  • If you're an artist who's ever wondered, "Why isn't anyone listening to my music?", a musician trying to make a name for themselves or an unsigned artist struggling to gain traction, then this video is for you. I understand just how frustrating it is to put your heart and soul into your music, for no one to then acknowledge it.
    In this video I breakdown what success actually looks like - spoiler alert, not knowing your why is the main reason artists give up on their career. If you're not getting heard, this 10 minutes will bring you what you need to turn it around and start seeing green instead of red.

    👇 ABOUT ME:
    Hey! I’m Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is de ply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
    When I was 18, I was signed to a major label and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
    I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my TH-cam channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, TH-cam channel and Social Agency.
    It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

      I always feel held back by the sheer amount there is to do. It feels relentless. Write music, record it, release it, advertise about it, contact press, contact radio, contact playlist sellers (all while still posting on social media) , write more music, advertise it (while not forgetting about all the other stuff)…
      And all this on top of other work that one has to do to pay bills.
      It’s all so overwhelming

    Success for me looks like paying my bills with music. No lavish lifestyle, just living within my means but being able to switch the day job for the music, full time. I know there are stepping stones between here and there. I just did a 30 date tour of the US this summer. A lifelong goal. That was a stepping stone. It takes a lot of hard work and I might never get there but damn am I excited to be trying. Thanks for the great vid as usual Damien.

    These videos are so on point!
    Fear of rejection was holding me back. We're all putting heartfelt meaningful tracks together and making it public means it could all be tossed aside like a used hanky.
    I've just 'released' my first song after 20+ years of being too scared- first I was pleased that several (less than 50) people listened to it and gave positive feedback, but then one person commented that it really resonated with them - I literally jumped for joy and felt validated! That's success for me right now and I'll build on it. Pretty sad, but very genuine! 😂
    The other thing holding me back was not feeling like my music was 'real music'.
    Thank you so much Damian for the squillions of excellent videos - it was the Kaiber AI suggestion that meant I could put my music alongside images and not feel so self-conscious. You also have me thinking about strategies rather than being aimless. I look forward to trying more of the brilliant ideas in these videos...
    Excited & inspired 😊

    Success for me would be being able to attain and maintain a full-time career as an independent artist on a level that is equivalent to a successful mid-sized business. That would include headlining small to medium-sized festivals, being the opening act for larger artists and headlining/co-headlining club and theater tours. It'd also include producing and writing for other artists. A synch license every once in a while would be nice but more than likely an added bonus

    Success for me is seeing a song get completed and appear on the streaming platforms.
    I have circa 40 followers on my first release and am heading for 200 streams.Not a lot compared to others but I am delighted.
    The making of the music is success for me and I can make the music I like and don’t need to worry about trying to please others.

    As an artist, I recently wrote 'find my why' in a journal. The 'why' is definitely intrinsic. My why: I picked up a guitar about 4 years ago - and said that I wanted to get better at song-writing and recording .. the best 'I' can be .. the rewards (i.e. opportunity to grow, collaborate, etc.) follows my why. 😌

    Love this video! For me, success is finishing and releasing songs & playing for people live on a more or less regular basis and - most importantly - noticing improvements in my skills: I always thought song/lyric writing skills were impossible to measure and assess... but recently, all my new song ideas have been NOTICEABLY better compared to all my song ideas from the last couple of years and it makes me so happy!
    Like... when you learn how to ride a bike, you eventually get to a point at which you are clearly able to ride a bike. When you learn to write songs/lyrics, it's a lot harder to tell if you are making progress or if you have mastered it (...idek if there's such a thing as mastery in art...) so whenever i DO notice that my songwriting (or production) skills got better - that's what success is to me! 🥰

    I love playing live. Connecting with others through our music has always felt like the beginning and end of the circle. So, one of our definitions of success is we are trying to play monthly, and make it self sufficient. We are trying to consistently sell out 100 cap venues in two markets in the southeast, Atlanta and Greenville. Our first Greenville show had 14 people. Our first Atlanta show 99 tickets sold. So, building upon that, we have a show in Greenville in November, success looks like 15 people. We also have another show in Atlanta in December. Success there looks like 100 people. We also want to do this without going into debt, make it self sustainable, keeping the fun /joy. Those are a few of our thoughts. Also, we want to write and perform good songs that feel good to play live! As Passman says, we want our craft to “pass the tummy test”. We want to feel good about what we share with the world. Thanks for this great video and message!

  • @stephanorstephan
    @stephanorstephan ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Important take Damian, thanks. Success is relative. At this stage of my career, I'm focussed on driving attendance to my shows, and selling tickets. To do that, it's important to have videos, Spotify links handy, relevant posts on socials, etc, but they're a means-to-an-end. Contrasted with another musician friend of mine who doesn't play live, and is more interested in video plays and Spotify numbers as the goal. One thing I think many artists don't think of is getting in local press. I've found that one good local article can be used to help with bookings and can help tell your story, and is great for socials. 🤠 If anything, I find my live events drive my online numbers, not the other way around.

    That’s a good question… and I have enough answers to why it should not work.
    I have printed out your 1000 Fans in 30 days sheet sheet and it’s sitting on my piano staring at me since days.
    I can do the math:
    sell 1000 fans something worth 100 bucks and you get 100.000 bucks.
    And I have written on paper the 30 inspiring legacy ways on how to get a true fan from the video 3 years ago. I believe they could work.
    But I can’t get the ball rolling. Just afraid to do the commitment, afraid to be vulnerable, afraid of failure and afraid of success, afraid of being just to casual and boring… the list goes on.
    Thank you for every comment here, it’s shows me that I m not alone and the answers inspire somehow 🙂.

    Everyone hates that answer but it’s the only
    Honest one. If you ”succeed” any other way, you’ll come up short if there’s no profit. The profit is what grows the career. However you obtain it is your method. That’s all there is to it.

    For me, success is making the kind of art that I want and not needing to do any other job. It would be great to make the kind of money that would allow me to make the projects that I dream of, but for now I just try to find ways to make the kind of art that I want with what I have. What I realised, is that most of our dreams aren’t meant to come true, but they can serve as inspiration, and often time it’s even more interesting.

    Man, I'm new to you, Damian, but you hit the nail right on the head on whatever you speak from what I've seen so far: defining success, measuring against yourself, being proud of your work, and opportunities, of course - all great topics! Good, great work will speak for itself, without the worker having to say anything.
    I figure me being someone who's not a social media person, you might not be in the right perspective to give in-depth feedback, but I'm pursuing something that I find very few others, if any really, are pursuing or have pursued. I know what I don't want and am not chasing as well as what I want to do overall but 1 aspect of that route doesn't seem to modeled out for me very much. Basically, I'm a 1-man record label with current and future music projects (both solo and group), may pursue live shows for a certain project or so, seek licensing avenues and radio opps, but also want to create more of an experience-environment (online primarily, or at least for the time being). The aim for me is to make all this music thing a living.

This can feel very discouraging at times since it feels like going backwards… But I guess it’s all about the journey!

  • @chent

    Success to me would be to get to that point where you always get a few options. Being at the place where you not only can turn something that seems bad down, but you can do something good instead. I jacked up my prices a lot these last few years, because people know that it is worth it, and I still got pretty much the same gigs. It was getting to the point where I was always busy, and still did not really make much of it, so the sort of places that thought it got to expensive, was not where I felt I was doing the best shows anyway, still it would be nice to get the ball rolling in terms other events and more fun opportunities, than just be doing the same 5 over seas raves 2-5 times every season. Like personally I would like to just say I want to play at that venue, send my manager over and book a date, but now it is more like "we already have a DJ" or stuff like that, even if that venue does not sound very good at all, so we still have more PR work to be done locally.

    Success to me would be putting a band together and doing a small tour of the US, playing my original music. Either that or landing a sideman gig and touring with a bigger artist for awhile.
    What's holding me back? I'm more of a lurker and have a hard time with social media. I mostly just announce my music releases or make the occasional performance video, and try my best to respond to comments.
    It's also becoming pretty clear that in order to promote your music, you need to be a social media personality first (or at least very present online), and the music is secondary. That's really difficult for me because the music and performing are my strong suits. I even have a pretty funny personality in real life, but I don't know how to translate that into success online. I know that the answer is that I need to actually create content and stick to it. I'll try and make something, anything, and post it tonight!

    One of my endgames is to do something like headline Reading (among other things). To be at that level is getting close to the peak. Then trying to maintain that. But the biggest reward to me of being a musician is to be aboe go through that cycle of album/tour/album/tour. For me, going on tour is what you work for, and being able to be on the road for months and months at a time. That’s the adventure, and getting to play shows every night. I’m on my own right now and I need to work on my socials and get another single out soon (as well as starting to play out more).

    Before any campaign (launch of a track, album, gig, tour) you've got to benchmark where you are today - how many followers, plays, gigs/ opportunities do you have - and the more you're spending on it the more strict you need to be with measuring. I know that my music is all vanity publishing, I do it to create music I'm proud of and the ultimate success will be it buying me a drink (covering the costs of recording, releasing it is a distant dream).

    It’s felt like I’m in some sort of echo chamber. People streaming my music, people coming to shows - but always the same people. I feel I’ve made the necessary steps towards growth but I’m still not seeing it. I’m aware how long the road ahead is and that’s great, I’m excited - however this past year my outreach feels way lower than previous years, despite my efforts only growing bigger and more passionate.

    • @DamianKeyes

      Hey Cian, I totally understand where you’re coming from… it’s hard to get outside the existing reach and it all starts to feel a bit static, even though you’re trying to make waves to push forwards.
      Can I ask, are you trying anything different? Something that would really push you out of your comfort zone?
      What would you say you’ve focused your time on this year?
      With the three/four months we have left of 2023, I want to see if we can double what you currently have with the right strategy and prioritisation

      @@DamianKeyes Hi Damian, thanks for the reply. In terms of music and the quality of it, I am more than happy. Each year has shown great progression in regards to my writing, my production, my vocal performance etc.
      Exiting my comfort zone by uncompromisingly being myself and letting it shine through at all times on social media, in conversation, in session, on stage etc.
      However, in regards to brand identity and getting my personality out there, I have been struggling. Like most of the artists I’ve developed an affinity for, there was just something about them that just clicked with me - often times more visually than sonically.
      In this age of content/micro-content, I am struggling to communicate myself in ways that are artful yet attention-grabbing. Time and time again I have tried and tested TikTok, Instagram reels etc, with little evidence of growth. This year, I’ve felt like I’m putting out my best music ever - but missing the mark when it comes to keeping new listeners/viewers around/making them care.

    Goal : I want achieve the sound i looking for after 15 Tracks.
    Expectations: Constant progress at my work, so it will become better automatically.
    Reason : I am an Artist. Drumming, painting, crafting, gaming, producing, writing,
    it doesnt really matter, as long as i can live out my creativity, cause it is compulsive.

    i'm not really feeling held back, but I definitely get a little bit overwhelmed with the social media component of music promo. Since it's necessary to be VERY consistent, and you have to have a presence on EVERY platform and constantly be producing content and thinking of new ideas for content, and since I'm the only member of my band that does any of it (I don't mind this, it's just part of why its overwhelming at times) I get a little bit burnt out sometimes. I also haven't found that sweet spot where my content is getting tons of views, which translates into streams and exposure, and yet its still content that is genuine and that I genuinely think is cool (currently making content I think is cool, but the viewership is low). I don't think the amount of streams or views we're getting at all matches up with the amount of work I'm putting in, but in the end, I do find this game pretty fun, and I think over time we will be able to build up a legitimate enough fanbase for me to feel successful. I feel proud of my music, so I got that!

    In relation to measuring yourself against yourself I've been feeling disheartened since recent music that I've released on TH-cam alone hasn't been getting the same numbers that my (in my opinion) trash demos recieved when I uploaded them on a wim. They were poorly mixed,recorded with my phone and vocals are off key for the most part but they got views and even earned me subscribers.
    The singles are mixed much better, recorded with a condenser, the hooks are good and they are just so much better but I'm not seeing the same numbers. There's an obvious disconnect even though I've been promoting and marketing them and I just haven't found it yet.

    Hi Damian, I need advice as a solo singer, I'm in BIMM and don't know where to start

  • @UniBoy
    @UniBoy ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I make a song. But then, when I listen to other artists I like, I suddenly start to dislike the song I made myself. I don't upload it, because I worry people will think "Yeah, it's fine. Just a normal song."
    I want to make some new type/kind of music, I've even named it something like "Logophons" which means "Sounds of meaning". I want to make music that appear meaningful for some reason(Because I think it's rare). But I fail miserably...

    • @SynnUnsworth
      @SynnUnsworth ปีที่แล้ว

      but how do you know you failed at making that thing unless you share it.... the audience can't give it that chance if you've already decided its failed before its even really began.... like Damien said are you proud of the work, if you're proud then definitely share it, you never know what others might think

    • @DamianKeyes
      @DamianKeyes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is completely normal! What I would do is just start sharing more and not put as much pressure on it - this way you’re sharing songs and ideas, rather than looking for “the one”. It’s a much easier mentality :)
