Music nerds will spend hours talking about how bands have difficult second albums after a big hit.
Car companies like Cupra face the same problem; it had a huge hit with its first electric car, the Born and now it has to try and match the success.
The Tavascan is its comeback, and it is bigger and generally posher that the Born.
Does that mean it’s better?
It actually uses a lot of the same bits underneath as the Born and all sorts of other electric cars including the Skoda Enyaq, Volkswagen ID.4 and 5 and even the new Ford Explorer.
At 4,644mm long, the Tavascan is slightly longer than a Volkswagen ID.4 but marginally shorter than the best-selling Tesla Model Y. Cupra would probably prefer comparisons to posher rivals such as the BMW iX2.
It has a much sportier look than either though, as you’d expect from a Cupra, and has plenty of space of the family.
The Tavascan will be available with two power outputs. The lowest is a single motor rear drive with 286HP. This gives a range of around 355 miles from its 77kWh battery pack.
Drivers wanting more power can plump for a twin motor version that will have 340hp and all-wheel drive. This top version, called the VZ, can reach 62mph in 5.6 seconds and a range of around 326 miles from the same 77kWh battery pack.
Both versions can recharge at the same maximum of 135 kW, meaning a 10 to 80% charge takes just under half an hour using a suitable DC charging point. That’s nothing to write home about, and it less than the 185kW offered by other models in the VW range. Something like a Kia EV6 will be long gone by the time you’ve charged your Tavascan. The AC maximum has a disappointing 11kW maximum too.
Join Tom as he takes the new Tavascan on the road for the first time. Are you a fan? Has Cupra pitched its second release just right? Let us know in the comments below.
I'm tired of having to do math in my head of converting miles to kilometers. please just put the conversion on the screen in the edit, when you mention ranges and stuff. otherwise the content is great as always.
A uk review will always use miles, we don’t do kilometres that’s a continental Europe thing. Listen to their review s if you want km
@@danjackson140 Rather a rest of the world-thing (apart from US, Liberia and Belize). So in the spirit of inclusivity... should also report kms
"First Vw group car which has paddles to adjust regeneration" No it’s not. The Enyaq has paddles, had then in 2021 I think
Came to say the same thing.
You are correct
..so did the early E-tron and Q4 (sold in US)
Looked at the 2024 ford kuga a week ago I think it's inferior compared to other vehicles in it's class, Seems like ford have been the parts bin again nothing new about it.
So does the Audi eTron and Q8 Etron
Electrifying, Subscribed because your content is fantastic!
Cupra says 'Tavascan', my head says 'Gaviscon'. Godsdamnit.
@@alangravy27 😂 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Lol you need your head checking 😉
Heat pump an optional extra .. taking the proverbial at the asking price.
Thanks. Great review. Love Cupra 🔥
Not expecting anything spectacular from VW group in terms of electric cars... you just confirmed my feelings.
It looks spectacular nobody can deny it unlike those soap bar Tesla's
@@sunnyd6291 not talking about design... this part indeed is really nice, I can admit it... but from technical point of view, nothing, absolutly nothing spectacular
I'm just amazed they're still putting those awful haptic buttons in there, don't like that tiny dash screen either. Wouldn't be surprised if the infotainment system is the same with no phyiscal buttons but it was difficult to see really.
@@michaelhansen2309 Agree - it would be pretty spectacular if the VW group just dropped the almost-unusable haptic buttons!
@zych84 if you want looks like this and to be at the top technically you will need to pay alot more money it's a balancing act for manufacturers, you can't have everything in life even with unlimited money
Great review Tom, I love the look and don't mind the haptic buttons as I have owned a Born. Certainly put it above the VW ID range .
Yes not sure what VW are smoking when both the Seat and Skoda are superior to their own offerings
I have a soft spot for 'use your illusion'. Part 1 and 2 were the first 2 CDs I bought. The first album has been played to death, who really wants to hear 'sweet child of mine' again?
Had something to say about the car but I forgot what it was halfway through, 'civil war'.
Up the Zep!
My first response was, ahhh yes Spaghetti was a tragedy.... HANG on a minute?! How dare you!
I think Jedward’s second album, Victory, should have been a flop (I mean I am surprised they managed to get a first album, no accounting for taste) but to my surprise it went platinum! 🤔
The Cupra is a bit blingy for my tastes, however it is nice but would I want to own one? No, I would want something a bit more boring and functional I am afraid. But that is the beauty of car manufacturers, they build something for everyone's taste... Like the music industry catered for Jedward fans 😂 (Those eejits have 4 albums, can you believe it!)
The one thing that puts me off from Cupra's is all that copper inlay they have. It has zero appeal with me 8-((...
I agree... But would prefer over piano black any day
First VW EV with regen paddles? I think the Enyaq I tried in 2021 had paddles, not that they seemed to do much. I prefer BMW’s intelligent regen, and all anyone really needs is a full coast mode and full one-pedal.
You are correct, my Enyaq has paddles which I use a lot in D mode
Circa £50k for an average family saloon and a Cupra (£55k for the dual motor) - quite a premium for what is essentially an average family saloon which given current EV form (in the UK) probably means it will depreciate like a lead balloon. Shame because the cupra EV's have pretty good styling.
It's even worse for Spaniards, that feeling of having to pay 50K for what's basically a Seat... that hits hard
No it's a VW group car @@Luigi_Vaz
If you want the looks you gotta pay simple and all cars depreciate mostly.... electric car are expensive generally and there's no car in this category that looks anywhere as good
WhIch car in this category looks as premium as the Cupra?
Cupra is a premium brand and actually looks like a premium brand. It is not a SEAT.
@lollymanna Cupra cars are all show and no go, just like Hyundai Coupe II of the early 00's.
If it's designed and built by Seat employees at the Seat factory, it's a Seat.
Avoid like the plague!!!
I'm very interested in the Cupra Born VZ as a successor to my ID.3, Tavascan certainly looks dramatic!
Dramatic is the word! I can't put my finger on it, is it's cool or not? It seems nice in the front bar under the lights with that plastic cut out for the vents. Then the rear is huge! They got the design wrong with the rear, I think. Good luck with the Born Vz, that looks a great car
It definitely looks the part. I’d rather go Cupra than VW nowadays. P.S. I liked GnR’s 2nd album.
Basically my id5 with different interior and badging
No it drives better looks much better too
Car to X feature, where it comunicates to other cars about traffic, accidents I think is exciting, and as cars get bigger and parking spaces stay the same, I think remote parking/summoning I think will become standard, which I like too.
I really wouldn't like my car to talk to my ex behind my back telling her where I'm going. It would be down the cliff with my car thank you very much.
Do love the look of the Tavascan and the name. I will need to wait for Australian model reviews though to find out what Cupra have knobbled on it such as connectivity, charge schedules, app support, etc before knowing if it'll be a possible in future or not. Nice to see one of your reviews Tom at last.
Can't decide if upgrade from regular Born to Born VZ or to Tavascan, it looks amazing 🤩😍😍
Go for the Born VZ. There will be a video for that soon, but I loved it!
Get a proper EV, like a Model 3. It's way better in the software departement, and it handles like the Cupra wish it did.
I drive a 2013 diesel insignia.. 118k miles on the clock. It was given to me cos i cant afford to buy a car.. so when i see this car i can safely say everything about it is fucking amazing!.....
More reviews from Tom please.
I think Cupra's 2nd album is good - visually - but since I found out that the Born is coming as a VZ, I've been thinking about it a lot, because I actually don't need the larger Tavascan because of the space - but I think it's pretty I already have the car!
Huh. It's range beats mine with the same size battery pack. Not bad! I like Cupras, and wish we'd get them on this side of the pond.
I own and love my Cupra Born that’s fully spect out including the 77kw battery. I’m in Sydney Australia and I saw the Taverscan for the first time last week. Would I buy one, no I wouldn’t. I’m going to wait for a twin motor Born as the single motor VZ just doesn’t cut it for me either. Give me a twin motor all wheel drive Born and I’m all in. But for now I’m just loving my Born.
We need more information.. what packs are included and which are available in the uk. heated rear seats should be standard on top range model.strange review all other journalists of all nationalities have gave great reviews to this car so im a bit baffled with this review.my money was out now i still have my hands on it lol
47.300 is exactly what i was gonna pay for a new Skoda Enyaq 85 Sportline with some extras like heated rear seats and towbar. If thats the price for the entry level Tavascan, i´d say good luck selling that one. Especially considering the Xpeng G6 is out in a few months time for something like 42.500, with everything included. Only downside is no matrix LED headlights. 280kw charging and a bit more range even. Oh, and 7 year/100.000 miles warranty.
So the price was quite a bit lower. Im getting a top spec RWD for 44.000. Its really good and cheaper compared to the Enyaq that doesnt even get a panoramic roof as an option. Considered the Xpeng G6, but the service intervals and prices are insane, so in the end, with 20.000km/year, the Tavascan matches the G6 in TCO. And its a much better car. Better handling, looks way better (though personal preference), got HUD, adaptive lights and suspension and kick sensor for the trunk. Also Travel Assist is so much better than what the chinese cars offer. Also Cupra offers good insurance, cheaper than what i could get the G6 for. Comes standard here with 5 year/100.000km warranty, so not much worse than Xpeng.
All in all, this seems like a really good car in this segment.
I had been expecting this car review for quite a while. Less than 10 minutes for a very light check of the Tavascan is a bit disappointing. Please give us mooore as that is a car I would consider in the future.
Nice review. The screens seems like straight from ID4. For the paddles they have been available in Audi Q4 e-tron from the beginning
Thank you. That price though...
Have the born V3 and love it glitchy software aside. I like the look of this. Btw use your illusion 1 and 2 disappointing?
I thought “Ram” was a better 2nd album, following “McCartney”, but not by much. And after 8 or 9 years as a Beatle he was quite good by then… I do like the illuminated badge on the rear of this car!
Been looking forward to it but in the meantime after testing the Born I think Cupra just looks better than it really is, especially with this increasing price tag. Let’s see if the Raval will be better value for money for a Seat
It looks good the tail and head lights are smooth and not edgy it makes other brands look boring..
Queen 2, an over the top masterpiece, great potential on the first album and takes you to a magic fantasy land for an hour or so.Still nothing like it since.
Thank you for the review.
At the indicated price it just does not work for me. I could have so much more fun in something else and keep some change.
However if we are talking about disappointing second albums, then my greatest disappoint was Soft Machine 2, but I doubt anybody else remembers it.
Is the interior just as cheap / plastic / low quality as in the born or better?
Perhaps tone down the ambient lighting and use the money saved to put physical buttons on the steering wheel.
Lovely looking car, very expensive though as usual and out of my price range
This page is so much better for Tom Barnard.
Great Review 😊
Is ford a premium brand, I don't think is, That's what my motability specialist said it was. Rather have a skoda enyaq much better car compared to any of what ford have to offer
Did you say BZed? What ever happened to the GT??!
Cheers Tom
Can you get 3 adults in the back?
Surely things like heat pumps, heated seats and steering wheels should be standard on almost £50K cars especially if you want the private buyers to invest in EV's
I would rather have upgraded interior materials than those gaudy overdone ambient lighting.
Hello mate it seems a little like the new Polestar with the lighting inside the car but that could be me
That central spine must have been designed by a Star Trek fan, just compare it to the rear view of the Enterprise D.
Is the interior just as bad / plastic / cheap as in the born?
The interior is a bit over the top especially with the interior lighting and I'm not sure if I like it more than the ID 4. It wasn't addressed in the video but I also wonder whether it will do one pedal driving (the paddles might suggest that it does).
How big is the boot?
It's about this big.

I'm beginning to hate when auto journalists call something with a sloped roofline a "coupe'", despite clearly having 4 doors. So, I'm guessing a Mustang is a saloon because it has more than 2 seats? Where does this crap end?
As an American, I don't understand why the word "SUV" would be used to describe this vehicle. It's just a car. Pretty though one though.
Looking forward to it! looks amazing
I really like the looks, but the performance does not match it. I expect that the updated Tesla Y Performance will beat it on all parameters.
No rear wiper kills it for me. Also too expensive & coupe styling massively reduces practicality. Should have been made as an estate car - with a rear wiper.
"Fast enough " is all any car needs to be, they don't need to be made to go any faster than the legal maximum speed limit, which in most countries is 70mph, better still use the GPS to make the max speed correspond with the speed limit if the stretch of road the car is travelling on another time.
This is estimated to start at £47k and for that you don’t even get heated seats. Cupra is having a laugh. What does this offer that a Renault Scenic doesn’t for £10k less?
Do you even know what Guns 'n' Roses 2nd album is called ? What a nerve 😜
Guns and roses 2? 🤭
It's not as though they had a lot of choice from the VW family EV platform to work with for the last couple of years; the ID4 isn't the most exciting start-point (I know - I've been driving one for 3 years).
This guy is a bundle of joy 🙄…. Think he got out the wrong side of bed as everything seems to annoy him.
After a nasty experience of the VW Cupra Born EV platform both on AC and DC charging I’d avoid personally. There’s much better EVs out there in my experience
Good job for Cupra 👍with more distinctive model than the Born but 340 HP will it available all the time (not only at least 80% of Soc) and poor door's interior quality and no rear wisper 👎
340BHP and 0-60 in only 5.6? Way too slow for the power output and also only 135KW charging when the Enyaq can do 175KW. Seems off the pace.
It does 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 which is 0 to 60 in 5.4 seconds. It isn't electrifying quick but it is ok
Tom, you come across as a little disappointed, the price seems a bit high and even though most will be leased initially getting the pitch wrong can have such a negative lagon general perception, I think it will make a great used 3 year old family car from what you have shown but competition from Enyaq means I think will end up being heavily discounted in order to shift sales. Such a shame.
Maybe get a new editor for the transcript? The figures for range etc are different from the review and the test car is called the Macan too!
Thanks Jeremy - now fixed.
Front looks like a Deinonychus
Considering the range, charging speed and option specs it's miles behind the price for value of asian models. It's insane VW continues in that line of small, slow charging battery packs and overpriced options packages...
The car looks fantastic until you get to the tiny screen behind the wheel. Remove that screen and put a HUD it would look and feel 10x better... VW get your head out of your *** ;D
Technically you're going to look like 3 mopeds in formation.
£50k for an 'alright' kinda car...?
YIKES...!! 😵
Name something better in that price range
@@sunnyd6291
Ioniq 5 for comfort
EV6 for sporty handling
Smart #3 for swoopy-coupe looks
Honestly it looks badass, but when you know ANY Tesla can eat it, it looses its attractiveness...
If it’s the Cupra Born, then you can’t have high speeds over practicality!!
SUV Coupé? Bah, marketing description. It's a big hatchback.
Looks like Lamborghini urus.
1:23. Grandland, not frontera.
I think Frontera is coming back...
The Tavascan in EU costs 67000€ and ID.Unix in China $29000 ⁉️ Same car ⁉️ How can it be ⁉️ In same factory ⁉️ 😠
Made it halfway throught the video and then switched off. Large bulky parcel shelf, touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel, huge spine down the middle... it's a massive no from me!
👍👍👍
Not a fan of the coupe /suv look, just a loss of space with no real advantages
Errmm hello the looks
It’s very over styled which is a shame.
92 thousand Aussie Dollars shit no .
More bloody overpirced crossovers 🤢🤢🤢 it's a sign 📉 of an economy ripe for collapse again
Where's the 36kWh SEAT Mii gone?
I agree, I'd love to see a Skoda yeti EV too.
Slow tempo and quiet deep tone of this host, gets me to sleep EVERY time...
Glad to be of assistance.....
Electrifying ASMR ??
Yeah... It is nice... Yeah... It looks better than an id.4 or 5... But in the end of the day, it is just another SUV in a sea of SUVs....
Sorry, but i don't get excited for an SUV, even if it has the wheels on the roof and the seats upside down.
The sound quality of your voice over is not good :(
A 4 door "coupe" is like a "Pickup truck" without a cargo bed . . . .it isn't one.
A coupe has 2 doors.
How can you talk about music and not mention the amazing Sennheiser sound!?! Very disappointed, downvoted
Did I just hear this man say "the Born has been a great hit"?
In what reality? It's a pathetic excuse as a Cupra, and as any EV really. I had to drive one for a week as a loaner, and holy hell was it disappointing. It's can't really fastcharge, has mediocre range, looks like ass/edgy teenager vibes, and the infotainment was just absolutely atrocious. Android Auto crashed on me 7 times in 5 days of usage... The inbuilt nav system just doesn't properly function, and it's overall just a sorry excuse.
I just don't get why the hell VW created the Cupra brand. Ever since it seems they abandoned the Seat brand. They should have kept Seat with a couple of Cupra cool models. I don't even see Seat or Cupra on the streets, maybe once a year. VW effing up this big time just giga imbecility.
Wow!! Oh!! hold on its electric...
Utter garbage
