    👏🏼 A great video; an informative video. 👏🏼
    I gladly came across Hajra Meeks video by mistake, and after watching her compare, discuss, paint & EXPLAIN both Schmincke & FineTec’s metallics & pearl colours, I, 👍🏼 & subscribed.
    Thank you Ms. Meeks for delivering a video containing more meat than most other videos I find on TH-cam.

      yes, I am aware of this--they describe it on their website. However, lots of people may not read that, and it's nice to swatch and see the color surprises on black vs white paper ourselves and share with others.

    Very interesting swatching. I have 6 tubes of Davinci iridescent tubes and one from Cheap Joes. I will have to swatch them on white and dark paper and see what happens. I bought them for Holiday cards but I don’t think I ever used them. Thanks very much for the video and information.

    ...just bought the Schminke sets off of Jackson’s. You’re an enabler 😂
    I’ve been reluctant to buy the Finetec ones and didn’t want to settle for the ones available in my local art store (Gansai Tambi). Thanks for showing the Schminke metallics! I had no clue they had them, and they’re also my favourite brand.
    New Subbie 👌👍

      XD XD Hope you enjoy the Schmincke colors, they are rather yummy! I try not to enable buying extra stuff, and I have no paid sponsors so my suggestions are purely honest, and I'm pretty good at avoiding temptation to buy more paints, but when Schmincke rolls out new stuff, it's impossible to resist as they're my favorite brand, too. And welcome to my channel of watercolor & wizardry!

    I also got the Schmincke set and love it! Since I also had an old gold and silver from Schmincke, I swatched them for comparison. Try a bigger area, because I see a good difference between white gold and silver. The white gold has a warmer hue. While I also see that antique gold and gold are really close, they have a different effect if you compare bigger areas. Not that it would make a big difference anything anyway ;) It seems that the particles differ, the original gold seems to have finger (smaller) particles. I also combined the white gold with the single pigment paints I had (also Schmincke is not offering all the pigments used in the Schmincke set as single paints - maybe the reason why it is limited) and then you really nicely get the same effect. If the whole set is too expensive, I would recommend the 6 metallics only and use the white gold to create the colors.

    • @HajraMeeks
      @HajraMeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is great advice--I recently saw someone else use Dr. ph martins silver metallic ink and add a regular pigment ink to it to get a fantastic colored metallic ink, so you are right on the money with using the white gold and colors to get sparkly color paints. We can also use the pearlescent medium, aqua shine, but I think the white gold you suggest will create a more metallic color rather than just a shimmer effect. thanks for commenting so others can benefit!

    Thank you so much for this review! I got a dot card from them, and loved the pearl colors. I think I will go with finetec for the gold colors just because of cost. But I love Schmincke metal pans!!

    • @HajraMeeks
      @HajraMeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're very welcome! Yes, the Finetec are great in the gold colors and cost less. I did get the Schmincke on sale for like 50% or more off, so it worked out ok for pricing but still a bit more than the Finetec.

    • @kataramommy
      @kataramommy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Argh, I was so sad to miss Jackson's sale. They are the only place to get Schmincke at a reasonable price for here in the States. I am desperate to try the Aqua Bronze but I can't find it here other than for astronomical prices and Jackson's can't ship it overseas. I might just have to bite the bullet and buy one bottle.

    • @HajraMeeks
      @HajraMeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, agree with you on all counts! The only way for me to get affordable Schmincke where I'm from in California is to buy from jacksons from the UK. Their Schmincke pans cost way less than buying them on dickblick or Amazon, and their shipping is also cheaper than those others. I just barely made it to this sale for these 18 pearl and metallic Schmincke paints and managed to get them for about $70. And yes, the aqua bronze doesn't ship overseas, don't know why, but the metallic gold and silver watercolor pans (you can buy them individually) are a great replacement since it's basically the same metallic formulas in a pan but they cost less.

      Thanks so much! Yeah, I am all aflutter with ideas for these. The typical accents and background colors are exactly how I have used metallic colors in the past, but the pearly pigment colors from Schmincke open up new possibilities for painting full pieces in pearly, candy colors!

    Can I ask what the name of the Schminke set was that you used in the video? I didn't realize they offered a half pan set with pearlescent/metallic water colors! I just got my first set of Schminke (the latest special edition and absolutely love them, as you said, just the smallest amount is needed and it goes on so smoothly).

    I really like how descriptive you were about your thoughts, though I think that you should give the rainbow finetecs a try, since they are more metallic and less a watercolor with silver sparkles. The set you chose also has a "theme" that makes the colors easier to use together, so some of the colors would look too similar.

    • @HajraMeeks
      @HajraMeeks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the rainbow finetecs are probably the best metallic colors out there--as you say, pure metallic mica and not just watercolor pigments with iridescent sparkle. But, I don't use metallic colors too often nowadays, and also don't work on black paper much, either, so I probably won't be buying any more metallics for a while. But whenever I do, I agree with you--the rainbow finetecs will be at the top of my list!

    Oh ya schminke’s Metallics are smooth and not patchy like Finetec or Gansai. I do actually really like the smaller pan finetec palette. I did a painting for my daughter of a mermaid tail and to prepare I did a grisaille with black waterproof permanent marker and black ink that doesn’t rewet. I used a duochrome paint from Daniel smith and having the white, gray scale and black to paint over the effect was stunning!!!! One paint tube and very little time considering the results once it fully dried! Maybe a video tutorial to share the fun since I learned the grisaille technique from you and your new schminke goodies! I’d like to see what those bad boys in action a bit more! Hope you’re doing great! Take care!

    • @erins.5420

      I have more metallic or duochrome watercolors than I care to admit. I am terrible at using them since I don’t normally carry them in my palette. But since the mermaid tail I’ve had some sweet ideas with botanicals, patterns found in nature and Mandela’s just to name a few.

      yes, I am the same--I have metallics and pearlescents and don't use them--I am going to try to incorporate them more in my own work as well--I like them for backgrounds and accents, just have to remember to pull them out! Your nature patterns and mandalas sound like a lot of fun!

      i either coat over metallic watercolor with clear acrylic medium or mix it into it while wet--this will make it permanent and eliminate flaking. :)

    If you like shimmery watercolors you should try out the luminescent Daniel Smith watercolors! They have a range of 48 colors, with iridescent, pearlescent, interference and duochrome colors. I personally like the duochromes the most, as some shift between different colors. Daniel Smith watercolors are quite pricey though.-.

    Thanks for sharing, Hajra! My handmade metallic, shimmer, and shift colors will be here this morning. I made a custom order to Designs By RachelBeth, and I ham super excited! 11 half pans! Very reasonably priced, too. well, it's watercolor, so I consider 60.00 fair. Schminke is like a no way for me. It is doubtful that I will own more than the 1 I have in Helio Turquoise. I think Schminke are great, but just too pricey for me. Maybe a dot card and a plan someday. Have a great day dearie!

      will try to Navigate and put up swatches tomorrow. I love the watercolors, so rich and hand-poured, lol. My White Nights 36 set is honey based and hand poured also. I am going to buy a cake of ox gall though, they can really lack movement. Beyond that, they are really nice, and I have a growing number of watercolor sets. I have not enjoyed the Sennelier as I thought I would-give them more time. I just got a light pad too to help me to get right to paining, and keep my drawings to do over and over.If I had known I could have those for 70- I would have jumped. I love my metallics-not much in the way of ideas to use them yet. Tomorrow is another day ;-)

      TerrieJ DimestoreDivaTV I had the same issue with sennelier! But I gave it more time and worked with them slightly differently. I worked in more layers and used different consistencies from watery, milky and gloopy. The rich color from layers sennelier gives makes them number one in my book for that process of painting. However DSmith is still in equal standing with schminke, mGraham and sennelier. I can’t decide between the four and love them for different reasons and some pigments are made better or have better pay out than any other brand. Thank goodness the four mix well together!!!

I find myself finding some things too precious to use-silly!

    The Schminche Pearlescent colors and the particular colors you chose from Finetec aren’t really comparable as a majority of them are iridescent colors
    Iridescent colors are made to be glazed over other colors or as a subtle accent and are more transparent while Pearlescent colors are more comparable to traditional metallics, stand up as their own color, and are made to be more opaque
    Finetec does make actual Pearlescent colors though and I would really love to see that comparison

    • @HajraMeeks
      @HajraMeeks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I agree, there were some comparables here, mostly with the golds and silvers, but the pearlescents vs the iridescents weren't an equal product comparison.

    Hi Hajra! I bought some Finetec paints that came in metal containers; the round paint containers fit in them (pop on) so they are refillable. I'm guessing the ones you have will also fit. It was a really strange compairson to me and two completely different types of watercolors with different purposes.
    You should know that you are using 2 different types of Pearlcolors in this Set of 12 from Coliro and that they are supposed to behave like this on white vs black for special highlights and light effects. It's a special feature these colors have. You can buy maaaany colors from coliro as opaque colors if you want a blue or a green that's opaque, no problem! They will jump right into your face.
    There are 6 shimmer colors, the ones that do this magic thing on black and 4 opaque colors in this set. Nevertheless both are supposed to use after they're wet and sat for 3 minutes and you'll get an creamy, opaque color. If you don't want them to be opaque than you will probably just wait one minute. They just use pigments and gum arabic, that's why they need time to dissolve.

    • @HajraMeeks
      @HajraMeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, I am aware of this--the finetec/coliro folks describe how the sheer pearl colors don't show much on white paper on their website. However, lots of people may not read that, and it's nice to swatch and see the color surprises on black vs white paper ourselves and share with others. I also know that Coliro makes various new sets of opaque metallics in spectral colors, also from their website. And I don't think it's strange at all what I compared--there are differences between pearlescents and metallics from various brands and I am just comparing the brands that I have.

    • @Tippel3
      @Tippel3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then I got it wrong.
      To me it seemed as a negative assessment/rating because of false expectations.
      I also think the swatches are very interesting and helpful for many people, but that there are two different kinds of colors in this one set and that they are supposed to look/behave like that, didn't came across.
      That's why it felt strange for me. It's nothing wrong with comparing different kinds of materials to figure out what is the best one for the personal or individual techniques, but one can't expect things that are not supposed to be or opposite.
      I rewatched it and still got it that way. I'm really sorry when I get this wrong. In this case please just take it as a feedback for your new videos in the future, how easy/likely or unlikely it is understand what you want to express.

    • @HajraMeeks
      @HajraMeeks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kei Ner well, i like both the schmincke and the finetecs, and will keep and use both. I just emphasized that schmincke shows up on white better due to pigment load, and that might suit my majority audience-watercolorists- better. I do calligraphy and decorative painting as well, but I don’t know how many of my viewers do, so i was speaking mostly to watercolor artists when addressing schmincke pigment load and glazing properties.

    • @Tippel3
      @Tippel3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand what you mean but it's just half the truth.
      Depending on what pigment you're talking about, the iridescent or the color, one of them will end up with just a few or no pigments.
      The pigment load in general in the Finetec is higher! It's pure mica with as much gum arabic as needed and as less as possible, to create a color block. You can't have much more pigments in a hard color.
      Schmincke uses 2 different types but has less pigments each. They use their usual color pigments and mediums and add irisdescent pigments or maybe exchange partially, depending on the color. In theory (thought experiment) you could take out the iridescent pigments and would still have a non-iridescent color to use. If you would do it with the Finetec, you would end up without any color. But that's why the Schmincke colors have a glazing effect, instead of the pure, opaque mica in the Finetec. You can thin them down but they will still not have an glazing effect, you would need to add a glazing medium to achieve that.
      I completely agree that the "non-opacity" but especially the glazing effect is what distinguishes watercolors from other mediums and makes it the outstanding medium it is. But who would buy an opaque color if one want's this effect? It's obviously, without explanation, the opposite. It's not possible to have both characteristics.

    • @Tippel3
      @Tippel3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But to be fair I have to say, even if it's obvious for the Finetec colors, that I don't know other languages that call this medium just "watercolor" and no other where so many people seem confused about this term. Because gouache, tempera, acrylics etc are all
      watercolors but I never heard a special term for colors like your Schmincke. Maybe that's a problem in the englisch language and people don't know how to differ and end up with something unwanted?
      f.e. in german the Finetec are "Wasserfarben" (watercolors) and colors as the ones from Schminke are "Aquarellfarben". Even without reading the description, no one would think that the Finetec colors share any characteristics with the Schmincke ones, except that they are watersoluble or waterbased. And they don't share the characteristics.
      In fact, they are more likely a dry Gouache, if you would want to place them somewhere in the different types of "watercolor". That's why it's so popular for calligrafie, I don't know anyone and don't think many people actually do use watercolors ("Aquarellfarben") for calligrafie, it just doesn't make sense.
      ad hoc without research, I count at least 4 terms more, that exist and are used in the german language to differ between different kinds of "watercolors" plus Gouache, Tempera, Acryl..... and as far as I know none of them has a existing or used translation. The englisch language just calls them all "watercolor" and you need to read or check out what they really are.

      XD You know I typically speak really fast, so no one has ever told me that, but I guess I slow down and quiet down more during actual painting.

    It’s 60 bucks for 6 half pans from schmincke and only $30 for the finetec which was a little bit better than schmincke anyway. Good review but I would say a bit biased. Like half the price for more and slightly better paints. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

      Actually I think I mostly agree with you. I think the Finetecs work better on dark paper so that makes them more of what people are wanting and expecting from metallics. And the Schmincke's are pretty pricey, which is worth it to me for their non-shimmery colors, but not so much with these shimmery ones.

      @@HajraMeeks yeah I'd say for their colored metallic ones it might be worth , although finetec also has lots of new color metallic ones but I'm not sure how they would compare to the schmincke

      If you're planning on getting schmincke I would recommend buying on Taobao with an agent. If you use a coupon the 18 colored set cost a little over 80. It's like 1.5x to 2x in America. I totally agree with you on the finetec though, you make a good point 👍
