When to Set the Hook? Non Stop Tautog (Blackfish) Jig Bite

  • This tautog/blackfish trip chronicles a November 9, 2019 1/2 day trip with John Skinner (we literally fished from 7:30 to 11:15). Right before this, I had 6 straight blackfish "jig" Charters where a lot of my customers were first time jiggers.
    I spent a lot of the time coaching these customers, explaining when to set the hook (basically, avoid all the "taps" and wait for the hard thump or the running/swimming away of the jig.
    This video chronicles some of that and hopefully my rod tip shows up clearly enough for all to understand.
    For those experienced tog jiggers, would love to get your thoughts on when you set the hook.

      JAYFISH718 hey Jay - half day trip is 600 and full day is 850. I don’t really do open boat trips. She’s getting pulled on 11/24 after my last charter that day. Next bookings I’m taking are for Spring fluke :)

    Nice job Halk!! I haven't fished for tog from a boat in a few years. Just hitting the inlet jetty in Avalon, but your technique of when to set the hook still rings true! Thanks for the continued advise! Way to let that big fish go back to make more fish babies!!

    I so glad I’ve found your channel. I’m trying to soak up all the knowledge I can so next year I’ll be a new boat owner first time and I really wanna know how to fish for all different kinds of fish.

    Great vid! I love the penn battle reels. Can’t beat them for the price... question for you: I’ve been losing a lot of jigs around Jetty’s where I know there are blackfish. I know it’s a part of the game, but would you suggest putting the jig a little farther away from the jetty, but risk catching less fish? Or keep it close and just buy a shit ton or rigs/jigs and suck it up? I’ve been predominantly using bottom sweeper jigs (same as skinners tog jigs).

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tim - dame here on the jigs. I have been casting with a few feet of the jetty - close enough but not to close. I also now realize for jetty fishing it’s probably best to step up the line size since you’re much more susceptible to line breaking.
      So my personal Battle II is 5 years old with no issues but I brand new one that a customer was using broke (gear teeth sheered) and I think I know why. Too convoluted to explain here but will try and do so in a future video

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Anthony - not sure how much it helps but it does make it easy to move up or down in jig size without re-tying

    Hey guys. Great vid. Quick question. Can I translate this jigging technique to party boat fishing? If so, how? Head boats require heavier weight for straight vertical fishing, but 8oz sinkers (are there 8oz porgy jigs?), kill the feel for the angler and the fish, right? Could you do a video where you use head boat techniques to demonstrate successful Tog fishing? Thx u

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ST Richards really tough to replicate this on a head boat. I may be fishing one in NJ in December and I do, I will definitely compare styles.

    Hey guys. Love the channel. Question/comment for you... had a charter captain “scold” me one time “pumping” my rod to reel in a good size black fish. Looks like you do at least a little. What are your thoughts about cheating to get more power vs leaving the rod tip up

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jig4Striper Everyone has different styles and I don’t want to sound like a pompous jerk questioning why the other guy told you that but you can absolutely pump them. Look at the first fish caught by Skinner. He pumps it the whole way up. Even though these rods are light, they have the back bone to handle the weight and you really take a lot of the pressure off your reel by doing it this way. My two cents anyway :-)

    what rod and reel are best for blackfish?

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends what kind of blackfishing

  • @craig1lengyel
    @craig1lengyel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    10 pound test! How much thinner can it be from 15 pound test line? I would have a tough time blackfishing with that light of line.

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Skinner was using 15 - I did feel I could hold better with a 3/4 ounce jig. He bumped his up a bit as current picked up. I was able to keep using the 3/4

    • @craig1lengyel
      @craig1lengyel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand why you do it, but I have not gone that light and 99 % of people watching have not either. We need to be taught in person or on these videos. I have a reel set up with 12 pound test for catching Walleye's in Connecticut.

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Craig from CT I’ll put it this way, I’ve had my bucktail with ten pound braid snag the bottom in Montauk whole drifting for fluke and I’d say half the time the 30 pounder leader breaks but not the braid. Today’s modern lines are strong. When I fished the Miss Montauk in 2018 I was able to hold with 3 ounces with no scope and the guys next to me using 30 pound braid with 8 ounce weights on chicken rigs were sailing. Try it once. You will be a converter too. Heck, Sweeney uses 8 pound test in Montauk!

    Why do you use spinning gear jigging for blackfish and conventional gear jigging for fluke?

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jesse Gordon great question. The jigs we use for tog are often 1/2, 5/8 or 3/4 ounces. They get to the bottom a LOT faster with the spinner. Lightest I go on ocean fluke is 2 ounces and a bait caster/conventional set up is just fine for that.
