Testing a CSF Intercooler on our F87 M2 GTS

  • We've used CSF's products on many cars and found them to always perform well. You may have seen us fit the CSF N55 intercooler to an M2 before, and also a 435D, but it was time to properly test the intercooler on our own M2 GTS, Starla.
    The car is running our Stage 2 ECU tune, along with Supersprint Decat downpipe and V2 Eventuri Intake.
    Our testing confirmed what we'd seen before, that the CSF Intercooler for the N55 is unmatched in terms of performance, along with value for money.

    Good video, no BS, proper testing and good video editing! With multiple pulls gear after gear the difference in IAT and power will be even bigger as the stock IC will get heatsoaked badly.

      Would you say the huge dip in ignition timing half way through 5th is as a result of knock? The way the timing drops to 4 degrees doesn't seem linked to iAT (unsure when these actually start to pull timing due to iAT? Do you know?) but it looks like it detects knock and pulls timing, then starts to reintroduce it as you see the timing climbing back up to towards 10

    What was the ambient temperature when you did those logs?
    It's very useful to see the delta between outside air and the IAT's.
    I had Wagner EVO2 FMIC on my N54, and absolutely loved, done ton of logs on it before and after, and I thought it was really effective. It's also a tube and fin intercooler, so it was super light. I believe CSF is bar and plate design so they're quite heavy (worst location to add weight to the very front-end of the car).
    Tossing between repeating Wagner again for the M2 or go CSF this time.

    Imran, love the vid and LOVE the car! What side skirts did you have installed on that M2? I've seen the M Performance ones that are only winglets, and I've seen the Chinese knock-offs with tacky triangle-shaped winglets on them, but not the flat ones that go all the way down the running boards like those. Where can I get these for my M2?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jason! They are M Performance ones from the M4 cut down to suit the M2. We can also supply the RKP carbon ones which are made specifically for the M2. We have them for our car and are waiting to put them on.

  • @chippyjohn1
    @chippyjohn1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whats the weight difference, the aftermarket has a lot more thermal mass so it will keep the air cooler for longer but will take longer to cool down. Doing a run for a couple of seconds is not fair, you should do a 5 min stress test. Also the factory cooler fins are largely bent over restricting air flow.

  • @Julzenago1

    Stock intercooler looks like a lot of the fins have been squashed (likely to small stones through lower honeycomb mesh?) I would say this would have some performance impact as it looked about 50% closed. (Feel free to correct me if the is no performance drop). If that's the case it would probably be advisable to install some stainless fine steel mesh to front of intercooler to protect it. What do you think? (Not trying to criticize your product)

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it has some light stone damage but the car has made the same power every time we have dynod or Vbox tested it. We have also done this test before on other N55 cars but not published results and the results are the same.

    Is there an FMIC you would recommend on a stock M2 for improved cooling but no introduced turbo lag? I would like to have a better FMIC for the health of the engine but I also really love the lack of lag in the M2 and do not wish any increase in lag whatsoever..

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We would still recommend the CSF in this case.

    Can you safely reach 400 WHP on a N55 such as a M235I and
    435i? with full bolt on and a stage 2 with keeping reliability and not using methanol
    or ethanol.

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The figures on this video are calculated crank figures. 400whp is not possible on the stock turbo on pump fuel. Also depends what Dyno you are talking about for example Dyno Jet reads higher than every other Dyno

  • @raggaryan44
    @raggaryan44 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This might be a silly question, but with the comparison is the power increase literally just after bolting on the intercooler, or are you mapping it in and then doing a power run?

  • @Bestwick1983
    @Bestwick1983 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Did you see higher boost with the stock cooler as ign timing dipped (compared to the CSF)?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can view the logs here but we saw negligible differences in boost between the two - datazap.me/u/evolveautomotive/stock-vs-csf-n55-intercooler?log=0&data=1

    • @Bestwick1983
      @Bestwick1983 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EvolveAutomotive Thanks for that. Had a quick look over them. I see that that it is indeed negligible, but slightly higher for the stock setup. Is this perhaps due to the load targeting the ECU does, perhaps compensating for less overall ign timing by raising boost? Or is more likely to do with a negligible loss of pressure due to different flow characteristics/volume of the CSF.

    • @Bestwick1983
      @Bestwick1983 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EvolveAutomotive Scratch that, I just aligned the RPM between both runs and it truly is negligible

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Bestwick1983 yes the only difference is due to the RPMs being slightly different.

    • @EvolveAutomotive

  • @miggeer8007
    @miggeer8007 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'M CURIOUS, BECAUSE YOU ALWAYS USE A SINGLE ROLLER OF THE DYNOS WHEN IT IS SUPPOSED TO USE BOTH, WHEN USING ONLY ONE THE HP INCREASES.

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to shout Miguel.
      Okay, two things. Firstly only the front roller is measuring, the second is a free wheel roller purely for the car to rest on. As the car starts to accelerate it ‘climbs’ the front roller that is reading the power. This is because the dyno is controlling rate of acceleration of the vehicle. This will give you more accurate figures as you are removing the drag from the second roller. In the real world the tyre only contacts the road once, so why would it sit on two rollers?
      Secondly, we always strap cars as similarly as humanly possible, to remove variances of strapping method as this can alter the results. This means that we get a reliable delta figure, the difference between the before and after. As always the peak figure is largely meaningless, we are looking at shape of graph and difference before and after.
