  • INTP - How and why you should choose one of the careers and go for it.
INTPs have too many interests to be content with one and that can hurt them in the long run.
    Enjoy the video!

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an introspective self-report questionnaire indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. The test attempts to assign four categories: introversion or extraversion, sensing or intuition, thinking or feeling, judging or perceiving. One letter from each category is taken to produce a four-letter test result, like INTP or INFP

@Rafi Wolffe I was and am in similar shoes like yours. Although my reason to join the military was a bit complicated but it was not entirely different than yours because I was in an alternative medical field practicing and I was burned out after doing it for 2 years. Then I joined the military as a medic. I couldn't stay longer than the contract I signed. My sanity and mentality were being lost there.
It's been 3 years I got out and I have obtained another degree during the pandemic but now I have another interest to learn in engineering but this time I think I will be able to use my Ni function more lol

Definitely feeling called out here. I got married and started having kids in my early 20's. I started going to school for IT around the same time. I'm almost 40 now and have seriously considered doing a career change 3 or 4 times since, but I always end up admitting to myself that it's not viable at this point in life. So, I do my IT stuff for work, do the dad and husband thing when I get home, and when I have some spare time I read and watch videos about all of my non-IT interests. Psychology, religion/philosophy, history, earth/life science, weightlifting techniques, etc. I usually have 3 or 4 books I'm in the middle of at any given time. It may not perfectly fit my (probably unrealistic) expectations for my life, but it definitely helps scratch the itch.

Landscapes, characters, items, monsters, fantasy maps, starships, architecture, user interface, alien races, vehicles ... different styles, different worlds ... Love it! As a middle aged INTP in the IT industry who has pretty much stuck with the same job, I’d like to add, that while the pay is good if you do that - you run the risk of getting into a “golden handcuffs” scenario if you have dependencies that naturally develop with time.
The problem is that as your skill increases, your income increases, and as your income increases, the more you can afford to buy. So fast forward 20 years and you buy a nice house and car, and have a couple children. Now you’ve set a dependency on your income. Now you must retain a certain level of income to maintain this lifestyle.
If you were to change careers at this point your income would be lower, due to lower proficiency. You may have to move to a smaller house or make your children change schools or spend less on fun entertainment stuff.
So I think it’s not easy to switch careers when there are expectations and dependencies that necessitate you to bring in the same level of income.
That being said, watching this video made me consider that maybe being an IT consultant is a good job for INTP. I imagine it allows you to jump from project to project which would fulfill that need to keep things fresh while keeping income at a good level.
(I have never tried it though because it seemed too unstable.)

Question about going into IT: I already have a bachelor's in International Affairs and I'm hopefully finishing up a Master's in Counseling Psychology, but learned recently I'm an INTP and actually not as good counseling people as I thought I might be. One option I would consider is IT. Would you recommend either 1) going back and getting a 2nd bachelor's degree in IT or just DIY and passing the certification exams like the CompTIA A+ and so on by myself?
I very recently learned I was mistyped (I'm an INTP and not an INFP). I went to college for a B.A. in International Affairs with the goal of working in national security and intelligence because I wanted to analyze geopolitical issues and security threats. It's a very hard industry to get into as I learned when I graduated. Months after I graduated and no interviews, I thought I'd get in shape for the military (but I had to lose over 100 lbs). In 1 year, I had lost 80 lbs, but was in a place of low self-esteem: a 24 year old college graduate with no career who was living with his parents and working part-time retail work.... and when a family friend told me it would likely be another year before I would be ready for the military, I gave into my better impulses and gave up, switching instead to the Psychology career field. Unfortunately, I not only gained all the weight back since I had strong reason to keep on my routine, but now I see that counseling/therapy is not my strong suit, I would like to go back to getting in shape for the military. So, I hope to spend the next 2-3 years to get in shape for the military by the time I turn 30-31 years old. However, I would consider IT as a backup because after my experience in my Counseling Psychology program, I am just very done working in a people-centered environment and just want nothing but "things based" work which use a solid system of rules and logic, but maybe can be used creatively to solve complex problems. Plus, I always thought IT stuff was really interesting -- in high school, I worked for a large corporation as an office assistant in the massive IT department and I thought it would be really cool to learn Cybersecurity and Networking.

These jobs got very monotonous and boring after a while. Also your mind starts to drift elsewhere after a while. Last one I studied was IT. Currently been working as a software developer for over a 5 years and liking it. It keeps your mind busy and no two days are the same. It's constant learning, which I actually like. Choosing the right career has become a pressing concern for me. Like you mentioned, I completed my bachelor's in social work and pursued a master's in Organisational Leadership, only to realize later that it wasn't aligned with my interests. That was three years ago. Presently, my passion has shifted towards video editing and Photoshop. A friend, who works as a web developer, has encouraged me to explore a career in web development. This is exactly what I did. Right after graduating from high school I went to a trade school, graduated and started working for the city of Dallas. This was great because I was making alot of money, the job was so easy that I could study while at work and they paid for half of my tuition. The only thing I didn't anticipate was the people who work there and the drama I had to deal with. The plan would have been perfect if I didn't had to deal with the drama bullshit.
I finally figured out what I wanted to do which was management information system.
I strongly suggest, while taking courses at a university or community college and while finding yourself, that you don't take credit classes take non-credit classes so when you are ready to study what you really want as a career you will not have accumulated so many credits that you can no longer apply for financial aid.
It would be awesome if you do the dark side of intp which is entj. I will like to see a video on that, this video is right on and you know exactly what you are talking about.

Do not worry about other people's opinions. I suck at advanced math and could not pursue a major in STEM. Ended up getting a degree that uses applied algebra and an advanced degree in a general field. In short, got a master's degree in being a generalist to pursue a variety of fields. Each INTP has their own path. Employers care more about the level of the degree than what it is in. A former manager of mine was supervisor of Accounts Payable for a Fortune 100 company and her bachelors is in Shakespearean English. My sister is a project manager in IT and has an Associates in Social Work and a bachelors in Psychology.

The thing I loved were all the action parts like weapons training, sparring, combat exercises, going to the front, and doing real soldier stuff. I hate most of the Garrison nonsense like uniform inspections, various ceremonies, and of course, the worst part was collective punishment. I never understood what any ribbon rack perfectly level meant about your ability to conduct operations and I never got the sense in taking away everybody’s weekend for the next month because some idiot six companies over got themselves in trouble with the law and it was apparently your job as someone who’s never met them to impress on them good army values, and regulate their behavior.
So I took that experience with me and then use it for policing, which I enjoy very much. I enjoy the problem-solving of policing and rewarding, feeling from actually seeing tangible results of achieving good in this world a little bit day by day.
I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t do this. The only other thing I really want to do besides shoot guns and kick ass is bang hot chicks, but chicks don’t pay to get laid, and I’m way too ugly to make porn.

I'm amazed at how well this video describes me. I've been indecisive about my career ever since I began job hopping over a decade ago. To make matters worse, I dropped out of community college for a lack of clear direction for my life. I've decided, after much job dissatisfaction and a recent work injury, to get this career issue solved. No more factory or warehouse work. Never!

But I don’t actually make the item.
    Which is kinda the problem.

Never ending problem like weather, pest and disease which requires freestyle solutions. And no Humans around to annoy you. Way easier than Programming and Accounting(worst job for INTP), somewhat too easy, you better have internet connectivity in the farm to looks for side interest, otherwise it will be boring. Agriculture science is still science although farming does not allow 100% predictable outcome and there will be some chaos which is fine for INTP but not INTJ. I can't believe rural farmers are still doing it the old fashion way. You will master a lot of stuff you take for granted, like plumbing, electrical, mechanical etc, making you jack of all trades because hiring other people isn't always feasible. Ignore those who says wasting your talent.

At the start of this year, I've recently decided that I will not pursue a career as a musician anymore. While I love music, some things conflict with my personality. I'm highly introverted, but being able to make friends on the spot is an essential skill for musicians. Musicians (or artists, really) are generally poor, and while I don't value money that much, focusing on this career would mean that I would not be free financially. The last and most important factor is that I started to get bored with music and discovered that I have a LOT of interest.
I'm sticking to one: coding/web development/programming (I know it's not one, but they're kind of related). The first reason I switched to this one was the money. I want to live a stable life, not worrying about money so that I can focus my time on developing my interest. Second, is that this career is one of my interests. Programming involves a lot of problem-solving, which is one of the great features of INTP.
The magic here is that I made all these decisions before considering being an INTP. Now that I know all these INTP quirks, I feel more confident about my decision. No, I think this is the best possible decision for me in my life. I'm not sure if this career will stay on my interests radar after a couple of years, but I'm sticking with it because I will already have the money and freedom to do every other thing I want to do in my life.

Even as an INTP, I suck at advanced math and could not pursue a major in STEM, even though all my interests were in science.
You can get your bachelors in Chemistry and Masters in BioChemistry with a focus in Molecular Biology. Don't worry about your major. The first 2 years of college are general education courses and the last 2 years are for your major. You have time to decide and see what classes you do better at.
