The biggest (and probably only thing) I hate about this game is the lack of checkpoints. Naughty dog actually decided that for every 8 sections of a level, they'd put one down. It terrifies me to think if this game had lives.

Jak 2 is finally here! We're now half way done with the marathon with two more videos to go, and while I did give off the impression that this is going to be where I snap, I think the last two episodes are going to be where that happens... Many find this game to be really good, while some find it too hard for its own good. Where do you stand on hard games? I love Jak II, but agree some missions are incredibly hard XD I hardly do the spin jump blaster combo O_o but maybe it's just me XP Hero Mode ironically makes the game easier...asides from a couple missions anyway lol suppose it's cos of the cheats being more accessible *shot* But yep, all Jak is awesome ^^ and I can't wait to see you do more :D

i do like me some hard games (such as dkc tropical freeze) but not always. i mostly prefer games that instead of testing you actually entertain you through other means like charming you (kirbys epic yarn), telling a good story (okami) or make me feel like i'm in an actual place with fascinating people or creatures (the pikmin series). but if there's one level of difficulty i cannot stand its nes to snes levels of difficult. it's just........too much.
Your complaints about difficulty are really strange to me considering I beat the game when I was really little, only once in hero mode is it hard. Also the precursor orbs are for cheats/secrets, weird complaint but you kinda acknowledged that so w/e. I'm not sure why you put so many games on a pedestal above Jak 1. All those games have a lot of different problems and I can't help but feel you're going into this series playing them for the wrong reason. Jak 3 and Jak X are excellent games, I think if you enjoyed 2 you'll probably enjoy 3. Especially if you thought 2 was too difficult for some reason. Jak X is a pretty fun kart racer, although I think you are going to dislike the controls. It's sort of slippery? Idk, I love the game. Also will this be covering the lost frontier?
I love Jak 2. It's one of my favorite PS2 games. Besides one or two really hard segments and driving around too much in the open world I don't really have complaints. At the time the story telling was pretty stellar and tons of cool twist. Also they made Jak a complete badass.
Exactly, people constantly have this stupid belief and stupidly claim that the inclusion of guns was bad or stupid. Because it utilizes the main source of gameplay (eco) from the first game and the series, it actually does fit in perfectly. People fail to grasp this perspective and concept. You're still using Eco in the gameplay, to beat up, kill, and destroy enemies, you just so happen to be using a gun (a device for the eco and a device that was designed in the "future" to utilize eco as a more reliable weapon) this time around. It's no different from a hypothetical eco staff, eco gun staff, eco gloves, etc, and the future setting supports the gun's significance and existence. And ND were able to keep a form of gameplay similar to that of the first game, called Dark Jak. Dark Jak resembles Eco Mode from when you were in possession of eco in the first game by stepping over a vent, and Dark Jak's powers, which he has 4 of, resembles the different ecos Jak was able to use in the first game. Dark Jak *alone* came with 4 powers, the same amount of powers you gained in the first game, from all different types of Eco, not 1 eco type. But as for the colored eco types, all of those returned in different forms via the Morph Gun, so we get more powers, longer time to use eco, more eco to use, and it's overall more fun, therefore the gameplay in terms of the Morph Gun will indefinitely be stupid. Jak 3 only did a massive improvement, so there's no room for complaints on the matter.

If the eco was still outputted by Jak's body in Jak II, but in a similar way to the Morph Gun, I bet you there'd be less complaints.
It really was a perfect fit. The entire game took place in a dark and gritty future, still running on the fundamentals of technology/magic/eco in the first game but far more advanced. The guns were simply a way to more easily utilize the eco offensively and show further refinement of how technology can manipulate it in the future. Guns as the medium was the perfect fit for the tonal shift in Jak 2 as well.

I think I just suck at the game but it literally took me 6 years to beat him. I'm not even kidding. I was 10 when I first got to him and I was almost 17 when I beat him.
I feel like your problem with the game's difficulty is your playstyle. You have to be smart. Pick off enemies from a distance, use your scatter gun whenever you're up close. I honestly never had to use the jump-spin kick-shoot combo. Also, the punch-rapid fire combo with the blaster is a godsend. Use it a lot.
I always played it slow and strategically and I never had too much trouble with the game. It was a little underwhelming considering how hard I'd heard it was meant to be.
Honestly the scatter gun is what I use all the time. But yeah experiment around, if enemies are farther away like the camo mission stick to the sniper, the Vulcan blaster works amazing for firing at those enemies in the dead city
And yeah I agree, I thought it was fairly difficult and I would never say it's easy but I don't get why people make it out as this near-impossible experience. What's even worse is when people use its difficulty as a "criticism"...isn't difficulty a good thing? It just takes patience, and strategy, you should be fine.
one of my biggest grips with this game is giving Jak a voice mostly because that lessens Daxters role. Daxter not only was a comic relief character in the first game but also served as Jaks voice. similar to how Navi does for Link or Aku Aku does for Crash. giving Jak his own voice kinda removes any reason to keep him around. sure they wrote him in to be more important later on but it's just something that always bugged me.
Funny thing I think the first Jak and Daxter was the worst game of the trilogy. Don't get me wrong, the three are good games, but in my case I started with Jak 2, so when I played the original Jak and Daxter it feel like another platformer for me. The change they did was kinda smart because in one way they could distance and stop get compared with older platformers like Crash Bandicoot, the game Naughty Dog did before this one, and also expand the ideas and the world of Jak and Daxter by giving new mechanics and made a more emphasis in the story. In other words, the franchise "grow up" and got mature, at least in terms of that time, things have change a lot since then.
Nido Hime Jak & Daxter is a timeless game..... besides graphics (which could easily be remade) the game has no flaws. JAK2&3 have dated in many ways but to me are still the best of the franchise.
I never had the problem of needing to spin and shoot for every encounter. Beyond that, I think this is a very accurate review of the game as a whole. :)
Personally I find this game amazing and it's one of my most favorite games of all time. The difficulty of this game does get annoying, but you're playing within a totalitarian society, so it totally fits for me and I found it very immersive. I also found the weapons real fun to use, especially on civilians. But I did find a way to fight a bunch of enemies that had guns, especially the kick n' shoot (not the jump spin and shoot). And in the last third, I'll give you the the point with the escort missions, those sucked. But the last third I found some great platforming elements in some of those levels. Especially the mission before you fight Krew, I found some of the elements that may have carried over to Uncharted 2. I'm aware that the difficulty is harsh on many gamers, myself included, but unlike other broken harsh games, this one made me feel great that I completed it and I wanted to go through it all again.
Am I the only person who had a glitch with this game where Weapons Factory had NO bgm at all?? It was silent and it felt haunted cos of that. Anyways this is one of the best games ever imo.
Jak II: Renegade is the best Jak game. If there is a single tough enemy punch shoot with the blaster is pretty good, as you'll damage them and then rapid shoot a few bullets into them.
Jak II music is the best. The game's only problem is being untested and unpolished (cheap deaths, no health refills between missions, too few health points, sucky check points).
@@wojtulacehoe5089 Yes, I know of Mr Zeke. And yes, I watched that video twice. When referring to the unpolished nature, I mean several missions where you HAVE to die a few times, because the game does not explain anything, while having a timer. Timed trial and error is not good game design.
I can understand why Jak is a bit pissed, he lost literally 2 years. He was cognizant throughout the entire time and he knows that he is never getting those two years back which were spent under severe torture and various experiments which led to him getting the dark Jak form.
Also quick tip for enemies, when they all charges at you, the red gun is your best friend especially with the fire rate upgrade. It may not be as powerful, as the yellow gun, but it does cover range, and give you a bit of distance from enemies. Yellow gun for those hard to hit enemies, blue gun, when you being rush so fast to the point the red gun don't help much, and purple gun, when shit hit the fan.
Genuinely one of my favourite games of the ps2 era, I just loved the world and story. I was actually sad the first time I completed it because I didn't want it to be over.
Teenage Jesus I played the first half hour or so of this game (over and over again since I couldn't get past the tank part back then) before I got the first game on Christmas. Naturally I was confused.
Jak 2 is probably my favorite of the original trilogy. Jak 3, its basically the exact same thing as 2. Literally! Recycled characters, along with only one or two new faces. Only difference is a new land to explore, new characters again, and a supporting villain from Jak 2 is now the final boss of the third game.
Am I the only guy who never spammed the Spin Jump with the Blaster? I always just tried focusing enemies into one spot and blasting them with the Spread Gun. Pretty good stuff. I think something I woulda mentioned is how unbalanced the game can be at times. Jak has 8 health slots, but most of the time, he can only take 4 hits. That combined with almost no checkpoints and a gun that has zero reliability at 360 degree aiming adds for what I'd consider one of the hardest games on the PS2. Trust me man; it's not just you.

Even when there's nothing to do in heaven city other than driving, even with no lock on button and even being freaking hard at times I love Jak 2. The story and the variety of missions, the action and everything like that I love.
Somebody might have already told you this, but Jason Rubin (one of the founders of Naughty Dog) actually admitted that they tried to make the game more like GTA. After testing some kind of beta of Jak II on a focus group, they were like "Eh yeah it's okay my *little brother* might like it" "Then what do you play?" "GTA, it's for the cool boys". So it is actually fair to compare this to GTA.
It took me over an year for to complete this game. it's my first video game ever and I had no idea how to play it. And it still is very challenging. It was not a good choice for a complete noob like me back then :D Good times!
first, my favorite is the purple gun. second, i never knew about that yellow gun method, nor do i need it. the game is easy to me and will always be fun.

I'm SOOO happy you didn't bash this game to death as I thought you were going to. This is my favorite game in the trilogy and one of my favorite 3D platformers in general. I think part of the reason why this is my favorite is because I have some great nostalgic memories with this game when I first played it back in 2007, back when I was just a wee little 7 year old. I remember having a total blast with it, even though it was really freaking hard for me, and took me 3 or 4 months to beat it, even though i did play it nonstop. From the boxart that was more edgy than anything I'd seen before, to the gun gameplay, which caught me off guard, to the freaking bomb at the strip mine mission which took me 2 hours to beat and left me infuriated, this game gave me a lot of both good and not so good memories, more good than bad. I still think the game is great, even though some missions are complete pains in my side. I have it on my ps3 HD collection, and it's the game that I revisit on the system the most.
Man, I beat this game without ever using that jump spin kick. Close range combat is so good in this game, with melee being fast and powerful and the scatter gun being a fantastic way to clear out enemies around you. If you can get good at the combat and general feel of the game, then what seems like bullshit towards the end of the game quickly does a 180 and becomes some of the most fun content the game has to offer.

You don't collect metal head eggs to power up dark jack (side note: I like to call them lemon heads). You just have to collect the dark eco (which you do get by killing metal/lemon heads).
Well lucky for me, I had the Guide, so finding the Orbs was a piece of cake. However, from the sound of it, you never played Hero Mode. Well let me tell you, IT IS NOT WORTH IT. In Hero mode the cheats are rearranged so you could, if you collect the orbs, have unlimited Dark Jak early on, but the enemies take more hits. Not a problem for Dark Jak, but Hero Mode makes the Destroy the Gunship with the turret ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. That is the hardest mission for me. And what can you get when you beat Hero Mode? The Mega Scrap book. TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT. Jak 3's Hero mode on the other hand is more forgiving and has a better reward: Audio Commentary of key cutscenes from the developers. That is always nice, Jak 3 Hero Mode has something worth while.

I think that Jak 1 is the best Jak and Daxter game. I love how colorful and varied the levels are. I also love Daxter as comic relief. And its more of a platformer than any other Jak game.
Hmh, about the guns. I actually found myself using every single one of them depending on the situation. Many enemies in a distance: blue Lined up enemies in front of me: red Having fun sniping people, and to get me out of a pinch(spin shots): yellow Just for fun and convinience, my favorite: purple Edit: mainly because switing guns was just pressing a button on the D-pad
I have to say before I thought Jak 2 was the best in the Jak and Daxter series. But after replaying Jak 3, I have to say it was a huge improvement over the 2nd game. It took everything that was good and bad about the 2nd game and made it even better. Its probably my favorite game in the series.
Jak 2 is an absolute masterpiece. The challenge is rewarding. The only aspect keeping it from a 10/10, in my mind, is the mech parts. They're just cumbersome and awkward. However, you can leave the mech at any time, skip ahead, and kill all of the enemies so it isn't a painfully slow slog.

Jak 3 should have been battletoads levels of hard for a 3d platformer. I am just disappointed how it lacked challange.

The final boss was easy? I don't remember him being easy to beat. I had a hard time with him. Ironically, I found his final form to be the easiest.

The final level was hell. It took me 50 tries to finally kill the metal head leader. Don't say its easy because its not.

Funny thing I think the first Jak and Daxter was the worst game of the trilogy. Don't get me wrong, the three are good games, but in my case I started with Jak 2, so when I played the original Jak and Daxter it feel like another platformer for me. The change they did was kinda smart because in one way they could distance and stop get compared with older platformers like Crash Bandicoot, the game Naughty Dog did before this one, and also expand the ideas and the world of Jak and Daxter by giving new mechanics and made a more emphasis in the story. In other words, the franchise "grow up" and got mature, at least in terms of that time, things have change a lot since then.
Nido Hime Jak & Daxter is a timeless game..... besides graphics (which could easily be remade) the game has no flaws. JAK2&3 have dated in many ways but to me are still the best of the franchise.
Peppy saying "use the boost to get through" made me laugh way more than is should have.

I never had the problem of needing to spin and shoot for every encounter.
Beyond that, I think this is a very accurate review of the game as a whole. :)
Personally I find this game amazing and it's one of my most favorite games of all time. The difficulty of this game does get annoying, but you're playing within a totalitarian society, so it totally fits for me and I found it very immersive. I also found the weapons real fun to use, especially on civilians. But I did find a way to fight a bunch of enemies that had guns, especially the kick n' shoot (not the jump spin and shoot). And in the last third, I'll give you the the point with the escort missions, those sucked. But the last third I found some great platforming elements in some of those levels. Especially the mission before you fight Krew, I found some of the elements that may have carried over to Uncharted 2. I'm aware that the difficulty is harsh on many gamers, myself included, but unlike other broken harsh games, this one made me feel great that I completed it and I wanted to go through it all again.
Am I the only person who had a glitch with this game where Weapons Factory had NO bgm at all?? It was silent and it felt haunted cos of that. Anyways this is one of the best games ever imo.
Jak II: Renegade is the best Jak game. If there is a single tough enemy punch shoot with the blaster is pretty good, as you'll damage them and then rapid shoot a few bullets into them.
"invincibility frames.." Dark Souls broke that rule really hard.
Jak II music is the best.
The game's only problem is being untested and unpolished (cheap deaths, no health refills between missions, too few health points, sucky check points).
Jak 3 and Jak 1 music is better imo. Not saying Jak 2 has bad soundtrack.

@@wojtulacehoe5089 Yes, I know of Mr Zeke. And yes, I watched that video twice. When referring to the unpolished nature, I mean several missions where you HAVE to die a few times, because the game does not explain anything, while having a timer. Timed trial and error is not good game design.
I can understand why Jak is a bit pissed, he lost literally 2 years. He was cognizant throughout the entire time and he knows that he is never getting those two years back which were spent under severe torture and various experiments which led to him getting the dark Jak form.
Also quick tip for enemies, when they all charges at you, the red gun is your best friend especially with the fire rate upgrade. It may not be as powerful, as the yellow gun, but it does cover range, and give you a bit of distance from enemies. Yellow gun for those hard to hit enemies, blue gun, when you being rush so fast to the point the red gun don't help much, and purple gun, when shit hit the fan.
Genuinely one of my favourite games of the ps2 era, I just loved the world and story. I was actually sad the first time I completed it because I didn't want it to be over.

Teenage Jesus I played the first half hour or so of this game (over and over again since I couldn't get past the tank part back then) before I got the first game on Christmas. Naturally I was confused.

Jak 2 is probably my favorite of the original trilogy. Jak 3, its basically the exact same thing as 2. Literally! Recycled characters, along with only one or two new faces. Only difference is a new land to explore, new characters again, and a supporting villain from Jak 2 is now the final boss of the third game.

Am I the only guy who never spammed the Spin Jump with the Blaster? I always just tried focusing enemies into one spot and blasting them with the Spread Gun. Pretty good stuff.
I think something I woulda mentioned is how unbalanced the game can be at times. Jak has 8 health slots, but most of the time, he can only take 4 hits. That combined with almost no checkpoints and a gun that has zero reliability at 360 degree aiming adds for what I'd consider one of the hardest games on the PS2.

Even when there's nothing to do in heaven city other than driving, even with no lock on button and even being freaking hard at times I love Jak 2. The story and the variety of missions, the action and everything like that I love.
How Krew has amazingly trimmed legs is one of life's great mysteries.
Somebody might have already told you this, but Jason Rubin (one of the founders of Naughty Dog) actually admitted that they tried to make the game more like GTA. After testing some kind of beta of Jak II on a focus group, they were like "Eh yeah it's okay my *little brother* might like it" "Then what do you play?" "GTA, it's for the cool boys". So it is actually fair to compare this to GTA.

It took me over an year for to complete this game. it's my first video game ever and I had no idea how to play it. And it still is very challenging. It was not a good choice for a complete noob like me back then :D Good times!

I'm SOOO happy you didn't bash this game to death as I thought you were going to. This is my favorite game in the trilogy and one of my favorite 3D platformers in general.
I think part of the reason why this is my favorite is because I have some great nostalgic memories with this game when I first played it back in 2007, back when I was just a wee little 7 year old. I remember having a total blast with it, even though it was really freaking hard for me, and took me 3 or 4 months to beat it, even though i did play it nonstop. From the boxart that was more edgy than anything I'd seen before, to the gun gameplay, which caught me off guard, to the freaking bomb at the strip mine mission which took me 2 hours to beat and left me infuriated, this game gave me a lot of both good and not so good memories, more good than bad.
I still think the game is great, even though some missions are complete pains in my side. I have it on my ps3 HD collection, and it's the game that I revisit on the system the most.
Man, I beat this game without ever using that jump spin kick. Close range combat is so good in this game, with melee being fast and powerful and the scatter gun being a fantastic way to clear out enemies around you. If you can get good at the combat and general feel of the game, then what seems like bullshit towards the end of the game quickly does a 180 and becomes some of the most fun content the game has to offer.

i really loved the racing and jet boarding in this game, it was just too much fun
I never did that spinning thing with the gun and had very little trouble when it came to the enemy rushes. Didn't really mean much in my playthrough.

You don't collect metal head eggs to power up dark jack (side note: I like to call them lemon heads). You just have to collect the dark eco (which you do get by killing metal/lemon heads).

Well lucky for me, I had the Guide, so finding the Orbs was a piece of cake. However, from the sound of it, you never played Hero Mode. Well let me tell you, IT IS NOT WORTH IT. In Hero mode the cheats are rearranged so you could, if you collect the orbs, have unlimited Dark Jak early on, but the enemies take more hits. Not a problem for Dark Jak, but Hero Mode makes the Destroy the Gunship with the turret ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. That is the hardest mission for me. And what can you get when you beat Hero Mode? The Mega Scrap book. TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT.
Jak 3's Hero mode on the other hand is more forgiving and has a better reward: Audio Commentary of key cutscenes from the developers. That is always nice, Jak 3 Hero Mode has something worth while.

I think that Jak 1 is the best Jak and Daxter game. I love how colorful and varied the levels are. I also love Daxter as comic relief. And its more of a platformer than any other Jak game.

I have to say before I thought Jak 2 was the best in the Jak and Daxter series. But after replaying Jak 3, I have to say it was a huge improvement over the 2nd game. It took everything that was good and bad about the 2nd game and made it even better. Its probably my favorite game in the series.
I did the first and third Jak. Now I’m on this one. Wow. I think this one is the best so far. It’s hard as hell, but it’s so freakin good.
Jak 2 is an absolute masterpiece. The challenge is rewarding. The only aspect keeping it from a 10/10, in my mind, is the mech parts. They're just cumbersome and awkward. However, you can leave the mech at any time, skip ahead, and kill all of the enemies so it isn't a painfully slow slog.
I never actually had to do the blaster-spin-jump. The only thing that made the game hard were the gold challenges for NYFE racing honestly
