They could’ve relatively easily killed him with some dignity. Would’ve been just fine if they wrote it to where he saw it coming and willingly walked into his death to save Ellie yet again, despite them beefing at the time. Would’ve made Ellie’s anger even more justified and made the player emotionally invested. I don’t think players were invested, because anyone old enough to play the game knew revenge wouldn’t bring Joel back. Don’t need a full length game to reiterate a cliche (the cycle of revenge is meaningless). As for playing as the main character’s killer, it was more pretentiously artistic than actually designed to make the video game more enjoyable for the player. I wasn’t like “oh wow, playing as the enemy is fun!” You just wanted to see where the story goes so you can get back to Ellie. At this point, I see part 3 ending with a rat king pulling Ellie’s head and spine out then it cuts to black just to get a rise out of people and say that’s a mature way to end an apocalypse story. Why take us on an emotional ride when the main theme is going to be nihilistic? Intricacy isn’t always purposeful
@@stocksxbondage it's a darker narrative he's not going to go out with a bang like it's uncharted and you're missing the point of him not having dignity he was paying the price for choices he made and I think there is a genuine beauty about the way it was written as it is something we will never get again. As for a third game they could easily add more to the lore and world building and any number of perspectives can be shown. We already have some open conflicts I'd love to see covered.

I finally tried this out about a month ago, good old $5 bargain bins. Abby is ridiculous, especially early on. She's like a linebacker, or Bo Jackson steamrolling linebackers. What they did to Joel was so freaking dirty too, similar to how stupid they made Tyrion in GOT, but at least I knew it was coming. I think I played about 10 hours before tapping out.

I think it's very interesting actually. It shows how revenge is a fool's game. Yes I also hated playing as Abby for a while, but once they revealed that her father was Ellie's surgeon Joel killed, i was absolutely shocked. Besides at the end, if Ellie chose never to go back after Abby, then she would have died a horrible death in the rattler camp

The game is a pacing shitstate which destroys any chance of getting across the actual point of the story in any meaningful way. The issue for TLOU2 wasn’t the characters, it wasn’t Joel’s death, it wasn’t playing as Abby, it was the pacing.

Agreed. They slowly build up to a climax (Abby holding Ellie at gunpoint in the theatre) but then they break off that climax in a steep change of pace where now the player has to replay the 3 days they played as Ellie, but from another perspective. This isn’t necessarily a bad idea, what didn’t work for me though, was breaking the pace at that climactic point completely disassociated me emotionally from Abby and her storyline. Since instead of being interested and feeling involved in her character, I just wanted to get over her part of the game so that I could go back to Ellie’s story at that climax point. And after the Ellie vs. Abby fight, there’s another break off that starts a whole new arc with new enemies in a new location, all to lead to another climax that literally gives us nothing more that what we already had at the theatre fight. If only that Ellie let Abby go, where in the theatre, it was Abby that let Ellie go.
Glad I was able to get a refund for last of us 2 genuinely one of the worst games I ever played I'll be heading to game stop tomorrow to get last of us 1 remastered to attempt to wipe that shit stain that was last of us part 2 from my memory.

I remember I knew someone who argued that the twist of killing off Joel, was to subvert player expectations that he would end up headlining another series, like Drake in Uncharted. The problem is shock value ended up replacing solid storytelling. So much carnage in the game that doesn’t have the impact a sequel could’ve had, especially to the first game.
They coulda made still an epic part 2 with joe and ellie, and then maybe joel then die in part 3, as we would be twice as invested, but the way they killed him with a fuking golf club by a roid ranging tom boy was a slap in the face, you know the true talent left, such as bruce strayley, yes neil had a story, but without bruce i think neil woulda killed either the story or the gameplay, he even invented the movement of the infected and sounds, i still enjoyed the gameplay, but the story sucked more than a hoover

I'll never understand these abby sympathisers. Abby killed Joel because he killed her father. In the first game, Abby didn't exist and doctor got shot in the leg. Nothing lethal. They decided to kill off the doctor in this game instead of keeping him alive, gave a daughter, shown Joel as a bad guy here even though we all know why he did it and why he saved Ellie in the first game which why it made everyone fall in love with TLOU1 in the first place, gave a really nice character arc and created one of the most beloved father figure and gaming icon, Joel, only to kill off like that and the whole journey of the revenge doesn't end up in anything at all. No ending. Ellie gets fucked over for no reason while Abby having a plot armor that "wow strong female with trans child". The worst part of this game was how we are FORCED to play Abby's section, 10 hours of nothing, just a wasted mess. Instead, we could've gotten a story of continuing where we left off at TLOU1, how this town became to be, how Ellie and Joel grown as a character and maybe then kill off Joel and make Abby an actual bad guy to show us how strong Ellie is, hence give us that every game dev drolls for these days "Strong indepent women" figure with Ellie, show us her rage and her misery at the end when we visit Joel's grave. They completely missed a good story to push their Agenda, ruin a good ass game that could've been a franchise for MANY people and then told us if we don't like it then we are stupid. I never got disappointed this hard for a game that I was looking forward to. And I'll make sure to never get something that includes TLOU so maybe I won't remember this fuck up of a gaming history.

Say what you want about how bad part 2 was, I don't like what they did to Joel either but I was more than thrilled to spend more time in that world and they followed it up great in my opinion, the fact it is compelling enough to split a fan base down the middle means that there is a clear vision for the world and that the world is brutal and unforgiving. They established that in the first hour of part one and part two. They made a world so beautiful and cold. They did exactly what he said and doubled down. Part 3 would be awesome, but I would hate for them to follow the same character arch. I feel like they could tell the story of the world from many characters perspectives, like Abbys father, Marlene, Tess, Tommy Etc. There are so many stories and emotions to explore with the world I really hope that people don't let the two games out leave a sour taste in their mouths because there is so much potential with the world and the way they made it, beautifully done all the way around I expect nothing less of Naughty Dog.
I don’t get why everyone always gets upset that he died. I do wonder if the leak didn’t happen, if people would have been able to accept it easier by experiencing the story first. He’s one of my favorite characters ever, but so was Rob Stark. Great characters die sometimes, especially when they do critical things that have consequences. In Joel’s case he killed 50+ fireflies who all had families and connections. The way Joel would go looking for them, they went looking for him. Was I happy to see him die? Absolutely not. I balled my eyes out. But was it realistic to the world and the story? Definitely.
Makes you wonder if he is really is a hack who weaselled his way and rode on the coat tails of better talent. I mean just look at how he finally had the wheel to the ship without anyone else to stop him when developing TLOU 2 and just look at how that turns out. Bruce Straley left after the TLOU1. Well now I understand why the TLOU2 was total shit. Druckman said in an interview that they were midway through the game and was in group meeting together and decided to change up the story last second to kill Joel. WORST FUCKING DECISION EVER.
Ehhh I call bullshit. Neil told Troy about having a story for part 2 and Joel's eventual fate when they were in London I believe, to receive awards for the first game at the BAFTAS. Troy himself has told this story in numerous interviews. I don't think they were "halfway" through development at this point. They probably were still in preproduction.
Lmao stfu. Druckmann told Ashley Johnson the story of Part 2 (an early version, sure, but it still included Joel's death) during the same dinner he pitched her the idea of Left Behind. And at the 2014 BAFTAs, he told Baker about the idea. So it wasn't changed at the last minute. It's a massive game. You can't just change something THIS MAJOR, this central to the story at the last minute.
I think joel dying was actually good. It made the series tbh and ik maybe walking dead game did it first but i like the concept of generational characters. We focus so much on certain characters they never age. Like batman for example. His storylines are actually the same shit from the beginning just by a different writer. And almost every single character in part 2 changes their whole mindset and isn’t focused on survival anymore, Tommy and Joel dropped their guard and told a random group of tough guys their location and invited them to that place. There are so many reasons why you shouldn’t trust anyone even if you’re living peacefully for 5 years. People still get infected around those areas, someone could’ve secretly been infected and lead back to Jackson and infected everyone. Let alone the possibility of people wanting to kill Joel after his past wrongdoings to them. Another stupid thing is how far Ellie and Tommy went to get revenge on Abby, for killing just one man. It’s not like Abby’s team slaughtered half of Jackson, so they should’ve just let things go and focused on their own survival, so unnecessary coming after Abby 100’s of miles away and a giant unknown militia, killing hundreds of people just to get to Abby. And on top of all these terrible decisions by the characters in the game, there’s the pacing of the story which is absolutely messy and barely satisfied any of the fans. It’s not that the story needed to be realistic, it’s just that the whole structure of it was so off. They could’ve changed the pacing of the game while making it the same exact story, so that the players are able to properly connect with characters like Abby. Even in films like no country for old men, where unexpected things happen in the film, it is such a great film because the whole structure is done right in a movie structure. Like how you’re gradually learning and getting involved in the story. The last of us 2 doesn’t do this at all. We’ve become so attached to a story, which we played so many hours of, and then a character who we don’t know jack shit about ruthlessly kills Joel.. and THEN, after getting all that hate towards her, we’re meant to see her side of the story. It doesn’t follow a proper structure which isn’t great story telling. Very forced, on top of all of the other forced ideas and agendas that were mostly political and had nothing to do with the game’s world, like how Abby a extremely muscular, which, being very unlikely, doesn’t really make sense because you’d need so much good maintanance of your body that requires so many vitamins, supplements and things that she won’t have access to in that world. I doubt there’s a 7 eleven nearby with all the protein shakes and what not that you need. And there’s the woke stuff that is spread all over the game that I won’t even get into. These are my honest views of the game, I am not intending to attack or hate, this is how I see the story and how the game is portrayed. Also, what I will say is that aside from those things I’ve mentioned, I won’t say it’s a bad story. Just very mediocre. And poorly written. And the gameplay is absolutely phenomenal, better then most games today. I’ve never seen environmental physics, the gore, and the player movement so smooth in a game before. The graphics are obviously amazing too, and all that is even better in the part 1 remake.
I hate that joel was killed off, don't get me wrong, but he was a bad person, he was a hunter for years just like the pittsburgh battalion who ambushed and killed innocent ppl and then joel became a smuggler. Its actually jerry's fault (abby's dad) cause the fireflies didnt even give joel and ellie a chance to explain that ellie needed to die for there to be a cure, and it wasnt even guaranteed. Jerry and the fireflies forced it onto them, and even when jerry pulled a knife on joel, he forced joel to kill him just to save ellie. Everyone hates abby but what if your dad was killed by a smuggler u didn't really know?? And abby's dad was the only family she had left. Wouldn't u be out for revenge? Jerry planted the seed for all the events to happen and joel made it worse.
To be fair. They did kill abbies father. Place yourself in her shoes. Even if you bond with ellie throughout the game, its not fair to dissmiss whatever happened to the innocent.

It’s so crazy because I thought I’d never admit it, but I’ve come around on part 2. It’s not as good as the first one, but it does have a cool story buried deep in there. The whole idea of how are we affected by grief and what can it make us do really is fascinating.

The issue that tlou part two has is that it does such a good job of making you feel exactly how it wants you to. It was too hard for pea brains to understand what they were doing and that they were doing it intentionally. The fact that you think Joel dying in “10 minutes” (not even close to true) is a good reason for the story being bad tells me that your analysis doesn’t go much further than “I wanted this from the story and didn’t get it”. At the beginning I was mad as well that they killed my man Joel. Didn't want to play the game after that, hated playing Abby but I actually got to like Abby more than Ellie. Never thought I would. It was great to see both sides of the story. In the End I totally enjoyed playing Part 2 even though I had to go through lots of emotions haha. But The Last Of Us Part 1 is still my favorite game I've ever played.

Don’t need a full length game to reiterate a cliche (the cycle of revenge is meaningless). As for playing as the main character’s killer, it was more pretentiously artistic than actually designed to make the video game more enjoyable for the player. I wasn’t like “oh wow, playing as the enemy is fun!” You just wanted to see where the story goes so you can get back to Ellie. At this point, I see part 3 ending with a rat king pulling Ellie’s head and spine out then it cuts to black just to get a rise out of people and say that’s a mature way to end an apocalypse story. Why take us on an emotional ride when the main theme is going to be nihilistic? Intricacy isn’t always purposeful

As for a third game they could easily add more to the lore and world building and any number of perspectives can be shown. We already have some open conflicts I'd love to see covered.

I finally tried this out about a month ago, good old $5 bargain bins. Abby is ridiculous, especially early on. She's like a linebacker, or Bo Jackson steamrolling linebackers. What they did to Joel was so freaking dirty too, similar to how stupid they made Tyrion in GOT, but at least I knew it was coming. I think I played about 10 hours before tapping out.

You're actually right, he did talk about these agendas and admitted publicly about relying on them and representing them heavily in his games, he got the original writers and visionaries fired and hijacked projects that weren't his and did all the things he said he would.
The game is a pacing shitstate which destroys any chance of getting across the actual point of the story in any meaningful way. The issue for TLOU2 wasn’t the characters, it wasn’t Joel’s death, it wasn’t playing as Abby, it was the pacing.
Yeah exactly, i feel the same. The pacing is absolutely awful, and it killed every enjoyement that I could’ve squeezed out of that game. I was ready to look past the shitty story if it wasn’t for the horrible pacing.
Agreed. They slowly build up to a climax (Abby holding Ellie at gunpoint in the theatre) but then they break off that climax in a steep change of pace where now the player has to replay the 3 days they played as Ellie, but from another perspective.
This isn’t necessarily a bad idea, what didn’t work for me though, was breaking the pace at that climactic point completely disassociated me emotionally from Abby and her storyline. Since instead of being interested and feeling involved in her character, I just wanted to get over her part of the game so that I could go back to Ellie’s story at that climax point.
And after the Ellie vs. Abby fight, there’s another break off that starts a whole new arc with new enemies in a new location, all to lead to another climax that literally gives us nothing more that what we already had at the theatre fight. If only that Ellie let Abby go, where in the theatre, it was Abby that let Ellie go.

I remember I knew someone who argued that the twist of killing off Joel, was to subvert player expectations that he would end up headlining another series, like Drake in Uncharted.
The problem is shock value ended up replacing solid storytelling. So much carnage in the game that doesn’t have the impact a sequel could’ve had, especially to the first game.

I'll never understand these abby sympathisers. Abby killed Joel because he killed her father. In the first game, Abby didn't exist and doctor got shot in the leg. Nothing lethal. They decided to kill off the doctor in this game instead of keeping him alive, gave a daughter, shown Joel as a bad guy here even though we all know why he did it and why he saved Ellie in the first game which why it made everyone fall in love with TLOU1 in the first place, gave a really nice character arc and created one of the most beloved father figure and gaming icon, Joel, only to kill off like that and the whole journey of the revenge doesn't end up in anything at all. No ending. Ellie gets fucked over for no reason while Abby having a plot armor that "wow strong female with trans child". The worst part of this game was how we are FORCED to play Abby's section, 10 hours of nothing, just a wasted mess. Instead, we could've gotten a story of continuing where we left off at TLOU1, how this town became to be, how Ellie and Joel grown as a character and maybe then kill off Joel and make Abby an actual bad guy to show us how strong Ellie is, hence give us that every game dev drolls for these days "Strong indepent women" figure with Ellie, show us her rage and her misery at the end when we visit Joel's grave.
They completely missed a good story to push their Agenda, ruin a good ass game that could've been a franchise for MANY people and then told us if we don't like it then we are stupid. I never got disappointed this hard for a game that I was looking forward to. And I'll make sure to never get something that includes TLOU so maybe I won't remember this fuck up of a gaming history.

Say what you want about how bad part 2 was, I don't like what they did to Joel either but I was more than thrilled to spend more time in that world and they followed it up great in my opinion, the fact it is compelling enough to split a fan base down the middle means that there is a clear vision for the world and that the world is brutal and unforgiving. They established that in the first hour of part one and part two. They made a world so beautiful and cold. They did exactly what he said and doubled down. Part 3 would be awesome, but I would hate for them to follow the same character arch. I feel like they could tell the story of the world from many characters perspectives, like Abbys father, Marlene, Tess, Tommy Etc. There are so many stories and emotions to explore with the world I really hope that people don't let the two games out leave a sour taste in their mouths because there is so much potential with the world and the way they made it, beautifully done all the way around I expect nothing less of Naughty Dog.
I don’t get why everyone always gets upset that he died. I do wonder if the leak didn’t happen, if people would have been able to accept it easier by experiencing the story first. He’s one of my favorite characters ever, but so was Rob Stark. Great characters die sometimes, especially when they do critical things that have consequences. In Joel’s case he killed 50+ fireflies who all had families and connections. The way Joel would go looking for them, they went looking for him. Was I happy to see him die? Absolutely not. I balled my eyes out. But was it realistic to the world and the story? Definitely.
Makes you wonder if he is really is a hack who weaselled his way and rode on the coat tails of better talent. I mean just look at how he finally had the wheel to the ship without anyone else to stop him when developing TLOU 2 and just look at how that turns out.

Ehhh I call bullshit. Neil told Troy about having a story for part 2 and Joel's eventual fate when they were in London I believe, to receive awards for the first game at the BAFTAS. Troy himself has told this story in numerous interviews. I don't think they were "halfway" through development at this point. They probably were still in preproduction.
Lmao stfu. Druckmann told Ashley Johnson the story of Part 2 (an early version, sure, but it still included Joel's death) during the same dinner he pitched her the idea of Left Behind. And at the 2014 BAFTAs, he told Baker about the idea.
So it wasn't changed at the last minute. It's a massive game. You can't just change something THIS MAJOR, this central to the story at the last minute.

@@andrewoldham3675yeah but have you ever looked at it this way; you could say it’s giving haters of the last of us what they want.. it was such an extreme coincidence the way Abby happened to have her life saved by Joel and lead him and Tommy back to their camp. And almost every single character in part 2 changes their whole mindset and isn’t focused on survival anymore, Tommy and Joel dropped their guard and told a random group of tough guys their location and invited them to that place. There are so many reasons why you shouldn’t trust anyone even if you’re living peacefully for 5 years. People still get infected around those areas, someone could’ve secretly been infected and lead back to Jackson and infected everyone. Let alone the possibility of people wanting to kill Joel after his past wrongdoings to them.
Another stupid thing is how far Ellie and Tommy went to get revenge on Abby, for killing just one man. It’s not like Abby’s team slaughtered half of Jackson, so they should’ve just let things go and focused on their own survival, so unnecessary coming after Abby 100’s of miles away and a giant unknown militia, killing hundreds of people just to get to Abby.
And on top of all these terrible decisions by the characters in the game, there’s the pacing of the story which is absolutely messy and barely satisfied any of the fans. It’s not that the story needed to be realistic, it’s just that the whole structure of it was so off. They could’ve changed the pacing of the game while making it the same exact story, so that the players are able to properly connect with characters like Abby. Even in films like no country for old men, where unexpected things happen in the film, it is such a great film because the whole structure is done right in a movie structure. Like how you’re gradually learning and getting involved in the story.
The last of us 2 doesn’t do this at all. We’ve become so attached to a story, which we played so many hours of, and then a character who we don’t know jack shit about ruthlessly kills Joel.. and THEN, after getting all that hate towards her, we’re meant to see her side of the story. It doesn’t follow a proper structure which isn’t great story telling. Very forced, on top of all of the other forced ideas and agendas that were mostly political and had nothing to do with the game’s world, like how Abby a extremely muscular, which, being very unlikely, doesn’t really make sense because you’d need so much good maintanance of your body that requires so many vitamins, supplements and things that she won’t have access to in that world. I doubt there’s a 7 eleven nearby with all the protein shakes and what not that you need. And there’s the woke stuff that is spread all over the game that I won’t even get into.
These are my honest views of the game, I am not intending to attack or hate, this is how I see the story and how the game is portrayed. Also, what I will say is that aside from those things I’ve mentioned, I won’t say it’s a bad story. Just very mediocre. And poorly written. And the gameplay is absolutely phenomenal, better then most games today. I’ve never seen environmental physics, the gore, and the player movement so smooth in a game before. The graphics are obviously amazing too, and all that is even better in the part 1 remake.

Jerry and the fireflies forced it onto them, and even when jerry pulled a knife on joel, he forced joel to kill him just to save ellie. Everyone hates abby but what if your dad was killed by a smuggler u didn't really know?? And abby's dad was the only family she had left. Wouldn't u be out for revenge? Jerry planted the seed for all the events to happen and joel made it worse.
So this Abby character should have understood that Jerry was an idiot.

It’s so crazy because I thought I’d never admit it, but I’ve come around on part 2. It’s not as good as the first one, but it does have a cool story buried deep in there. The whole idea of how are we affected by grief and what can it make us do really is fascinating.
People who dislike the game simply because 'they killed off their hero' don’t deserve responses. They fail to grasp the essentials of a compelling narrative. They merely desire a happy ending.These are the same people who harassed J.K. Rowling so she wouldn't kill Harry Potter. They got what they wanted: the ending of Harry Potter is crap.Thank you, Neil, for not succumbing to the easy path that 99% of studios/writers take to please people with shitty taste. Oh, and by wanting to make games that please everyone, you end up making games for no one. I'm thrilled that this one made the tough choice of not trying to please everyone.
Yes but you don't go totally against your costumer, if you want to sell horror games sell it to horror fans etc, don't sell one thing and then sell another thing pretending it's the same
@gaia7240 Poor thing, did you think TLOU 1 was a relaxing walk in the park? The horror elements in Part II are no worse than the first. It's all about telling a compelling story, not just catering to comfort.
@@MickaelKrebs lower your pretentiousness and you will understand what I mean, in the first game all the horror stuff wasn't fetishized like in the second one, in which it become so common it doesn't even affect you anymore, in that regard it stopped being horror and became comical
It really is not that good , If I knew, I was going to play Abby that long, I would have never of purchased it. Ellie is the character I most adored.
The last of us 2 is a horrible game, most of the people who likes the last of us 2 are people who never played the first game, it's trash a waste of money

The issue that tlou part two has is that it does such a good job of making you feel exactly how it wants you to. It was too hard for pea brains to understand what they were doing and that they were doing it intentionally. Still haven’t heard a decent reason why the story is bad and I’ve been looking for a while.
@lilseabass4595 Joel dies within 10 mins of the game, don't even get to play him other than ride the horse in the beginning, Tommy isn't himself, he wants to let it go and let Abby walk free and clear, ellie goes on a hunt for Abby and gets almost killed and saved in dumb ways during the process, then we play as Abby that nobody cares about and not interested (unless you haven't played part 1) in, it's flashbacks within flashbacks its boring, ellie kills Abby friends now Abby finds ellie almost kills her and Dina but lev convinces Abby to spare them so there goes another saved in a dumb way for ellie, then ultimately ellie finds Abby almost kills her and lev and ends up letting them go, that game is trash in every way, boring as hell

The fact that you think Joel dying in “10 minutes” (not even close to true) is a good reason for the story being bad tells me that your analysis doesn’t go much further than “I wanted this from the story and didn’t get it”. Which is fine if you just don’t like it, but that doesn’t make it bad writing. It’s not an untouchable masterpiece, but it is certainly not bad by any stretch of the imagination.
Just don’t have Abby in the 3 game. Give us a good story. Maybe do a story before the 1st game we’re you play as Joel before he meets Ellie

None understood the message that naughty dog wanted to give. Just people around think only about Joel (amazing character ok) but in this world nobody is an HERO. The revenge can be the worst thing and Ellie and Abby are exactly the example. The last of us 1 and 2 (expecially part 2) isn't for easy brain.
Of course they are the same if you totally change Ellie's personality... And the story wasn't that deep

The whole point of tlou is that there are no heroes or villains, everyone has lost their way after the outbreak, Joel wasn’t a good person and neither is Abby or Ellie
Need to rebuild the story of the tlou2 that joel is still alive. That the current tlou2 story is just happen in another universe.

At the beginning I was mad as well that they killed my man Joel. Didn't want to play the game after that, hated playing Abby but I actually got to like Abby more than Ellie. Never thought I would. It was great to see both sides of the story. In the End I totally enjoyed playing Part 2 even though I had to go through lots of emotions haha. But The Last Of Us Part 1 is still my favorite game I've ever played.
