I'd much rather have the GS. I had an R1100GS for 14 years and 91,000 miles and a 950 Adventure for two years and 25,000 miles. Both great bikes. I love the Telelever system. It does aid stability but the low centre of gravity locks the GS to the road. Nick
Just got a 1290 SAS of my own this past October. Haven't had as much riding on it as I would have liked due to winter, but I did just get it in for its first service last week.....before yesterday's freak spring snowfall. lol Anyway I've been loving it a lot so far. I mostly just ride around the local streets so wanted something fun for the 1 hour local blast, but could also actually take me on a nice tour when I want and maybe even the mild offroad once every blue moon. Got the comfort seat on order to help with the rear as I hear everyone say it really helps improve the comfort. Can't wait for the summer!!
I think you're right Chopsy, the telelever front end has some really good points, but the front end feel is lacking .......I guess that's why alternative front ends never took over in racing, there's been several attempts over the years.
The GS is undoubtedly a brilliant bike, but after the KTM the exhaust and engine just sound so flat and boring. The F word, Fun, is what has made me twice choose KTM over BMW after test rides.
Agree. I got to try the 1300 and it was nice for sure….but my 23 SAS just has the excitement I desire at this time in my life. I love the KTM just a bit better for now
Given the fact ktm switchgear feels like an 80s atari quality wise and the aftersales are awful I will own almost anything before a ktm. KTM quality is not great . For a fast tourer which most will use these for I would rather have a multistrada or the s1000xr. hardly any “adventure” bikes ever actually go on an adventure .
Hi Chopsy, I started using trail-braking on the rear when I got my last bike (MT09 Gen 2). I’d been out of biking for a while and brushed up my skills by watching a few videos and this technique was recommended. It definitely settles the bike and makes cornering smoother, especially at lower speed.
I tried them all, Chopsy. None of them came close to the Multi V4s, so the big red machine stole my heart and I've never looked at anything else!❤ Keep up the good work🤙

That and after seeing the hideous Super Duke headlight, I didn't want to risk getting stuck with the same hideous thing on my bike. Can't say I'll be looking to trade my new 1290 any time, really happy with it.
Just got a 1290s with tech pack brand new for 14 grand. Test rode 2 1250 gs' and although decent, didnt touch the ktm. With tech pack enabled you get anti dive and the adaptive cruise control is a game changer. A new 1300 gs with the same tech probs sets you back 22 grand so its a no brainer.

I think you have made my mind up anyway on the choice of new tyres for my SAS in the coming months. Keep up the good work Chop’s ✊
Great video. Can’t wait to hear what you think of the new tire. Still on my stock SAS tires. But plan to upgrade soon. Looking at the new Pirelli scorpion and now this one too. I’m 85% road so it might be a good choice.
I had this 1290 KTM SAS but it got stolen after 6 months. I had it Aktapovic, upgraded seat, orange handguards. I loved the bike and hope to buy the new model in 2025 when it comes.
Great video! It's making me miss my 1290 SAS! I wonder if I'll have to buy a 1390 SAS once they've come down to a 'free in a box of rice krispies' sort of price
I have 2022 all black KTM 1290 SAS with 2020 SC Project black titanium exhaust with Rottweiler provided Arrow decat midpipe and the soundtrack is savage. Brutal. The KTM with power parts quick turn throttle and Rekluse torqe drive kit transforms and refines the bike
@countbrapcula-espana Hey matey, did you fit all these mods yourself or did you go to an specific place in Spain? I might be interested, your bike looks gorgeous
As a current super adventure and former BMW owner I can say that the KTM isn't just a hooligan machine. It is when you want it to be but it can also be as docile as a Bmer where the Bmer can't transform into a hooligan machine. The KTM just gives you the extra option a BMW can't give.
Sold my Superduke GT for a late model 1200GS for better 2 up touring comfort, and quite quickly took umbrage with the lack of feel through the telelever fork and the dull drone from the Boxer Twin engine… 6 months later I sold it and replaced with a 21 plate Super Adventure, and it was like being reunited with an old friend, only this time with more touring potential too… Sure, the new 1300GS is going to be an improvement in many ways, but until BMW ditch their trademark telelever suspension and their Boxer Twin engines, it simply isn’t an engaging or exciting bike to ride! Capable…? Absolutely… But I can drive a car or take the bus if I just want to get from A to B in an efficient manner… The KTM gives so many more smiles per mile than the BMW, and that is a significant part of motorcycling for me…
Fab comparison Chopsy. When I test rode the KTM SA I would have bought it if it was just me, but buying an Adventure Bike for 2 up touring the GS won the day (1250 I have)
Thanks for the review. The brakes are linked on the GS aren't they - so it almost trail brakes all the time anyway perhaps? Combined with telever means the front does appear a bit "more "remote" - I really noticed that on a back-to-back test with the RS and GS a few years ago.
The KTM LC8 adventure bikes are two wheeled trophy trucks. Yes there are more comfortable bikes, and there are more refined bikes.. but if you want all day hooligan with some practicality and proper off road performance...
Appreciate the back break tip, come from sports bikes to naked sports & now just bought a Africa twin, so will try this if a spirited ride gets gets ugly 🎉👍cheers
The differences between the two bikes are very clear. On the KTM you have a more powerful engine, and that’s what gives you that instant pull at a twitch of the throttle. The GS 1300 as a not so powerful bike, you have to feel that power absence on the road riding. It’s impossible not to sense it. Otherwise, the improvement of the GS 1300 over the 1250 predecessor is clear and significant. I had my share of KTM bikes. They’re fabulous to ride when they work properly… The WP Apex suspensions are very good, but the feel of the Tarmac and the info from the front wheel on the new 1300 GS is bettered with this telelever Evo suspension, when compared to the 1250 GS. The new bike is very different, besides being a GS, it’s nimbler and rides faster. The top end speed capability is amplified and for public roads it’s more than enough. I can take confidence on doing long mileage trips on this bike. And I never felt it with my KTM’s. I ride bikes for the fun of it like we all do, but I also prefer a bike that ensures the way back home. Never had that Secure feeling about the KTM SDGT, a bike that I loved to own but that also gave me some strong headaches. Honestly, we’re talking about two very different worlds. Excellent video. Thanks
All hype, what the engineers in Berlin should have done was go next door to their Austrian counterparts to see how to make a bike with HP/weight ratio that works….
I can’t place it but the windshield area on the GS from the cockpit is horrible. It looks like cartoon moose antlers, or it reminds me of the sheet music holders in an orchestra. It just looks like it’s partially disassembled for some reason and…..well…..I kinda hate it.
@@LambChopRides Ah, cool. That would be awesome 😎 I was looking at a used one, but KTM offers a pretty good deal here in Sweden at the moment. 20.000SEK off (about £1500) plus an extra year of warranty.
As a current 2023 model owner I do suggest going for new tires as soon as possible. The oe tires aren't bad in the dry but are the worst wet tires I've ever had. Also the ergo powerparts seat (1 piece) really makes a difference. I set my programmable toggle switches to heated grips and suspension. I change suspension settings often, it really makes a difference. I leave the throttle mapping in sport mode pretty much 100% of the time.
@@cuzimaluzer777 Thanks for the tips. I’ve heard about tyres being pretty bad. Will see how I get along with the standard seat. Might get the ergo sooner rather than later.
Brilliant vid as always, Chopsy, but on the "NEXT TIME" bit at the end, there was a couple of apexes that you needed public transport to get a bit closer to.🤣 Love the new intro as well 👍
Interesting vid as ever. They're great machines but I just can't help thinking that these types of bikes will eventually go the same way as the litre superbikes in that they'll be too quick & too expensive so people will look to cheaper "middleweights" with more useable & realistic power levels etc. Thoughts?

Thanks for the video. 😃👍 I think you said the BMW wasn't that easy to wheelie. Did you have the bike in dynamic mode? Also I think there is adjustment for practically everything! I think also that the Trophy doesn't necessarily come with higher bars and high suspension, Enduro package and whatever else, the name just denotes the colour essentially, and you can spec it up with most of the add ons, depending on your requirements.
Interesting review Chopsy of two very different bikes. IMHO there’s never a clear winner both superb machines in there own way, I’d have either but I don’t like orange 😊
Ps I have a comfort heated seat on my Ktm and it's still like sitting on a house brick ! After riding the new gs I'd say the bmw is was smoother and much more comfy ! I reckon rev for rev it's very close indeed , the Ktm would have it on pure top speed but up to 140 mph I don't think you would split them . IMO lol
Why don't the Japanese offer a big twin to compete with these two? The 1050 V-Strom & Africa Twin don't have the power whilst Yamaha gave up developing the XTZ1200 years ago & no longer sell it where Euro emissions regulations apply. Given the sales volumes for this class, surely they should be. I had a 1290 SAS from new for 4 years. It was great fun to ride & the most comfortable bike I've owned (comfort seat fitted) but was also the most unreliable. The first engine lasted 400 miles before the gearbox failed (motor replaced by KTM), the shock absorber started leaking just outside the warranty period & the keyless ignition developed a mind of its own toward the end of my ownership. The finish degraded quicker than it should have as well (it looked tatty after 16k even though I kept it clean & liberally applied ACF50 everywhere I could). It put me right off KTM & made me wary of European marques in general. The Japanese may not lead the way anymore in terms of their model line-ups but I reckon they're still the masters of mass manufacture & the reliability that usually goes with that. If Yamaha offered an XTZ1300 with ~130bhp at the wheel, I would be the first in line...
Test rode the 23 SAS and wasn’t impressed. The way the engine heat blows right at you was a no go for me. Not to mention the quality is severely lacking compared to the GS. The buttons were super cheap chinese plastic. Felt like it was out of the 80s. The seat was ridiculously hard and uncomfortable. I was going to buy one the day of the test ride, then after, hard pass. Tried the 1300GS and everything about the bike was quality. Mind you, i hated the 1250 GS. BMW wasn’t on my radar, until i tried the 1300. Bike is a masterpiece. Bought a trophy with every option. Incredible machine. Sold my multi v4s and don’t miss it.
So i guess thats why they build them with 265 mm disc on the rear and 310 + dual discs on the front, so you can go around smoking the pads off of the rear brakes, really. And we are supposed to take your advice?
Great video to watch and very lucky to get to be there and film it but real world? Definitely not. Wish bik and tyre manufacturers did it more real world in the UK. Raining and potted roads
I'd still take the GS, built better than the KTM and will probably be more reliable in the long run, also the GS is king of torque and these bikes are all about that.....(Also chops isn't going to let the GS beat his beloved ktm brand 😉🤣)
Sorry - Hooligan, comfortable, nice seat etc etc dont really go in the same sentance... Hooligan should be in the same sentance as uncomfortable, impractical, noisy, and mental....like the hyper....thats hooligan...these are just sudo offroad tourers...
Sorry- Hooligan and comfortable absolutely do go in the same sentence. Those of us pushing on in age love a bit of comfort but still absolutely love the performance of a powerful bike. There's a reason these sell in big numbers. I would love either bike.
@@Banditmanuk Well, by that logic everything is a hooligan bike....and yes im pushing in age as well...i can draw part of my pension this year...but still own a Hyoermotard 1100 and RSV4 factory amongst my bikes..if wanted a tourer which i dont...then yeah...one of these...if i wanted a brand new hooligan bike then id be looking at a superduke...
Handles like a fat pig though for advanced riders like myself. I bought a new 1250 and really tried to like it,I loved the torquey engine and comfort but the handling was terrible..
Well this is an unfair comparison chopsie, as the GS is clearly the best off-road beast ever made and therefore will never be a match for the ktm on the road. Don't you consume all the marketing fluff?! 😉
How can BMW be considered hooligan king ? The 1300 has finally raised their hp to 145. The KTM has 160+ with the tuned Super Duke engine LC8 twin, the upcoming 1390 SAS will have 180 hp. The Multistrada V4S and V4S Rally along with the KTM look sinister and are racy beasts with MotoGP derived tech. BMW has ??????
I think BMW look after their customers better and offer an extended warranty up to 10 years in the UK, but their bikes are no more reliable than KTM. There is a very long list of issues across multiple bikes and there are already issues with the 1300. The key difference between the brands is that KTM brings out new bikes or extensively revises an existing model on an almost yearly basis, whereas BMW tend to release a bike and it’s largely unchanged for its 10 year lifespan, with a mid life tweak after 5 years. You could argue whether innovation and new features or stability and predictability in the model range is better.
Please do NOT listen to the dumb advice of braking on the the rear going into a corner. The dive of the front suspension increases traction on the front tire which is what you want entering a corner. This will set you up for failure!!! I can’t believe he even said it! That tells me that any opinion he has about these two bikes can probably be ignored!
I think hooligan king title must belong to KTM. And the gs is still ugly and rather cheap looking in areas and that matters for me at this price level .....

I reckon rev for rev it's very close indeed , the Ktm would have it on pure top speed but up to 140 mph I don't think you would split them . IMO lol
Yeah exactly Mark what I thought.. shame its not a bit more comfortable in the seat 😕 You would think that would be an easy thing to get right!
@@LambChopRides had 17 gs's and 12 super adventures 🙈 maybe I'll keep this bm! Who knows . Maybe the wife !!
How do they compare with the equivalent Ducati?
That KTM seat is hell after 200 miles
It's not a 90 degree vtwin
lol, “Hey Michelin Man, are you having a “Goodyear” so far?’
Bmw gs's seem to attract a certain flavour of knob, usually ones with matching bmw branded riding gear
They do tend to be a bit Harley - won't acknowledge other riders.
I always get "car sick" when riding a GS due to the lack of feedback.
90 degree V- twin Chopsy?
No maybe not 😆👍
@@LambChopRides I know you knew this was a 75 degree one as you’ve mentioned this in other videos of yours. Keep up the great content you provide. 😊
That was one mighty fine intro👍
Thanks sir 😄👍
Why do we ride motorcycles? If you want to be happy and do crazy things every time you open the throttle, KTM is the right address.
This little weird black wings near the windshield on the BMW look terrible. They would distract me.
Hercule Poirot's moustache?
Another nice day in the office :-)
It's a tough job but someone has to do it 😄
Ok, but are the tyres any good😂
Yes more on the tyres later 😆
Fast? Furious? Hooligan? Methinks you need an updated review of an S1000XR.🤨 In line 4's rule.🙂
So i guess thats why they build them with 265 mm disc on the rear and 310 + dual discs on the front, so you can go around smoking the pads off of the rear brakes, really. And we are supposed to take your advice?
Multistrada 1260 is stil the king 💥
Bmw is great bike if it works and so badly made that it hurts, they even stop selling it because of the problems…
Great video to watch and very lucky to get to be there and film it but real world? Definitely not. Wish bik and tyre manufacturers did it more real world in the UK. Raining and potted roads
Wot! New music?
Yes bit of a mix up with a new intro 👍
I owned the KTM. The new GS is a better bike, in every way. 95% the performance of the KTM in a MUCH more civilised package.
1390 sa spy shots are about and if it's a refinement like sd well there's know contest
So BMW has the better touring bike in the GS and the better sports adventure in the S1000XR
Bmw looks like it's got antlers, I can't un see it now
I'd still take the GS, built better than the KTM and will probably be more reliable in the long run, also the GS is king of torque and these bikes are all about that.....(Also chops isn't going to let the GS beat his beloved ktm brand 😉🤣)
But the price of new GS. Jesus f-ing christ…. I can almost buy 2 2023 1290s for 1 1300gs specced out.
What’s with the blue armbands mr Chops, looking forward to the tire test ❤
It was just to identify who was in blue group.. I guess to ensure the lead and tail riders didn't end up waiting for a random rider 😁👍
👍
Just ECU flashed my r1250 GSA, I bet it's faster then the 1300 and just as fast as the KTM, with full exhaust and slip-on, just saying...
Haha very true! 😄👍
Multistrada v4 RS, BMW m1000xr
How can BMW be considered hooligan king ? The 1300 has finally raised their hp to 145. The KTM has 160+ with the tuned Super Duke engine LC8 twin, the upcoming 1390 SAS will have 180 hp. The Multistrada V4S and V4S Rally along with the KTM look sinister and are racy beasts with MotoGP derived tech.
BMW has ??????
It's not about horsepower, it's about torque and the GS is king of that
Also with chain, M1000XR has 201HP, well done BMW!!
The KTM more fun to ride but i bet the BMW doesn't break down as much and lasts longer.
5 batterys replaced in the paderborn German area on the new 1300gs alone
I think BMW look after their customers better and offer an extended warranty up to 10 years in the UK, but their bikes are no more reliable than KTM. There is a very long list of issues across multiple bikes and there are already issues with the 1300. The key difference between the brands is that KTM brings out new bikes or extensively revises an existing model on an almost yearly basis, whereas BMW tend to release a bike and it’s largely unchanged for its 10 year lifespan, with a mid life tweak after 5 years. You could argue whether innovation and new features or stability and predictability in the model range is better.
But I ride bikes for fun.
@@r6ymyWell its everybody to their own. I'd be happy with either of them because i can't afford one anyway.🤑😂
Never had a KTM break down, and I had 4 the past 15 years.
Wait. So the BMW is not fun? All motorcycles are fun.
Lol.
Michelin man. 😆
KTM without hesitation.
Neither are pretty bikes, but the GS just sounds like a sewing machine.
BMW sounds like a tractor tbh and that’s coming from r1250gs owner fun ktm mega miles I not sure which would be better close call no doubt
I think hooligan king title must belong to KTM. And the gs is still ugly and rather cheap looking in areas and that matters for me at this price level .....
I don't trust KTM.
Gs 1300 🤮🤮one ugly bike..
