How New Super Luigi U Turned THE WORST Mario Game Into One Of The BEST- Better Than Mario U?

- Revisiting New Super Mario Bros. U left me feeling quite surprised, mostly not in a good way. Even though I wanted a Wii U to play Mario U, New Super Luigi U had me much more intrigued. Luigi has always been one of my favorite Mario characters and I LOVED the idea of a Luigi focused platformer. Even though the game is technically an expansion of New Super Luigi U, most consider it it's own game. Similar to how most would not see Wario Land and Yoshi's Island as "Super Mario Land 3" and "Super Mario World 2". The question is, is Luigi U as amazing as I thought it would be?

I remember using the Mini Mushroom in NSLU to fly over levels with the fun & floaty physics, it was hilarious. Like being a tiny green fly that still died in one hit, just soaring over everything.

The Switch version does have another disadvantage- Nabbit and Toadette also add 100 seconds to the timer- so it defeats the purpose of Luigi U when you use them

But you can still pretend it is 100 seconds, just fall into the void when you are playing as Toadette/Nabbit when timer hits 100

Luigi U is a perfect example of how important level design is to a game. At a glance New Super Luigi Bros U is a bad game, but then you see the same mechanics, enemies, level themes and power ups used in level design that's actually inspired. Suddenly you realize that all NSMBU needed to be amazing was level design that didn't bore you to tears

Nabbit clearly is added because everyone knows how not fun multiplayer is sometimes because of how hectic it is. If you were to speedrun with multiple players at once, it is way too hard! Nabbit makes it playable and much more fun. (I speak from own experience)
Then they should get good at the game. In all seriousness, I'm fine with his inclusion, but I would've like a standard character as well.
When I play with my daughter she uses Nabby or Peachette, I think they're perfect for younger audience
@@Demeech It is bot a case of getting good. The game is still fairly playable, it is just way less fun.

something i dont see many people mention when they talk about this game is that nabbit actually makes multiplayer different and more fun, as long as you're only playing with 2 players. the reason is because nabbit's interactions with players are far different than how blue and yellow toad work. nabbit can completely pass through other players, he can't be picked up and because of his invincibility, nabbit is encouraged to take different paths through the level. because of this you wont be bumping into each other as much. nabbit being "easy mode" is only really if you choose to play as him in single player, if you're playing multiplayer with one other person though, its a blast
just don't do it on the switch port, they made it so you can interact with nabbit like a normal character (picking up, not passing through players, etc.) yet another reason as to why the switch port is actively worse than the originals

I bought the Deluxe version not knowing how much worse it is (on sale though). It NEVER fails to anger me how stupid it is that yellow and blue toad aren't separate characters that can be played at the same time. I wouldn't mind the assymetrical multiplayer the original had being gone if I could just play the game for real with my brothers!!!
In which other ways is the Deluxe version worse than the originals?
I gotta say, usually these kinds of real life skits make me cringe, but yours was simple and quick, and it felt appropriate for the context, so I actually enjoyed it, nicely done!
I rarely do them, but for this video it was worth it.
I personally can't stand cutaways and this video was no different.
Mario & Luigi Dream Team was also an important part of the year of Luigi as well
New Super Luigi U was a rather nice surprise from The Year Of Luigi for sure. Another thing that could have made it better tho is if Daisy was player 4 instead of Nabbit. That'd be awesome!
Or Luigi recued her in Sarasaland, it would be really cute and unique, not just a clone of NSMBU .

I absolutely fell in love with Luigi U when I first played it. I didn't think it was going to be any different but I played the first stage, heard the timer go off, saw the design of the first stage was different and that was it - I was hooked. Definitely a great way to shake up the "New" format.

Agreed. As cheap as NSLU is for recycling like 90% of the original game, it's fresh idea of spicing up level play makes it a bit better than NSMBU, if you ask me. Despite the fact you can call it a ROM hack and wouldn't be too far off the margin, I relish in the fact that it is much more difficult. I'd say NSLU contends with the likes of NSMBWii, and was overall a great time. It could've been much better as a standalone title for the year of Luigi, of course, but I'll take what I can get. Hmm, 9/10.
Have not had the pleasure to actually play through this game, except for a couple levels at GameStop. As a Luigi fan, I would want this regardless and agree it is a treasure.
5:30 Actually they considered extra Boost Rush packs for release as DLC, but they ultimately decided on New Super Luigi U due to the Year of Luigi going on at the time.
A game fully focused on Luigi is always gonna be treasure imo
I disagree that Nabbit being added as an easy mode is a bad thing. Just because the game is easy for you, doesn't mean it's easy for everyone, and gaming should be enjoyable to everyone, not frustrating. By adding an easy mode, the game becomes more accessible, and there's nothing wrong with that. Though I will agree it is a bit annoying that the 4th player always needs to be playing an easy mode, that feels like a total oversight.
I really enjoy this game though, this is one of the best 2D Mario games, the level design is amazing and it was really creative for a NSMB game.

toadette is classified as easy mode but she really doesn't make the game that much easier if we're talking about multiplayer

Easy mode is not "accessible". All games are accessible and your frustration is not the fault of the developers in every case (particularly in the case of platformers which are well-made).

2d sonic games still have a timer but it only counts the time you spend in a level similar to mario 64
but unlike mario 64 that timer actually matters because getting an S rank depends mostly on how quick you complete a level unlike mario 64 where I forget that a timer even exists

That was the goal!
This was one of the only games I had growing up and i hugely preferred Luigi U over Mario U. I still don't know why, but I have over 200 hours on Luigi U because I practically 100%ed it everyday until I got 3D World and Galaxy 1 and 2. The physics are really fun and it has so much replay value from the shorter levels.
It is also more fun to speedrun. Some stages in New Super Mario Bros U take a long time to beat. Every level in NSLU can be beaten in about a minute excluding boss fights.
@@thesupervideogamenerdmore3171 it is pretty fun to speedrun. I've speedrunned a few levels and it's really fun because of Luigi's higher jump and the levels being around 15-30 seconds to beat.
Nabbit is if giving your baby cousin an unplugged controller was a character.

Personally I really like both New Soup U games, I feel like U fixed the problems of Wii, and Luigi U provides a fresh and creative spin on the original. Awesome video dude, we can tell you've worked hard on it.

The main point as to why I covered the history of Luigi was to showcase how bad Mario Is Missing was and why it failed. Because Luigi U is that game done right. But I appreciate it!
I just love your videos so much, it can really be seen how much effort you put into them and all the research you do for them, they're so enjoyable I have watched them multiple times but still enjoy them so much when I want to take my mind off things and relax🥰

For me, I actually first discovered Luigi in Super Mario Bros. DX, by pressing select on the map, you can play as him. Lost Level physics and all. I know, I'm old haha.
Irrelevant comment aside, I've seen both of your NSMBU videos, and I gotta say. I agree. NSLU is the better of the two. I remember I got NSMBU for free when I got MK8 and I never got around to beating it. NSLU on the other hand, I beat the game using the Mini Mushroom in the last Bowser fight. It was a true David and Goliath moment. lol
Wish I still had my physical copy though, they're way past the $30 price tag nowadays.
Luigi U is uust a nice break from the standard Mario 2D formula. The timer never felt unfair, as the levels were perfectly designed with it in mind, making it a fun fast paced experience. The difficulty was just right too, not terribly difficult but not a walk in the park eithrr (aside from some of the endgame levels which were damn hard).
I just got this game for the Wii U, and I must say, it's very good! It turns a slow paced game into a speedruner's dream.

Why not saving her in Saraland, c'mon even a brave guy as Mario was kidnaped by King Boo or a big powerful guy as DK by King K.Rool, Daisy is not a saiyan or something, remember that Tatanga takes control of Sarasaland once, he is as stronger as Bowser or more because he can kidnap a strong princess as Daisy, it would be really romantic that Luigi face his fears for save Daisy, a cute proof of love just like Mario and Peach does, why Peach need to be saved everytime?? .

I could only play the lost levels as Luigi, I beat the whole game as him including the alphabet levels. I was a teenager then and it wasn’t easy. I may venture back to that game for another go
I think it would've been funny if bowser captured mario instead of peach in this game and Luigi had to rescue him
6:59 Oh, not just Daisy. I once said/suggested that Waluigi should have been in NSLU as the final boss battle instead of Bowser.
Or Tatanga, Waluigi is not evil enough, he can join the rescue like Wario does in SM64 Ds, Daisy is the princess that need to be rescued from Tatanga in a mision to save in Sarasaland again, Tatanga deserves a comeback .

it was actually very original to tie Mario's absence in this game to Mario Land 2, not only does it makes sense, but its way more creative than anything Nintendo has tried to do with 2D Mario
Honestly? They should have replaced Nabbit with Daisy as the fourth person. Yes, new asset, but still would have been amusing to see Daisy platforming with Luigi to save Peach.

NSMBU is objectively the best 2D Mario game, and one of the best 2D platformes in general. The formula may be tired at this point, and it shouldn't have launched at the same time as 2, but it's the opposite of trash. The level design is inarguably top tier in both Mario U and Luigi U.
New Super Mario Bros. U was already great, and New Super Luigi U takes it to another level.
The skit at the beginning was great. NSLU is really close to becoming my favorite NSMB game.

As a Luigi and Metroidvania fan, I think a challenging Metroidvania staring Luigi would be a great game for the guy. Tough bosses and platformering, Luigi physics combined with E.Gadd's gadets, and a unique story would be an excellent game and a nice change of pace from typical 2D mario.
As someone who doesn't care about nintendo or their games your channel is a lot of fun to watch

Yea, I agree that playing as Nabbit feels like cheating. But it's not even a fun easy mode. You're barely playing the game if you can't get hit by enemies. At least the White Tanooki Suit only gets available after dieing a lot of times in the same level. But the Funky Kong Mode from Tropical Freeze is one of the best easy modes I've seen so far: Extra health and a double jump.

I absolutely love NSLU. It is the best "hidden treasure" of the Mario series. Enjoy the NEWER games. Newer Super Mario Bros Wii was one of my favorite mods of all time. The DS game had some wild difficulty swings worse than Mario 3.
I like the idea that all of the Super Mario escapades all take place in 1983.
Kinda unrelated but I love Real world locations in videos games also and Mario Kart tour got to be the best example of this with each city course they made is really good and looks amazing Los Angels Laps is my new all time favorite Mario kart course.
It could be interesting to see a sort of Kaizo/Dark Souls Luigi platforming game, with a baby/casual mode for the layman.

They are really lazy, Luigi deserves better for his year .
Well in the part of nabit is cool that the option was there cuz even if i wouldn't use it there's people that enjoy games even if they made it without challenges and it's good to let people enjoy a game like they want but like that, an option that when you are playing with 4 players you can choose if one uses nabit or a 3 toad

I feel invisability should be a reward for skilled players instead of being a reward for bad players. Sonic games did it well with Super Sonic in Sonic 2 and 3
I've had NSMB on the DS for years and never knew about the L and R trick. Wish I did too since I love Luigi.
