As a 1250 owner, like the new updates, but I am learning to be content with what I have. If I had throw away money....maybe. All this tech and all I want to do is simply ride. Unless BMW offers a heck of a great promotion....there is no rush. Plus, this is the first Gen for this bike as it is all new.
At the age of 55 I brought my first GS, at the age of 66 years old I'm now on my third GS, currently owning from new a 2021 GS 1250 ADV TE triple black, I can't wait for the adventure later this year, and will most likely get the cheque book out again. For me only two real disappointments with the new bike is the integration of the taillamp functions onto the indicators, I think that's borderline dangerous, and the lack of illuminated switchgear. But at the age of 55 when you skeleton starts screaming you will buy an adventure bike not saying a GS, but you know you are going to do it, ha-ha. Thank you really enjoyed you being a hooligan...
While ktm’s bottom of the barrel motorcycles come with illuminated switchgear, unbelievable BMW! That said it’s still an amazing motorcycle. Thanks Chops, always enjoy your videos👏
I did a 250 mile test ride in December, absolutely loved it. Compared to my 1250 the build quality has taken a step up, it’s just as comfortable, covers distance without effort and it is FUN!
The ‘wobbly’ rack is designed that way to minimise the wind effect on the top case and there’s certainly been no recalls due to bikes catching fire in the uk! There’s been a few recalls for software updates but nothing that any new bike goes through.
@@timparish172 don't get me wrong. Everybody can pick his or her favourite bike. I couldn't care less. But ignorance does not make a recall go away. The starter motor relay of the new GS caused the fires. One bike started to burn while being transported in a van. The journalist had to stop the car and fight the fire. Could have been fatal. The fires occured while the engines were not running. Could have happened inside a garage as well. In Germany 854 R1300 GS were recalled, 84 in Austria. Bikes in the UK were also affected. Ordered bikes in the UK were put on hold. Inform yourself. And you say that every single manufacturer has got the same problem? Wow! 🤣 In more than 25 years of owning Japanese bikes nothing like that has ever happened to me. Yeah, that is stepping up...🤣 Wish you all the best! Stay safe! 🔥
@@GCTO239 That’s crap, all recalls have to be logged with both the EU and UK governments, especially if there’s a risk to human life. There is nothing, repeat nothing logged, on either Government’s site. Learn to separate fact from fiction, bikes may have been held while an investigation was carried out, but no recall was required!
Yes, yes, it’s faster, more tech, comfortable and so on but you haven’t addressed the most important question: can you use it to pick up a turkey from Asda? 😂
Thanks for a great review! I’m sure it’s ‘better’ than the old bike but is it more reliable? Will the rear drive bearings or drive shaft disintegrate? Do you have to disassemble the entire bike to replace the clutch or main seal? Only time will tell - so I’ll leave it a year or two and let the beta testers have a go before parting with the hard earned.
Sold my R1250GS after two years and gone back to proper motorcycling pleasure without all that distracting tech. and heavy weight. For every day to day use off the motorway and A roads a mid size bike is much more user friendly. Old school classic and retro bikes are much more fun to live with at a fraction of the cost.
Disagree. I'm 6’4” and I both enjoy and can handle my R1250RS without much effort. The added weight's usefulness for higher speed stability -- esp in crosswinds and poor weather -- is welcome for something I commute on whenever possible.
Something to note is Opt 719 billet head covers on the 1250 prevented use of afternarket covers like MachineArtMoto's X-Heads. May introduce similar fitting issues for the 1300.
Lovely looking bike, nice colour too, I would love to have one but so far the only thing I want next after my black SDR is a Triumph Rocket III. I thought your chanell has been a bit quiet recently, I bet you've put 5000 miles on that GS. Keep up the great work
I'm 6ft and found the screen noisy as ! The one i currently have as a loaner jumps out of 1st gear continuously and has the worst snatchy throttle in dynamic mode- properly like an on off switch. Nothing on the throttle then a mad surge with minimal input. I also disagree with the ergos, i find the underside of my thighs getting cold through wind blast which is not there on my 1250. I found i was sitting on the bike rather than in it.
Style and cost aside, there’s no judging a GS/A without riding one. There’s a lot it doesn’t do best, e.g. single-track, but all in all, it’s THE bike.
Looks great. Admittedly i didn't like the aesthetics of the older models. If i did, no doubt I'd have gotten my knickers twisted over the new headlight too 😂. A bit too techy and a lot too pricey for me, but if I could afford to drop 25k on a new bike, this would definitely be a contender.
Thanks for the great review. I have the 2022 40th anniversary 1250 GSA and always looking for another to keep it company. Nothing on the 1300 that screams upgrade from the 1250 though. The 1250 gets the job done quite well with what is has and since I am not a speed junky it isn't an important factor to me. With lighter components is the 1300 as durable as the 1250. The 1250 is my first motorcycle and I have beaten the crap out of it with only minor scratches on the crash guards. I picked up the adventure model for the larger fuel tank so hope they don't reduce that if there ever is a 1300 GSA.
I can't quite understand why BMW made the radar so large. I expect under that big surface is a smaller actual unit as my 2014 VW Golf active radar box is only about 4" square. I'd still love to try one though, especially as it seems to have lost that previous clunky tractor gearbox. Just need that lottery win, until then my faithful Tiger 800 will have to soldier on.
Nice review, watched a video yesterday from Bennett’s Bike Social testing the GS-911. Anyway he was able to switch on the sports screen using the GS 911 functions, seemingly already there just not active on all bikes.
The tank side panels marking up is nothing new. I had the same problem with my 1250GS TE Exclusive which endedbup with the panel getting replaced. The solution was to have some PPF fitted at my expense. It solved the problem but you shouldn't have to do that on a new premium bike.
wonder how this bike dosent have the headlights pro? it comes standard on the te version. The akra adds weight compared to the standard exhasut btw. good vid!

Well just recorded today a comparison with the 1250, and yes 1250 is also great. But I wouldn't want a 1250, the 1300 brings a more dynamic ride and excitement. Both myself and Greg agreed we could see ourselves on one. He went into it quite skeptical too 👍
Its got loads more tec it's much faster but their is just one problem it all comes with a much higher price ticket. Over 22 grand for a fully specked version is far to rich for me.
Sorry but been watching this video just after the one on which you shown the Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer, and owning a KTM 1290 SAS and comparing the acceleration punch of the 3, the GS is almost like a bicycle 🤣. I almost feel the necessity to drop down the bike and push it to see if that helps!
Great review as always! My local bmw dealer told me that the akra slipon is actually a little bit heavier than stock pipe😁 great bike and fit and finish are mega! Really like the Trophy colors.
@@LambChopRidesthey also sell ktm so went for a 2023 1290super adventure s instead, powerparts heated seat and grip, arrow slipon, techpack. Really want ur opinion/comparison to the ktm sas, multi v4 vs 1300gs
I am 34 and I will most likely buy this bike in about two weeks. Waiting for the bike to be available for a days rent. After multiple herniated disks with surgery and a screwed up shoulder, I guess my body is old enough for this kind of bike 😀. Was looking at KTM and Ducati for a brief second, but I am not paying multiple thousand € per year in insurance. It is mind blowing how much cheaper a GS is to run in comparisson to the other big ADV bikes.
Just admit reality. You are entering your golden years. Relax, and enjoy it, and thank your lucky stars that such a machine exists. And take no notice of the grumblers. If you want to use it to just to go out for a cofee, down the road, just do it in, smug, pleasure, with the reassurance that if you choose to cross the alps, in comfort, and composure, , and fun, you have the machine to do it.
Well I am older than you and still will never go down the sheep route and buy a BMW 👍 for me adaptive only works with average speed cameras. If on motorways you end up with car trying to under take or slowly slowing down without realizing. May as well guys drive a car with all the mod cons. For me a motorcycle is an escape for all the tech stuff. 👍
Have you done a comparison between the KTM super adventure and the BMW? I have a Superduke and if I were to go for an adventure bike I think I’d have to go for the super adventure for the wheelies and general stupidity..
I am a big GS fan, but was really interested to hear your thoughts knowing you are not completely smitten with the 1250GS. Wow, it really is impressive if it’s winning you over. Best I don’t ride one, or I’m going to have to find the money to upgrade. 😂
What I struggle with is the power raise do you need this much power for adventure/touring I dont think so plus the police in the UK are around every covert corner doing you for 25 in a 20 MPH zone especially in my what used to be ideal destination Wales wont be going there next riding season they must be loosing a fortune in tourism
Just make sure you get an insurance quote BEFORE you part with any cash and maybe before you even have a test ride. That quote will make your mind up for you. If you live in London, forget it altogether.
Great review as normal Chops, Like you I'm really coming around to liking the GS more and more.... but what about a pillion? Can you get someone on the back to give that perspective?
As always, an excellent and very timely review.. Thank you. I have now reached the age (67 and a boring old fart) when I am seriously considering switching from a sports bike (I currently have a S1000 RR, previously I had the Ducati V4s) to something a little more sedate and comfortable. I have drawn up a shortlist and the 1300 GS has joined the Motor Guzzi V100 S. It is going to be very difficult to make a final decision.
Lovely bike, nice review, I have a 1200, The cost to upgrade is just to much for me right now. I probably will eventually as theses start to hit the used market.
They've come full circle with the LC series. They're now back to the weight of the original R1200GS LC of 237KG, although with 20BHP more and lots more toys to go wrong. Probably worth saving 10K and getting one of those instead!
Not even that...the promised weight is marketing nonsense. It is heavier in reality. My test bike already had a weight of 257 kg without crash bars or anything.
Is the GS worth the premium over a Tracer 9 GT plus? And BMW shaft drives have a tendency to fail leaving owners with big repair bill. Is it the same shaft drive on this new GS do you know?

@@DucatiDale because we usually like to tinker with bikes ourselves and do some maintenance as a pleasure activity. Another issue that electronic failure on a motorcycle somehow costs the same as on the car while in our mind motorcycles supposed to be cheaper and simpler.
Nice review as usual. I had a GS1250 for a while and never took it out of dynamic mode, but it still wasn't exciting but handled wonderfully. The 1300 does look like a step up! TBH, I leave all my bikes in sports mode and just adjust the throttle. I've never found rain or road modes on any bike to give better feedback and there is no such thing as too much power if you have good brakes and know how to ride, even in the centre of a big city.
The thing you missed is the level of traction control that also changes along with the throttle map (riding modes), especially in rain mode. If it was only throttle then yes - I agree 100% that it’s all in the wrist.
@@Honda_Africa_Twin I know what you're saying but I grew up riding in the 80s before ABS and traction control. In dynamic mode there is enough of everything for me to adjust my riding. I currently own a Livewire One and sport mode has enough engine breaking, traction control, etc despite the huge torque, even for wet conditions
I wonder how many modern bikes will get written off (and the riders injured) because they were concentrating on fiddling with the various tech instead of concentrating on the hazards that are right in front of them
Great looking bike, with some nice features, although the gold wheels and bars don't do it for me at all. Like the billet (fancy advertisers name for block) parts too, especially the clutch and brake reservoirs. Much prefer them to the Brembo jam jars that Triumph are putting on their bikes of late ;-)
Im sure it's a nice bike to ride. But it wont make me part with one the most overlooked bikes on the road my beloved Gen 2 Versys 1000gt. A few tasteful carbon mods, and in candy red and metallic black its also a very handsome bike compared to some. Got a 2019 mt10 too, both bikes for a lot less than the bimmer.
Good call. Keep it. Nothing beats a Japanese inline four powering a comfortable and dynamic bike. If I was in for a street bike, it would be the Versys 1000. I will stick with my beloved 1100 Africa Twin and Transalp because I also do a lot of serious offroading. I tested the new GS and give it a hard pass. Have fun and stay safe! 🤙🏼
I also love the first gen MT-10. You got a good taste, mate! 👍🏼 25 years of owning Japanese bikes only (most of them were Kawas) spoiled me. I will not get into European drama. 😂 Regards from Germany.

If it wasnt for youtube, you wouldnt know the gs existed over the winter months in the UK!
Got one on order. Still think I’m a bit young for a gs at 136 but seems like a nice bike 😂
Great review. Go on buy one 🎉
136!!!!!!
Chopsie should I upgrade the R1250 GSA? Or, buy that M1000R?
m1000XR is king.....
What about the M1000XR! perfect mix of the two 😎😎
Good idea.@@LambChopRides
yay more power now we can all ride our Beemers like car drivers !!
What is the weight of the motorcycle you are riding, I know the base variant weight is 237, but for the other variants there is no weight details mentioned
Great review chopsy. Keep them coming👍👍
BMW are really smart. This is super marketing! Let’s hand every TH-camr our flagship and sit back. Now really is it that good???? Talk about pissing in one’s pocket. Choppsy, luv you mate, but fair dinkum…. 🇦🇺
Yes, I could afford one but I’m reluctant to spend over 20k for a motorcycle. I only use my bikes for 6 months of the year, so it’s a lot of money
Oh really haha that's unbelievable Erik 😄 Yeah trophy colours are good saw one yesterday. Not sure about white subframe though
Great bike. Atrractive profile; not sure about the headlight. Nick
Agreed
Super review as always Chops!
Just make sure you get an insurance quote BEFORE you part with any cash and maybe before you even have a test ride. That quote will make your mind up for you. If you live in London, forget it altogether.
thanks for the review, just confirmed why i wont be buying a 1300, will keep my 1250 and buy another few old school bikes instead !!
Great review as normal Chops, Like you I'm really coming around to liking the GS more and more.... but what about a pillion? Can you get someone on the back to give that perspective?
Unfortunately not allowed to carry one with the BMW insurance 😫
As always, an excellent and very timely review.. Thank you. I have now reached the age (67 and a boring old fart) when I am seriously considering switching from a sports bike (I currently have a S1000 RR, previously I had the Ducati V4s) to something a little more sedate and comfortable. I have drawn up a shortlist and the 1300 GS has joined the Motor Guzzi V100 S. It is going to be very difficult to make a final decision.
You already have a BMW and know how good they are. I sat on the Guzzi, and it felt nice, but I'll always have a GS in the garage.
I'd have the Superduke GT over it, but if one dropped in my lap I'd probably keep it - latest model looks exciting as well as capable. Good job BMW!
Yeah it's really surprising! 👍
Lovely bike, nice review, I have a 1200, The cost to upgrade is just to much for me right now. I probably will eventually as theses start to hit the used market.
I could buy one but can't justify the cost which I only ride for 6/7 months
Did a Scotsman design the headlamp on the new R1300?
Fair question. 😉
Great vid Chops, looking forward to the Tracer comparison….
I think that's an odd comparison, they are not even in the same category...
Great review Chops, as a fellow 52 year old it is concerning the new GS is some what appealing glad you ended that you wouldn't buy one though.. 🤣🤣
Great review - thanks Chopsy.
No problem 👍
Is the GS worth the premium over a Tracer 9 GT plus? And BMW shaft drives have a tendency to fail leaving owners with big repair bill. Is it the same shaft drive on this new GS do you know?
New one
I will let you know, Tracer GT + here at the moment?
@@LambChopRides Thanks John.
Still can’t get around that Headlight.. need to see it in person.
Interesting bike Chop’s for sure , but you’re video skills was outstanding keep up the great work
I appreciate that! 👍👍
New lid Chopsy?
Replacement of driveshaft maintenance feature.
What about the lack of tail lamp
Really doest bother me that, think it actually looks slightly better
@@LambChopRides alot of people moaned about it on 1250 nobody really mentioned it on 1300 i think the 1300 is making people act like little kids must have the latest i was relived when i test rode one last year cos am certainly not pining for one over my 1250gsa the 125 gsa is a brute the 1300gs aint a brute its more slim and sporty kind defeats the object of the gs imo if i wanna ride summat slimmer and more agile i bring out my speed triple
I've got the 1250GS .......... I wouldn't have a clue what options to spec on the New 1300GS, keep changing my mind after watching every TH-cam review🤷♂...... maybe a comparison video between basic v high spec versions
Does the phone compartment lock with the keyless central locking.
No
Hmm good question... I don't think so
@@LambChopRides Would be nice if it did, maybe it will come in the future adventure version along with wireless charging & apple/android carplay on the connected ride thingy
This bike needs more demanding roads. We need tests in Corsica.
Nuclear! Why do some folk say 'nuculer'? Nice bike, and looks good too. But it's a bit pricey.
Did I see you in Marks and Spencers?
Haha yes... last Saturday in Havant?
Thanks for the review but will you be buying one now that you are getting old like Mr flyer
....he's not actually going to catch me up in age...
Maybe the R 1600 GS when I'm 60 😁
@@LambChopRidesto match tmf’s wing 😂
Been watching a few of these reviews, I just wonder why they outsourced the gearbox to massey ferguson and couldnt work out how to get little lights into the switchgear, and please why doesnt anyone do a review on the basic model as all these electronics seem to be out of favour with the less well off, unless you are a Bmw fanboy of course
Unfortunately the press bikes are normally full loaded examples that why 👍
You WILL buy a GS eventually. I held out until I was 58, but my GSXS1000F was just getting too uncomfortable unfortunately
All that tech will ultimately be its downfall five to ten years down the line. Great bike though and great review 👍
Plenty of 1200 and 1250’s getting around without tech issues.
@@martyn_gpeople never mention tech on cars as a issue do they just bikes 😂
@@DucatiDale because we usually like to tinker with bikes ourselves and do some maintenance as a pleasure activity. Another issue that electronic failure on a motorcycle somehow costs the same as on the car while in our mind motorcycles supposed to be cheaper and simpler.
@@PovilasPanavas I know modern bikes with tech are a lot reliable than old 4t and 2t bikes a lot safer as well
Really great real world review. Damn. I'm tempted to take a test ride on one of these for the very first time.
Do it! 👍
I am 52 and I couldn’t give up my Speed 1200 RS any time soon, maybe a GS when i am 65
Road mode gives a softer suspension when riding at steady, faster speeds on the highway. You don't feel every bump.
I wonder how many modern bikes will get written off (and the riders injured) because they were concentrating on fiddling with the various tech instead of concentrating on the hazards that are right in front of them
I was 52 when I got my first GS, on my third one now, and waiting for whatever the GSA version will become later this year to get my wallet out.
Break down and buy a GS.Maybe the weather will then improve.,Cheers
Great looking bike, with some nice features, although the gold wheels and bars don't do it for me at all. Like the billet (fancy advertisers name for block) parts too, especially the clutch and brake reservoirs. Much prefer them to the Brembo jam jars that Triumph are putting on their bikes of late ;-)
Sounds like a perfect time to pick up an older model
Quandary Chopsy; new GS vs new XR, different vibe but too close for comfort, can’t wait till that motor feeds down to the R and RS 😎
Yeah need to try that new XR... maybe even the M 😎😎👍
😂 Regards from Germany.
that or a 1290 soon to be 1390 super adventure?
COMPARISON!!😁😁
Its funny how back in the early 80s 100hp was and felt fast now riders say it has to be 140 - 150ph to be fast, then havimg all the electronic aids to help real it in !😊
Slightly understated comment about 1250 paintwork claims there! 😂😂
Remember when BMW did a HP2 megamoto based on air cooled GS 1200? Imagine now an M1300gs with 17” inch wheels and M power paint scheme!
Oh yes like the sound of that! 😎😎
ACC is just the start of the dumbing down and eventual neutering tech of motorcycles... otherwise, it seems fantastisch, great video, Choppsy!
