Sam, first of all, as a fan of Casey too - I love the fact that you can still be critical of him (a concept that many people on the internet can't seem to grasp). This was a great piece. Less of a call out and more of an objective look at the topic. Also, you should totally checkout Jeff's latest podcast where he also mentioned the documentary. If you watch that, it seems like there could be some legal reasons as to why he is holding off on releasing it. That's like the only other explanation that I can think of.

I think Casey doesn’t want to release it because he would be ruining a young kids life in his eyes. But I wouldn’t be surprised if after more years have passed he decides to upload. By then, it will be more of a documentary than an internet news coverage story
Casey has also been a major inspiration for me, and sometimes i feel like he is turning more and more into a Bro seeking approval of other Bros, and it sucks to see that. Or some would argue he was just always like that (There are some great videos out there about how him leaving his ex girlfriend to raise their child alone, was turned into the great story we all know of "I had to make sacrifices when I started in new-york".) Except that now his voice is heard and respected. It really sucks, and it's also why it is greatly appreciated when a man uses his voice and his platform to tell a Bro that he is not doing the right thing. This was a really well thought out and fair take. Casey's comments in that recent podcast were kind of frustrating to hear really. I get how he must feel, it's not nice to see someone you care about make bad decisions, but it seems a pretty clear cut choice in terms of right and wrong. Plus, with how long people remember things on the internet, if Casey had released the doc when he'd initially finished it, David probably wouldn't be in much of a worse position than he is now at this moment in time, because the outrage would've died down. Surely David spending all this time in suspense, not knowing if the doc would be released or not has been just as unpleasant as if it had just come out straight away? The only real difference is no one's been able to learn from it other than a select few people at a film festival a few years ago. Hopefully Casey reconsiders, but who knows...
As the saying goes - "never meet your heroes". We were all inspired not by Casey but by our interpretation, an image of "Casey the youtube vlogger". Whenever he goes outside of that role it's easy to see the difference between the two, like you noticed yourself. Casey the vlogger guy would drop the video on YT the day it was exported knowing he does the right thing. Casey the person protects his buddy while lying about the true reason. Don't tell me that a rich well known guy can't find a way to put a video up on any streaming platforms. There's so much cheap shit up on Netflix or HBO that I'm sure a guy like him could do it tomorrow. Great vid Sam. When someone’s friends are known scammers, and they promote scams and help their brother promoting them, they show us that we have to follow them just for what they are: content creators. It is disheartening to see Casey basically save face for David, rather than doing it for the victims and not serving them a bit of justice. Counterpoint though: Casey is one of the people who proved that internet videos aren’t just «internet videos» anymore, and if he believed in is own mantra he could be in the forefront of those who proved that «proper documentaries» don’t have to be shown on «legit media» to be legit - the problem here is that he is now looking for money upfront, not ad money, which in this case might not even be a thing because he might get sued if he publishes himself. «Looking for the right partner» is just newspeak for «I want to get paid up front, and have additional money as distribution deals are made, and I want a publisher to take the brunt of the noise and cost if somebody sues». As Casey now has way more too loose than he did back in the day he has suddenly «grown up» and do things «the old way» - which is fair enough, except for the fact he is hiding behind «finding the right partner» and other vague statements. If he really believed his own statements from way back when this doc would be the perfect example of «the old ways are dead», but in the end it all boils down to money, ans it is a bit sad that he at least can’t be honest about it.

Great video, Sam! Casey doesn't intend on releasing the documentary, he'd rather protect someone who doesn't deserve it. He's also let the poor girl down who had all of this happen to her when she had a glimmer of hope. But what we should also be taking note of are Casey's political views as shown at the end of that very interview. He is not somebody who should be getting any more of our attention after these huge red flags.
