- Nintendo always says they "strive for inovation" and sometimes will not make a new game because they "do not have new ideas". Yet they had no problem releasing two games so devoid of creativity being New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U. New Super Luigi U was pretty great though. We have not gotten a true 2D Mario game on the Switch, because apparently Toadette is more important than us. The good news is that a group of passionate Mario fans being the Newer Team, created a BRAND NEW Mario adventure called Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii. It has new levels, a new power up, and a lot of creativity. Let's see how it's held up.

It’s because they’re shy.
Without taking anything away from Nintendo's work, it really goes to show how much people love Mario that just about every major release gets at least one substantial hack like this to give fans more to play. And let's be real, that's gonna happen whether Nintendo's effort is 'lazy' or not. Heck, the good games tend to be the ones that get even more hacks!
This game is the reason that I never sold off my homebrew-enabled Wii. I couldn't fathom not playing it again.

8:30 This is something I feel the recent DKC games also do decently well. Instead of 3 hits to defeat a boss, it's only enough to progress it a phase with 9 hits total. It still kind of follows the same formula that novice players will understand while adding more depth to it and allowing for opportunities to challenge the player more, as well as making beating some of the later, harder bosses even more satisfying.
9 total hits with 3 phases is so much better. the bosses don't go down in 10 seconds. plus, the extra phases make for more dynamic boss fights, as they have more varied attack patterns. admittedly, I think some of the bosses in tropical freeze drag on a little too long, but I prefer that over the easily-cheesed koopaling fights.
Finally… it’s here. Can’t wait to see a review of this fantastic hack. I’ve labeled this game my favorite Mario Game, and I think it does an outstanding job at level design.

Something that realized for the Sakura area in New Super Mario is how much more Japanese Buddhist and minor Shinto inspiration the Newer Team put into it.
- The bald Mario statues are a reference to Jizo statues - Jizo (Ksitigarbha) being a bodhisattva relevant in East Asian Forms of Buddhism
- The use of Japanese Cherry Blossoms / Sakura
- The use of Torii (Shinto gates)
- The mountainous location
- The pagodas (Much more found in Japanese Buddhism)
It's so GOOD it's crazy how freaking well-made it is, and I would love if Nintendo put this much care into a new NSMB game

Glad to see this mod finally get more love! NewerSMBW was mind blowing to me and my brothers. Because it took a standand Mario game and added some more flavor to it. The autumn and sakura worlds were so fun. Even with there not being many gameplay changes from the original NSMBW, its still really good. If the NSMB games changed at least this much between games, they wouldn't be as disliked now.
7:00-7:07 It's not luck based, actually. Every Red Toad house cycles between 5-6 patterns, and the patterns cycled through are different for each house, but there are some squares that are always safe. Using this, I guaranteed myself 6 items every time.
My one negative critizism about this fangame is that the Koopalings fights are just the ones where they arn't boosted by Kamek, which makes them boring and easy, I think they should've either made original Koopaling fights, or just have them as the Kamek boosted ones. Besides that, this game is a complete masterpiece.
Some of the fights are honestly worse when compared to the castle fights from the original wii. Really disappointing imo, especially when the topic of “creative boss fights” comes up.
I recommend watching Skawo's developer commentary about the game as he explains why the team was not able to get the castle versions of the koopalings working.

This is my favorite modern 2d mario. It honestly is more different than U was to Wii. I wish it got more recognization. (Also, the newer team is remaking it. Excited for that.)
8:10 the block throwing seems like a homage to Mario Bros 2! It not only has the birdo's you defeat by throwing it's eggs back at him but also actual blocks you can throw at enemy's in later levels. They, and the resulting gameplay look very, very similar here! Nostalgia bones tickled!😁
The NewerTeam is actually working on a "Deluxe"-Version which will improve this gem of a game more graphically.

Can you use a switch pro controller or xbox controller? If so how do you use motion controls?
@@jujuraffe3732you'll need to look up how to use motion controls, since it depends on whether your controller has a gyroscope and accelerometer, (most games just need an accelerometer, but MotionPlus games need a gyroscope) DualShock 4, DualSense, Joycons, and the Switch pro controller all have this, unfortunately, unless you get a 3rd party accessory for your Xbox controller, you won't be able to use it natively for motion controls, but you can map a button to emulate shaking the emulated Wiimote in Dolphin.
Newer SMBW is much better than New SMBW and U. The level design, the names, the worlds & side worlds and the items (including the Hammer). I played in 2014 and wish to play it again
Man every time someone says there 2D Mario people always say "its bland" I am honestly kind of sick and tired of these because I feel like on YT we get far to many negative views on 2D Mario and not enough positive. I feel if people who like 2D Mario and there's a huge positivity than certainly it would outweigh the negative and the people being negative could stop.
I'm very excited since Newer Super Mario Wii holds so much Nostalgia for me

I remember playing this game in the beginning of this year and holy it was amazing! The music is outstanding and the levels have amazing themes and elements! They are making a brand new version for their fifth anniversary called Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii Plus and I am very excited for that 😊
The way their voice goes back and forth between high and low when emphasizing words is so consistent I couldn't pay attention to the video at all
Correction on the music: There's a lot of original compositions, including the boss music you mentioned.
Otherwise, it's great to see a review of one of the best Mario mods and I'd love to see the same for other classic mods like Star Road or CTGP.

I love everything about it. I've completed this game twice, and sometimes I would just spend time doing the levels which act as borders between two different areas, because I've always loved that stuff.
Also, I adore the music. It feels like it constantly varies from level to level.
I'm also glad you didn't spoil every locale this game has to offer.

Pretty odd saying the minimushroom is bad when it actually is really good for newbies, since it makes platforming easier, and makes it easier to avoid stuff. You have much better control than with the propeller hat even.

Every music has a fast remix if you have less than 100 seconds on the timer.
Those are actual remixes, not just sped up versions of the originals, tho they are almost impossible to hear for the most part since almost every level gives you 700 seconds to beat them.
I hope someone eventually makes ambitious mods, to the scale of the Newer games, but for any of the 3D Mario games. Sure, we have custom levels in all of them, and (as far as I know) the only ones to have more than individual custom levels, are 3D World, 64 and Galaxy (3D World and Galaxy only having one or two, maybe three worlds tops), but definitely are not complete games like Newer Wii. Hopefully we get one like that but for Odyssey! 🤞
I got the pleasure of playing this game when I was about 7 yo. I didn't knew it was a fan made and never even thought about that, but it was that great that I remember at least the hammer bro power up until today and you just helped me remember the good days playing with my family this awesome game, thanks man.

In NSMB Wii, none of the toad item houses uses luck. Every house has a specific set of possible item/bowser panels, and all have safe spots that can flipped every time. All you have to do is look for where certain items appear and you can flip the rest accordingly.
Damn, you sold me on this game haha. Definitely going to try it after I run out of new Mario games to play. It looks amazing for a mod. Gotta appreciate all that work!

I just download this game in 2023 and I managed to clear the whole game 100% finding all secret exits and levels, this game requires me to buy a Wii U to play it but not much people sell Wii’s in my city and the one I bought was a second handed Wii. Since it was played before some buttons don’t reacts when I press them making the control much harder,
I have to tell you that my favourite game is this one because it contains much more than the original one and the musics in the game sounds so good, the worlds like Freeze flame glacier is my favourite world and the reason is already explained in the video.
Plus the developers really put their heart in it I’m surprised to see an amazing Mario game because I tried to make one myself and it looked nothing like this😅
Some levels are crashed in my game like the one levels in 3-6 (BUBBLE BASIN) is unplayable and the levels is now doubled in 3-7 (SLANTY SHROOM ROAD ) but I really enjoyed playing thisbgame
Newer is quite a fun game, but one criticism that wasn't mentioned in the video is how the Star Coins were handled. The shop is quite cool conceptually, but keep in mind that Star Coins aren't replenishable. Once you collect them all, there's no more you can get unlike regular coins. So the shop is basically unusable for those who want to keep their Star Coin tallies. The gates in New Super Mario Bros DS handled the concept much better as there's only a set amount of them, making it feel like unlocking them is part of the completion process.
Otherwise my thoughts are with Demeech here. Great hack overall!
You can still see your star coins in the star coins menu even if you have spent them
I've recently been playing Newer Wii after it came up in a casual conversation, and I'm even more excited to finish it after this video. P.S. The way to pick stuff up with the Classic controller is actually pressing X instead of the shoulder buttons, as it also functions as a spin jump button (like Super Mario World did. Nice attention to detail in my opinion)
Has been a while since I played this, I should replay it some time soon. I dont remember why, cause it was a long time ago, but I remember I liked Newer SMB DS more than the Wii version, the map world and some of the enemies and graphics in the Wii version simply felt odd and out of place IMO.
Dude! I love your retrospectives on Mario games! They're so much fun. You should check on Super Mario 64 DS someday and compare it to its original N64 counterpart, I've been playing the DS version a lot recently and it's not as good as I remember.
I can confirm. This game is pretty cool, and fun to play. I love the small worlds with 4 or so levels, it makes the game a whole lot more fun.
I remember seeing this mod, and my dad and I homebrewing our Wii to play this mod co-op. We never finished it (we only got to World 4 or 5, I believe) but it's a pleasant memory none the less.
Honestly for someone who wants to play the game and I have the Wii version I'm happy with the Wii version except for the fact that it does not have any real controller support. As someone who Love's older style games and retro games but hates the d-pad on most controllers, the Super Mario Brothers Wii U Deluxe on switch might just be the best way to play this. But adding controller support with all that I think this game really needed

personally i don't mind the 3 hit system for bosses
it makes sure that bosses aren't too long but not too short either
and it allows for clear fasing
I think what worked about Donkey Kong Country Returns is that the worlds felt ALIVE. The levels felt like they were part of the environment although I can't help but love NSMBW and NSMBU

Note: Newer also works with USB Loaders (ex: USBLoaderGX, WiiFlow, etc). Now, you will need a rom of the game, and it is on the internet, but I won’t tell you where to find it. Remember: it’s your choice on how you get your roms (I modified my nsmbwii rom myself).

Although I’ve never played it, I’ve seen a full walkthrough. It’s looks like a lot of fun and I really love the creativity in the game. Even the basic desert, beach, and forest themes were more interesting than the originals.

I fully agree witb the statement that Newer Wii (and Newer DS, which you should totally check out btw) lived up to the potential that the NSMB series failed to live up to after NSMB Wii. I would also like to see a Demeech's Fury video on Yoshi's New Island, given how you once mentioned it as an absolute embarrassment to the Yoshi series.
The Toad houses are not technically random though, they have patterns you can recreate in order to always get all bonuses

The Ninja Shy Guy, World 8 (Koopa Core)’s soundtrack, me literally going apeshit over Ninja Shy Guy literally One-shotting Kamek, and feeling bad for Ninja Shy Guy when he gets beaten down, and the Hammer Suit being in there.
(And what if Wario was a boss, or additional playable character?)
While not thematically all unique or sometimes just slightly different takes on existing mario themes for most levels super mario powerstar frenzy(a canceled fangame) is quite good and is a different take on a 2d mario game.
It has elements of all the 2d games(including 2 usa and the original yoshis island) as well as the 3d games and some spinoffs all into one game, it is mission based as well like the 3d games instead of like a typical 2d ones and has more open and bigger levels alot of the time.
If you are interested there are 2 main versions of the game those being the 2017(more levels and content but older versions of some and different physics and may not run right on some newer computers) as well as the 2019 demo that has updated versions of returning levels but less of them and a different overworld map but also has a few new ones not in the older version of the game.
Both of these are worth checking out to be honest and if you do enjoy whats here to offer the dev is making a game thats similar to these fangames now called Aurascope but without the mario powerups, enemies,pipes and question blocks but also has quite a few new things and mechanics instead.

1 player or 2 player is the ideal way to play imo, but 4 player is the most fun if everybody knows how to play the game
This game is absolutely phenomenal for the most part, but I do have a few issues with it.
(1) All the bosses, while creative and cool, are way too easy.
(2) I don't understand why each Koopaling fight is each boss' tower form. Those all suck compared to their respective castles.
(3) Some of the Star Coins are AWFUL. (World 8-4 SC1, 8-A SC3)
(4) Why are there only 3 levels with space gravity in the SPACE WORLD?
(5) Out of the 14 levels in World 8, every single one except 8-3, 8-Castle 1, and 8-7 straight-up suck to play.
(6) Why isn't Bowser Jr. used as the boss in the towers/castles that don't have a boss?
(7) After all these years, P1 STILL cannot choose their character. I WANT LUIGI!!!!!!
(8) While most of the music is beyond phenomenal (the castle theme is the best Mario song since In the Final), what is the Factory theme? Like, seriously. Look up the Factory theme (specifically Fast Factory) and tell me you would want to play any level with this music.

I had missed out on newsup in its time, and later wanted to play it via less than legitimate methods...
I assumed newer was just an updated version, maybe more levels, but not until I was very deep into the game, and looked something up online about the game, that I realized it was a romhack... It's so good though, and thoroughly speaks Nintendo design language.. still haven't went back to play NSMB haha

I have been itching for a new 2D Mario since Super Mario Maker 2 (Story Mode is fine, but I don't think it makes up for not having a game with original mechanics). I'll have to give this a shot.
Honestly I feel like the best thing 2d Mario games like U needed to combat its blandness is a ranking system like how a lot of Sonic games have them. 3d World could also work well with one as well do to the way its designed.
And not the shitty Sonic Generations or Forces ranking system either. I mean the Colors or Sonic Adventure 2 ranking system on how to complete them.

I do feel like it should be hard to get a S rank however.
As long as you beat the stage in time and have a high enough score, you get the S rank.
It gives the score way more importance then just lives. And it honestly would be a good shake up for 2d Mario games

@@papersonic9941 I actually agree with the sa2 ranking system, you shouldn’t be able to run past everything in a level and still get an A rank that’s too boring and honestly your reward for speed running a level is the time you get not the rank. It’s fun to try to optimize the levels to get the most score points possible and provides incentive to play levels in multiple different ways either for trying to get the best time or the highest score/rank. Getting the best rank while skipping most things in a level makes the things within a level kinda pointless so it’s nice that the ranking system gives incentive for interacting with things within the level.

Nintendo is a great company. But I think they are the main culprit on the lackluster creativity displayed on these games. I bet they have a list of stupid rules that have to be followed to maintain consistency (thus truly killing innovation). Like, all toads in paper Mario game have to be basic
