Tom Waits turned 72 on December 7th...How does a 24 year-old crank out a masterpiece album in 1973? This song was written 48 years ago...I'm 68 years-old and I have a funny feeling this scene in a bar hasn't changed at all... 😉 My favorite...
Bro, I found ghis song when I was 13 or 14. I'm 16 right now 😭 please tell me at what point did I have to find this. This is older than my grandparents are, HOW DO I KNOW THIS SONG AND WHY DO I LOVE MOST OF HIS SONGS???
He perfectly captures a universal theme about the one who got away.....the missed opportunity....the missed chance....the heart thumping in the chest feel restrained by fear of rejection or possible hurt....burned in love before and hesitant to risking it again....hopelessly romantic despite claims to the contrary....I'll have another stout.
I have exactly the same opinion. But for another song of that album: "Martha". To clarify: "Hope that I don't fall in love with you" could stand as my third favorite song of Waits, after even "San Diego Serenade"
If this isn’t the best love song of all time, it’s not far off. How you can capture such beauty in what is a drunken 15 minute period is incredible. How many fantastic love songs tell their stories in eternal time frames, with massive emotions and powerful imagery, yet how few can so brilliantly preserve the simplicity of a snapshot. Just one ordinary, insignificant moment in time. Loneliness, hope, and loneliness again, the girl comes and goes and then we’re left with the feeling of what might have been. Tom, you did a really special thing with this one.
Same here. I'm in my early 30s, and this song has a way of taking me back to my very early 20s, falling in and out of love, and staying up until 1 or 2 am listening to Tom Waits.
I went to a brewery in Asheville NC last week and their pint glasses have this on them “”last call for alcohol, ill have another stout. Tom Waits. If course i bought one🎶🎵
I had the biggest crush on this girl way, WAY back in 2002 when I was in my last year of high school. Her name was Michelle. I never spoke to her cause I was too shy. I tried at graduation but never got the chance then. I discovered Tom and this album a decade or so later, and for some reason this song reminds me of her. Wherever she is, I hope she’s okay. 😣
I just broke up with my girlfriend, and somehow this masterpiece brings me a waterfall of tears. Damn, how I miss her... Wonderful girl, wonderful human being, I wish you the best, you deserve it, I wish things had turned out better for us.
A few months ago I met a girl, a fellow musician. We became very close as friends and I stumbled upon this song, half-heartedly thinking it was a premonition. Two days ago we've parted ways because I realized that I was developing feelings for her due to so many mutual things in common. She has a boyfriend and I felt it just wasn't right to unwillingly interfere or break up a relationship. Now I'm back here listening to this song and tears are in my eyes. I feel ya, Tom, I so feel ya.
If you think of the subject of the song, the "you" as some kind of vice: Booze, drugs, women, anything that the singer craves but knows causes harm, it adds a beautiful and haunting layer to it.
AM I LITERALLY THE ONLY TEENAGER WHO LOVES THIS GUY .EPECIALLY THIS SONG. ITS REALLY KINDA SAD HOW NONE OF MY FREINDS NOT EVEN MY PARENTS KNOW THIS AMAZING GUY ..
Ostatnio Wracasz do Mnie po Latach, Drogi Tomie Waits 😊. Kojarzysz Mi Się z Małym Mieszkankiem w Mieście nad Wisłą, Szczęśliwe Lata, Cudowny Czas. A Tom Śpiewał Mi 🌹. I Wciąż Śpiewa. Szczęśliwe Lata. Cudowny Czas Trwa.
Well I hope that I don't fall in love with you 'Cause falling in love just makes me blue Well the music plays and you display Your heart for me to see I had a beer and now I hear you Calling out for me And I hope that I don't fall in love with you Well the room is crowded, people everywhere And I wonder, should I offer you a chair? Well if you sit down with this old clown Take that frown and break it Before the evening's gone away I think that we could make it And I hope that I don't fall in love with you Well the night does funny things inside a man These old tom-cat feelings you don't understand Well I turn around to look at you You light a cigarette I wish I had the guts to bum one But we've never met And I hope that I don't fall in love with you I can see that you are lonesome just like me And it being late, you'd like some some company Well I turn around to look at you And you look back at me The guy you're with he's up and split The chair next to you's free And I hope that you don't fall in love with me Now it's closing time, the music's fading out Last call for drinks, I'll have another stout Well I turn around to look at you You're nowhere to be found I search the place for your lost face Guess I'll have another round And I think that I just fell in love with you
I'd forgotten how beautiful this song is (melody, lyrics, and vocalist) until I heard it used in a movie soundtrack (Flora & Son 2023). I remember first hearing this song on AM radio when it was first released (early middle school for me). That was a magical era for music IMO, so the fact that this song stood out even above the sea of fine music we were swimming in, says alot.
This song perfectly sums up a brief time in my life not to long ago, thank God Jena that you had the good scents to realize that our relationship would cause more harm than happiness and that we met at the wrong time. I wish you all the best. ❤
Fell in love with a beautiful boy. Held each other in the dark keeping warm, making love and listening to a heartbreaking song …. Never forget. I hope others fall in love with this song ..
Why? I have discovered, researched and have some handle on breaking through any industry. I like much about Tom Waits. Being a ballad singer isn’t popular unless that time is right. Doesn’t discount artisty.

Desperately seeking the loneliest souls on earth. Love you Waits.

"...these ole' Tomcat feelings you don't understand..." Simple genius.
You described it so beautifully. A songwriter yourself?
In my opinion, this is his best song. Been a fan for years and years and I always come back to this album and specifically this song.
I have exactly the same opinion. But for another song of that album: "Martha". To clarify: "Hope that I don't fall in love with you" could stand as my third favorite song of Waits, after even "San Diego Serenade"
My thoughts spoken by a total stranger. Just the best.

I think this is my favourite tom waits song
best is a strong word with his quality and output. But it is one of my favorites.
This and "Please Call Me Baby"

The night definitely does funny things inside a man. I’d give anything to be in my early 20s again. Tom has a way of taking me back there, though.

Such a visual song. I can picture the scene, smoky ,low light, music playing softly, and two lonely people
🌹 My favorite Tom Waits song! I have it on vinyl... sounds best on wax. ♥️
Tom Waits first two albums are pure gold
One of the most underrated singers, plus he’s a damn good actor.
Underrated by who? Everyone knows who Waits is.
Makes the tears flow every time I play this wonderful masterpiece!
one of the most original and respectable musicians of any time. Thank You Tom
Best Waits album ever!!!!!!!!!
So true ... many nights listening to this until dawn as a youth ... all good, if tinged with melancholy ... too many stories to tell ... :)
Tom Waits saved my life
IMHO it is his trilogy that's his best (Frank's Wild Years, Moon Dogs, Swordfish).

Now it's closing time, the music's fading out
Last call for drinks, I'll have another stout

Wow ffffffssss. I need to stop crying long enough to put my face on before heading uptown to hit some new bars.

Please, what means "tomcat feelings"? I'm from Brazil and i love Mr. Waits, but some expressions in his songs i don't understand
The phrase "tomcat feelings" refers to strong and often fleeting feelings of attraction or desire for someone, similar to how a male cat (tomcat) might be drawn to a female cat during mating season. It implies a sort of primal or instinctual attraction, one that is driven by physical or immediate desires rather than deeper emotional connections.
So, when Tom Waits sings about "these old tomcat feelings you don't understand," he's suggesting that he's experiencing strong and perhaps somewhat impulsive feelings of attraction for someone, and he's not sure if the other person reciprocates those feelings or understands the intensity of his attraction. It's a way of expressing the idea that these feelings have taken hold of him, even though he may not fully understand or control them.
its a good one
so many people have covered this as a sweet love song... I wonder if it could be done as a drunk old dude sitting at the bar after a long night, seeing some random who buggers off and saying this random stuff to them, completely munted...
Yes
Tom's character was a coward here. "Faint heart never won fair lady." Such a beautiful song. And thankfully Tom got it together later in life and married the beautiful Kathleen Brennan from County Cork.
The more I grow up the more it makes sense
I fell in love though . FFS ... why didnt i listen ....
Wow.... He dont sound harsh, that's his style.
This one is from his debut album and he hadn't started with the harsh voice yet at that point. :) Guess he had to smoke a few more packs of cigarettes first.;) Love Tom!
Doesn't *
I wish I never met that girl. Here's to another night with cigarettes, beer and Tom. And me waking up in my boots tomorrow afternoon.
One, two, three, four
Uno,due,tre, quattro
Well, I hope that I don't fall in love with you
Bè, spero di non innamorarmi di te
'Cause falling in love just makes me blue
Perché innamorarmi mi rende triste
Well, the music plays and you display your heart for me to see
La musica suona e tu mostri il tuo cuore affinché io possa vederlo
I had a beer and now I hear you calling out for me
Mi sono fatto una birra e ora ti sento chiamarmi
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you
E spero di non innamorarmi di te
Well, the room is crowded, people everywhere
Beh, la stanza è affollata, gente ovunque
And I wonder, should I offer you a chair?
E mi chiedo, dovrei offrirti una sedia
Well, if you sit down with this old clown, take that frown and break it
Se ti siedi con questo vecchio clown, prendi quell'espressione corrucciata e cancellala
Before the evening's gone away, I think that we could make it
Prima che la sera sia finita, penso potremo riuscirci
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you
E spero di non innamorarmi di te
Well, the night does funny things inside a man
Sai, la notte fa sentire cose buffe dentro un uomo
These old tomcat feelings you don't understand
Questi vecchi sentimenti da dannaiolo che non capisci
Well, I turn around to look at you, you light a cigarette
Mi giro per guardarti, tu accendi una sigaretta
I wish I had the guts to bum one, but we've never met
Spero di avere il fegato di farmene una, ma non ci siamo mai incontrati
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you
E spero di non innamorarmi di te
I can see that you are lonesome just like me
Posso vedere che sei sola proprio come me
And it being late, you'd like some company
E si sta facendo tardi, potresti volere un po' di compagnia
Well, I turn around to look at you, and you look back at me
Mi giro per guardarti, e tu ricambi
The guy you're with, he's up and split, the chair next to you's free
Il ragazzo con cui stai non ti fila affatto, la sedia vicino a te è libera
And I hope that you don't fall in love with me
E spero che tu non ti innamori di me
Now it's closing time, the music's fading out
È l'orario di chiusura, la musica svanisce
Last call for drinks, I'll have another stout
Ultima chiamata per bere, prenderò una birra scura
Well, I turn around to look at you, you're nowhere to be found
Mi giro per guardarti, non riesco a trovarti
I search the place for your lost face, guess I'll have another round
Cerco il tuo viso perduto, immagino dovrò fare un altro giro
And I think that I just fell in love with you
E penso che mi sono semplicemente innamorato di te
Nice。
