Yes and no, a big problem was that it was still "normal" racing teams including a team running 2 or more nations. That's not how nation-based racing should work.
The dudes running the Norwegian alpine skiing national team don't work with the Austrians... or the Swiss.. or just anyone that isn't Norwegian

A short-lived series that immediately comes to mind for me is the "V8 Stars" series from 2001 to 2003 in Germany. It featured silhouette race cars all powered by a 5.7L Ford V8. The only reason it sticks out to me is because one of the car bodies used was the Mk2 Lexus GS400 (albeit without any Lexus badging), making it pretty much the only time I know of when a Lexus GS (-ish) raced in a touring car series.

here in Italy they tried to copy the Supercar V8 with a championship called Superstars V8s in the late 2000s/early 2010s, they were like the V8 supercars but instead of Holden, Ford and the others it had Maserati with the Quattroporte, Chrysler with the 300, Audi with the RS4, Cadillac CTV, Merc c63 AMG and other unique cars. Ooh, I love that series. Somehow it got two official videogames made about it. It also had one of the craziest inter team battles I've ever seen at the 2014 Vallelunga race, where all 3 Audi RS5s from the works team fought each other like crazy during the final 2 laps, with door to door smashing, off track excursions and mad drifts all over the place. Worth looking up!

A1 GP's idea still has some relevance to this day. This "World cup of motorsport" is expanded to something like the olympics in the FIA Motorsport Games wich runs every 2 years. One of the disciplines featured is an open-wheel discipline with some kind of F4 car and was reserved for younger drivers. It also was arguably one of the more popular events of this year's running.
Also, seeing that euro nascar bit brings back a fun reminder of my time at Zolder this year. A friend of mine really likes nascar and always wanted to someday see the real thing in America. When i told him they had a european division that visited Zolder, he was intregued so i invited him to tag along (this was also my first visit to this series). We had a really fun day and highly recommend going if you have one of their races near you! Cheap tickets, good accesibility (including an autograph session, grid walk and chance to run into one of the commentators André Wiegold), good racing and just a fun atmosphere! Now that DTM decided to geoblock the races where i live, a slot on my watchlist has opened up and Euro nascar might take that spot! My friend already is sure to watch the whole season next year!

An extra honorable mention must go to the 1996 Formula Classic series, featuring a 1950s F1/Midget styled car, with Millington rally car running gear and a gear level that was positioned between your legs! The crazy story doesn't end there as the whole thing was the brainchild of Tom Wheatcroft, the man who owned Donington Park, and he had 26 of them made, to the tune of about £1.6 Million pounds! Only 15 entered the first race, which was won by the returning Martin Donnelly after his horrific F1 crash, but the racing wasn't deemed to be much fun, the cars were costly and cars design was baffling, so the series vanished. The cars were stored in the basement of the Donington F1 museum for years after that and gradually sold off, mostly being broken for parts. A sad end to an optimistic dream.

A1GP is possibly my favourite 'dead' series. And looking back at what drivers who competed in it went on to achieve or had achieved at the time, there are some seriously big names among the alumni. I guess the FIA Motorsport Games has kind of brought back the concept of a "World Cup of Motorsport", but I'd love A1GP to be revived.
The Dodge Stratus actually looks pretty good! The Pontiac Sunfire though, I'm not so sure! I feel like one issue with why touring car racing isn't as big in the USA as it is in Europe or Australia is that the niche that it takes up, racing cars based on cars you can buy from a dealership, is basically already taken up by NASCAR. As for the NATCC, the only notable names I can think of who competed in the series are Dominic Dobson, Jeff Andretti, Desiré Wilson and Neil Crompton.
I like the shape of the Solution F cars. Do any series other than the BTCC use NGTC regs or was the STCC the only one that tried?

There are an equally baffling number of championships that never happened that are also very interesting. For example, the UK very nearly had its own V8 Supercars championship in the early 2000's known as the 'SCV8 Supercar Championship', and even had Jaguar, Vauxhall, Peugeot and Honda all signed up for it! The jaguar prototype has recently been rebuilt and looks fantastic. The Caparo T1 (yeah THAT one!) nearly got its own one make series. A very bizarre recent one was the Wildcat Sprint Cars, a sprint car design, without the wing, powered by a 2.0 engine and for UK circuits! Naturally, about 2 were made.

I love the Solution F STCC era - Scott McLaughlin made a cameo when he was a Volvo V8SC driver, and W Series driver Emma Kimilainen was a series regular! If there's a part 2, I'd love to see the Chevrolet Middle East Supercars series mentioned; it was essentially a V8SC spin-off with production-based Holden Commodores.
I'll share an NATCC story that Neil Crompton (the V8SC commentator) told in his book some years ago. He said that "the fields for the 1997 season were small, but the quality at the front end was strong." He'd won both races at the first round at Long Beach despite the car being "borderline undriveable" in pre-season testing at IRP. Pobst said afterwards that "Neil was an unknown quantity [...] I was hoping he'd be a rich-guy Aussie w**ker, but he's not - he's quite a driver."
At the third round in Detroit, Crompton had made two controversial passes on Cunningham and Donohue and was ultimately disqualified from the race - both he and Steve Horne were furious, leading them to withdraw from the following round at Portland in protest. Ironically, then-series organiser Roger Elliot now does a lot of the TV distribution for Australian motorsport series and is in regular contact with Crompton!
Despite winning 7 races that season, Crompton finished third in the standings - their withdrawal from Portland cost them the title, something Crompton claims that Horne still regrets. Crompton also doesn't have any of his trophies from that season; when Horne sold his share in Tasman to Gerry Forsythe, that included all of the teams' trophies (including NATCC ones), and Crompton's requests to get them back have been ignored.

I still remember how big A1GP was to Indonesia. It got front page cover and when it was announced it would be held in Indonesia. It was a big news and the tickets quickly sold out.
There are a lot of drama back then, from postponement due to A1GP founder family death and last minute refurbishment that is still problematic (I remember the tribune leaked and there was a flooding).
For me that proved the concept works, it's just that the original founder Sheikh Maktoum left and so does the financial backing. Coupled with bad management, introduction of Ferrari cars that add more bills and financial crisis, the nail is in the coffin.
That said, now that FIA has Motorsport Games, shouldn't they promote it more? Since the basic idea is like A1GP. I feel it lacks promotions while it has a potential.
The Ferrari A1GP cars had a footnotes too. In mid 2010s they were bought by African based series called AFRIX that plans to run them in 2015/2016. It seems the cars carried curse since the series failed materialized and last time I heard of it is around 2019.

A1 has some interesting Australian links, up until recently Nico Hulkenberg had the lap record at Sydney Motorsport Park in i assume the Lola based A1GP cars. It took a mad 2000 hp time attack weapon to knock the A1GP off the top (and yes i know SMP is slightly shorter now but still).
The series' canclation also lead to the creation of the Gold Coast 600 when the A1GP race didn't materalise with supercars filling it with a pair of 300 km 2 driver races. For the next few years this event then had a standard who's who of international drivers to keep the international feel going. The 2012 start line crash is insane both for the crash itself and the names involved (James Hinchcliff, Ricky Taylor, Vittoni Liuzzi, Simon Pagenaut, Lucas Di Grassi) and had a front row comprised of Seb Bordaix and Mika Salo

This reminds me of a short lived class of domestic motorcycle racing class in Indonesia back in the early to mid 90's. If I remember correctly, it's the 250cc open class. Where bikes like CBR250RR, The brokenly OP NSR250 and others races each other.
The class would last around 3 seasons, with all races won by the NSR250. 60hp with shitty tune on a bike weighing less than 140 kilo (wet) is something else. Especially when you can get through a hairpin without coming out of third gear

There was a " Speedcar series" which was an Asian version of Nascar held at a few circuits around middle east. It was basically like a spec- Nascar where every driver raced the identical cars with same power output. There was also the Intercontinental Rally Challenge or IRC which was a great rally championship with manufacturers teams and it came close to threaten the WRC but it too vanished eventually.

You could have mentioned the Japanese Touring Car Championship which lasted from 1994 to 1998. Originally, its supposed successor would be the SSCC (All-Japan Super Silhouette Car Championship) with the SSCC Chaser as shown, to replace the JTCC after 1998, but that never happened. The Japanese Touring Car Championship even had a cancelled PS1 game based on the 1995, from Bulletproof Software who were the sponsors of the real life 1995 season and also the publishers of not only the game, but also the publishers of Genki's very first Shutokou Battle games and Michael Andretti's Indy Car Challenge. The cancelled PS1 game recycles the engine from Shutokou Battle: Drift King for the PS1, and it's unknown whenever Genki developed the cancelled JTCC game.

A1gp could have huge appeal again if they did it correctly. My ideas: Itd have to be less than or equal to f3. Like f3 but more equal and spec. Limited to drivers that have not progressed to f3 or higher. If a team wants to run a 2nd car, it needs to be for a woman. Teams can use the same driver for 2/3 to 3/4 of the year but must run no less than 3 drivers per car over the season. Id like to see like f3 scholarships for the "winners" but i havent thought that thru or how itd work lol. Maybe have a drivers championship on the side, itd be fine as long as everyone is limited to the same amount of races right? If theres 16 races but noone can race more than 12 something like that

I believe that the WTCC is to begin visiting national touring car races within their season from 2025. In what seems to be the ITCC, but a reverse of that format. WTCC is where you will find the Polestars these days. Same colour, almost as much success. Though they are very Chinese these days. For me, nothing beats the weird and wacky world of the Aussie Racing Car series. Here's a link to a race th-cam.com/video/eK9Yw2dzWJ4/w-d-xo.html Yamaha motorbike engines, with a centrally mounted single seat, and a body dropped on to the identical engine /chassis combo, to make them look like mini Nascars. The format is much cheaper at the entry level, but shamefully, no other county seems to have picked up on the series. The UK has had a Mini Miglia series since 1966, which I suppose mirrors that entry level, but is actually expensive.

I hated the fact I missed so many interesting things around the 2000's, like me never watching or hearing a Lister Storm in real life, and A1GP is definitely one thing I truly missed, because I had nowhere to watch it properly. I was truly invested though, even when Belgium wasn't driving in it. But I do remember the two times they tried to revive it. One as an African championship with the second cars, and same as you mentioned in the video.
Even though I'm a bit disagreeing with most people here about the comparison with the FIA Motorsport Games, which I feel is more like the Olympic Games then what A1GP stood for, we might see something popping up in the future on Asian side. Not with single seaters but Norma prototypes, and from what I read and wrote myself, that has more the feeling of what A1GP was in the past.
But should they revive A1GP and it becomes a championship again, I would try anything to get accredited as a journalist/photographer.
