      Typically what people mean by "fun" is a combination of unpredictable, fast paced, flashy and risky. Personally I get bored very quickly when that's all a game has to offer. I get way more enjoyment out of predictable slower paced and unassuming games where I can figure out how to avoid risks.
      This quote annoys me so much because devs often remove the option to have fun my way and instead force me to play with a bunch of unecessary constraints so that I have "fun" their way.

    All three of them enjoy the feeling of progress or seeing improvements, the difference being Connor enjoy's the progress of skills, while Joey and Grant enjoy's the progress of characters. Basically Connor is 'Skills>Gains' while Joey and Grant is 'Gains>Skills'. So if they were to play a game like Dark Souls, Connor would enjoy learning attacks and timeing, while Joey/Grant enjoy Upgrading and improving stats.

      Connor is also more intrested in the mechanics of a game and how to get better at it. So hes like competitive and "selfish" when playing games because its all about him beating the game and being better than others. Which is why he prefers multiplayer games and skipping cutscenes. Garnt and Joey prefere immersing them selves with the characters, world and atmosphere. This is also why they are more into anime than Connor

      Yes. Competitive gaming is a choice, the vast majority of gamers just want to have fun or be engaged in a game for an extended period of time.

    Ok here's the thing. Every single person engaging in a competitive activity will eventually hit a wall. Even if you are the best in the world you'll eventually hit the wall of never surpassing your past self. Competitive activities can be divided into subsections where rewards are attainable, even if the "end goal" is not, and so can be satisfying basically forever unless your luck is so rough that you don't generate any sufficient reward mechanism in a very long time or just find something that is even more rewarding. You can't be rank #1 at chess? Well, maybe grandmaster, maybe regional winner, maybe just the best among your friends or just a solid 90% winrate against your pet hamster, it can still generate a satisfying result. I am currently trying the league climb and maybe I'll just reach Gold 3 and never have the time or will to put more into improving. But damn if it's not fun wrecking fools in this game, even if you lose, even if you have a sub 50% winrate, those relatively few times when you get in the zone and even go toe to toe with smurfs makes it worth it. The game can start occupying less of your time as you move through life, but it's always enticing enough for just this spicy daily game

    • @Exel3nce
      @Exel3nce 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never ever entered the zone in league.
      Which is weird I guess. Only happened two times on a different title tho

    • @mikeowensebagenzi782
      @mikeowensebagenzi782 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah entering the zone is something that can only happen with competitive games for me. Because you're against someone else and that person is pushing you, you enter a state of peak awareness. Which is why I love fighting games because it's that but compressed in a 5-10 min match of constant challenge

    • @victort.2583
      @victort.2583 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, if you know someone with a 90% chess winrate against their hamster, could you ask them to give me some tips? I got a pet rock, and honestly... it's pretty good.
      I'm not good at League (been Gold 4 pretty consistently; starting this season in Silver), but yeah, there are some games where you feel like you're playing at your best, and the opponent is dead even with you, and you're both looking for an edge, and there's an adrenaline rush that feels great. That's not to say League is perfect, or developing a "League addiction" is justified, but it has its moments, to be sure.
      While we're at it, I think optimizing a game (mobile games included) can feel kind of fun, at least in that there's some thrill in "solving" it - maybe like figuring out a crazy trick in an open-world, exploration-driven game like Breath of the Wild.

But a game with 100 plus hours of gameplay and story like for example persona or final fantasy, you meet characters in a whole diffrent way. They feel just more authentic. Well thats of course only the case if its a good written story within a game but that also goes for the movies. I dont know I feel more emotinally attached to if it feels like I interacted with them. I agree with Connor, learning a new skill is actually therapeutic for me too. Where gacha games feel like a less stressful mental break from the world. However I feel guilty playing gacha games. They don't make make me feel proud of how I spent my time. I'm never trying to be the best at something, but I like seeing myself adapt new skills. Which carries over to my ability to adapt skills in other parts of my life. Learning how use a character in a fighting game, gives me confidence to learn how to run a new program at work.

Joey's question to Connor asking him how isn't he tired is pretty much my response to Connor too. Connor's words that it doesn't make sense to 'progress' towards a goal without actually progressing definitely shook me though because that's kind of inarguable. Connor is probably just fundamentally logically-oriented.
    It's hard for even ourselves to pinpoint why exactly we have certain preferences though, it's more of an emotional thing rather than logical. But somehow, we managed to get a single ace after that. In no more than 10 seconds, the enemy gave up. After that, everyone just immediately left the after game chat. I realized that no one was having fun that game. We were getting aced, but all the fights were taking place near the enemy base. Moral was down on both sides and everyone just wanted the game to end. This was a super close game, but I just felt empty afterwards.

    I swear I either agree so much with Connor or I could not disagree harder. This time I agree. League is not a grind and its not the same as speed running. I specifically always have at least 1 multiplayer game to play at a time because it is always a new challenge everytime because of the change in players, etc. Losing is part of the game. To quote a meme, "mission failed. We'll get 'em next time." You lost, but you rise up and play better the next time. Gatchas are just i do things that take up time to get numbers to because the next thing to do requires bigger numbers. There is no skill involved, it barely even occupies the mind.
    Speedrunning is just masochism. You work hard to do the least amount possible, and you spend 3 months to cut a 10 hour game to 10 minutes. It is insanity, not a new challenge. If i'm going to spend that much time on something that i repeat over and over again, I need to walk away with a a masterpiece, not a clock time.

      Agreed.
      When Connor said " *Fuck off, no League player would ever say that.* " , it was like he truly spoke for all of us.

    I always drop any competitive ranking based game in 2/3 months. The longest one I played is probably pubg for a bit over 3 months. They just don't feel rewarding enough for me to continue after enjoying all the mechanics the game had to offer. Though I enjoy watching others play these games on TH-cam.

    Losing league is a waste of 40 mins but winning a game is like a direct adrenaline shot

    League is a drug, and it also gives you the toxicity drug.

    Then there's those games that mix progression and self-improvement that became so popular on the early 2010's, Agar.io, Cookie clicker, etc, that aren't mechanically challenging and take longer to give you a feeling of stagnation.
