Why Independent Vehicles 🤔NEED🤔 Airbags! Airbag Man Compared to others.

  • I've had airbags in my towing rig for many years... that is until they failed. Then I was experiencing body roll, pitching, not to mention the ride height was all wrong. So now I am upgrading to Firestone Airbags from Airbag Man. Here's how the install went and what I think of them.

I've got the same air bags on my LC 200 and also tow a Starcraft outback . When hooked up with van fully loaded the car sits level 👍

An easier instal solution, if you don't have existing bags to remove, is to simply jack up the rear of the vehicle up allowing the suspension to drop (spring to extend fully) remove the wheel, then compress the airbag with the cover on it and block the connector hole in the airbag with a bit of blanked of tubing. Slide the lower spacer block through the gap in the spring followed by the airbag with connector to top, then the upper top hat block. Unplug the airbag and allow it to inflate, spreading the bag and cover evenly inplace inside spring. Connect and run the airlines to a suitable mounting point avoiding chafing points and exhaust. No special tools required or specialist mechanical skills. Job done about 2-3 hours taking it easy.

I’ve got. Mercedes ML350CDI with airbag suspension, so airbags all round, on board compressor etc it does it all automatically, they do work great

Have had Poly red airbags in my Pajero now for 4 years with towing a 'van.
They have performed faultlessly, and only need about 20-25psi., and about 10psi. for around town. My 'van is just over 2.1tonnes and ball weight about 170kgs.
Also fitted heavier normal height King Springs. Been through the macho tough truck phase, and have found I have less problems leaving the vehicle as near as stock as was designed.

Thanks for the info as to the change in arch height with increase in pressure, I think I need to increase the pressure I use after listening to you. One point though regarding WD Hitches, yes, they can be a ‘pain’ but when you add your hitchload to the towball the rear axle becomes a pivot so you are taking weight off the front axle and that weight has to go somewhere so you are adding it to the rear axle. Although your ride height is evened out by the airbags it doesn’t redistribute the added weight. The danger here is a lighter front end and an overloaded rear axle.

Great video! Question from USA...Texas, what spring is that you have fitted on your rig?
I have the Infiniti version of the Y62 and it is very difficult to find quality parts in America to lift the rig...ugh

It's funny made the same mistake with the crappy red pollys, was misguided info,my airbag mans just rocked up today, you just can't match the quality...even packaged better lol.. I'll be running my bags with a hayman Reece hitch as well..cheers

I was always told to pump the bags up after the load is on - is that not the case?

Good vid mate, I have a 200 and am looking into these too. Question is how much better does the car feel with air in them as opposed to deflated when not towing or heavily loaded? Cheers Steve

The only time I use them not towing is when I have 7 people loaded up, then it makes a big difference. When deflated you wouldn’t know that they are there

Cool thanks for that! Is there a minimum press to leave in? Say 5 psi or not on these? Polyairs I used to have were crap and needed 5 psi.

Hey David. I'm having dramas with my Pollyair (black) airbags. What is the towball weight of your caravan?

Only when I ran the hose too close to the exhaust, it melted. Relocated and now all is good. Great product 👍

I have an off subject question. What is the capacity of your inverter you run your air con with? I pick up my new Jayco tomorrow, exciting times. Thanks for the vids..

What you’ve neglected to measure is the front end lift mate. That’s where weight distribution comes into play.

hope you don't mind me sharing this i am a bit naïve as to weight dist vs airbags and the effects on independent suspension/control arms this may be worth watching th-cam.com/video/XBZu39pQ8Gg/w-d-xo.html im thinking maybe setting it up 0-200 on the back and weight dist for van ??? any thoughts

Weight distribution are a must have with certain trailers , you just need to add that dynamic.

Independent suspension wont give a true reading untill its been rolled a few meters at least

yungun, you want to know a better solution,..................................,pump up shocks.with 1 valve, why,??.because you can raise lower the vehicle, the air goes from 1 side to the other, off road, plus, there std shocks when empty.solvered problem for $200.but then, why buy a 4 wheel indi susp 4x4 in the first place.??.it aint real.look up ford f250 highboy.i have one.no mods needed.but to you anything more than 2 yrs old,,is old..

hey, yungun,,its not the irs,its the coils..you cant put weight more than the intended vehicle weight,on coils.there set & forget, you want to carry weight,GET LEAFS.once you get coils to carry your whatever, there set.soft when towing, harsh when empty,.NOT LEAFS,.air bags are a BIG,REALLY BIG, mistake,on ANY,4x4.they restrict movement.why do you yunguns, know fk all about anything.
