Recently moved to ENC and have just got into fishing. I can honestly thank my two boys for that (7 & 4 years old). Anywho, your videos have been a HUGE help! I cannot thank you enough for the knowledge and wisdom you choose to share with your audience. This rig works great! thanks again.

I call it "impromptu improvisation" so as not to lose my patience and passion. Thank you for being basic and yet practical! Happy fishing, sir!
I’ve watched 10+ videos of tying surf fishing leaders trying to find a video where I can ACTUALLY SEE THEM ZOOMING IN ON THE KNOT TYING. 99% of the videos I’ve seen are absolutely worthless and I’m just getting information for the ears. This was FLAWLESS. I just pre built 10-15 leaders in under 30 minutes n all ready to go in the surf tackle box cause I can actually see what’s going on in this video!!! THANK YOU!!! BRAVO!!! Idk why that was so hard for others to ZOOM IN TO THE KNOT TYING N SLOW DOWN. Lolol. Thank you soooo much bro!
I used this set up growing up. Now I’m getting back into fishing but couldn’t remember the set up. Found your video, made the set up, went fishing caught 2 fish. Mind you, this is after going fishing 5 times in the last month with out a catch. Thanks!
Love this rig! I've been tying it like crazy and keep sets of 7-8 in my bag in 20#, 40# and 50# for Cape Cod stripers. I love the bead add too and have made a tiny edit on the heavier rigs by making a t-knot so it stands out better and I get less snags. Great channel man, you guys are awesome!
You can also by those smaller Styrofoam bobbers and thread it onto the hook line to keep the top hook floating off the bottom. You generally use a smaller bait on it. It's great if crabs are stealing your bait or there is vegetation on the bottom and you want your bait to have more visibility by having it floating a feet or 2 off the bottom. You can also use a wine cork for more natural look, sometimes bright colors make the fish more cautious, and the cork is natural wood color.
I like to both lure and bottom fish. And I use the same setup as you just showed, but there is an easier, faster way. Bonus: You only have to tie ONE knot. First I tie a snap swivel to the end of my line. (Thats your one knot) That's how I attach my sinkers. Then I take my Bear Paw Line-Leader connectors and put on my hook (the pre-made kind like you showed. That's it. We're done, just bait up and cast. For those that don't know, The connectors are made of a small cone tube, and a "peg" shaped kinda like a fish. with a slit to attach to your line and hook. Take your line, make a small loop and push it threw the small end of the cone tube and take the peg aim the skinney at the tube and put the loop from your line into the slit. Snug up your line so the line don't come off the peg, but don't cover the slit. Take the loop on the line on your hook and put it in the slit pulling it to the fatter end of the peg. Now push the peg till it's tight in the tube. It's pointy and kind hurts my fingers so I usually use my teeth or a pair of pliers. And your set to fish. An added bonus is, the connectors hold the hook out from your line so there's less chance of tangling the hook on the line. It took a lot of words to explain how to use them, but in reality you can put your hook on in under ten second, and take them off even quicker. Amazon link. a.co/d/0cdOXMjC You can probably pick them up at any baitshop or even Walmart cheaper. Now, I mentioned that I like to lure fish too. If I get bored of bottom fishing, I take off the bear paws, take the sinkers off too, and put a lure on the snap swivel and in under a minute, I'm lure fishing.
I have been doing this for years...thanks for giving away my secrets, lol. Actually I work in a tackle shop. I will be sharing this with my customers. It will save me lots of time.
Always wet your knots before tightening them down. Also if you add a locking swivel at the bottom you can remove you weight and clip it to the guide on the rod during transport. Space your hooks at the proper distance apart so they can be hooked to each other during transport for less mess. If you cut your drop loop down to 1 line instead of it being doubled over. There is less line for the fish to see. Just leave about 1/4-1/2" tag line.
We used to use the surgeon's knots up the rig to put the hooks on. Just a simple over under and through then pull. I can see the dropper loop sticks out at more of a right angle, but when you're on a rocking boat in the middle of the night and your hands are covered in stinking bait you don't want to be putting them or any tackle near your mouth - simpler just to tie a single knot per loop.
Good video. That's the only rig I use. Great rig for all bottom fish, especially sheepshead and Tog. 1 thing i would add although obvious is always wet your line when pulling knots tight.
I've never had a problem catching fish on the premade rigs. However I tend to use the premade rigs for smaller fish (e.g spot, croaker, white perch, etc.). When going for bigger fish I usually use a Carolina rig.
spent the day fishing the surf on bonita beach yesterday and normally i just flat fish with a lure but I saw a few people using sand fleas so i decided to take a chance. after watching this video im excited to see if i can get better results! thank you
Great rig. I use a snapping swivel to attach the weight seems to help keep the line from getting twisted when hardheads and whiting are stealing your bait and your retrieving your line over and over. Great video. Tight Lines
I like to have a few pre made rigs if it is windy out... For some reason I suck at tying in the wind, so I make some rigs at home and then when I get out to the spot I can just clip them to a small snap swivel.
Have the same problem in the wind. We use 20-30 lb mono for leader (for toothy critters and oyster shells). I make some up at the house with the hooks and we use pool noodles on the yak or beach cart to keep them organized. My wife prefers Carolina rigs, which are great for feeling the bite, but the sinkers do destroy the line after a while.
Yep, get a length of mono, and tie 4 Surgeon’s Loops spaced out. The last top loop is used to clip onto your snap swivel, so you can make up a bunch of double dropper leaders ahead of time.
I’ve been using this rig for years. It works very well when fishing with bait for damn near everything. I make my drop loops a bit smaller though, maybe 1 1/2” - 2” depending on the hooks I’m using. Put some circle / octopus hooks on and you’ll get a perfect hook set every time. If you’re fishing for flounder, I’d make the drop loops about 4-5” and thread on a spinner between a couple beads above the skirt & hook, and instead of using a weight at the bottom when drifting, use a jig or buck tail. (I’ve seen videos of flounder biting at the lead weight.) It works..🍻
This video actually taught me a lot, thanks i just feel bad about fishing because, man poor fish. But im planning on getting my fishing license, and this video got me pretty ready, now i just to learn how to throw the lure in, Thanks!
I really like your simplistic Rigs. My only concern is that on every knot you tie you fail to moisten the line with saliva or water to lubricate the line as you tighten the knots up. The amount of heat generated as you tighten down will cause unseen damage to the mono. This can lower the breaking strain by as much as 60%. Or put it another way, your 20lb mono will actually be only 12lbs breaking strain. Remember to do this simple thing and lubricate your mono, this could stop the chance of loosing a Trophy Fish. We all know how that feels. Being an ex Fishing boat Charter Captain here in the UK I used to drum it into my paying charter guests to do this every time they went Fishing. I have seen many Trophy Fish lost because of monofilament damage.. Tight Lines Buddy !!!

True. I've used those cheap Eagle Claw ones and never had a problem. Used the for perch, crappie and I'm on the west coast now and use them for surf perch and flounder. Never had a problem ever and they are cheap. 1.99 where I am. They also sell pre tied dropper rigs on a spool from 10lb to a 100lb so you don't have to mess around doing this crap. Doing it this way is great to know maybe in case you need to tie one spur of the moment.
Great vid! Lots of spanish mackerel schooling on bait at Gloucester Point today if you're looking for something to do tomorrow. Not sure if they'll be there or not but it was pretty cool watching them ball the bait up and hit them from the bottom and the birds crashing the ball from the air, all 5 feet from the pier. Folks were grabbing bait off the top with dip nets.

I also like a bead ahead of each hook but this is personal preference. Your comment on hook size is spot on. Same exact rig we tie for offshore fishing. We call it the chicken rig. We add a swivel to the top and then attach to the main line. And use bigger gear of course. Usually 60lb mono and size 4/0-6/0 hooks. Great for snapper, porgy’s, trigger, and for catching larger baits like grunts.
