Blackfish (Tautog) Jigging with 2 Beginners - Unexpected Results

- Happy New Year all! This November 2, 2019 blackfish/tautog trip with brothers Carl and Don was a great example of exposing two tog jigging newbies to the game. Neither Carl or Don had EVER jigged for tog before (jig of choice was a 3/4 ounce John Skinner blackfish jig) and they were both quick studies.
Part of this video discusses a hard hook set vs. "lifting your rod." How do you do it? The other part reinforces the boat technique of "building a bite" and not anchoring next to a boat that has already built a bite since that boat will already have attracted most of the blackfish in the general area.

Totally agree with the hard swing hookset, its an indication of having the confidence and feel of knowing the fish has the jig in its mouth. Slow lift is just guessing.
Yes I agree that quick hard set is the way to go, great video.
As much as I like center consoles, they are cold as hell when that cold weather sets in.
Tog are very territorial, as proof of fishing an 85 foot PB, My son and I fished the 7b's out of R.I. a week before thanksgiving, the boat had 68 people on board, my son was hot during the first half of the trip, I caught up the second half catching the biggest fish just over 6 lbs. We were high hook with 4 keepers ea. there were only 25 keepers caught and yes it was cold in the morning, 17 degrees.
A lot of shorts were caught, also we kept getting mugged by people who weren't catching anything mid ship, 13 anglers across the back of the boat elbow to elbow and we managed to out fish all the
muggers. 😂😂

There's nothing like blackfishing. I'm an absolute maniac.
An anonymous maniac lol. I’ll be very honest, it was always number two after fluke for me just because of the anchoring elements which is kind of a pain. Since I got the trolling motor, I think it may have surpassed fluke since it’s so easy to get on the spot now. It’s an absolute blast like you said!
I want to see you guys fight a 14 pounder on that set up.

In all seriousness Craig, are fishing a reef that is very forgiving. It’s not a wreck. It may take a while, but I’m confident we’d get the fish in the boat!
