    👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I’m Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is de ply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my TH-cam channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, TH-cam channel and Social Agency.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

i mean, this is true, but you still want people to hear it. it's not about what they think of it, or whether they like it, but just that people have consumed it besides you. on the internet you are completely invisible by default until you make it over the threshold where your stuff starts getting shared and recommended.

So far the best "How to be successfull in Music" Video i ever watched dispite the fact that the game for a music producer is much much harder than for bands or singer/songwriters or even DJ's... sometimes i'm feeling like selling sand at the desert and i'm constantly in the loop of giving up and committin suic*... nah! but standing up again and continue.. (the loosing game?!)
often i ask myself how to become successfull as a music producer.. where to go with my content? what type of content should i post (i can't sing or can't just dance in front of a camera) and then it strikes me: how about music prodction stuff but then i will get only the musicproducer community (as my audience) and not the listeners i wish for.. ugh im constantly swimming around in the mudd 😞 having problems to make decissions.. I love what you're saying here about the numbers. My band has recently turned down a couple shows because they other members are worried about "over saturating the area." As if every show we play means that the whole city has seen our set and remembers every song and never wants to see it again haha. Back in the day we used to go to shows SPECIFICALLY to see the songs we knew they were going to play, because we liked the band and liked the songs. We hated it when they switched it up all the time to songs we didn't know. Another band I was in didn't want to release anything except 30 second clips of our songs, because they said "it's giving it away." Like really, have you EVER gone to a concert for a band which you've only heard 30 seconds of their songs? In my experience, people go to concerts for bands they love and listen to all the time. There are certainly some crazy mentalities out there....

I feel like the older I get, the less I care to be on it (I'm 38 going on 39).I honestly haven't been on any social media since November 2022 because I just got tired of it; I also felt burnt out with all the music making and just took a break. My day job has been taking up a lot of my time with working over the weekends and working overtime. At this point in my life, its very up and down with my music and its becoming more of a hobby. Y'all, it's super simple - there are three ways to MAYBE make it:
    - The most reliable: know people in the industry/have a shit ton of money to buy your way up
    - The riskiest: shock/outrage marketing (if you don't care too much about haters). Kim Kardashian and her fam are the marketing masters of this technique.
    - The least likely to get you anywhere, especially if you have to work part or full time: grind' for 30 years. :')

And honestly after watching your vidéo I am sure I am gonna give another try ! So For six months of energy you gave me for free , sure you'll get a implicated subscriber ;-) !! Brillant exemple of how to make attractive and efficient content... I realise this post sounds a bit like a sponsorised one ;-). It's actually not. I might be like a lot of person of your audience : A vain and egocentric artist angry not to get the attention he thinks he desserves ! I am still not sure that it makes me like the " THE GAME" , but at least it makes me better understand the rules and respect the great players ;-) Take Care Angebar

I subscribed to your channel. I am an old dog with tons of self written music on my back and I´ve made a TH-cam channel where I upload slowly my own material and some covers. My intention is trying to promote myself to get a chance in the world of music for films, or being an artistic producer for other musicians. My videos reached the astonishing peaks of - with luck - 80 views -. A complete disaster. I am trying to learn the tricks of the trade, and the more tutorials i see, the more confused I become. Of course if my releases are able to make some money, they are welcome! But I have the feeling that the number of hours invested in composing, playing, mixing, mastering video editing are not worth the financial reward at the end of the road. The market is oversaturated, the shorts videos triumphed over videos 4 or 5 minutes long, TikTok is the new trend and I simply cannot stand it etc. I still must learn a lot about these new rules in the music business. Kind regards!

For me it's just a way to regulate my emotions. I can get things out of a song I could never match with words alone. I can explore, reflect on and process my past in a way that no other medium allows. That's what it does for me, anyway.

There are things to help you like this video describes, but it’s really about right place, right time. Plenty of insanely talented people out there who got signed and then fell off. Plenty of shit people who became an international phenomenon.

I think a lot of us hate social media. It stifles productivity if you are using it to consume rather than produce. That being said I thing you should be using it as it is free promotion. @@a2bs333 I've done this for 15 years.... and I have never relied on "friends"....all my friends are also pro musicians which means they don't have time to go to concerts themselves between work, family and music. There is no time.
This is also why most of Damian's advice is impossible to implement in everyday life...
My situation for 8 years has been that there's time for ONE thing besides work and family. So I have to choose between recording/writing music...or marketing...or getting in shape...or nerd out with repairing vintage electronics. So many passions, so little time.
I choose mostly making some music at the home studio to upload to youtube. Which then hardly gets any views. But if I have to go into marketing then there's no time for music.

I'm writing and recording the best music of my life over the past few years, and it's been like the proverbial "tree falling in the wilderness". No one is listening, so am I actually making a sound? You're obviously a type A personality, and I dig your advice - it makes total sense to me why you're doing well. However, many musicians and songwriters are decidedly NOT type A personalities (I'm talking about myself here), and would kill to have your organizational skills and business-minded demeanor. I'm not sure if that particular flaw is fixable, unfortunately.

Then just keep on grinding and looking for the 1% improvements over time. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

@@DamianKeyes I have several music videos on my TH-cam channel that I've put serious time and effort into, but what I thought was my "Dark Side of the Moon" has not resonated with the demographic that still likes rock n roll. And I can't change who I am or change my musical sensibilities whilst remaining true to myself. To that point, here's a tip for anyone who cares to learn from my mistakes: artists like Roger Waters, U2, Springsteen, etc. can get away with taking a public position on controversial topics; a lesser known artist writing in protest about social issues will probably just alienate a large portion of their audience. But dammit, I'm still proud of what I produced. Just me and my falling trees.

Whether its music, puppies, selling clothes, making money, making funny shorts it is rare to see someone create today for the love. Its always geared around the algorithm. So much u have to ask does the creator even believe in the product that they are selling? Would they use it? Do they like it? Do they even care? It literally can be any product or service that this can apply to.

Very true although I would say the music doesn't always have to be as instant but the content does as that's the bit with context. I reckon Pink Floyd using the riff of Money or Shine on You Crazy Diamond would kill it as they would get the context, the story and the hook for the vehicle of todays promo. PF were genius and used the features of the time but I feel like they could adapt in the same way a pro athlete of yesteryear would adapt given todays technology 🙂

Hi i’ve been thinking about it for a few last weeks and You know what ? Things are NOT going well in music Business. Music became so devaluated in Last four years (COVID era) that treating it like a business is irrational. There is no ROI for like 95% of artists or maybe even 99% if you Take your art seriously and pour money into decent recording studio, music videos and (social) media promotion/marketing. Getting Live gigs are also harder than ever (current economy) if you are more than a solo/duo act. Even artist with decent numbers on Spotify and TH-cam struggle for gigs what was inimaginable 10 years ago. You are better if you make frequent, low cost, lower quality, short music snippets on your social media channels but sitting in cave talking/singing to camera for years doesn’t feel exciting - more so if you are passionate about your musicianship. Another take is that i had more opportunities and money playing covers with cheap PA, mic and acoustic guitar than investing 25 000 USD in my art, hiring musicians, booking top class studio, recording and releasing album with music videos, radio air play and Spotify curated playlist promotion hoping that industry and people appreciate it and it’ll bring opportunities for a career. Right now im so disillusioned with current music industry that I’m into lowering my standards to meet the zeitgeist or shift my focus, time and energy to more rewarding activities. My Last few words is that with music as opposed to other industries You can make the best You can or even more and in the end of the day it wouldn’t be enough. There is Always some kind of MOJO going with music career but people who makes Music forget about it and people like you @damiankeyes dont want to remind them about it.

As long as you live somewhere online in a place that people can access and get value from you and your music then you can win. Busking on an island could be an incredible story for socials if you tell it right.
If you want to be a studio musician on an island then make sure you have good links to the mainland or your own studio 🙂
