Some of the only times I've ever learned a trick almost immediately were during games of SKATE. I don't know what it is but sometimes you just magically land a trick you've never even tried. Or sometimes you get a lot closer to a trick than you expected, and it inspires you to learn the trick later.
I think the biggest tip is to recover properly before getting back into it? You need to have the confidence stuff has healed enough for you to not be scared destroying your feet / ankle again or you will have a hard time for sure.
Ive been having trouble with this. Took a break off skating for 8 years and pushed progression really fast in a couple months since getting back into it. Managed an inward heel and getting tres to flip regularly, but the more i try to push the ankle im getting pain in the less i land. Sucks to take a break so soon though
Some of my tips that I've learned after 9 years of skateboarding: 1- Tricks are sometimes like building blocks. I couldn't bs tailslide until I learned proper bs 5-0s. I never took the time to learn fs lipslides (although I could do harder tricks) but I decided to learn them one day to get better at fs tricks such as fs noseblunts or fs tailslides. I learned fs noseblunt the same session I learned fs overcrook. 2- Tricks will come and go, except your few go-to tricks. Therefore, if one of your tricks has been feeling good lately, take it to the next level. For instance, if you have been feeling good doing nose manuals, try a shuv out or a flip out, because next week you might not have them on lock anymore. Similarly, if you have been getting good crooks, try it on a handrail. 3- Some people might argue with this one, but landing on the board hurts way less than ditching/kicking out your board. So try to stick it if you believe you truly have the trick.
this first tip is exactly what i've been needing to hear. it feels like i can only land pop shuvs if i jump forward and this really inspired me to try controlling my board instead of letting it control me. plus the slow mo footage of your scoop should be really helpful in that process too
Man, I wish you a speedy recovery. Got my life changed by a herniated disc a few years back. I was bedridden for months, but proper physio and daily excercises got me going again, I even skated like 6 times last year (a big deal for me, thought I'd never skate again)! Anyway, (try to) enjoy the recovery process, and I hope you'll be crushing it again in no-time!
I’m so grateful for you man! You have taught me so much though you don’t know me I have tried even harder to get better day in and day out because of every facet of your videos man. I have discovered the mental as well as the simple minutia of physical and foot placement that has helped me correct my lack luster trials. People are so stubborn on being taught and I am grateful that I humbled myself when I was injured to watch a skate hack and yours was one of them and has lead me on to being a better skater and a grateful one also.
Awesome tips man, especially about jumping with the board. With Tres thats a killer for me. I feel like I'm having to jump so far forward to try and catch the board but maybe I'm not scooping right! Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Patience is key. Don’t force yourself too long ona trick in one sesh if it’s not working out. You have to know that it’ll eventually work if you keep practicing.
This was exactly the video I needed to stumble on. I know sometimes it's just frustration but I almost stopped skating because I didn't think I could pass my progression anymore . I've been stuck trying to learn the same tricks for months now . I almost felt like quiting cus skating is so damn hard lol but I love it too much to stop . This truly felt refreshing and different than other skate advice thank you!
So true, worn out boards and shoes feel so different. My personal tip for skating is you don’t just skate with your feet, your whole body is involved. How you have your weight proportioned on your board, the way you throw your arms. Also timing, you gotta time when you pop flick, and jump. Especially for tre flips. try different feet positioning, try having your heels hang out more, angle your feet different. Put your foot more forward ect. For flip tricks you gotta bend your foot as much as possible before you flick. And if you really want to get good you gotta spend more time skating,
In what way? You mean like you stretch your legs when jumping up? Try to throw your arms up as high in the air as you possibly can right after you pop the tail. If this fails, try to crouch, jump up, throw your arms up as high as can be and try to retract your knees into your chest. You don't need a board to practice this necessarily. Point is, you should get comfortable in a 'crouched position up high in the air' basically. Last but not least, the later you flick your flip tricks, the more likely your legs will end up stretched. It might be timing related, try to flick earlier.
Stepping away from a trick when you can't quite get it is honestly so helpful. Let the muscle memory and effort of the attempts integrate itself for a bit, then come back to the trick either the next day or even a week or two later once you've taken the mind (and frustration) off it. 🙏
I think I needed this, I’ve been attempting kickflips for awhile, and I took a break now because I skipped some of the more basic tricks. It’s due to me learning stuff quick. I felt kind of bad leaving off where I was but seeing your comments has made me feel better about it

Eyyy not sure if you saw my suggestion but thanks for doing this! Also could you do a video about steep and mellow kicks on decks and your thoughts on each?
Good point on the gear aspect. Skaters in general dont have much money, so we sometimes opt buying cheap stuff. But that can turn into a nightmare. Flips with cheap shoes or jacked griptape can become hell.
Thanks for the video! Lower back disk issues are nasty, something that really helped me was a herb called Boswellia, it's really good for pain and inflammation. Also cutting out grains and dairy can lower inflammation and help heal the disc. All the best to you!
First tip is so true. When I leaned front shuvs like REALLY learned front shuvs I didn’t need to jump backwards, my pop moved the board underneath me, same with tre flips
I’ve been really struggling with heelflips I have the flick down but no matter what I can’t seem to land on the board I can only land with my front foot or with the board behind me
Watch the heelflip tutorials that he did, I think one of those is called how to fix your heelflips or something like that, he gives a tip that can help you, your shoulders need to be aligned with the board, some people say jump backwards but that's weird, it's more like keeping your back straight. I don't know how you place your feet but I learned how to do ollies setting them like a heelflip, then I just kick my foot out and that's how I got em, both regular and switch.
yep been skating for 15 years now and ive learned the same hard earned lesson s presented here, would of been nice to have something like this when i was younger but hey experince makes things really sink in
Bro you have the steeziest kickflips. I’m still trying to land mine and I’m so close. At this point it’s mental like you said. Just gotta stay after it.
I agree with a particular point you spoke about being that you shouldn't focus on the jumping back or forward to compensate for landing a trick. Learning varial heelflips eventually taught me the issue itself is my front shuv technique being jumping so far behind me that it's impossible to get both the proper height and full rotation. If I had learnt front shuvs a little better than I would have a much easier time.
@skatehacks I’ve dealt with back issues for years. L5/S1 disc has been the worst. Anyway, the thing that helped me most was to do core exercises to strengthen the muscles that support the spine. Bro! You're the fucking man. Straight up amazing wisdom.. I've been skating for 20 years, and know all these things. Nevertheless we all need to be reminded of these core values/ practices
Don’t try to put your front on early, try to hang your back foot back in the air for slightly longer. If you spin it well it comes into your feet pretty naturally
Man you are the first that "I have heard" mention how new grip can affect your flip tricks I am learning how to kickflip on a new board and I can't get this thing to flip at all! It's like velcro! But trying on my old board is alot better! And the key is to try different foot positions and not get stuck on the wrong position over and over because you will ruin your muscle memory lol trust me I know lol but I love how you broke it down man EXCELLENT TIPS BRO👍✌also I know what your going through with the back issue man I have had lower back surgery because of slipped disc's! It's no joke man! I have days where I can't even walk! It hurts so bad so take it light man ✌
What helped me was thinking about both my front and back foot in doing the flip. I was focusing on the front foot flick at first but I learned that I need to consider the back foot too, to catch the board in the air after the flick. After that, just practice and build muscle memory. Just sharing
@@chickenmanoktae I appreciate the tip man. Perhaps that is something I'm doing wrong. My main issue is the board always goes behind me. I have to do what he says not to focus on in this video. I have to deliberately jump back in order to land on the board, otherwise it's just my heels on there.
Getting a board with more concave really helps. I was practicing heelflips and i could only land with my front foot on my board until i did it with my friends board and landed dead bolts lol. Also lighter wheels helps but it all boils down to how you practice i guess
A video on timing might be good. For an example, the timing of getting your feet in position for a trick or when you should bend down before you pop onto a ledge or flatground trick
because of what you describe here: having practiced, then taking time off and being better at it the next time, from the start I've always made a point out of trying all kinds of tricks I knew I couldn't possibly land, but I wanted my body and brain to get used to the motions and now after 5 months I can land pretty good kickflips, ollie pretty high, but also I can flip varial heels, laser flips, pressure flips, varial flips, kiwi flips, just for trying. Landing on the board however will take some actual practice with them, but I use that time on kickflips still.
Dude that’s me rn I have a disc problem I think I went for bs 180 and the most horrible pain came to I couldn’t breathe for a second but to present day I think I’m in the same stage as you where I can skate again but I’m taking it easy because I don’t want to irritate it but I hope you get better man !!!because it sucks
The first 3 min omg. Dude thank you. Started back and I stop a few times when I was younger and each couple year hiatus I was better. Like obvious become stronger 6th 7th 8th grade but eoukdnt skate 2 years and mental could understand. My body would take one session and I could progress further than before. Now 15 years later it took about a month and I'm only half way back but man I love skating. I will never stop again. Opiates made nothing enjoyable for years. Clean for 2.5 years. Skating one month almost can tre flip. ALMOST! ITS ROUGH THE FIRST COUPLE SESSIONS BUT THAT GOES AWAY AND WOW I LOVE SKATEBOARDING. IF KNEES HURT TRY SMITH MACHINE SQUATES WITH LEG CURLS AND LEG PRESSES ON HEELS. 2 TO 1HAMSTRING TO QUAD WORKOUTS. IT HELP ME FEEL FOOKING GREAT.
Bro you had me at the very first tip. It didn't take me long to realize i didn't like the trick tips where they told me to jump forward or backwards. I'm in control of the board to a certain extent, if i have to jump forward too much then I'm popping or flicking wrong or my timing is off. You don't want to tre down a set and have to try to aim 2 feet in front of you lol
hello thanks for the great tips. how about a tutorial regarding practicing stationary and practicing tricks while moving? it seems my ollie is high enough stationary, but can't even pop nor jump while moving. i can front shove and fs 180. but ollie while rolling and over obstacles is what i am struggling. thanks in advance! keep it up and stay healthy.
Was skating flatground the other day and as I landed a half can flip my lower back just started killing me. Couldn’t move for days, today is the first without crazy pain. Hoping it goes soon and isn’t something serious 😕 just wanna skate! Injuries suck man, hope you recover soon.
I always learn tricks when I'm not even skating. I'll be at work or laying in bed, thinking of a trick. and all of a sudden something will just click. then i cant get my mind off it until i get on my board again. Get well soon dude! I've got a bad knee to take care of right now.
I have the flip for the tre perfect, I just can't land it for the life of me. I always feel like I use too much power and energy flicking it with no time left in the air to actually land it. Maybe try less? That worked for hard flips for me. I just hope soon I can land them as clean and effortlessly as you do.
how to get your switch ankle to flick? i have no control in my switch ankle and leg. any tips to help with getting more control with your non dominant leg?
I'm stuck trying to land a kickflip, almost had 1 but my back foot slipped, after taking some time off I couldn't even get a good flip sometimes when I do my body just jumped backwards, I think thats because my front foot is too much to the side but if I try balancing it in the middle I just couldn't get a good flip.
What helped me alot was to not think of it as a kickflip but a more sideways ollie. Stand just around 20 degrees more to ur right or left (goofy regular) and try to ollie with a flick... i could send u a video of what i mean if you want to :)
Try doing a 360 without your board a few times. Then go on your board, pop and throw your shoulders 360, your feet will follow automatically. Maybe it helps throwing your shoulders just before you pop too. shouldn't be to hard, it's really easy once you commit on really turning 360 degrees :)
I wish you 100% recovery. back issues are no joke. being healthy in general is a blessing we sometimes take for granted.

It hurts so bad so take it light man ✌
this is the video i needed. been skating 16 years and can't even kickflip haha
@@vx1k commit my boy you got it. land back on your toes. that helped me. I dont get kick flips every try but when I do it feels amazing.
U down bad tremendously but have fun at least
@@Its-mamo yo ong 😂
Getting a board with more concave really helps. I was practicing heelflips and i could only land with my front foot on my board until i did it with my friends board and landed dead bolts lol. Also lighter wheels helps but it all boils down to how you practice i guess
only problem is that 90% of the deck market out there is nothing but mellow concaves 😭😭
@@maxsanchez764try skating real, krooked, antihero, hockey, fa, some dgk shapes, Baker b2 shape, and some dethwish
Got down with this one
A video on timing might be good. For an example, the timing of getting your feet in position for a trick or when you should bend down before you pop onto a ledge or flatground trick
noillie inward looking clean asf 😳
Pls make a tutorial on how to nollie pressure hardflip... i saw u doing one and it was clean asfff
I had to watch this so many times cuz I kept getting distracted by the amazing tricks you were doing lol
because of what you describe here: having practiced, then taking time off and being better at it the next time, from the start I've always made a point out of trying all kinds of tricks I knew I couldn't possibly land, but I wanted my body and brain to get used to the motions and now after 5 months I can land pretty good kickflips, ollie pretty high, but also I can flip varial heels, laser flips, pressure flips, varial flips, kiwi flips, just for trying.
Solid tips right here
bro your tre flips are so good
Amazing advice
Thanks for this video
Bro you had me at the very first tip. It didn't take me long to realize i didn't like the trick tips where they told me to jump forward or backwards. I'm in control of the board to a certain extent, if i have to jump forward too much then I'm popping or flicking wrong or my timing is off. You don't want to tre down a set and have to try to aim 2 feet in front of you lol
I need winter to be over!!! I can’t skate when it’s 25 degrees every day 🙄
Same man it sucks
-13 and 8 in of snow
I’ve notice I can skate most shoes except vans or bulky shoes. Thin shoes rip faster but feel better for me as I can feel the board with my feet more
hello thanks for the great tips. how about a tutorial regarding practicing stationary and practicing tricks while moving?
it seems my ollie is high enough stationary, but can't even pop nor jump while moving. i can front shove and fs 180. but ollie while rolling and over obstacles is what i am struggling. thanks in advance! keep it up and stay healthy.
Its the same motion stationary and moving honestly just go really really really slow at first and work your way up
love your videos
Was skating flatground the other day and as I landed a half can flip my lower back just started killing me. Couldn’t move for days, today is the first without crazy pain. Hoping it goes soon and isn’t something serious 😕 just wanna skate! Injuries suck man, hope you recover soon.
Go visit a chiropractor before it happens again. Wish I did that years ago before my pain began. Start being proactive with your back health
I always learn tricks when I'm not even skating. I'll be at work or laying in bed, thinking of a trick. and all of a sudden something will just click. then i cant get my mind off it until i get on my board again.
Get well soon dude! I've got a bad knee to take care of right now.
happened last night with fs flips
Bruh look up how to bullet proof your knees by “strength side” it helped me get my knees stronger.
I have the flip for the tre perfect, I just can't land it for the life of me. I always feel like I use too much power and energy flicking it with no time left in the air to actually land it. Maybe try less? That worked for hard flips for me. I just hope soon I can land them as clean and effortlessly as you do.
great video
Hope your disc issue is resolved and you recover quickly🙏
how to get your switch ankle to flick? i have no control in my switch ankle and leg. any tips to help with getting more control with your non dominant leg?
Hey, what would you call the trick you're doing 0:23 ? :p
Tip 1: Actually the opposite advice helped me. Learning that I should move forward when trying to ollie helped tremendously
this is good footage
I'm stuck trying to land a kickflip, almost had 1 but my back foot slipped, after taking some time off I couldn't even get a good flip sometimes when I do my body just jumped backwards, I think thats because my front foot is too much to the side but if I try balancing it in the middle I just couldn't get a good flip.
What helped me alot was to not think of it as a kickflip but a more sideways ollie. Stand just around 20 degrees more to ur right or left (goofy regular) and try to ollie with a flick... i could send u a video of what i mean if you want to :)
I didn’t know you were from San Antonio. ❤️
Came here for the skate tips stayed for the life advice ✌
I hate that can do fake tre flips but can't seem to stick regular tres only get them one foot. So frustrating!
"Just play skate" that´s definitely the best tip
Please do a tutorial on how to fakie frontside 360,the whole youtube doesnt have a detailed tutorial on it
Try doing a 360 without your board a few times. Then go on your board, pop and throw your shoulders 360, your feet will follow automatically. Maybe it helps throwing your shoulders just before you pop too. shouldn't be to hard, it's really easy once you commit on really turning 360 degrees :)
