Oh my, that Schmincke gold has me dreaming about making my own rich, luxurious Klimt-esque scenes. However, I'm under no illusion that my painting skills are anywhere near requiring $20 per bottle materials, quite yet, so I'll stick with what I have & just add a $5.99 set of (28) pearlescents until the urge passes. If I accidentally come up with a masterpiece in the meantime, there's always leftover gold leaf in the craft room. lol

    • @thefrugalcrafter

gold ink by winsor & newton is a good substitute for klimt-esque paintings at a few bucks a bottle.

I doubt anyone will see this with how late I am, but I feel like you could make a very magical autumn scene with the primary palette. All the bark and what's left of the greens could be matte, and the leaves that are actually changing could be iridescent!

I bought the Hobby Lobby ones today based on this review and just love them. It's so fun to make fractured watercolor (Use washi tape to section off a piece of watercolor paper into geometric patterns and then paint each exposed space with a different colorway) and then add embellishment with the metallics. I really see the value in buying pro grade watercolors for the low frustration, clear and vibrant mixes they make but with metallics, the cheapest thing that creates the effect you like is great, because you likely won't be mixing them. It's really hard not to love them when they only cost $10 (50% off sale).

@@ChristinaTodd1970 from all I have tried from metallic watercolour Finetec is best hands down, was wondering why Lindsey didn’t got those out,but guess cos then all rest would be left like utter crap and that’s many brands not happy,so get why she avoided them but trust me you shouldn’t...check on Amazon Finetec pearlescent colours 24 colour set,has chameleon on it-love that set,it was bit over 70£ but Gosh if it’s worth it..I was long time taking cheaper stuff and just not wanting to splurge,my friend wanted to make me present for bday and told me to chose something I want but don’t wanna get cos bit too pricey for my wallet,so I chose that set and I’m very happy with it,have not touched other metallics practically since then..we’ll got Rubens out for colours I don’t have and just to add those in too now and then just to use them up,but rest long time forgotten and even given away to neighbors kids ..So yeah, once you try Finetec there is no way back

That was fun! :) I have a couple of those sets and will also be creating some out of straight mica and eyeshadows too. Oh and those glitter pens you showed us how to make with the floor polish I'm also planning on making. I already have the ingredients. So many projects!
Whenever I get to it I want to try and capture cephalopods like cuttlefish, and the shine and shimmer of exotic Birds of Paradise, and those amazing humming birds with the long beautiful tails, ....uuuuuu and the Resplendent quetzal bird using iridescent paints from Daniel Smith and all the metallic paints. It's all these long term goals but how fun to work on it.

I doubt if I have used them more than once or twice, but I know they're there if I need them. I also have a set of metallic color sticks that I rub on or mix with water. Seems to be all the metallic products that I need. Oh, I forgot, I also have a set of 4 perfect pearls. So I guess I'm all set! ahh so excited to watch this- so excited that I'm not even going to save it for on the elliptical tomorrow! Thanks so much for doing this. btw, I repotted my Twinkling H2O's like you suggested into a palette and the first few pots just released their color instantly and then the rest were, like, CRAZY GLUED in. It took three days to soak them all and get them out. I had my husband in here with a screwdriver and a hammer at midnight chipping them out by the end. I assumed it was going to take, like, half an hour- tops- to repot them. I added a bunch of gel gum arabic and water into their new wells and stirred all of it with a little battery operated ink stirrer and I'm hoping that they set back up and I can use them- they are truly beautiful at full strength. It was mesmerizing. (Now I want true holographic and full strength duochrome watercolors, plus a true chrome-like watercolor with a mirror finish.)

I stopped buying metallic watercolors, though I have quite a few Twinkling H2Os from a few years ago...enough colors to have a good range. But...what I found is that the (drawing a blank ) Oh cool, had one right on hand.. Wink of Stella clear glitter brush is great for using like an aqua brush when using standard watercolors. It is actually better after you have emptied the pen at least once, then refilled it with distilled water. I have one pen that has been refilled with water 3x already and I actually like it better than the new pen that is thicker (fluid wise, that is) I had originally gotten all of the WoS colors, but soon realized that it was very unnecessary to do that since I like it better just using them in combination with water colors or water based markers. Some folks might find it to be a good option as opposed to investing in glimmery water color sets. Having said that, I have all of the Prima WC sets now and have decided that I won't pick up any more of them if they turn out more since I currently have ten tins. However, if they were to do some jewel toned shimmering water colors, I might reconsider that stand. Thanks for doing all of the comparison videos for us. I enjoyed your perspective on 'unbiased' videos, but I do tend to trust your reactions to the products you show us.

But I just now checked and Amazon UK has them now, for £21.84. They’re my favorite set to use in coloring books (with a water brush so it’s not too much water), because of the metallics.

Just yesterday I saw someone that used a Altoids tin to put some half pans in oh, and they spray-painted the lid White. I don't know if that would be a feasible option for your Komerabi's or not. I think that's the one you said the only reason you didn't use them was because they didn't have a mixing palette. Really appreciate you doing this video. And I kind of wish I'd seen it before about to find text I would have gone for those Hobby Lobby ones. Mine are only like the silver and several shades of gold and they're all the metal colors instead of the blues and purples and greens etcetera. But I did also like what to find text that I can take the pans out and just replace the pans if I end up using more of one than the other. Assuming of course I actually get them out and use them. 🤣

This was a delightful comparison/showdown. Thank you for all the insight and different ideas on how to use them.
As for the Prima metallics, I integrated them into other combined Prima pallets (I fit 21 half-pans in each palette, to get the sets down into three portable tins.). I wind up using them as highlights, like on a flower, an insect wing, or lights/lanterns, etc. I also have the H2O pots, and they are indeed fussy to open and use. I just look at my swatches and pull a few colors to highlight on top of my finished piece. That’s really how a I use any metallics, as an accent on top of other colors. It’s intriguing to see that there are vibrant sets you can really use on their own.
Do you have many samples of how you use metallics in finished pieces? The calligraphy/lettering idea is an intriguing one. 🌈🎨👌

Thank you very reviewing all these I have a really important question I recently looked on eBay and there is someone selling a 48 metallic set of Paul Rubens watercolours although they say glitter instead of metallic and also sell a 48 half pants set of normal colours. They also sell the 24 set in Barris in both but I was very surprised to see the 48 set is this a scam or has Paul Rubens expanded because I could not find their website or any information to back this up one way or the other.

Masters touch at hobby lobby has a set of 4 tubes of metallic paints. The tubes are a bit bigger than the last tube ones you showed. I got them cause they weren't expensive when masters touch products are 50% off. I haven't got to play with them yet, one reason is because the only black paper I have (yep, clearance rack). The label says 100 lb paper, but it feels really thin to me. Anyway, thanks for all the info Lindsay, your information is always helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to show all this. It's very useful. I was interested that you didn't include Fine Tec. That is what I have at present and have been trying out some different ways to use them and also to get more colors. An interesting thing I discovered is that I can create some pretty, shimmering embellishments for card making by painting the Fine Tec paints onto the brown side of hearts and shapes cut from thin cardboard of cracker boxes. :-) (If that makes sense.)

Can you please explain the difference between metallic paints and pearlescent paints. Are they all made with mica, or some made with metals? The terms seem to be used interchangeably. Not bad enough that I am obsessed with having lots of watercolor sets...I am also too curious about how things are made or how they work. Also, can "sparkly" paints be swatched on black cardstock or must it be black watercolor paper?

Very late to comment, but thank you for the large comparison of metallic paints. I ended up purchasing a small set of 6 gold/silver/bronze Komorebi MozArt paints due to the lower cost, but had wondered if they would perform as well as the Paul Rubens. Seeing the two brands tested side by side has quelled my worries. Thanks for all you do! :)

Hi Lindsey! When you first pulled out the Prima Shimmering Lights but said you couldn’t think what to use them for, I saw a fall palette. I’d use them to add a bit of shimmer to fall leaves or fruits like your grapes, also a bit of shimmer to hair, feathers or even fur! How about when painting jewelry or crockery? Just some thoughts. Thanks for sharing!

I have the niji and the sparkling H2Os. I love them both. The niji is convenient and easy on the go.
I love the H2Os for the variety of colors. I go them years ago for a great price. But I hated the individual lids. My solution is to place the pots in a slim plastic paper holder. I removed all my lids so no I just spray the paints I want and when done I just close the box lid and have not had any mold because there is enough air for the paints to dry.

Your price/quality comparisons are so helpful, thank you! Two questions-I couldn't find the 24ct Prima set anywhere... Is it just two different sets of 12 you have to get? And also, what do you think of the new Altenew metallic in comparison to all these?

Lindsay, I hope this question is relevant. I purchased Unicorn Spit at a stampers expo not knowing really how to use it. I would like to mix /make a fine mist for paper crafting. I tried to use metallic acrylic paints mixed with 91% alcohol in small squirt bottles that I purchased at Hobby Lobby. The paints clogged the misters and the spray was way too forceful. I can't find a good video for the Unicorn Spit on paper (mostly videos for glass and wood). And I need a good mister. Thanks Lindsay.
