." it is the best thing knuckles has ever said
This is a trip. I watched this back in, like, 2001 when it was uploaded to Shadow of a Hedgehog. Given that it was 2001, it was uploaded at 144P and video-only so you had to scrounge up a translated script (helpfully provided by the site!) and read along to a silent video. It was a magical experience.
I remember the only "release" this had in the UK being the trailers within Sonic Jam. Seriously, I would spend so much time watching those and it wasn't until several years later when home internet became fairly common that I "obtained" and watched the full OVA.
No, it did actually have a VHS release. I remember borrowing it from the library. My parents even made a copy of it so I could still watch it after we returned it.

I personally like Sarah as a character. Her relationship with Sonic and Hate towards Robotnik was very entertaining in my opinion. And now that this is done.....how long do we have to wait for you to talk about the Animal Crossing movie? (I’m being serious. That does exist.)
I rewatched this movie recently with my sister, us being sonic fans since childhood and all. I was a bit worried that the OVA wouldn‘t be that good and my memories simply being nostalgia, but it really holds up. Haven‘t watched either of the live action movies to compare, but this one is great from start to finish in my opinion. Best version of metal sonic we‘ve ever seen. That shot of his turbine firing up as the ground crumbles is amazing.
Just for note, if anyone wants explanation to why the voices were weird in this OVA, it was because the cast was almost entirely made up of voice actors from the now former ADV films. The dub was recorded at their late Monster Island sound studio, it closed in 2005 after ADV films bought Industrial Smoke & Mirrors before renaming it three times. The first name under ADV's ownership was ADV Studios (creative name, I know) then ADV renamed it Amusement Park Media after ADV started offering their recording services to third-parties before renaming it in 2009 to Seraphim Digital. After ADV closed, they're now independently hired by various companies for their voice and translation work for various projects.
I played some old Sonic games as a kid, but this was the first time I'd ever seen Knuckles, and was really confused why he didn't have a Cowboy hat in the games.
Ah yes, this movie; probably my favorite out of all the Sonic animations! I heard this was actually supposed to be a pilot to a full series. If that's true, it's a shame we never got it, but on it's own the movie is pretty great!
I remember when I was a little kid, my dad "borrowed" a bunch of sonic games off the internet for me and a Genesis emulator and also had a video file of this movie on our computer. It was in Japanese subtitled english and I think that's one thing that really helped me learn how to read. I was 4 or 5 years old and this movie was the coolest thing ever to me.
In the theater I saw the Sonic Movie in yesterday, they actually showed part of the fight scene with Mecha Robotnik from the OVA, along with Sonic Underground, Sonic X, and more video game shows and movies. It was neat.
I'll always agree with Johnny's idea that a final product is a final product, but I think the OVA's rushed nature came down to these two movies actually being pilots for a potential TV series. That's likely why there were so many loose threads all about (the president, Sarah, the island Sonic and Tails live on, Knuckles, etc.). They were all meant to be elaborated upon had things gotten greenlit.
i would watch this on vhs everytime when i stayed home sick from school as a kid. i think they should have every voice actor that voiced sonic cameo in the next movie. tails sounds alot like how he did in sonic heroes. i'm kind of tired of sonic being an alien in these stories. i liked how he just lived in earth's future like in this movie and in the comics.

I love the Sonic OVA, I watch it several times a year, I honestly don't see what is confusing about the second half of the movie. it all fits very well together, heck even the first time I watched it I was not confused or felt rushed by anything. also Sonic has always been in a post apocalyptic Earth, in every canon there is Mobius is just another name for Earth so it's cool that you bring this movie up and talk about it but I do question your knowledge of the Franchise.
I'm guessing the reason it feels rushed for some people is because the OVA was supposed to be a full on series at one point, and the Movie we ended up with are actually just two "Episodes" ducttaped together. The story was first made with some more stuff afterwards in mind, but then they had to make do with what was already there.

This is a trip. I watched this back in, like, 2001 when it was uploaded to Shadow of a Hedgehog. Given that it was 2001, it was uploaded at 144P and video-only so you had to scrounge up a translated script (helpfully provided by the site!) and read along to a silent video.
It was a magical experience.

I remember the only "release" this had in the UK being the trailers within Sonic Jam. Seriously, I would spend so much time watching those and it wasn't until several years later when home internet became fairly common that I "obtained" and watched the full OVA.
No, it did actually have a VHS release. I remember borrowing it from the library. My parents even made a copy of it so I could still watch it after we returned it.

I rewatched this movie recently with my sister, us being sonic fans since childhood and all.
I was a bit worried that the OVA wouldn‘t be that good and my memories simply being nostalgia, but it really holds up.
Haven‘t watched either of the live action movies to compare, but this one is great from start to finish in my opinion. Best version of metal sonic we‘ve ever seen. That shot of his turbine firing up as the ground crumbles is amazing.
Just for note, if anyone wants explanation to why the voices were weird in this OVA, it was because the cast was almost entirely made up of voice actors from the now former ADV films. The dub was recorded at their late Monster Island sound studio, it closed in 2005 after ADV films bought Industrial Smoke & Mirrors before renaming it three times.
The first name under ADV's ownership was ADV Studios (creative name, I know) then ADV renamed it Amusement Park Media after ADV started offering their recording services to third-parties before renaming it in 2009 to Seraphim Digital. After ADV closed, they're now independently hired by various companies for their voice and translation work for various projects.
I played some old Sonic games as a kid, but this was the first time I'd ever seen Knuckles, and was really confused why he didn't have a Cowboy hat in the games.
Ah yes, this movie; probably my favorite out of all the Sonic animations! I heard this was actually supposed to be a pilot to a full series. If that's true, it's a shame we never got it, but on it's own the movie is pretty great!

I remember when I was a little kid, my dad "borrowed" a bunch of sonic games off the internet for me and a Genesis emulator and also had a video file of this movie on our computer. It was in Japanese subtitled english and I think that's one thing that really helped me learn how to read. I was 4 or 5 years old and this movie was the coolest thing ever to me.

In the theater I saw the Sonic Movie in yesterday, they actually showed part of the fight scene with Mecha Robotnik from the OVA, along with Sonic Underground, Sonic X, and more video game shows and movies. It was neat.

I'll always agree with Johnny's idea that a final product is a final product, but I think the OVA's rushed nature came down to these two movies actually being pilots for a potential TV series. That's likely why there were so many loose threads all about (the president, Sarah, the island Sonic and Tails live on, Knuckles, etc.). They were all meant to be elaborated upon had things gotten greenlit.
i would watch this on vhs everytime when i stayed home sick from school as a kid. i think they should have every voice actor that voiced sonic cameo in the next movie.

i'm kind of tired of sonic being an alien in these stories. i liked how he just lived in earth's future like in this movie and in the comics.

I love the Sonic OVA, I watch it several times a year, I honestly don't see what is confusing about the second half of the movie. it all fits very well together, heck even the first time I watched it I was not confused or felt rushed by anything. also Sonic has always been in a post apocalyptic Earth, in every canon there is Mobius is just another name for Earth so it's cool that you bring this movie up and talk about it but I do question your knowledge of the Franchise.
I'm guessing the reason it feels rushed for some people is because the OVA was supposed to be a full on series at one point, and the Movie we ended up with are actually just two "Episodes" ducttaped together.
The story was first made with some more stuff afterwards in mind, but then they had to make do with what was already there.
Eggman: "Okay, now what should I do to pass the time while Sonic and Tails make their way to Robotroblis?"
