Tom Waits with late 70's road band: the Nocturnal Emissions(NYC) Frank Vicari (tenor), Fitz Jenkins (bass), Chip White (drums) Had backstage passes for those years
The greats always said to play yourself, not someone else and he sure did, super cool. At 64 I finally learned how to be myself when I play and not give a damn. I respect Mr. Waits.
Introduced to his music Junior year of high school. '78. HUGE fan from the start of that. Saw him live twice. The Mule tour in 00 and again in the Glitter and Doom tours in Chicago. Both absolutely legendary.
warm beer and cold women I knew that song for more than 40 years but I never saw Tom singing it , it is a surprise better that in the LP . Thank you ! Cold women sounds so real in this fucking world .
After I don't know how many years. Lost my memory, maybe my mind. Who knows how much time. But all is well when the road ends with a good ol' friend of mine.
Watching the subtitles try to keep up with his word play is hilarious. Sometimes it doesn't even try, "Serious seersucker Saturday evening cranberry acoutrement" shows up as four words lol
This performance of 'Warm beer and cold women' gets me every time. And 'Bad liver..' and 'new coat of paint' is top notch as well. And his back up band looks like they replied to a Robert Crumb ad. But damn can they play with Waits.
Jazz is an essential part to the majority of hip-hop; Poetry is fundamentally, which is what Tom Waits is doing here. The chello in the background also is reminiscent of songs by A Tribe Called Quest, like Buggin Out or Jazz. These are my guesses.
To say I love, "lerf" dig, this man is an understatement- one of the mornings- and a frown turns to a smile. Wish he was my neighbour. Hugs, Tom ( what happens when you swim with a bow-legged woman?) Namaste, Z ( dbl Hubba-hubba...imagine friends being in a stream of Tom's consciousness!!!)
Lew Tabackin is, I do believe, the Tenor Saxophone player. Some real good work here, under really difficult conditions. This, by the way, is the only recording of "Elephant Beer Blues", and Alasandar Metodiev is to be praised for posting.
W.L. Barlow Without being sure, i think it's Frank Vicari on Tenor Sax. I know he played with him on the album "Foreign Affairs", and he's saying "Go on and fly on the road a little bit , Frank" at 28.20..
Dear fellow Waitsians. Please could you cast an eye over the new video by LILA J, A LETTER TO MR TOM WAITS.It is our wish that he gets to hear it, somehow.....someday.......somewhere. Cheers! th-cam.com/video/fQswTOxiAl8/w-d-xo.html
realizing that there are Danes in the audience, it makes sense why there wasn't much laughter at the jokes he was making, given that they are not a nation known for comedy. Probably my favorite live Tom Waits performance.
Most of the homeless in Moscow can recite big chunks of the great Russian literature by heart. Reciting Dostoevsky at -20°C is what I call a real education.
I dig Tom Waits and all, but if some drunk was dribbling shit into my ear while I was trying to listen to a bit of cool jazz, I'd piss me off sufficiently for me to tell him to go bother someone else .... politely, of course ...
Isn't natural that voice he is acting and pretending to be drunk. Tom Wait changed too many ways his voice depending of the performance. I prefer his natural voice on "Hope don't fall in love with you"
His mom was bourbon pregnant...nine funny months for old Tom, everyday swimmin' in a comfortable alcool amnios pool. Here he play the barfly character, he just play himself...so boring.
Love Tom Waits he transcends time.
incredible performance!!!
This man is the personification of ' cool'
I didn't even realize how long he was talking till he stopped. He is the coolest of cats bro. I dont need weed just my morning Tom Waits and coffee.
I love this guy. One of a kind.
still tasty as ever thanks for posting Alesandar
This is a really good performance and not bad film quality. Excellent stuff
"I met this Taxidermist the other night. He was at a restaurant, stuffing himself. You know how it is?" Lol
AHAHAHA!!!... 😂😂 😀
Fucking hilarious!!!!...

Genius, just genius!

freakin' awesome.... tom creatin' his early persona. love it..
" and i did it myself - and it didn't even hurt " classic
Watching the subtitles try to keep up with his word play is hilarious. Sometimes it doesn't even try, "Serious seersucker Saturday evening cranberry acoutrement" shows up as four words lol
Tom Waits straight channels a blues musician from 40 years before his time.
Put some good headphones on. The audio is amazing.
This performance of 'Warm beer and cold women' gets me every time. And 'Bad liver..' and 'new coat of paint' is top notch as well. And his back up band looks like they replied to a Robert Crumb ad. But damn can they play with Waits.
@Conan the buddha yeah Chinaski’s the book equivalent of Tom Waits musical style from this era of his career.
No I like my beer my livers fine
He looks healthy there either way
Yes that’s the piano as it had to be the piano either way
That’s his instrument and he had to figure it out later on
И как тут не влюбиться на всю жизнь?❤
I love Tom Waits, but I only clicked on this video to see if he was wearing an eye patch. It appeared that way in the video icon!
Hail Tom Waits!
Reminds me of me in my younger Days. Wean I was Drunk! Playing the Clubs.

Keep telling my friend; what is there to learn about people and the world? -Tell me what else do I need to know?
Great
Acting, Singing Mr Cool like, you say is definitely Mr Waits.
heart
A "taxidermist" who "stuffs himself". Gold.
this video contains no flim-flam OR hanky-panky.
"He said, 'I sailed across the ocean, on the head of my dick,
I ate 10 tons a cat shit, I ain't never got sick.'" 36:03 So hilarious.
Why does this makes me think of hip-hop?
Ilya S Probably because hip-hop comes from jazz and such. People (not saying that you do) tend to forget that!
+BartReedMusic thats right!! and his (fantastic) way of phrasing makes it hipityhop haha.
Jazz is an essential part to the majority of hip-hop; Poetry is fundamentally, which is what Tom Waits is doing here. The chello in the background also is reminiscent of songs by A Tribe Called Quest, like Buggin Out or Jazz. These are my guesses.
@Joey COCO ugh, I can practically smell the pretension oozing out of your comment.
It's more beatnic,like Jack K.
totally bop

FLIM FLAM.
Tom Waits is always Nighthawk.
Tom is such a unique performer, and his band is absolutely fabulous! What's the name of the saxophone player?
Lew Tabackin is, I do believe, the Tenor Saxophone player. Some real good work here, under really difficult conditions. This, by the way, is the only recording of
"Elephant Beer Blues", and Alasandar Metodiev is to be praised for posting.
Why difficult conditions?
Daniel Moerman??? And you are welcome for getting your question answered.
W.L. Barlow Without being sure, i think it's Frank Vicari on Tenor Sax. I know he played with him on the album "Foreign Affairs", and he's saying "Go on and fly on the road a little bit , Frank" at 28.20..
Øver Titangade Do believe you are right.I stand corrected. His effort on "Spare Parts" should be in the annuals ofTop Performances Ever.
What up sir
Here is THE MAN, do you understand me?
We sure do!
Great stuff. Our group's lead singer is very influenced by this music. Check it out if you get a chance. Peace!!

@@primepreowned1 Hmmm...doesn't look like Ron Carter to me but I could be wrong. Thanks!~
IM FUCKN 999 LIK!!!
One question to the Americans who were grown up at the time: could one actually hear a wino using expressions "end of an emotional cul-de-sac?" :)
I've met some poetic winos. You can hear just about anything.
oh, yeah, all the time baby, all the time ...

@@GingerDrums absolutely,love Dostoevsky!
not a huge fan [actually i like his acting chops better] but it just hit me that he was probably the first rapper of all time. whayathank broder

The intro is a lot of lines from his early songs all strung together. I like Waits, don't get me wrong but he recycles his material regularly.
I just don’t fit in
thats definitely a good sign.
Isn't natural that voice he is acting and pretending to be drunk.
Tom Wait changed too many ways his voice depending of the performance. I prefer his natural voice on "Hope don't fall in love with you"
Demonic, no credit to the host
Ida love to drink with this man
