Beta fish are a good fish but because their so popular the pet trade has issues with inbreeding and due to surten big company's breeding betas to have bigger and bigger tail fins beta fish these days have a far far shorter life 😢 their are 2 species of bata fish thay have very big tail fins due to selective breeding but becase of this they have a hard time swimming and the bigger tail fins breeds have a far shorter life span due to complications in their body's along side bad inbreeding in other words beta fish these day live far far shorter life spans the bata fish for 10 years ago where the pet trade for betas was far smaller and they didn't have company's geniticly modifying the to have have bigger tail fins

10:10 . Thank you for your words. My betta swam in a heavily planted 13 gallon tank, parameters and everything always checked off as good. He made it to a year, before he passed a few weeks ago. When I noticed he wasn't doing great and had some sort of swelling on one side of his face and a white spot around his gills I went to my lfs. They sold me something to treat him with and something extra for the tank. So I put him in a seperate tank, treated him for one and a half weeks. At first it seemed to help, the white spot disappeared, but the swelling didn't. Once he was only moving to get some air every now and then, I knew that there was no happy ending. I put him back into his original tank, where he laid on the plant leaves for another day and a half, before he finally left.
I still have the tank, continuing a long term treatment. I don't want to give up fish keeping, but niether do I feel like trying once again.

3:20 I was actually impressed they knew that much, didn't go for the smallest tank, and at least made an attempt to make it somewhat natural while still appealing to a little child. It's not perfect but they clearly did SOME research or listened to the advice of the store employees. While the fish isn't in a 100% perfect environment, it's in a fairly great one, and a far better one than most of its shelfmates will likely go to.

@Shala Cooper in the UK it is Pets at Home. My local branch (Stafford) is a good store, knowledgeable, friendly staff who do care because my female got seperated during mating season whilst i cycled my tank up waiting at home.
However, a store in the North West several years ago I called out for their treatment of fish. They knew me in there and after some 'persuasion' I rescued and rebilitated a few. They didn't care at all.

As someone involved in the BDSM community, I can say that when done right, BDSM involves clear, direct, and honest communication between both parties, empathy and direct negotiation, and lots of safety measures, including safe words. These fish, however, had none of that and were treated with none of the finesse, respect, and gravitas that is expected in BDSM. God fucking bless TikTok.

oh my goodness, that Shrimp bowl was absolutely gorgeous.
I recently got a Betta (Gogi) After a long hiatus. My last one passed away after six years and I was just brokenhearted.
so I was in a very good pet store and saw Gogi and fell in love.
For some reason, he loves tiny little spaces, and I would see him in the most unusual positions between pebbles etc.
I double checked everything in the tank to make sure there were no rough edges, but about a week after I found him wrapped around a rock on the bottom of the tank being very lethargic.
it looks like he got into a small space and scraped a large part of his scales off one side of him.
being Canadian API products are not available.
it was important to me to make sure his tank stayed clean and he didn’t get any infections.
because he was weak, I did a complete water change, cleaned everything out, and lowered the water level so he could go up to gulp air.
i’m not ashamed to say that I had tears in my eyes a couple of times, hoping he would make it.
with water changes and salt in the water, slowly, he came back, and now he is just doing fantastic, his side is now almost looking normal.
I get beyond angry when people treat fish as if they are not a living creature.
they have as much right to life as you and I and our dog and our cats.
I have the toughest little Betta fish in the world.
and yes, I know people are gonna sound crazy but I love that little guy because he made it. 💕

I agree. I'm not a live plant person, don't know if i ever will be. I do have the house plant out the tops of my tanks and love that I'm able to keep those plants alive and adding some benefits of the planted aquarium style.
I have halloween mixed "clown puke" from my earlier days, am slowly pulling that from tanks and sorting the colors it's tedious and will be worth it. 2 tanks I still want themed; beetlejuice and Nightmare before Christmas. I found a love for larger rocks and driftwood.
I keep up with the tank maintenance and fish health like a freaking hawk. I'm happy most importantly my fish are too.

Dude seeing the copter fish reminded me of this story.
For background, my dad hates animals. They all love him. All dogs go to him for scratches. Cats lay on him. He will pet them and let them lay on him, but he doesn’t really like it. What he does like are fish. He always had a tank when I was a kid and actually helped me buy and set up my first one. My favorites were always the Bristlenose pleco, but I remember I had an upside down butterfly fish that I also really loved.
Anyway, I was little and had a few friends over. While I was showing them my dads tank something black with one milky white eye started to crawl out of the shipwreck centerpiece. Naturally, we were like wtf and I went to get my dad.
He was like “dang I guess it’s his time.” Turns out there was a fish (I genuinely don’t remember what kind) that had lived in that ship FOR YEARS. He literally never left. Only my dad remembered he was in there and the only reason he was coming out is because he was dying of old age. Dude sure looked like an old man. Talk about eccentric. People who say fish don’t have personality have never had any 😂

I’ve lost so many bettas to illnesses (or possibly even bad genetics) out of the blue despite being very meticulous and doing everything right. I’ve talked to my coworkers who are more experienced in fishkeeping and they’ve told me that it’s not my fault since the pet store bettas are already super fragile. I’m trying to convince myself that even if they only live for a few months after I get them that I at least gave them a better home than the cups they come in (or being shoved into a ‘self filtering’ .5 gallon tank) but sometimes it gets hard to tell myself that. Also my first ever betta was named Phoenix! I had him for for 2-4 years when I was in middle school and high school. Yesterday I got a betta for my tank at a discount from the store because his tail was heavily damaged. I’m keeping an eye on him but hopefully he bounces back and makes a recovery in his new home (5g planted tank).

There’s people that adopt senior dogs to give them the best life before they pass. Considering what you’ve said about Bettas, you’re doing about the same for them. If the fish you get dies fairly quickly with you, that’s better than dying quickly in an improperly set up tank.

I have some social anxiety but also love fish. Once, when I was like 14, I saw a group of girls buying a fish with a round and small fish bowl. I eventually managed to convince myself to overcome my nervousness and tried to kind of politely and nervously be like “hey, that bowl looks a little small, a round bowls can stress out fish a lot because they distort their vision…it might be better for the fish to get a different one?” and they just giggled and were like “ummm ok?? 😂” and looked at me like I was an idiot and bought it anyway. To me, it kind of proved that the type of person who holds little regard or politeness for others is often also that way with animals, it was just sad.

It might be tacky to a regular hobbyist who prefers the more natural looking landscapes, but honestly as long as the fish has what it needs I don't see anything wrong with the neon pink cheap looking stuff, they'll probably update it later when they start looking at it in comparison to the rest of their house and realize it's a little uggo. Better for the fish to have cheap hideouts now that get better with time than to have nothing at all

Idk why people brag about having a small tank. For me the bigger the tank the better. I have a 4 ft tank filled with dozen school of rummy nose and 6 red line terpedo. Cant wait to upgrade, will add more rummy nose. Love the way they swim together

Years ago I watched a short video on youtube of a fish in a round bowl that was maybe 2 cups of water max, with a few marbles in the bottom and a bright flashing/color changing light. The comment section was filled with disapproval, and him responding along the lines of "lmao it's just a fish, calm down" . My heart breaks every time I walk into a pet store and see shelves full of tiny tanks. I know they still sell them because they still sell.

Absolutely a TH-cam type of guy. I don’t really have a preference for short of long content, I’m ready to get into 3h deep dives on any subject as long as the videast keeps my attention. If it gets too long, I take a small pause on TH-cam shorts and then I can go back to the longer stuff

My gorgeous betta died of what might have been a tumor. It was fleshy and just kept growing, no fin damage or sluggish behaviour. I cried for two days! He wound up in a 20 gallon planted tank because that's what we had, just him and some snails, but what a life! He actually has a little painted headstone in my garden. Fish are smart and can bond with people.

The only reason impulsive and fish keeping went together for me only because my entire life my dad kept a 55 gallon tank that I helped maintain growing up and I already had a tank seeded from a pond that I kidna- I mean adopted some newts from, so it had the full nitrogen team and plenty of little cleaner critters, lots of space plants etc. I just wanted fishies. The newts only seemed to be unhappy about the fish for a month but they were from a pond with fish so they got used to them and lived happily for years, I’m down to one nest right now… 😢 I Miss them. They’re so beautiful.

When I was younger we always had betta fish, and always had them in smaller tanks. I just got my own betta fish, and when I told my friend I was getting one, she told me to make sure I get a 5 gallon tank or bigger, and I'm so glad she did. I was going to get a 2.5 gallon tank. But now I've got my fishy in a 5 gallon, with live plant and everything. I've learned so much, and now I want to get a 10 gallon tank.

I'm always worried when I see parents buying fish for their kids. There are probably a few who actually go behind their kid and check to see if they are properly caring for it and help and scold them if they are slacking off, but there are likely plenty of others who will happily let the fish die a drawn out death just to be a "learning experience" for the child when it finally dies and they come crying to them . If they want something to let their kids independently practice responsiblity with, I think they should just get them a Tamagotchi or some pet raising app, and not use a living creature as a guinea pig.

My baby sitter when I was younger had a betta in a prob 1 gallon bowl. I swear that thing lived forever cause despite it being in such a small bowl she took amazing care of it! Routine water changes and feeding. I think that was def a step up from a tiny cup at a pet store.

I have a betta fish all by himself in a 20 gallon tank. I do NOT get fake plants only the live plants, so his tail stays pretty. I let the tank cycle for 9 months (because of the live plants) and I also got him from a special breeder, other than that. When he is sleeping I am scared he died, when he won’t eat (sometimes) I am so scared, he is like my own son. I don’t understand how people can treat bettas like a decoration, my betta is practically apart of my family by now.
