Artsy Metallic 24 Pan Watercolor Set Review

  • Today we are going to review the brand new set of 24 metallic watercolor paints by Artsy available on Amazon (affiliate links used) amzn.to/38MJVq3 *there is an extra 10% off coupon on this product at the time of recording making it an even better deal.
This paint set comes in an attractive aqua blue tin wrapped in a soft cloth. The outer packaging is a sturdy cardboard box you can reuse. This would be pretty as a gift as it looks very high end much like the Paul Rubens paint sets I have reviewed in the past for 25% less money. Each pan is wrapped in a mylar wrapper that lists its color number. I recommend writing that number on the pan so you will know what color is what when you swatch. I did not do this and I could not match the colors on the swatch card afterward. It's not a really big deal but when I wanted to compare it to colors of the same number in another set I had a hard time matching them up.
    Pros:
*Price ($10 cheaper than the paul rubens set and there is an additional 10% off coupon at time of recording)
    *Nice color selection
    *Rewets easily
*Opaque on black (colors look different on black or white so be sure to swatch)
*Beautiful metal palette, high end packaging
    *Includes waterbrush
    Cons:
*The order of the swatch sheet did not match the order of paint in the palette. See note about labeling your pans as you unwrap them.
*Some colors appeared identical on black, two greens show up as gold on black and one green looks silver. Although there are 3 greens no of them look green on black which is a shame because if you like to use metallics for Christmas projects on black you are limited. I think the green colorant must be transparent so when mixed with the mica you only see the metallic pigments. It is pretty on white tho.
I felt obligated to compare this to the Paul Ruben metallic watercolor paint set amzn.to/36H3KNJ to see if they were the same as they are packaged and presented so similarily. I had reviewed them in the past and they turned out to be my favorite paints (although more expensive than most) see full comparison here. I will update this post with Artsy later: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.co... All but 2 color numbers were the same between sets however I found the paints in the PR set to be more glittery and a shade more translucent and the Artsy paint to be more opaque and satiny like a metallic gouache. It may be the more glitter colors were the ones not in the Artsy kit but overall the sheen was different. Also the palette was a different body (you can fit a row of pans down the center of the PR palette but not Artsy) and the pan shape was different. The Artsy set is $10 cheaper thou and the quality difference is pretty small to the effect that If I didn't compare them side by side I would have thought the artsy paints were the same.
Bottom line: the packaging and attractive tin, as well as beautiful quality paint, make this set a nice gift. I wish the greens showed true on black as I mostly use metallic watercolors on black and 8 of the colors show up as gold on black. If you plan on mainly painting on white paper these are lovely and jewel-toned similar to Twinkling H2Os. The shimmer shows well on white and often with metallics the shimmer is not that apparent on white. I would recommend these to cardmakers and painters manly working on white or gouache users because you can underpaint green in areas if need be. The tin is so pretty it begs ti be reused long after the paint is used up. I think it is a good value for the price.

Confession: I loved the box and tin of the Paul Rubens so much, I bought the regular set just to take out everything and put in my preferred watercolors.

I got the metallic set so I could keep my add-on tin to the 24 normal set in the box. XD

I didn't know the Paul Rubbens brand and I will definitely get one set, thank you for the comparison ;) It looks like the PR have pans that contains more paint. The thickness of the pan from the Artsy look bigger and the V shape is also reducing the quantity.

I just bought a bunch of glitter and metallic markers. Those Artsy paints look interesting; I do have some Daniel Smith paints that are shimmery enough that when I did a painting of the a goldfish, the fish seemed to glimmer. I will consider these paints at a future time. Thanks for the review. You gave a lot of information in less than 15 minutes. Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas! Your reviews are awesome, but YOU are AMAZING! My family is used to me referencing you.
I want to share a Christmas card achievement. I used the Sizzix fold along snowflake die for some of my cards. My mother bought a floating frame and framed hers. I give most of the credit to Sizzix, but I did put the half snowflake on my scan n cut and cut it as a silhouette. That, in a darkish blue, became the background for the gold glitter paper snowflakes.

Thank you for doing this, when I saw them I just assumed they were a re-packaged paul rubens and wasn't sure there would be any differences. I noticed that the "superior" brand also put out a set that looks the same at a glance too. I got the superior version of the 48 set because it was so much cheaper than paul rubens, but I'd be shocked if they are as good either!

    Thank you Lindsay! Merry Christmas!
I was tempted to order these (that little watercolor “I’ve got to have those“ itch was going full blast LOL) and I’m glad I didn’t.
I must confess that my absolute preference is for Finetec/Coliro and I’m slowly building my collection as I find them on sale here and there. But the absolute best, easily available, in my opinion, are from Hobby Lobby. I think I heard those are made by Prima?? They are lovely and last forever, $20 for 24, 40% off coupon, equals deal.
I did however order the Pretty Excellent watercolors and I’m VERY happy with those. Making my cards this year I didn’t feel guilty about using my “good“ watercolors, tho what are they here for I ask myself 🤔😇. Pretty Excellent are pretty darn good. I wish the tray had a fold out mixing part, but I got them for $16 on sale on Amazon so it’s a win in all columns. Plus, I believe I figured out a way to reuse the tray for mass storage of half pans. Or full pans. That’s a project for the future :-).
Thanks for this review! You saved me some change!
    Merry Christmas!

I don't know about when you did this review what the price comparison was but in UK just now a set of 48 PR pans is more than double the price of the Artsy ones, are they truly worth twice the price? its really weird with all these brands - antek art uses the exact same product pictures on their 12 pan metallic set as the paul rubens 12 pan set - but paul rubens is 30€ more expensive. feels like scam...

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  ปีที่แล้ว

I think they copy the layout because it is popular. Paul rubens is more reflective than artsy/superior but whether they are worth the extra cost is up to you.
