Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I'm also a bass player, I've played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you're not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my TH-cam channel - I've been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a 'niche'! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, TH-cam channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.

@@simon_patterson Yes and what I am saying is, whenever I hear the word 'content' - from anyone's mouth - it seems to imply inherently, that it is more important than 'quality'. Content rich world out there...and sad as it is, most of that 'content' is rubbish. ATB.

Great video, probably great strategy. Lot's of work pays out in the end - I totally agree. Howeve this got me overwhelmed and makes me mentally paralyzed. Figuring out how to make this whole video/micro-content making/currating/editing/branding/uploading/promoting/followup thing frictionless for someone who is not a youtube-star or influencer or Gen-Z / Millenial is not simple and not "a no brainer"

Some of us work and are not content creators what do you suggest
It’s about finding a bit of time and understanding how to batch quality content that helps. Yesterday we shot 30 pieces of content in 2 hours which is a months worth. I will be making a video on this soon to show how. Until then, you have to find slots and make 2-3 pieces of micro content a week to help push you and your music 😊

1000 plays in the first week. I haven't hit this goal before, but looking at the bigger picture, it truly is possible.
Also: What's your opinion on when to release a music video? Release on the same day or out on spotify first and then release?
I’m not too sure but I think do it at the same time. This way you can get even more traction. Like because people will hear the song for example and then go check out the visual aspect of it. I think that was a really is no right and wrong answer I think it’s all just about personal preference. Although if you are trying to make releases more often than releasing the music video a month or so later may be a good idea. That way you can release a song and make that a big deal and then a month later released a music video and make the big deal the song go longer. Really up to you.

My ear is damage and doctors cant tell me what it is but im putting out the song i mixed and made before my ear felt so bad i dont know if my equipment or my mic is broken because my ear makes music distorted too.
So this song im putting out means so much to me its the 7. Song
I still do music but its probably not mixed as good or sounds that good because i cant even make music sometimes because with my ears everything in mono sounds stereo my ear has problems telling what ear the Sound should go to its so annoying.
But these videos are Motivation i got 7 songs online at least one as preorder
And i have Not made enough promo content for them i teach myself how to make good music videos on phone or (mini music videos) to push them they are assets and can still be discovered.
But First let me push my masterpiece i made when my ears and equipment felt normal.

I have a doubt> If I have 4 or 6 weeks to release the Single (or EP) and I need a Link for the whole content, is it possible to upload the EP on SHopify 6 weeks before the Release Date? If NO what link should I add during the promo? Maybe soundcloud?
Yes, if you upload to Spotify in advance you get a "pre-save" link for people to click that will then send the track them on release day

i think all music industry advice should start with: "just bare in mind, unless you have a potential smash hit up your sleeves, nothing i'm gonna say now will help you".
Interesting.. I think the great thing about now is it’s more about quality of the artist combined with quality of consistent songwriting.. adding in context and interesting traits and you can build an audience..
Bands like Khruangbin don’t have a smash hit record.. but they do have 5m monthly listeners.. that’s due to their niche, their quality and consistency 😊

How I can get my album to on billboard charts ?!
Let’s start with a smaller goal then this, massive goals normally end up to frustration and burnout, we work in phases. Let’s start by working towards 10k streams on a song and 1000 fans and go from there :)
Start by doing everything he said in the video then release more music and do it again. Repeat until you get the desired results. 🔥

I guess its a sign that i need to get better at playing and singing but i'm just never happy with any take enough to say its done and i tinker endlessly with rerecording things, especially vocals, allways some piece of phrasing or timing i'm just not happy with. Its a pity I feel i have some good songs, that nobody ever hears. I'll release a single tomorrow, but tomorrow never comes.
I get it. Here’s a suggestion. Record a certain number of tracks let’s just for this example say 10. Record 10 different versions and tinker around with all of them. Then choose the best one. Tell yourself that unless you’re really really bad you can’t re-record it. Part of that tinkering around could also be editing the good parts from each of those contracts into one even better track. But you’re not going to let yourself record 100 more times. I hope this can help and if you have any questions let me know. I wish you all the best luck

Damian, I have followed some of your advice for my first two Alt Rock singles 'Dante's Discos' and 'Psycho Paradise' (Spotify & TH-cam).
According to Spotify, over the past few weeks 'Dante's Discos' has had 160 listeners BUT 2,935 streams in Helsinki. What do you think has happened, Damon? Surely someone in Finland hasn't listened to it nearly 3,000 times! I have not been informed about any Playlist that I might be on.
[However, BBC INTRODUCING told me a couple of weeks ago that they had sent my songs to one of my local (Wiltshire) radio stations. (Maybe they sent it to Helsinki by mistake?)]
I don’t know I’m sorry. I wish I could help out more. Could you perhaps be a scam. Not your music no no no but robots on Spotify who click on the song but then don’t listen to it. I’m not really that great on Spotify and so I’m not too sure of the exact logistics but I know that has unfortunately happened to many other artists before. another thing could be a glitch in Spotify. So it’s not your music but Spotify glitching before it plays your song for whatever reason. Maybe if there’s a number or a email or a social media account reach out to Spotify and ask. They may be able to give you some troubleshooting methods or suggestions. I know I’m kind of late on this reply but I hope it can help or help other artists reading this, in the future
when you say include a link to the song... would that be direct to Spotify rather than other platforms? or rather than any linktree?
I think it depends on the artist. A link tree may be a great idea because then many links are there. That way if someone doesn’t for example have Spotify they can still listen to your song on TH-cam. If entries are too difficult you could also create a website. On his website it could be your central page and so all of your links are there. I think so thinking about it a link tree is going to be easier but the website can also be useful. Like if you want to sell your merch and stuff as well hope this can help
I love your videos very informative! I have a problem 😢I released my song on Dec 2. I did some pre release promo but not nearly enough. I’m horrible on social media but I try. I’m going to use your strategy to do better. It’s day 3 of the release didn’t do anything yesterday which was day 2. Please what should I do from today to gain the momentum and get more listeners etc??
Oh no. I have two ideas which I hope will help.
Number one to send out an email. Gather some of your email contacts and ask your friends if they have anymore. In the email tell him about your new song and explain who you are and what type of music all of that details.
Number to make it evident. For example if someone comes over to your house have your music playing. This can be subtle but just have it playing. There are other ways you can go about doing this subtle example.
I’m a few more ideas!
Bring it up in conversation. If you see a place applicable mention that you’re releasing a new song. Tell people about it. Coworkers friends family members who never really
My last idea is try your best on social media. If you send out the email mention your accounts. Only focus on one or two accounts at a time so that it doesn’t become overwhelming. Ask your friends and family members to follow you and just try your best. There really is no harm and as your practice you’ll be able to build up on your skills and your contact will get better.

Hi there. I’m not 100% sure on this but I’m going to share my opinion I hope that can help. Too A live video no matter where it is there are a few factors that I think you need to take into consideration. First when would you do this live stream. If you have people all over the world it may be tricky to get them all together at one time. You can find out some of this information in your analytics section. Second how long would it be. If you’re only going to be talking for one or two minutes it may just be easier to make a video. But if you’re planning to do a question and answer session for example or a video that may be longer than going on live is a great idea. Surd and lastly is least important but it’s your concept. Actually maybe it’s the most important. And wait for me I have seen many musicians go on live and make videos and it isn’t just in the music industry. basically they will make videos or go on a live stream and talk for maybe 20 minutes because they feel they have to. But that kind of just being a waste of time unfortunately. You know they aren’t doing what they want to accomplish with doing that project and they leave it feeling disappointed. Rather than you know feeling happy and like they just use your time wisely. I’m sorry if this came across a little blunt. If you have any questions let me know i’m just trying to share my opinion from a fellow musician

Hey Damien, already subscribed and watch your vids bro - quick question , im told i cant release on my new song on my own youtube channel first OR ELSE in 1 or 2 weeks when my song gets released on spotify the chances of spotify playlisting it is more or less ZERO. so ... should i release on spotify first and then push the song for 7 days and THEN release the song video on my youtube channel OR in this time SHOULD I FIRST RELEASE THE SONG/VIDEO ON MY OWN CHANNEL FIRST and then let it drop on spotify in 2 weeks and maybe there still might be a chance the curators there could still playlist it ??
- P.S i havent released for 1 year and my spotify is Dead , my youtube pops off way more than my spotify.. unless uve answered my question in this video indirectly saying spotify first for 7 days push it on all socials and then say 8 on my youtube yeah b ? Thanx
I’m not sure but here’s my opinion. If your TH-cam pops off more than posted on TH-cam first. This is because of the better likelihood that it’s going to have more success there. You don’t even have to wait a week but let’s get through the week cause that’s what you used. A week later than posted on Spotify and in a description of your TH-cam video you could mention your Spotify. That way hopefully people will stream it there as well hope you can help
