  • Paul Rubens Review Part 1: Standard Watercolor set of 24 amzn.to/2PoWIEg
    In this review we will take a look at the Paul Rubens watercolor set of 24. I will be comparing them to the "Pretty Excellent: set of watercolors I reviewed a few weeks ago: amzn.to/2QkJxJW
    *I also posed a review of the glitter paul rubens watercolors on my youtube channel today.
    BTW here are the swatching stamps: shrsl.com/15rqd
    This set of watercolors were sent to me for free by LightWish on Amazon and they sell for $38.99 amzn.to/2PoWIEg *Note a set of 12 is also offered for $25.99 in similar packaging.
    Pros:
    Beautiful colors that all unique making a useful palette
    Pigment info is provided and most colors are single pigment and use tried and true pigments
    The packaging is high end and beautiful (perfect for gift giving)
    The paints rewet well and have a smooth and consistent application
    Good price for artist grade
    Cons:
    The pink packaging may not appeal to all customers
    Bottom line:
    These a beautiful high quality paint and the high end packaging and reusable palette make it a beautiful gift or a craft room staple HOWEVER I think the Pretty Excellent paints are just as good if not more transparent and vivid and you get 36 for $20 in the pretty excellent set vs 24 for $39 in the Paul rubens palette. They don't disclose the pigment info in the pretty excellent set but many of the colors looked identical but that could be that the cheaper colors were in that set while the more expensive colors were in the PR set. also the packaging obviously is more high end and expensive and I think that accounts for the price difference.
    As for the paul rubens paper it is fantastic, as good as Arches for half the price. amzn.to/2E9sO4L

    I live in China. I see these paints all the time. I also buy their tubes to replace common pigments I use. This brand has been around for a few years already. The lightfastness seems standard, meaning you can trust their ratings. They have some special earth tones made with minerals which I can't find in other brands, similar to the idea of DS primatek line. The standard tube size is 20+ ml or something for less than a DS tube here. Their quality is really really good for the price. I am someone who use Sennelier paints 90% of the time, PB has some paints which are even more vibrant than Sennelier's. Also, in China, they sell the same sets that have navy and baby blue boxes. Their house brand paper is team up with a big artist paper company here, called Baohong. I use their 100% cotton papers all the time, and prefer them over Arches.

      Can you film a comparison or a review? China is really starting to go global with their art materials. I saw the Miya brand and their travel watercolor set seemed adorable with the capsule doubling as water pot/holder

    When I asked a seller in China I was told the Pretty Excellent was the "student" set. I assumed this meant that the pigment load was less, and they only had the cheaper paints (series 1) in the selection, similar to like Cotman vs Winsor and Newton's Professional line. I'll have to give these another look and some lightfast testing comparisons though, it would be really cool if they do not have any dye brighteners. If the Pretty Ex. set is lightfast it will truly be the deal of the year for everyone, as the paints really work beautifully for professional level art. Thanks for your comparison!

      I bought the Pretty Excellent set a while ago and it is all that and a bag o" chips. In other words, it is almost indiscernible from my Schmincke and Daniel Smith sets. It is a good buy. Whether it fades faster than normal I cannot say.

      have you done the lightfast testing yet?

    • @SuicideJade
      @SuicideJade 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      KeyLimeInk did a 6month light fast test of the pretty excellent watercolors and only 4 had barely perceptible shifts. Like so subtle that you had to struggle to see it. Definitely the deal of the century

    Thanks Lindsay. I have the pretty excellent set on the way. I wanted those reds. I think the cheapo ones are brighter too. Being on a very limited budget ; getting the cheap ones let me get paper too. Tough choices, but I don't think the landlord would appreciate me painting on the walls. 🤣🤣😘

    Yay!!!! Finally a review on the Paul Rubens palette. I got these ages ago for almost sentimental reasons -. My brother whom I miss dearly is named Reuben! I only found out later that Paul Rubens was actually a famous artist. Oh and I cannot deny my 'sickness' for art Supplies lol and ya ya, I got caught by the gorgeous packaging! Even though I know it doesn't always equate to quality.
    I also fell in love with many of the swatch images on amazon especially Prussian blue and sap and pthyalo greens or similar I think. I did have an idea that these paints may not flow quite as well as others because one retailer was selling them as gouache (which they aren't), but also because one other brief comparison noted that, in being eastern watercolour they would perform more like the eastern style Gansai paints, of which I have many including the metallics, jewels etc, as compared to western style watercolours which perform slightly differently and are sometimes more opaque too. However details were scant.
    The irony of it all, in my hunt to get these, as they are quite pricey here and when I finally did have the money, the amazonUSmarket was closed off to Australia ..... ahhhh. I never thought I'd see them again especially given lack of reviews around but Lo and behold, the relatively new amazon Australia stocked them earlier this year. Could not believe it! So yup, into my cart, wallet unhappy, I finally got them! Wahoo. But alas.(not a pity party, but oh dear, what a exasperating humorous chase to use these paints I'd not heard of before!!) ... I have an incurable illness and suffered a relapse, so I could only 'pat' and admire the beautiful tin, packaging and paint swatches, hoping they would be good paints. I had no idea if they were student or artist quality either. But oh yay, they're artist as far as I can tell and even if quality student grade, the price is great compared to the higher end we traditionally know of such as W&N Cotman....
    I'm becoming a palette addict, all starting with a cheap kid's cake chalky plastic set from a stationery store (probably a private label of the artist Loft round cakes, though I did find some similar styles iridescent ones which are surprisingly comparable to the expensive kuretake and Fine tech metallics bit with more colours). Ok. Definitely not artist quality but great for touch ups and cards etc.
    So now in my continuous upgrades to one day getting THE high quality artist grades outside my price at the moment, I'm saving for the Paul Rubens glitter ones too (oh, hang on, better look at your review on those first too lol :P ... going to try making my own as well from yours and others' DIYs :)
    So, thank you thank you for this review!!! I'm feeling inspired and will find the energy to actually use them ... What?! You mean actually use my Art Supplies?? Hehe 😂 sorry! If they do run out quickly and difficult to replace, am also definitely now interested in the Pretty Excellent paints too based on your comparison. Can't wait, and hope that the Paul Rubens tubes will become available too 😊
    Thanks again. Been a silent watcher of your videos for a long time and you're a beautiful, genuine, wonderful teacher so full of passion and inspiration in addition to fantastic knowledge and skill, talent and such joyful energy. Thank you for so many reasons and bringing some positive energy and creativity into my 'bumpy' life and so many other people's worlds :) (sorry for long comment, it's nice to be excited during difficult times) xx

    I find that even though I have m.graham , Daniel Smith, and Schminke watercolors, I use my cheaper student grade watercolors more (cotman, Jane Davenport, sonnet). Haha, less pressure on me not ‘wasting’ good supplies. I love your reviews but always have to remind myself that I already have too many paints and do not need to buy more. Still I love learning about new brands. Thank you for sharing your finds and expert opinions!

    Lindsay I really enjoy every painting, review and tutorial that you have done. And I could listen to you talk all day long. When I watch your you tube channel, I really feel like I'm sitting right next to you : ) enjoying your conversations and having a cup of coffee with you, or even tea for me some times : ) !!!!! I just wanted to let you know your my biggest mentor and so thankful for the time that you give to all of us that live in our Beautiful World. Oh and also when I first started up painting again after all these years I couldn't get Winsor & Newton Cotman or Daniel Smith water color paints. So, I started out with Lukas Professional Watercolor Paints and I really do like them. I don't have anything bad to say about them, But now I've been able to buy a couple of the other brands so that I can teach 3 of my 29 grandchildren how to paint with the best in my heart watercolors ; )I do like Paul Rubens Watercolor paints and I also love them : ) Lindsay Please don't ever stop teacher the world how to paint because I'd be really bored ; ) Sending all my Love and Blessings to you and your family

    I bought the Pretty Excellent set after your review of them. So happy with them. Am very glad you did this side by side review. I was just commenting to another you tuber the other day about your comment of how you thought they were similar to the Paul Rubens. People seemed skeptical about my comment. So you just justified my comment. So a big THANK YOU for that. LOL You also saved me a good chunk of change. I have learned a lot from you. Thanks so much for all you do. TFS

    "It's all a lot of fun... I've got a problem." Legit lol'd... From one palette hoarder to another, I can relate. I've had these for a couple months now (the pink palette), and am juuuuuust getting to use them now. They certainly move around less than other paints I have (QOR it ain't)... sometimes it's nice to just have the paint stay where you put it. The packaging knocked my socks off, and the paint is better than decent. Overall I'm happy with the purchase, and like working with something that isn't so dear price-wise. It's great to practice with when I'm not out to make a masterpiece, but still want quality.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      absolutely! These don't move as much because they do not contain oxgall, they are very similar to Holbein. QOR has a synthetic oxgal plus their bnder is lighter, I really like those too!

    I am happy here! I likened these to Shcminke, myself. So affordable for us in the USA, but the opacity might turn some away. It does noot bother me. I got the 48 half pan set, i was going to get the 24 set but i saw that there was a PB17 in the 48 half pan set. I read about PB17 peacock blue being discontinued in holbein so i was really interested to try it out. It's a really nice colour but not so unique that other existing colours don't come close. The olive green is also very similar to Daniel smith Sepentine green, a reddish brown colour separates out of it. I used to think that colours with more than one pigment should be avoided but i find them great once you learn how the behave.

  • @melstampz
    @melstampz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I bought loads of Daniel Smith paints (which are undoubtedly excellent) but I find that I'm more likely to use these because they're cost effective and less granulating. I still love the Daniel Smith watercolours but these really are lovely and bright. Thanks for your review!

    I have bought Tins and palettes for the palette, planning on just throwing the paint away or giving it to a niece of nephew. I will never buy all the colors over at DaVinci Paints but I have purchased quite a few, more than enough paint to last quite some time! I did recently buy the new neutral shade as I wanted to see if I could avoid using up my paints to mix my grey or for shading colors. I find that I use up my Ultramarine Blue faster than any other color! Sweet review Lindsay. I keep watching videos from your video library, Wonderful review videos and so complete too, Excellent catalog!

    My local art store had a huge sale last month and over the 2 day weekend sale, I bought 27 tubes of paint, mostly Daniel Smith, M Graham, and one tube of Qor. I have so much student grade paint that I have decided to only buy artist grade paints going forward. So stop tempting me!!! Lol ;) Seriously, I have to keep reminding myself to prioritize, and stick to it. I am now starting to explore different papers, and I have also gotten some really nice watercolor sketchbooks, which I love. Especially the Pentel and my Stillman and Birns. So thanks for another great review, very interesting, and in ten years when I run out of my Koi, Cotmans, that cute wand, rotating thingie that you painted with on vacation this summer, etc, then I know what I will replace them with. BTW, that White Nights Russian Green is PG8. Thanks, love watching you paint anything, and happy holidays.

    I bought these the other day from the UK amazon site along with the Paul Rubens watercolour block. I had them in my basket for a few days while deciding whether to go for them or not. In the end I thought why not? I got 5% off the paints. I have unwrapped them on but I have yet to do the swatch. I didn't keep the wrappers as the writing on them was too small for me to read.

      you can purchase synthetic oxgall from Qor (the real stuff is available from winsor & Newton but it smells LOL) and add it to your clean mixing water pot. Just a few drops in your clean water, it doesn't take much for flow!

    Hi! Thank you for your review! I’m trying to invest on an artist level watercolor set. I’m between White Nights and Paul Rubens. Can’t decide 🤦‍♂️ I have the Kuretake Gansai Tambi which performs amazingly to Bible Journal and card making; however, they suck on watercolor paper (canson 300). I’m trying to get a set that is gonna be easy for me to blend as I want to learn painting like Children’s books type of drawing. I’m not into landscaping/scenery style lol. I’m sorry to bombard you with all these but I know you are an expert, and I thought that knowing the reason and type of things I wanna do with them would give you a better chance to recommend the best set for my needs. I do have the Paul Rubens glitter set and it’s absolutely amazing! Thank you so much! Hugs and blessings from Miami.

    Thank you Lindsay for the beautiful review on the two different paint sets! I'm a guy but I went for the Paul Reubens because I like the better paint tin! Does the color pink bother me no not at all! And if it does in the future I I will just paint a breast cancer awareness ribbon on it and show my support! I did Swatch out the colors and I really do like them! I have one question for you though, what do I do when I use up all the paint? I am a beginner! Do they sell paint by The Tubes?

      They do but currently it is only available in China but I heard they are importing it to the USA in 2019 and from what I see the prices are very low with tubes $2-$4 depending on pigments. I am hoping they are easy to get, they have been compared to holbein as they have no oxgal and I can see the similarities.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      it aids in flow and dispersion so if you touch paint to wet paper it wooshes off you brush and travels far. You can add a few drops of ox gall to your clean rinse water as well. Qor makes a synthetic version. It works by reducing the surface tension of water. It is used in detergent as well.

  • @karenkessin4135
    @karenkessin4135 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Lindsay, I have a set of the Paul Rubens that caught my attention on aliexpress about a year ago. At that time the paints came in a navy blue metal case. Like you, I was impressed with their vibrancy and also with the fact that most of the colors in the set were single pigment. My one concern (aside from lightfastness, which I haven't tested) was that the paints in my set dried to a very coarse and sandy surface. I would not use my best brushes on these paints and I would always spray them down and give them time to absorb some water before I used them. Have you noticed anything similar? Perhaps the current version of the paints are being more finely milled? Thanks for all the time you spend on your very helpful reviews!

      These are a higher quality (better pigments and more transparent) and they wear slowly. These will act differently that prima because prima has a lot of dispersing agent and Paul ruben s dosnt have of gal so it's more like Holbein or a lower of gall paint like schminke.

    Hey Lindsey, what would you say is something you could take with you traveling for good water cup? Or do you suggest just using water brush instead for traveling? Is there a good travel water. Up you have or have seen? Since you have given us a good video with great gifts under $25 that also travel great. How about adding to that video with another one that addresses what you would use, a water brush with bottle of water to refill and towel to clean it as you change colors or some other better way and show us those.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I recommend a water brush if you are going to be confined to a bus or plane but if I know I will have a bit more space I use my portable painter palette as the water cups close one the palette. The portable painter is around $30 and you can fill it with the paint you like. I am going to add a $50 and under gift list to my blog post tonight as I was asked and this well make the list. Most waterbrushes are good these days so I will just tell you the 2 I don't recommend: niji and royal. I did a comparison water brush video on my channel a while back if you want to see.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      By the way it preforms (and I have no facts, just my experience using it) i would think it is certainly gelatin sized due to the crispness of the paper and the hardness of the sizing, just like arches which is anima sized. If it makes you any better cows are not killed for their bones to make gelatin, they are leftover and would just be wasted otherwise. A good vegan option is Fabriano Artistico.

      It would be good if they made the cards from their watercolor paper but the swatch cards are thinner and it might be an issue with printing. I know dot card makers couldn't use nice watercolor paper for some reason, I think the sizing affected the printing or something.
