Fantastic live performance! One of the many memorable songs from the "Closing Time" album. His voice in those days had a velvety resonance rather than a gruff gravely quality of today. Such a rare pleasure to listen to him sing this live ... even with the last 3 1/2 half words missing. We all know what they are anyway.
His voice became an intentional exaggeration, not the nature result of his lifestyle. He spent a lot of time and effort working on a type of voice that would allow him to create characters that seemed authentic and original. I love his early stuff, but he knew that there was not enough to distinguish him from his peers that would give him a lasting career with the satisfaction of continued artistic exploration he desired. He set out to do things his own way and to make the kind of art he wanted to make, and it just happened to be successful. I don't think he could have envisioned it being as well-received as it has been, but honesty is impossible to disguise.
So wonderful to hear vintage TW. I got my first exposure when Small Change came out in '76. Didn't connect with Closing Time until then. He embodies the 'Three chords and the truth' songwriting ethos. Closing Time, Martha, Hold On (Mule Variations), Rosie..... so much soul.
Lifes blessings are great whisky, great wine, great tea, great coffee, great cheese, great mushrooms, great sex and great Tom Waits songs .......... this is GREAT !
It's always bothered me that the song gets cut off at the end before finishing...so I went out of my way and found the full version. It's currently on my channel for those interested
I hope you are well my darling friend and in good spirits. I love this radio broadcast. I have the entire thing and it’s been a favorite. I have discovered that at night the wait is awful. The seconds take forever, because I wish you were closer...unfortunately this version cuts off. I could upload mine I guess.
Helli I hope that you and those you love for are well. If so, have you put thevconcert up? Would you post your song? In any case, wow, How does the concert sound?
Wow, that is definitely long time ago, he must have been about 25 - 27, but that "old" >y'no< told me, it's him... ...thanks for this upload, even though it's not finished at the end... still good to hear! :)
you have got to be kidding me. the video ends with several seconds left in the song. it just cuts off halfway. this is such a beautiful song, but i am giving it a thumbs down because of this.
Many packs of cigarettes ago!! I've been a Tom Waits fan since first hearing Closing Time. His songs just keep getting better.
This was the first Tom Waits song I heard. It's been almost 20 years and I'm still hooked.
I can hear Bob Dylan's influence here. I LOVE this love song- everything Tom has done- a truly unique artist...Namaste
Yes, indeed, very much Dylanesque, here. Amazing.
Listening to this makes me slowly fall in love with my man.. Not officially dating yet but he introduced me to Tom Waits.. He is also named Tom :)
You still together???
And he waits
Tom is probably come to be my #1 musical inspiration.

Ol’ 55 is a vivid, beautiful song. Closing Time is an incredible album
Totally agree. ❤
He used to sleep in front of our house in his car when I was a tiny kid. If I only knew ❤️
You serious?
You mean it? He's gorgeous. But so is his wife ;)
Listening to this in 2019... Man, time and cigarettes have really made his voice evolve.
His voice hasn't changed. At this point he hadn't adopted the dog growling hobo character. He was still a legit artist, not a performer.

this is awesome, I almost didn't think it was Tom at first!!!

Seriously, the tune is cut short? You gotta be joking.

@Filoudelou definately tom waits, just really early tom waits, probably from '73 or '74
this is a tom waits song. but i believe this is john prine doing the song. love both artists and both versions tho 😊
I want to hear recording from folk radios of 60s 70s. Is it possible? I really like folk and i want to hear old recordings
👌🌹✨💫
Ok 👌 thank you.Rare stuff indeed What year is this?
why Tom waits didnt performance on live?
His speaking voice sounds exactly like Dylan (when introducing it). Is he mimicking him, because I never heard him speak like that
ell in love with you.......
0:38 sec. Now again full. Or not. Or.
Pardon me. So .. this is bar song. .. oh m Godesses. I had no clues 🎉
I hear some Dylan in his voice
a bit of a dylan in the phrasing...anyway très beautiful
Done
Is it really Tom Waits ? I'm not so sure. It sounds like him in his early years but I have some doubt about it. Can somebody confirm ?
Not Tom...
fade out
who the hell uploaded this halfarsed?
Funny

I’ll never quite understand what happened to his voice. I find his gravly persona almost unlistenable.
Smoking, drinking and screaming into pillows
