Tom saved my life. I used to leave the radio on while I slept, one night while I was fast asleep his song "On The Nickel" awakened me to a house that was burning the smoke would have killed me or the flames would've. His music always moved me and I was in a very dark time of my life my wife had left me and I missed my kids so very much. God bless him he's the real deal a true individual. I don't know where all that music comes from but it's got to be a special place. He sings for those who lost their way and whose lives are full of pain, he gets me deep down.

Met a hippy kid outside a grocery store many years ago. He told me his uncle was Tom Waits and I told him he was full of shit. He pulled out a photo of them together at Thanksgiving dinner, and I was like daaaaaamn
I picked up Tom Waits in my cab in Phila in 1976. He introduces himself and I mentioned that I had never heard of him. e told me that a lot of people didn't. We stopped at Days Deli on Spruce Street and asked me if i wanted anything. I said no and he bought a sandwich and took it with him to a friends house in Bala Cywyd. Later that year In June I was in London and noticed a sign on the Paladium Theater staying that Tom Waits was performing there the next week. Then I knew who he was! A great Guy! I never forgot it.

It won't ever become 'being' unless you always hold both at the same time. Until then the rewards are very slim. Afterward, still slim until it takes a pleasing form. Maybe next luckiest are those never to really to know but who move easily among a large demographic of similar people, and in a required functional way never need to. This is the first interview I’ve seen of him, extremely funny man, I’m sure if he wasn’t so famous then his humour would go over the top of most people’s heads but because he is famous people give the humour the chance it deserves to be analysed when and if it’s not at first understood!
Some of his early appearances, especially, on Letterman show how ridiculously sharp his wit is. So quick, and very funny. Bright guy who can write some unfathomably dark songs...and some beautiful, heartbreaking ones. Accept no substitution. There's only one model of this particular American.
Although I don't doubt that Mr. Waits meant it when he said it on that bizarre talk show parody in the 70's, that quote had been around since well before he said it. He's the kind of guy that says something brilliant almost everyone he opens his mouth; sometimes he thought of it, sometimes he heard it somewhere before and recognized it's brilliance, so he repeated it and made it better...but unfortunately this one didn't start with him.
In Mr. Waites' appearances on Letterman, you can definitely spot/hear the vocal tics and mannerisms that inspired some of the most memorable aspects of Heath Ledger's Joker. It's all right there...

I once met Tom in a downtown bar in Sacramento. He was playing piano quietly in a corner, so I wandered over and asked him to play Matilda for me. Well, he agreed but seemed more interested in passing the time of day. He noticed my English accent and asked me about that some before noticing my moleskin pants. Wow!! It was like love at first sight. Where could he get them and how much would they cost? I wasn’t sure he could buy them in California but suggested he give me his address and I’d send an appropriately sized pair once I got home to W. Yorkshire. Anyways, I did just that and he and I have been the best of friends ever since. He attributes a large part of his success to our meeting and the wearing of moleskin pants. I like the juxtaposition of a creative artist, original thinker with a subtly profound outlook on life, versus that empty suit and smile sitting behind him not even chiming in on the discussion.
George Clooney is a class act. He once invited seven (I could be wrong but I think it was seven) of his best friends, whom he’d known for years, over to his house one day. These were guys who had helped him out when he first started out. He gave each one a suitcase filled with a million dollars tax free, as a thank you gift. A few of them didn’t need the money so they gave their share to the less fortunate ones among them. I gained a lot of respect for him right then.

I once met Tom in a downtown bar in Sacramento. He was playing piano quietly in a corner, so I wandered over and asked him to play Matilda for me. Well, he agreed but seemed more interested in passing the time of day. He noticed my English accent and asked me about that some before noticing my moleskin pants. Wow!! It was like love at first sight. Where could he get them and how much would they cost? I wasn’t sure he could buy them in California but suggested he give me his address and I’d send an appropriately sized pair once I got home to W. Yorkshire. Anyways, I did just that and he and I have been the best of friends ever since. He attributes a large part of his success to our meeting and the wearing of moleskin pants. So, America, you’re welcome! 😀

My late wife sang Karaoke in a bar in the Florida keys one night with a half in the bag disheveled George Clooney. I was very impressed with his ability to be himself and not display any pretentious attitude and mix in with us regular folk. However, he could have used some of Tom"s New Car Smell anti-persperant that night.

I like the juxtaposition of a creative artist, original thinker with a subtly profound outlook on life, versus that empty suit and smile sitting behind him not even chiming in on the discussion.
George Clooney is a class act. He once invited seven (I could be wrong but I think it was seven) of his best friends, whom he’d known for years, over to his house one day. These were guys who had helped him out when he first started out. He gave each one a suitcase filled with a million dollars tax free, as a thank you gift. A few of them didn’t need the money so they gave their share to the less fortunate ones among them. I gained a lot of respect for him right then.
When crazy people can get away with proving they are normal. all part of life's broad tapestry of what's real. God bless Tom waits and all like you.

Sweet Mother of Pearl..."iconic" seems trite to describe Tom Waits. What a mind. Singer, songwriter, writer, poet, comedian and sharp as a bloody tack. Tom Traubert's Blues is one of the best written songs of a generation. Also...George does not look particularly comfortable...must be the cuffs.
Obviously I’ve listened to his music over the years ( which tends to b of a serious nature ) but I’ve never heard or seen him interviewed before and I’m amazed at how witty he is he’s a very funny guy
His music is often hilarious too. Even when it sounds serious, there's usually some humor to be found.
